Let $\M$ be a finite von Neumann algebra acting on a Hilbert space $\H$ and $Å$ be a transitive algebra containing $\M'$. In this paper we prove that if $Å$ is 2-fold transitive, then $Å$ is strongly dense in $\B(\H)$. This implies that if a transitive algebra containing a standard finite von Neumann algebra (in the sense of [Ha1]) is 2-fold transitive, then $Å$ is strongly dense in $\B(\H)$. Non-selfadjoint algebras related to free products of finite von Neumann algebras, e.g., $Ł{\mathbb{F}_n}$ and $(M_2(\cc), {1/2}Tr)*(M_2(\cc), {1/2}Tr)$, are studied. Brown measures of certain operators in $(M_2(\cc), {1/2}Tr)*(M_2(\cc), {1/2}Tr)$ are explicitly computed.
In this paper, we study uniform perturbations of von Neumann subalgebras of a von Neumann algebra. Let N and M be von Neumann subalgebras of a von Neumann algebra with finite probabilistic index in the sense of Pimsner-Popa. If N and M are sufficiently close, then N and M are unitarily equivalent. The implementing unitary can be chosen as being close to the identity.
In this paper we describe the amalgamated free product of two hyperfinite von Neumann algebras over a finite dimensional subalgebra. In general the free product is a finite direct sum of interpolated free group factors and a hyperfinite von Neumann algebra. We then show that the class of von Neumann algebras of this form is closed under taking amalgamated free products over finite dimensional subalgebras.
In this paper we describe the amalgamated free product of finite and semifinite hyperfinite von Neumann algebras over atomic type I subalgebras. To do this we extend the notions of free dimension and standard embeddings used in the related results for finite von Neumann algebras to ones which work better for the semifinite case. We also define classes R3 (of finite von Neumann algebras) and R4 (of semifinite von Neumann algebras) which are closed under such amalgamated free products.
Given an irreducible lattice $Γ$ in the product of higher rank simple Lie groups, we prove a co-finiteness result for the $Γ$-invariant von Neumann subalgebras of the group von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{L}(Γ)$, and for the $Γ$-invariant unital $C^*$-subalgebras of the reduced group $C^*$-algebra $C^*_{\rm red}(Γ)$. We use these results to show that: (i) every $Γ$-invariant von Neumann subalgebra of $\mathcal{L}(Γ)$ is generated by a normal subgroup; and (ii) given a non-amenable unitary representation $π$ of $Γ$, every $Γ$-equivariant conditional expectation on $C^*_π(Γ)$ is the canonical cond…
Jolissaint and Stalder introduced definitions of mixing and weak mixing for von Neumann subalgebras of finite von Neumann algebras. In this note, we study various algebraic and analytical properties of subalgebras with these mixing properties. We prove some basic results about mixing inclusions of von Neumann algebras and establish a connection between mixing properties and normalizers of von Neumann subalgebras. The special case of mixing subalgebras arising from inclusions of countable discrete groups finds applications to ergodic theory, in particular, a new generalization of a classical th…
We show that the continuous core of any type III free product factor has no Cartan subalgebra. This is a complement to previous works due to Houdayer--Ricard and Boutonnet--Houdayer--Raum.
Let M_i be a von Neumann algebra, and B_i be a maximal injective von Neumann subalgebra of M_i, i=1,2. If M_1 has separable predual and the center of B_1 is atomic, e.g., B_1 is a factor, then B_1\tensor B_2 is a maximal injective von Neuamnn subalgebra of M_1\tensor M_2. This partly answers a question of Popa
In this article, we give explicit examples of maximal amenable subalgebras of the $q$-Gaussian algebras, namely, the generator subalgebra is maximal amenable inside the $q$-Gaussian algebras for real numbers $q$ with its absolute value sufficiently small. To achieve this, we construct a Riesz basis in the spirit of Rădulescu and develop a structural theorem for the $q$-Gaussian algebras.
