We define relative Gromov-Witten invariants of a symplectic manifold relative to a codimension two symplectic submanifold. These invariants are the key ingredients in the symplectic sum formula of [IP4]. The main step is the construction of a compact space of `V-stable' maps. Simple special cases include the Hurwitz numbers for algebraic curves and the enumerative invariants of Caporaso and Harris.

In this article, we introduce the notion of good map and use it to establish Gromov-Witten theory for orbifolds.

In this paper we introduce invariants of semi-free Hamiltonian actions of $S\sp 1$ on compact symplectic manifolds (which satisfy some technical conditions related to positivity) using the space of solutions to certain gauge theoretical equations. These equations generalize at the same time the vortex equations and the holomorphicity equation used in Gromov-Witten theory. In the definition of the invariants we combine ideas coming from gauge theory and the ideas underlying the construction of Gromov-Witten invariants. In this paper, using the degeneration formula we obtain a blowup formulae of local Gromov-Witten invariants of Fano surfaces. This formula makes it possible to compute the local Gromov-Witten invariants of non-toric Fano surfaces form toric Fano surface, such as del Pezzo surfaces. This formula also verifed an expectation of Chiang-Klemm-Yau-Zaslow.

This research announcement discusses our results on Gromov-Witten theory of root gerbes. A complete calculation of genus 0 Gromov-Witten theory of $μ_{r}$-root gerbes over a smooth base scheme is obtained by a direct analysis of virtual fundamental classes. On a compact Kähler manifold $X$ with a holomorphic 2-form $\a$, there is an almost complex structure associated with $\a$. We show how this implies vanishing theorems for the Gromov-Witten invariants of $X$. This extends the approach, used in \cite{lp} for Kähler surfaces, to higher dimensions.
