Let Y be a non-singular projective manifold with an ample canonical sheaf, and let V be a rational variation of Hodge structures of weight one on Y with Higgs bundle E(1,0) + E(0,1), coming from a family of Abelian varieties. If Y is a curve the Arakelov inequality says that the difference of the slope of E(1,0) and the one of E(0,1) is is smaller than or equal to the degree of the canonical sheaf. We prove a similar inequality in the higher dimensional case. If the latter is an equality, as well as the Bogomolov inequality for E(1,0) or for E(0,1), one hopes that Y is a Shimura variety, and V a uniformizing variation of Hodge structures. This is verified, in case the universal covering of Y does not contain factors of rank >1. Part of the results extend to variations of Hodge structures over quasi-projective manifolds.
The revised version corrects several mistakes and ambiguities, pointed out by the referee. Following suggestions of the referee the presentation of the results was improved.
We establish a relation between intersection numbers of special cycles on a Shimura curve and special values of derivatives of metaplectic Eisenstein series at a place of bad reduction where p-adic uniformization in the sense of Cherednik and Drinfeld holds. The result extends the one established by one of us (S. Kudla: Ann. of Math. 146 (1997)) for the archimedean place and for the non-archimedean places of good reduction. The bulk of the paper is concerned with the corresponding problem on the Drinfeld upper half plane (the formal scheme version).
Projective structures on compact real manifolds are classical objects in real differential geometry. Complex manifolds with a holomorphic projective structure on the other hand form a special class as soon as the dimension is greater than one. In the Kähler Einstein case, projective space, tori and ball quotients are essentially the only examples. They can be described purely in terms of Chern class conditions. We give a complete classification of all projective manifolds carrying a projective structure. The only additional examples are modular abelian families over quaternionic Shimura curves…
In this paper we generalize Cherednik's method and prove that certain Shimura varieties corresponding to groups of unitary similitudes and automorphic vector bundles over them have p-adic uniformization. This is proved for Shimura varieties, uniformized by the complex unit ball, when the central simple algebra over a CM-field defining the group of unitary similitudes has Brauer invariant 1/d at p. In this case, Shimura varieties can be uniformized by Drinfeld's covers of p-adic upper half-spaces.
Let D be a quaternion division algebra over a totally real number field F which splits exactly at one infinite place. We assume that there is a p-adic place where D doesn't split. Then the associated Shimura curve has a Cherednik unifomization by the p-adic upper half plane. We define an integral model of the Shimura curve an over the integers O of this p-adic place. We prove an uniformization theorem for the completion of the model over the formal spectrum Spf O.
The main goal of this article is to give an explicit rigid analytic uniformization of the maximal toric quotient of the Jacobian of a Shimura curve over the field of rational numbers at a prime dividing exactly the level. This result can be viewed as complementary to the classical theorem of Cerednik and Drinfeld which provides rigid analytic uniformizations at primes dividing the discriminant. As a corollary, we offer a proof of a conjecture formulated by M. Greenberg in his paper on Stark-Heegner points and quaternionic Shimura curves, thus making Greenberg's construction of local points on …
In this paper we show that certain Shimura varieties, uniformized by the product of complex unit balls, can be p-adically uniformized by the product (of equivariant coverings) of Drinfeld upper half-spaces. We also extend a p-adic uniformization to automorphic vector bundles. It is a continuation of our previous work [V], and contains all cases (up to a central modification) of a uniformization by known p-adic symmetric spaces. The idea of the proof is to show that an arithmetic quotient of the product of Drinfeld upper half-spaces cannot be anything else than a certain unitary Shimura variety…
We prove a Cherednik style $p$-adic uniformization theorem for Shimura varieties associated to certain groups of unitary similitudes of size two over totally real fields. Our basic tool is the alternative modular interpretation of the Drinfeld $p$-adic halfplane of our earlier paper (arXiv 1108.5713)
This survey article discusses some results on the structure of families f:V-->U of n-dimensional manifolds over quasi-projective curves U, with semistable reduction over a compactification Y of U. We improve the Arakelov inequality for the direct images of powers of the dualizing sheaf. For families of Abelian varieties we recall the characterization of Shimura curves by Arakelov equalities. For families of curves we recall the characterization of Teichmueller curves in terms of the existence of certain sub variation of Hodge structures. We sketch the proof that the moduli scheme of curves of …
We discuss and extend some of the results obtained in "Arakelov inequalities and the uniformization of certain rigid Shimura varieties" (math.AG/0503339), restricting ourselves to the two dimensional case, i.e. to surfaces Y mapping generically finite to the moduli stack of Abelian varieties. In particular we show that Y is a Hilber modular surfaces if and only if the dergee of the Hodge bundle satisfies the Arakelov equality. In the revised version, we corrected some minor mistakes, pointed out by the referee, and we tried to improve the presentation of the text.
We give uniformizations of the Klein quartic curve and the Fermat septic curve as Shimura curves parametrizing Abelian $6$-folds with endomorphisms $\ZZ[\z_7]$.