Let $M=M_1*M_2$ be a nontrivial tracial free product of finite von Neumann algebras. We prove that any amenable subalgebra of $M$ that has a diffuse intersection with $M_1$ is in fact contained in $M_1$. This has been proved by C. Houdayer under more general circumstances.
In this article, we proved the following results. Let $L(F(n_i))$ be the free group factor on $n_i$ generators and $λ(g_{i})$ be one of standard generators of $L(F(n_i))$ for $1\le i\le N$. Let $\A_i$ be the abelian von Neumann subalgebra of $L(F(n_i))$ generated by $λ(g_{i})$. Then the abelian von Neumann subalgebra $\otimes_{i=1}^N\A_i$ is a maximal injective von Neumann subalgebra of $\otimes_{i=1}^N L(F(n_i))$. When $N$ is equal to infinity, we obtained McDuff factors that contain maximal injective abelian von Neumann subalgebras.
Let $G$ be a countable discrete amenable group, ${\cal M}$ a McDuff factor von Neumann algebra, and $A$ a separable nuclear weakly dense C$^*$-subalgebra of ${\cal M}$. We show that if two centrally free actions of $G$ on ${\cal M}$ differ up to approximately inner automorphisms then they are outer conjugate by an approximately inner automorphism, in the operator norm topology, which makes $A$ invariant. In addition, when $A$ is unital, simple, and with a unique tracial state and $α$ is an automorphism of $A$ we also show that the aperiodicity of $α$ on the von Neumann algebra is equivalent to…
We revisit the connection between index and relative entropy for an inclusion of finite von Neumann algebras. We observe that the Pimsner-Popa index connects to sandwiched Renyi $p$-relative entropy for all $1/2\le p\le \infty$, including Umegaki's relative entropy at $p=1$. Based on that, we introduce a new notation of relative entropy to a subalgebra which generalizes subfactors index. This relative entropy has application in estimating decoherence time of quantum Markov semigroups.
Let $\M$ be a von Neumann algebra acting on a Hilbert space $\H$, and $\N$ be a singular von Neumann subalgebra of $\M.$ If $\N\tensor\B(\K)$ is singular in $\M\tensor\B(\K)$ for any Hilbert space $\K$, we say $\N$ is \emph{completely singular} in $\M$. We prove that if $\N$ is a singular abelian von Neumann subalgebra or if $\N$ is a singular subfactor of a type $II_1$ factor $\M$, then $\N$ is completely singular in $\M$. For any type $II_1$ factor $\M$, we construct a singular von Neumann subalgebra $\N$ of $\M$ ($\N\neq \M$) such that $\N\tensor\B(l^2(\mathbb{N}))$ is regular (hence not si…
We show that a free product of a II_1-factor and a finite von Neumann algebra with amalgamation over a finite dimensional subalgebra is always a II_1-factor, and provide an algorithm for describing it in terms of free products (with amalgamation over the scalars) and compression/dilation. As an application, we show that the class of direct sums of finitely many von Neumann algebras that are interpolated free group factors, hyperfinite II_1-factors, type I_n algebras for n finite, and finite dimensional algebras, is closed under taking free products with amalgamation over finite dimensional sub…
We study certain $q$-deformed analogues of the maximal abelian subalgebras of the group von Neumann algebras of free groups. The radial subalgebra is defined for Hecke deformed von Neumann algebras of the Coxeter group $(\mathbb{Z}/{2\mathbb{Z}})^{\star k}$ and shown to be a maximal abelian subalgebra which is singular and with Pukánszky invariant $\{\infty\}$. Further all non-equal generator masas in the $q$-deformed Gaussian von Neumann algebras are shown to be mutually non-unitarily conjugate.
