In this article, we proved the following results. Let $L(F(n_i))$ be the free group factor on $n_i$ generators and $λ(g_{i})$ be one of standard generators of $L(F(n_i))$ for $1\le i\le N$. Let $\A_i$ be the abelian von Neumann subalgebra of $L(F(n_i))$ generated by $λ(g_{i})$. Then the abelian von Neumann subalgebra $\otimes_{i=1}^N\A_i$ is a maximal injective von Neumann subalgebra of $\otimes_{i=1}^N L(F(n_i))$. When $N$ is equal to infinity, we obtained McDuff factors that contain maximal injective abelian von Neumann subalgebras.
Let M_i be a von Neumann algebra, and B_i be a maximal injective von Neumann subalgebra of M_i, i=1,2. If M_1 has separable predual and the center of B_1 is atomic, e.g., B_1 is a factor, then B_1\tensor B_2 is a maximal injective von Neuamnn subalgebra of M_1\tensor M_2. This partly answers a question of Popa
We give an operator space characterization of subalgebras of $C(Ω,M_n)$. We also describe injective subspaces of $C(Ω,M_n)$ and then give applications to sub-TROs of $C(Ω,M_n)$. Finally, we prove an `$n$-minimal version' of the Christensen-Effros-Sinclair representation theorem.
We prove a basic result about tensor products of a $\text{II}_1$ factor with a finite von Neumann algebra and use it to answer, affirmatively, a question asked by S. Popa about maximal injective factors.
A crossed product functor is said to be injective if it takes injective morphisms to injective morphisms. In this paper we show that every locally compact group $G$ admits a maximal injective crossed product $A\mapsto A\rtimes_{\inj}G$. Moreover, we give an explicit construction of this functor that depends only on the maximal crossed product and the existence of $G$-injective $C^*$-algebras; this is a sort of a `dual' result to the construction of the minimal exact crossed product functor, the latter having been studied for its relationship to the Baum-Connes conjecture. It turns out that $\r…
The radial (or Laplacian) masa in a free group factor is the abelian von Neumann algebra generated by the sum of the generators (of the free group) and their inverses. The main result of this paper is that the radial masa is a maximal injective von Neumann subalgebra of a free group factor. We also investigate tensor products of maximal injective algebras. Given two inclusions $B_i\subset M_i$ of type $\mathrm{I}$ von Neumann algebras in finite von Neumann algebras such that each $B_i$ is maximal injective in $M_i$, we show that the tensor product $B_1\ \bar{\otimes}\ B_2$ is maximal injective…
We present families of pairs of finite von Neumann algebras $A\subset M$ where $A$ is a maximal injective masa in the type $\mathrm{II}_1$ factor $M$ with separable predual. Our results make use of the strong mixing and the asymptotic orthogonality properties of $A$ in $M$ and are borrowed from ideas of S. Popa who proved that if $G$ is a non abelian free group and if $a$ is one of its generators, then the von Neumann algebra generated by $a$ is maximal injective in the factor $L(G)$. Our results apply to pairs $H<G$ where $H$ is an infinite abelian subgroup of a suitable amalgamated product g…
In this article, we give explicit examples of maximal amenable subalgebras of the $q$-Gaussian algebras, namely, the generator subalgebra is maximal amenable inside the $q$-Gaussian algebras for real numbers $q$ with its absolute value sufficiently small. To achieve this, we construct a Riesz basis in the spirit of Rădulescu and develop a structural theorem for the $q$-Gaussian algebras.
We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the subalgebra of analytic elements associated with a periodic C*-dynamical system to be a maximal norm-closed subalgebra. Our conditions are in terms of the Arveson spectrum of the action. We also describe equivalent properties of the system in terms of the strong Connes spectrum and the simplicity of the crossed product.
We consider some conditions similar to Ozawa's condition (AO), and prove that if a non-injective factor satisfies such a condition and has the W*CBAP, then it has no Cartan subalgebras. As a corollary, we prove that $\rm II_1$ factors of universal orthogonal and unitary discrete quantum groups have no Cartan subalgebras. We also prove that continuous cores of type $\rm III_1$ factors with such a condition are semisolid as a $\rm II_\infty$ factor.
We give a necessary and sufficient criterion when a normal CP-map on a von Neumann algebra admits a restriction to a maximal commutative subalgebra. We apply this result to give a far reaching generalization of Rebolledo's sufficient criterion for the Lindblad generator of a Markov semigroup on B(G).
