We study the minimal length elements in some double cosets of Coxeter groups and use them to study Lusztig's $G$-stable pieces and the generalization of $G$-stable pieces introduced by Lu and Yakimov. We also use them to study the minimal length elements in a conjugacy class of a finite Coxeter group and prove a conjecture in \cite{GKP}.
We enlarge a Coxeter group into a category, with one object for each finite parabolic subgroup, encoding the combinatorics of double cosets. This category, the singular Coxeter monoid, is connected to the geometry of partial flag varieties. Our main result is a presentation of this category by generators and relations. We also provide a new description of reduced expressions for double cosets. We describe all the braid relations between such reduced expressions, and prove an analogue of Matsumoto's theorem. This gives a proper development of ideas first introduced by Geordie Williamson. In typ…
Let $G$ be a real-reductive Lie group and let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be two subgroups given by involutions. We show how the technique of gradient maps can be used in order to obtain a new proof of Matsuki's parametrization of the closed double cosets $G_1\backslash G/G_2$ by Cartan subsets. We also describe the elements sitting in non-closed double cosets.
For some infinite-dimensional groups $G$ and suitable subgroups $K$ there exists a monoid structure on the set $K\backslash G/K$ of double cosets of $G$ with respect to $K$. In this paper we show that the group $B_\infty$, of the braids with finitely many crossings on infinitely many strands, admits such a structure.
We construct spherical subgroups in infinite-dimensional classical groups $G$ (usually they are not symmetric and their finite-dimensional analogs are not spherical). We present a structure of a semigroup on double cosets $L\setminus G/L$ for various subgroups $L$ in $G$, moreover these semigroups act in spaces of $L$-fixed vectors in unitary representations of $G$. We also obtain semigroup envelops of groups $G$ generalizing constructions of operator colligations.
The permutation representation afforded by a Coxeter group W acting on the cosets of a standard parabolic subgroup inherits many nice properties from W such as a shellable Bruhat order and a flat deformation over Z[q] to a representation of the corresponding Hecke algebra. In this paper we define a larger class of ``quasiparabolic" subgroups (more generally, quasiparabolic W-sets), and show that they also inherit these properties. Our motivating example is the action of the symmetric group on fixed-point-free involutions by conjugation.
We make a fine study of the SO(2,C)-double coset decomposition in SL(2,C) and give a full description of the intersection of the various cells with the complex crown Xi of SL(2,R)/SO(2). A non-linear convexity theorem is proved and applications to analytically continued spherical functions are given.
Let G be a locally compact group, H and K be two closed sub-groups of G, and N be the normalizer group of K in G. In this paper, the existence and properties of a rho-function for the triple (K,G,H) and an N-strongly quasi-invariant measure of double coset space K\G/H is investigated. In particular, it is shown that any such measure arises from a rho-function. Furthermore, the conditions under which an N-strongly quasi-invariant measure arises from a rho-function are studied.
For infinite-dimensional groups $G\supset K$ the double cosets $K\setminus G/K$ quite often admit a structure of a semigroup; these semigroups act in $K$-fixed vectors of unitary representations of $G$. We show that such semigroups can be obtained as limits of double cosets hypergroups (or Iwahori--Hecke type algebras) on finite-dimensional (or finite) groups.
We study a class of double coset spaces R_A \backslash G_1 \times G_2 /R_C, where G_1 and G_2 are connected reductive algebraic groups, and R_A and R_C are certain spherical subgroups of G_1 \times G_2 obtained by ``identifying'' Levi factors of parabolic subgroups in G_1 and G_2. Such double cosets naturally appear in the symplectic leaf decompositions of Poisson homogeneous spaces of complex reductive groups with the Belavin-Drinfeld Poisson structures. They also appear in orbit decompositions of the De Concini-Procesi compactifications of semi-simple groups of adjoint type. We find explicit…
Let G be a real form of a complex reductive group. Suppose that we are given involutions σand θof G. Let H=G^σdenote the fixed group of σand let K=G^θdenote the fixed group of θ. We are interested in calculating the double coset space H\backslash G/K. We use moment map and invariant theoretic techniques to calculate the double cosets, especially the ones that are closed. One salient point of our results is a stratification of a quotient of a compact torus over which the closed double cosets fiber as a collection of trivial bundles.
We consider a group $GL(\infty)$ and its parabolic subgroup $B$ corresponding to partition $\infty=\infty+m+\infty$. Denote by $P$ the kernel of the natural homomorphism $B\to GL(m)$. We show that the space of double cosets of $GL(\infty)$ by $P$ admits a natural structure of a semigroup. In fact this semigroup acts in subspaces of $P$-fixed vectors of some unitary representations of $GL(\infty)$ over finite field.
Consider the space of double cosets of the product of $n$ copies of $\SU(2)$ with respect to the diagonal subgroup. We get a parametrization of this space, the radial part of the Haar measure, and explicit formulas for the actions of the group of outer automorphisms of the free group $F_{n-1}$ and of the braid group of $n-1$ strings.
Let $G$ be a finite group. Let $H, K$ be subgroups of $G$ and $H \backslash G / K$ the double coset space. Let $Q$ be a probability on $G$ which is constant on conjugacy classes ($Q(s^{-1} t s) = Q(t)$). The random walk driven by $Q$ on $G$ projects to a Markov chain on $H \backslash G /K$. This allows analysis of the lumped chain using the representation theory of $G$. Examples include coagulation-fragmentation processes and natural Markov chains on contingency tables. Our main example projects the random transvections walk on $GL_n(q)$ onto a Markov chain on $S_n$ via the Bruhat decompositio…
We show that double cosets of the infinite symmetric group with respect to some special subgroups admit natural structures of semigroups. We interpret elements of such semigroups in combinatorial terms (chips, colored graphs, two-dimensional surfaces with polygonal tiling) and describe explicitly the multiplications.