Let $G$ be a discrete group acting on a von Neumann algebra $M$ by properly outer $*$-automorphisms. In this paper we study the containment $M \subseteq M\rtimes_αG$ of $M$ inside the crossed product. We characterize the intermediate von Neumann algebras, extending earlier work of other authors in the factor case. We also determine the $M$-bimodules that are closed in the Bures topology and which coincide with the $w^*$-closed ones under a mild hypothesis on $G$. We use these results to obtain a general version of Mercer's theorem concerning the extension of certain isometric $w^*$-continuous …
In this short note we classify the Cartan subalgebras in all von Neumann algebras associated with graph product groups and their free ergodic measure preserving actions on probability spaces.

The present paper is devoted to study of ring isomorphisms of $\ast$-subalgebras of Murray--von Neumann factors. Let $\cM,$ $\cN$ be von Neumann factors of type II$_1,$ and let $S(\cM),$ $S(\cN)$ be the $\ast$-algebras of all measurable operators affiliated with $\cM$ and $ \cN,$ respectively. Suppose that $\cA\subset S(\cM),$ $\cB\subset S(\cN)$ are their $\ast$-subalgebras such that $\cM\subset \cA,$ $\cN\subset \cB.$ We prove that for every ring isomorphism $Φ: \cA \to \cB$ there exist a positive invertible element $a \in \cB$ with $a^{-1}\in \cB$ and a real $\ast$-isomorphism $Ψ: \cM \to \…
We discuss different mixing properties for triples of finite von Neumann algebras $B\subset N\subset M$, and we introduce families of triples of groups $H<K<G$ whose associated von Neumann algebras $L(H)\subset L(K)\subset L(G)$ satisfy $\mathcal{N}_{L(G)}(L(H))"=L(K)$. It turns out that the latter equality is implied by two conditions: the equality $\mathcal{N}_G(H)=K$ and the above mentioned mixing properties. Our families of examples also allow us to exhibit examples of pairs $H<G$ such that $L(\mathcal{N}_G(H))\not=\mathcal{N}_{L(G)}(L(H))"$.
Let $(M, φ) = (M_1, φ_1) \ast (M_2, φ_2)$ be a free product of arbitrary von Neumann algebras endowed with faithful normal states. Assume that the centralizer $M_1^{φ_1}$ is diffuse. We first show that any intermediate subalgebra $M_1 \subset Q \subset M$ which has nontrivial central sequences in $M$ is necessarily equal to $M_1$. Then we obtain a general structural result for all the intermediate subalgebras $M_1 \subset Q \subset M$ with expectation. We deduce that any diffuse amenable von Neumann algebra can be concretely realized as a maximal amenable subalgebra with expectation inside a f…
Ge asked the question whether $LF_{\infty}$ can be embedded into $LF_2$ as a maximal subfactor. We answer it affirmatively by three different approaches, all containing the same key ingredient: the existence of maximal subgroups with infinite index. We also show that point stabilizer subgroups for every faithful, 4-transitive action on an infinite set give rise to maximal von Neumann subalgebras. Combining this with known results on constructing faithful, highly transitive actions, we get many maximal von Neumann subalgebras arising from maximal subgroups with infinite index.
In this paper, we exhibit strongly singular maximal abelian subalgebras living inside certain k-folded tensors of von Neumann group factors. The two classes of groups under consideration are the free groups of rank greater than 2 and the free product of m>2 groups, all finite and having the same order p>2 (m>p-1). We prove actually more, namely that the unique trace preserving conditional expectations from these group factors onto their Laplacian subalgebras are asymptotic homomorphisms, which in turn implies that the subalgebras are strongly singular masas.
We prove that for any infinite, maximal amenable subgroup $H$ in a hyperbolic group $G$, the von Neumann subalgebra $LH$ is maximal amenable inside $LG$. It provides many new, explicit examples of maximal amenable subalgebras in II$_1$ factors. We also prove similar maximal amenability results for direct products of relatively hyperbolic groups and orbit equivalence relations arising from measure-preserving actions of such groups.