We solve, mainly by counterexamples, many natural questions regarding maximal commutative subalgebras invariant under CP-maps or semigroups of CP-maps on a von Neumann algebra. In particular, we discuss the structure of the generators of norm continuous semigroups on B(G) leaving a maximal commutative subalgebra invariant and show that there exists Markov CP-semigroups on M_d without invariant maximal commutative subalgebras for any d>2.
We prove that the relative commutant of a diffuse von Neumann subalgebra in a hyperbolic group von Neumann algebra is always injective. It follows that any non-injective subfactor in a hyperbolic group von Neumann algebra is non-Gamma and prime. The proof is based on C*-algebra theory.
An $\widetilde A_2$ group $Γ$ acts simply transitively on the vertices of an affine building $\triangle$. We study certain subgroups $Γ_0 \cong {\Bbb Z}^2$ which act on certain apartments of $\triangle$. If one of these subgroups acts simply transitively on an apartment, then the corresponding subalgebra of the group von Neumann algebra is maximal abelian and singular. Moreover the Pukánszky invariant contains a type $I_{\infty}$ summand.
We give several examples of Douglas Algebras that do not have any maximal subalgebra. We find a condition on these algebras that guarantees that some do not have any minimal superalgebra. We also show that if $A$ is the only maximal subalgebra of a Douglas algebra $B$, then the algebra $A$ does not have any maximal subalgebra.
We prove that $L(SL_2(\textbf{k}))$ is a maximal Haagerup von Neumann subalgebra in $L(\textbf{k}^2\rtimes SL_2(\textbf{k}))$ for $\textbf{k}=\mathbb{Q}$. Then we show how to modify the proof to handle $\textbf{k}=\mathbb{Z}$. The key step for the proof is a complete description of all intermediate von Neumann subalgebras between $L(SL_2(\textbf{k}))$ and $L^{\infty}(Y)\rtimes SL_2(\textbf{k})$, where $SL_2(\textbf{k})\curvearrowright Y$ denotes the quotient of the algebraic action $SL_2(\textbf{k})\curvearrowright \widehat{\textbf{k}^2}$ by modding out the relation $ϕ\sim ϕ'$, where $ϕ$, $ϕ'\…
We prove that the radial masa C in the free group factor is disjoint from other maximal amenable subalgebras in the following sense: any distinct maximal amenable subalgebra cannot have diffuse intersection with C.
Ge asked the question whether $LF_{\infty}$ can be embedded into $LF_2$ as a maximal subfactor. We answer it affirmatively by three different approaches, all containing the same key ingredient: the existence of maximal subgroups with infinite index. We also show that point stabilizer subgroups for every faithful, 4-transitive action on an infinite set give rise to maximal von Neumann subalgebras. Combining this with known results on constructing faithful, highly transitive actions, we get many maximal von Neumann subalgebras arising from maximal subgroups with infinite index.
In this paper, we give examples of maximal amenable subalgebras of the free group factor of two generators. More precisely, we consider two copies of the hyperfinite factor $R_i$ of type $\mathrm{II}_1$. From each $R_i$, we take a Haar unitary $u_i$ which generates a Cartan subalgebra of it. We show that the von Neumann subalgebra generated by the self-adjoint operator $u_1+u_1^{-1}+u_2+u_2^{-1}$ is maximal amenable in the free product. This provides infinitely many non-unitary conjugate maximal amenable MASAs.
We determine when there is a unique conditional expectation from a semifinite von Neumann algebra onto a singly-generated maximal abelian *-subalgebra. Our work extends the results of Kadison and Singer via new methods, notably the observation that a unique conditional expectation onto a singly-generated maximal abelian *-subalgebra must be normal.
To every subfactor planar algebra was associated a II_1 factor with a canonical abelian subalgebra generated by the cup tangle. Using Popa's approximative orthogonality property, we show that this cup subalgebra is maximal amenable.
A new C*-enlargement of a C*-algebra $A$ nested between the local multiplier algebra $M_{\text{loc}}(A)$ of $A$ and its injective envelope $I(A)$ is introduced. Various aspects of this maximal C*-algebra of quotients, $Q_{\text{max}}(A)$, are studied, notably in the setting of AW*-algebras. As a by-product we obtain a new example of a type I C*-algebra $A$ such that $M_{\text{loc}}(M_{\text{loc}}(A))\ne M_{\text{loc}}(A)$.