In this paper we recall the construction and basic properties of complex Shimura varieties and show that these properties actually characterize them. This characterization immediately implies the explicit form of Kazhdan's theorem on the conjugation of Shimura varieties. As a further corollary, we show that each Shimura variety corresponding to an adjoint group has a canonical model over its reflex field. We also indicate how this characterization implies the existence of a p-adic uniformization of certain unitary Shimura varieties. In the appendix we give a complete scheme-theoretic proof of …
The Poincaré torsor of a Shimura family of abelian varieties can be viewed both as a family of semi-abelian varieties and as a mixed Shimura variety. We show that the special subvarieties of the latter cannot all be described in terms of the group subschemes of the former. This provides a counter-example to the relative Manin-Mumford conjecture, but also some evidence in favour of Pink's conjecture on unlikely intersections in mixed Shimura varieties. The main part of the article concerns mixed Hodge structures and the uniformization of the Poincaré torsor, but other, more geometric, approache…
Let f:X-->Y be a semi-stable family of complex abelian varieties over a curve Y of genus q, and smooth over the complement of s points. If F(1,0) denotes the non-flat (1,0) part of the corresponding variation of Hodge structures, the Arakelov inequalities say that 2deg(F(1,0)) is bounded from above by g=rank(F(1,0))(2q-2+s). We show that for s>0 families reaching this bound are isogenous to the g-fold product of a modular family of elliptic curves, and a constant abelian variety. For s=0, if the flat part of the VHS is defined over the rational numbers, the family is isogeneous to the g-fold p…
We construct projective toroidal compactifications for integral models of Shimura varieties of Hodge type. We also construct integral models of the minimal (Satake-Baily-Borel) compactification. Our results essentially reduce the problem to understanding the integral models themselves. As such, they cover all previously known cases of PEL type, as well as all cases of Hodge type involving parahoric level structures. At primes where the level is hyperspecial, we show that our compactifications are canonical in a precise sense. We also provide a new proof of Y. Morita's conjecture on the everywh…
We establish a close connection between intersection multiplicities of special cycles on arithmetic models of the Shimura variety for GU(1,2) and Fourier coefficients of derivatives of certain incoherent Eisenstein series, confirming a conjecture of Kudla and Rapoport. The paper is divided into two parts. The first part is the bulk of the paper and investigates intersections of local special cycles which are defined on a certain moduli space of p-divisible groups. This moduli space of p-divisible groups can be used for the uniformization of the completion of the Shimura variety along the super…
This is a revised version of a part of the author's preprint "On p-adic uniformization of fake projective planes" (preprint, Max-Planck-Institut fuer Mathematik, 1998 (121)). In this paper we construct explicitly a Shimura surface of PEL-type, associated to a certain unitary group, whose connected components are isomorphic to Mumford's fake projective plane. We also give the canonical model, Shimura field and number of connected components of this Shimura surface. As a consequence of the construction we prove that the Mumford's fake projective plane is an arithmetic complex unit-ball quotient,…
We introduce moduli spaces of abelian varieties which are arithmetic models of Shimura varieties attached to unitary groups of signature (n-1, 1). We define arithmetic cycles on these models and study their intersection behaviour. In particular, in the non-degenerate case, we prove a relation between their intersection numbers and Fourier coefficients of the derivative at s=0 of a certain incoherent Eisenstein series for the group U(n, n). This is done by relating the arithmetic cycles to their formal counterpart from Part I via non-archimedean uniformization, and by relating the Fourier coeff…
In this article, we treat two questions on Rapoport--Zink spaces of Hodge type constructed by Hamacher and Kim. One of which is their singularities, and the other is $p$-adic uniformization of Shimura varieties. More precisely, we prove that the singularity of a Rapoport--Zink space is controlled by its asssociated local model, and the basic locus of a Kisin--Pappas integral model of a Shimura variety is uniformized by the corresponding Rapoport--Zink space. These results extend the known facts by Rapoport and Zink in the case of PEL type.
Consider a family f:A --> U of g-dimensional abelian varieties over a quasiprojective manifold U. Suppose that the induced map from U to the moduli scheme of polarized abelian varieties is generically finite and that there is a projective manifold Y, containing U as the complement of a normal crossing divisor S, such that the sheaf of logarithmic one forms is nef and that its determinant is ample with respect to U. We characterize whether $U$ is a Shimura variety by numerical data attached to the variation of Hodge structures, rather than by properties of the map from U to the moduli scheme or…

Looking at the finite étale congruence covers $X(p)$ of a complex algebraic variety $X$ equipped with a variation of integral polarized Hodge structures whose period map is quasi-finite, we show that both the minimal gonality among all curves contained in $X(p)$ and the minimal volume among all subvarieties of $X(p)$ tend to infinity with $p$. This applies for example to Shimura varieties, moduli spaces of curves, moduli spaces of abelian varieties, moduli spaces of Calabi-Yau varieties, and can be made effective in many cases. The proof goes roughly as follows. We first prove a generalization…