We study the complexity of the classification problem for Cartan subalgebras in von Neumann algebras. We construct a large family of II$_1$ factors whose Cartan subalgebras up to unitary conjugacy are not classifiable by countable structures, providing the first such examples. Additionally, we construct examples of II$_1$ factors whose Cartan subalgebras up to conjugacy by an automorphism are not classifiable by countable structures. Finally, we show directly that the Cartan subalgebras of the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor up to unitary conjugacy are not classifiable by countable structures, and d…
We say that a countable discrete group $Γ$ satisfies the invariant von Neumann subalgebras rigidity (ISR) property if every $Γ$- invariant von Neumann subalgebra $\mathcal{M}$ in $L(Γ)$ is of the form $L(Λ)$ for some normal subgroup $Λ\lhd Γ$. We show many ``negatively curved" groups, including all torsion free non-amenable hyperbolic groups and torsion free groups with positive first $L^2$-Betti number under a mild assumption, and certain finite direct product of them have this property. We also discuss whether the torsion-free assumption can be relaxed.
We initiate a study of maximal subgroups and maximal von Neumann subalgebras which have the Haagerup property. We determine maximal Haagerup subgroups inside $\mathbb{Z}^2 \rtimes SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ and obtain several explicit instances where maximal Haagerup subgroups yield maximal Haagerup subalgebras. Our techniques are on one hand based on group-theoretic considerations, and on the other on certain results on intermediate von Neumann algebras, in particular these allowing us to deduce that all the intermediate algebras for certain inclusions arise from groups or from group actions. Some rem…
We investigate the position of amenable subalgebras in arbitrary amalgamated free product von Neumann algebras $M = M_1 \ast_B M_2$. Our main result states that under natural analytic assumptions, any amenable subalgebra of $M$ that has a large intersection with $M_1$ is actually contained in $M_1$. The proof does not rely on Popa's asymptotic orthogonality property but on the study of non normal conditional expectations.
This paper is devoted to local derivations on subalgebras on the algebra $S(M, τ)$ of all $τ$-measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra $M$ without abelian summands and with a faithful normal semi-finite trace $τ.$ We prove that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a solid $\ast$-subalgebra in $S(M, τ)$ such that $p\in \mathcal{A}$ for all projection $p\in M$ with finite trace, then every local derivation on the algebra $\mathcal{A}$ is a derivation. This result is new even in the case standard subalgebras on the algebra $B(H)$ of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space $H.$ We also ap…
In this paper we define $L^{2}$-homology and $L^{2}$-Betti numbers for tracial *-algebras $A$ with respect to a von Neumann subalgebra $B$. When $B$ is reduced to the field of complex numbers we recover the $L^{2}$-Betti numbers of $A$ as defined by A. Connes and D. Shlyakhtenko, but we will show that taking into account the role of the von Neumann subalgebra yields to a number of advantages like, for instance, a much better behavior with respect to compression and directed sums. Our main result is that $L^{2}$-homology and $L^{2}$-Betti numbers of discrete measured groupoids and equivalence r…
For von Neumann algebras M, N not isomorphic to C^2 and without type I_2 summands, we show that for an order-isomorphism f:AbSub(M)->AbSub(N) between the posets of abelian von Neumann subalgebras of M and N, there is a unique Jordan *-isomorphism g:M->N with the image g[S] equal to f(S) for each abelian von Neumann subalgebra S of M. The converse also holds. This shows the Jordan structure of a von Neumann algebra not isomorphic to C^2 and without type I_2 summands is determined by the poset of its abelian subalgebras, and has implications in recent approaches to foundational issues in quantum…
We provide a general criterion to deduce maximal amenability of von Neumann subalgebras $LΛ\subset LΓ$ arising from amenable subgroups $Λ$ of discrete countable groups $Γ$. The criterion is expressed in terms of $Λ$-invariant measures on some compact $Γ$-space. The strategy of proof is different from S. Popa's approach to maximal amenability via central sequences [Po83], and relies on elementary computations in a crossed-product C*-algebra.