We prove that for any infinite, maximal amenable subgroup $H$ in a hyperbolic group $G$, the von Neumann subalgebra $LH$ is maximal amenable inside $LG$. It provides many new, explicit examples of maximal amenable subalgebras in II$_1$ factors. We also prove similar maximal amenability results for direct products of relatively hyperbolic groups and orbit equivalence relations arising from measure-preserving actions of such groups.
We initiate a study of maximal subgroups and maximal von Neumann subalgebras which have the Haagerup property. We determine maximal Haagerup subgroups inside $\mathbb{Z}^2 \rtimes SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ and obtain several explicit instances where maximal Haagerup subgroups yield maximal Haagerup subalgebras. Our techniques are on one hand based on group-theoretic considerations, and on the other on certain results on intermediate von Neumann algebras, in particular these allowing us to deduce that all the intermediate algebras for certain inclusions arise from groups or from group actions. Some rem…
We provide a general criterion to deduce maximal amenability of von Neumann subalgebras $LΛ\subset LΓ$ arising from amenable subgroups $Λ$ of discrete countable groups $Γ$. The criterion is expressed in terms of $Λ$-invariant measures on some compact $Γ$-space. The strategy of proof is different from S. Popa's approach to maximal amenability via central sequences [Po83], and relies on elementary computations in a crossed-product C*-algebra.
For a maximal abelian subalgebra $A\subset M$ in a finite von Neumann algebra, we consider an invariant due to Takesaki which is an equivalence relation on a standard probability space. We give several characterization of this invariant and show that it can be reconstructed from the A-bimodule structure of the GNS Hilbert space $L^2(M)$. In particular, we show that this invariant is induced by the action of the normalizer on A. Hence, this gives a new proof to a question of Takesaki.
We construct new pairs of orthogonal maximal abelian $*$-subalgebras of $M_6(\mathbb C)$, by classifying all self-adjoint complex Hadamard matrices of order 6. In particular, we exhibit a non-affine one-parameter family of non-equivalent Hadamard matrices of order 6. In the last part of the paper we present other previously unknown examples of complex Hadamard matrices of higher orders.
We aim to characterize the category of injective *-homomorphisms between commutative C*-subalgebras of a given C*-algebra A. We reduce this problem to finding a weakly terminal commutative subalgebra of A, and solve the latter for various C*-algebras, including all commutative ones and all type I von Neumann algebras. This addresses a natural generalization of the Mackey-Piron programme: which lattices are those of closed subspaces of Hilbert space? We also discuss the way this categorified generalization differs from the original question.
In this paper we exploit the fact that a Cuntz C$^*$-algebra is a groupoid C$^*$-algebra to facilitate the study of non-self-adjoint subalgebras of $O_n$. The Cuntz groupoid is not principal and the spectral theorem for bimodules does not apply in full generality. We characterize the bimodules (over a natural masa) which are determined by their spectra in the Cuntz groupoid; these are exactly the ones which are invariant under the guage automorphisms and exactly the ones which are generated by the Cuntz partial isometries which they contain. We investigate analytic subalgebras of $O_n, n$ fini…
We study certain $q$-deformed analogues of the maximal abelian subalgebras of the group von Neumann algebras of free groups. The radial subalgebra is defined for Hecke deformed von Neumann algebras of the Coxeter group $(\mathbb{Z}/{2\mathbb{Z}})^{\star k}$ and shown to be a maximal abelian subalgebra which is singular and with Pukánszky invariant $\{\infty\}$. Further all non-equal generator masas in the $q$-deformed Gaussian von Neumann algebras are shown to be mutually non-unitarily conjugate.