An open question, raised independently by several authors, asks if a closed amenable subalgebra of ${\mathcal B}({\mathcal H})$ must be similar to an amenable C*-algebra; the question remains open even for singly-generated algebras. In this article we show that any closed, commutative, operator amenable subalgebra of a finite von Neumann algebra ${\mathcal M}$ is similar to a commutative C*-subalgebra of ${\mathcal M}$, with the similarity implemented by an element of ${\mathcal M}$. Our proof makes use of the algebra of measurable operators affiliated to ${\mathcal M}$.
Consider a compact locally symmetric space $M$ of rank $r$, with fundamental group $Γ$. The von Neumann algebra $\vn(Γ)$ is the convolution algebra of functions $f\in\ell_2(Γ)$ which act by left convolution on $\ell_2(Γ)$. Let $T^r$ be a totally geodesic flat torus of dimension $r$ in $M$ and let $Γ_0\cong\bb Z^r$ be the image of the fundamental group of $T^r$ in $Γ$. Then $\vn(Γ_0)$ is a maximal abelian $\star$-subalgebra of $\vn(Γ)$ and its unitary normalizer is as small as possible. If $M$ has constant negative curvature then the Pukánszky invariant of $\vn(Γ_0)$ is $\infty$.
We prove that $L(SL_2(\textbf{k}))$ is a maximal Haagerup von Neumann subalgebra in $L(\textbf{k}^2\rtimes SL_2(\textbf{k}))$ for $\textbf{k}=\mathbb{Q}$. Then we show how to modify the proof to handle $\textbf{k}=\mathbb{Z}$. The key step for the proof is a complete description of all intermediate von Neumann subalgebras between $L(SL_2(\textbf{k}))$ and $L^{\infty}(Y)\rtimes SL_2(\textbf{k})$, where $SL_2(\textbf{k})\curvearrowright Y$ denotes the quotient of the algebraic action $SL_2(\textbf{k})\curvearrowright \widehat{\textbf{k}^2}$ by modding out the relation $ϕ\sim ϕ'$, where $ϕ$, $ϕ'\…
Richard Kadison showed that not every commutative von Neumann subalgebra of a factor von Neumann algebra is equal to its relative double commutant. We prove that every commutative C*-subalgebra of a centrally prime C*-algebra $B$ equals its relative approximate double commutant. If $B$ is a von Neumann algebra, there is a related distance formula.
Suppose F is a finite set of selfadjoint elements in a tracial von Neumann algebra M. For $α>0$, F is $α$-bounded if the free packing $α$-entropy of F is bounded from above. We say that M is strongly 1-bounded if M has a 1-bounded finite set of selfadjoint generators F such that there exists an x in F with finite free entropy. It is shown that if M is strongly 1-bounded, then any finite set of selfadjoint generators G for M is 1-bounded and the microstates free entropy dimension of G is less than or equal to 1; consequently, a strongly 1-bounded von Neumann algebra is not isomorphic to an inte…
We prove that the relative commutant of a diffuse von Neumann subalgebra in a hyperbolic group von Neumann algebra is always injective. It follows that any non-injective subfactor in a hyperbolic group von Neumann algebra is non-Gamma and prime. The proof is based on C*-algebra theory.
We give a numerical characterization of mutual orthogonality (that is, complementarity) for subalgebras. In order to give such a characterization for mutually orthogonal subalgebras $A$ and $B$ of the $k \times k$ matrix algebra $M_k(\mathbb{C})$, where $A$ and $B$ are isomorphic to some $M_n(\mathbb{C})$ $(n \leq k)$, we consider a density matrix which is induced from the pair $\{A, B\}$. We show that $A$ and $B$ are mutually orthogonal if and only if the von Neumann entropy of the density matrix is the maximum value $2\log n$, which is the logarithm of the dimension of the subfactors.