We present a uniqueness theorem for k-graph C*-algebras that requires neither an aperiodicity nor a gauge invariance assumption. Specifically, we prove that for the injectivity of a representation of a k-graph C*-algebra, it is sufficient that the representation be injective on a distinguished abelian C*-subalgebra. A crucial part of the proof is the application of an abstract uniqueness theorem, which says that such a uniqueness property follows from the existence of a jointly faithful collection of states on the ambient C*-algebra, each of which is the unique extension of a state on the dist…
The reduced $C^*$-algebra of the interior of the isotropy in any Hausdorff étale groupoid $G$ embeds as a $C^*$-subalgebra $M$ of the reduced $C^*$-algebra of $G$. We prove that the set of pure states of $M$ with unique extension is dense, and deduce that any representation of the reduced $C^*$-algebra of $G$ that is injective on $M$ is faithful. We prove that there is a conditional expectation from the reduced $C^*$-algebra of $G$ onto $M$ if and only if the interior of the isotropy in $G$ is closed. Using this, we prove that when the interior of the isotropy is abelian and closed, $M$ is a C…
Given a state on an algebra of bounded quantum-mechanical observables (the self-adjoint part of a C*-algebra), we investigate those subalgebras that are maximal with respect to the property that the given state's restriction to the subalgebra is a mixture of dispersion-free states---what we call maximal "beable" subalgebras (borrowing a terminology due to J. S. Bell). We also extend our investigation to the theory of algebras of unbounded observables (as developed by R. Kadison), and show how our results articulate a solid mathematical foundation for central tenets of the orthodox Copenhagen i…
In the past two decades, Sorin Popa's breakthrough deformation/rigidity theory has produced remarkable rigidity results for von Neumann algebras $M$ which can be deformed inside a larger algebra $\widetilde M \supseteq M$ by an action $α: \mathbb{R} \to {\rm Aut}(\widetilde M)$, while simultaneously containing subalgebras $Q$ {\it rigid} with respect to that deformation, that is, such that $α_t \to {\rm id}$ uniformly on the unit ball of $Q$ as $t \to 0$. However, it has remained unclear how to exploit the interplay between distinct rigid subalgebras not in specified relative position. We show…
Let $A$ and $B$ be two maximal abelian *-subalgebras of the $n\times n$ complex matrices $M_n(\mathbb{C}).$ To study the movement of the inner automorphisms of $M_n(\mathbb{C}),$ we modify the Connes-St$ø$rmer relative entropy $H(A | B)$ and the Connes relative entropy $H_ϕ(A | B)$ with respect to a state $ϕ,$ and introduce the two kinds of the constant $h(A | B)$ and $h_ϕ(A | B).$ For the unistochastic matrix $b(u)$ defined by a unitary $u$ with $B = uAu^*,$ we show that $h(A | B)$ is the entropy $H(b(u))$ of $b(u).$ This is obtained by our computation of $h_ϕ(A | B).$ The $h(A | B)$ attains …
In this paper, we present a new class of strongly singular maximal abelian subalgebras living inside the k-folded tensor product of the free group factor (on N>1 generators). A. Sinclair and R. Smith introduced the class of strongly singular maximal abelian von Neumann algebras (MASA) of type II_1 factors. One of their examples was the Laplacian subalgebra of the free group factor, known to be a singularMASA. Using the techniques presented by A. Sinclair and R.Smith, we show that the Laplacian subalgebra of the k-folded tensor product of the free group factor with itself is a strongly singular…
In this paper, we prove that the cycline subalgbra of a $k$-graph C*-algebra is maximal abelian, and show when it is a Cartan subalgebra (in the sense of Renault).
In this paper, we exhibit strongly singular maximal abelian subalgebras living inside certain k-folded tensors of von Neumann group factors. The two classes of groups under consideration are the free groups of rank greater than 2 and the free product of m>2 groups, all finite and having the same order p>2 (m>p-1). We prove actually more, namely that the unique trace preserving conditional expectations from these group factors onto their Laplacian subalgebras are asymptotic homomorphisms, which in turn implies that the subalgebras are strongly singular masas.
For a right-angled Coxeter system $(W,S)$ and $q>0$, let $\mathcal{M}_q$ be the associated Hecke von Neumann algebra, which is generated by self-adjoint operators $T_s, s \in S$ satisfying the Hecke relation $(\sqrt{q}\: T_s - q) (\sqrt{q} \: T_s + 1) = 0$ as well as suitable commutation relations. Under the assumption that $(W, S)$ is irreducible and $\vert S \vert \geq 3$ it was proved by Garncarek that $\mathcal{M}_q$ is a factor (of type II$_1$) for a range $q \in [ρ, ρ^{-1}]$ and otherwise $\mathcal{M}_q$ is the direct sum of a II$_1$-factor and $\mathbb{C}$. In this paper we prove (under…