We show that any amenable von Neumann subalgebra of any free Araki-Woods factor that is globally invariant under the modular automorphism group of the free quasi-free state is necessarily contained in the almost periodic free summand.
The generating abelian subalgebras arsing from vectors in the ergodic component of Hiai's construction of the q-deformed Araki-Woods von Neumann algebras are quasi-split.
We prove a basic result about tensor products of a $\text{II}_1$ factor with a finite von Neumann algebra and use it to answer, affirmatively, a question asked by S. Popa about maximal injective factors.
We show that two cocycle-conjugate endomorphisms of an arbitrary von Neumann algebra that satisfy certain stability conditions are conjugate endomorphisms, when restricted to some specific von Neumann subalgebras. As a consequence of this result, we obtain a new criterion for conjugacy of Powers shift endomorphisms acting on factors of type $\rm{I}\sb{\infty}.$
This is a continuation of our previous paper studying the structure of Cartan subalgebras of von Neumann factors of type II_1. We provide more examples of II_1 factors having either zero, one or several Cartan subalgebras. We also prove a rigidity result for some group measure space II_1 factors.
We give a necessary and sufficient criterion when a normal CP-map on a von Neumann algebra admits a restriction to a maximal commutative subalgebra. We apply this result to give a far reaching generalization of Rebolledo's sufficient criterion for the Lindblad generator of a Markov semigroup on B(G).
The heat semigroup on discrete hypercubes is well-known to be contractive over $L_p$-spaces for $1<p<\infty$. A question of Mendel and Naor \cite{MN14} concerns a stronger contraction property in the tail spaces, which is known as the heat-smoothing conjecture. Eskenazis and Ivanisvili \cite{EI20} considered a Gaussian analog of this conjecture and resolved some special cases. In particular, they proved that heat-smoothing type conjecture holds for holomorphic functions in the Gaussian spaces with sharp constants. In this paper, we prove analogous sharp inequalities for holomorphic subalgebras…
In this paper we develop the theory of strongly singular subalgebras of von Neumann algebras, begun in earlier work. We mainly examine the situation of type $\tto$ factors arising from countable discrete groups. We give simple criteria for strong singularity, and use them to construct strongly singular subalgebras. We particularly focus on groups which act on geometric objects, where the underlying geometry leads to strong singularity.
We prove that for every bounded linear operator $T:X\to X$, where $X$ is a non-reflexive quotient of a von Neumann algebra, the point spectrum of $T^*$ is non-empty (i.e. for some $λ\in\mathbb C$ the operator $λI-T$ fails to have dense range.) In particular, and as an application, we obtain that such a space cannot support a topologically transitive operator.

In this paper, for a C*-Algebra A with M = M(A) an AW*-algebra, or equivalently, for an essential, norm-closed, two-sided ideal A of an AW*-algebra M, we investigate the strict approximability of the elements of M from commutative C*- subalgebras of A. In the relevant case of the norm-closed linear span A of all finite projections in a semi-finite AW*-algebra M we shall give a complete description of the strict closure in M of any maximal abelian self-adjoint subalgebra (masa) of A. We shall see that the situation is completely different for discrete respectively continuous M : in the discrete…
For a right-angled Coxeter system $(W,S)$ and $q>0$, let $\mathcal{M}_q$ be the associated Hecke von Neumann algebra, which is generated by self-adjoint operators $T_s, s \in S$ satisfying the Hecke relation $(\sqrt{q}\: T_s - q) (\sqrt{q} \: T_s + 1) = 0$ as well as suitable commutation relations. Under the assumption that $(W, S)$ is irreducible and $\vert S \vert \geq 3$ it was proved by Garncarek that $\mathcal{M}_q$ is a factor (of type II$_1$) for a range $q \in [ρ, ρ^{-1}]$ and otherwise $\mathcal{M}_q$ is the direct sum of a II$_1$-factor and $\mathbb{C}$. In this paper we prove (under…