We consider a product of three copies of infinite symmetric group and its representations spherical with respect to the diagonal subgroup. We show that such representations generate functors from a certain category of simplicial two-dimensional surfaces to the category of Hilbert spaces and bounded linear operators.
We give a proof that the expected counting of strings attached to giant graviton branes in AdS_5 x S^5, as constrained by the Gauss Law, matches the dimension spanned by the expected dual operators in the gauge theory. The counting of string-brane configurations is formulated as a graph counting problem, which can be expressed as the number of points on a double coset involving permutation groups. Fourier transformation on the double coset suggests an ansatz for the diagonalization of the one-loop dilatation operator in this sector of strings attached to giant graviton branes. The ansatz agree…
We construct $p$-adic analogs of operator colligations and their characteristic functions. Consider a $p$-adic group $G=GL(α+k\infty, Q_p)$, its subgroup $L=O(k\infty,Z_p)$, and the subgroup $K=O(\infty,Z_p)$ embedded to $L$ diagonally. We show that double cosets $Γ= K\setminus G/K$ admit a structure of a semigroup, $Γ$ acts naturally in $K$-fixed vectors of unitary representations of $G$. For each double coset we assign a 'characteristic function', which sends a certain Bruhat--Tits building to another building (buildings are finite-dimensional); image of the distinguished boundary is contain…
We study the $p$-adic loop group Iwahori-Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}(G^+,I)$ constructed by Braverman, Kazhdan, and Patnaik and give positive answers to two of their conjectures. First, we algebraically develop the "double coset basis" of $\mathcal{H}(G^+,I)$ given by indicator functions of double cosets. We prove a generalization of the Iwahori-Matsumoto formula, and as a consequence, we prove that the structure coefficients of the double coset basis are polynomials in the order of the residue field. The basis is naturally indexed by a semi-group $\mathcal{W}_\mathcal{T}$ on which Braverman, K…
We parametrize the space of double cosets of the group $GL(n,\Bbbk)$ with respect to two subgroups $T_-$, $T_+$ of block strictly triangular matrices. In Addendum, we consider the quasi-regular representation of $GL(n,\Bbb{C})$ in $L^2$ on $T_- \ GL(n,\Bbb{C})$, observe that it admits an additional group of symmetries, find the joint spectrum, and observe that it is multiplicity free.
Let A be a local commutative principal ideal ring. We study the double coset space of GL(n,A) with respect to the subgroup of upper triangular matrices. Geometrically, these cosets describe the relative position of two full flags of free primitive submodules of A^n. If k is the length of the ring, we determine for which of the pairs (n,k) the double coset space depend on the ring in question. For n=3, we give a complete parametrisation of the double coset space and provide estimates on the rate of growth of the number of double cosets.
How far can the elementary description of centralizers of parabolic subalgebras of Hecke algebras of finite real reflection groups be generalized to the complex reflection group case? In this paper we begin to answer this question by establishing results in two directions. First, under conditions closely analogous to those existing for the real case, we give explicit relations between coefficients in an element centralizing a generator. Second, we introduce a tool for dealing with a major challenge of the complex case -- the ``instability'' of certain double cosets -- through the definition an…
We construct a new basis for a slim cyclotomic $q$-Schur algebra $\cysSr$ via symmetric polynomials in Jucys--Murphy operators of the cyclotomic Hecke algebra $\cysHr$. We show that this basis, labelled by matrices, is not the double coset basis when $\cysHr$ is the Hecke algebra of a Coxeter group, but coincides with the double coset basis for the corresponding group algebra, the Hecke algebra at $q=1$. As further applications, we then discuss the cyclotomic Schur--Weyl duality at the integral level. This also includes a category equivalence and a classification of simple objects.
We prove that the combinatorial concept of a special matching can be used to compute the parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of doubly laced Coxeter groups and of dihedral Coxeter groups. In particular, for this class of groups which includes all Weyl groups, our results generalize to the parabolic setting the main results in [Advances in Math. {202} (2006), 555-601]. As a consequence, the parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial indexed by $u$ and $v$ depends only on the poset structure of the Bruhat interval from the identity element to $v$ and on which elements of that interval are minimal co…
Motivated by recent developments on visible actions on complex manifolds, we raise a question whether or not the multiplication of three subgroups $L$, $G'$ and $H$ surjects a Lie group $G$ in the setting that $G/H$ carries a complex structure and contains $G'/G' \cap H$ as a totally real submanifold. Particularly important cases are when $G/L$ and $G/H$ are generalized flag varieties, and we classify pairs of Levi subgroups $(L, H)$ such that $L G' H = G$, or equivalently, the real generalized flag variety $G'/H \cap G'$ meets every $L$-orbit on the complex generalized flag variety $G/H$ in t…
In well-known work, Kazhdan and Lusztig (1979) defined a new set of Hecke algebra basis elements (actually two such sets) associated to elements in any Coxeter group. Often these basis elements are computed by a standard recursive algorithm which, for Coxeter group elements of long length, generally involves computing most basis elements corresponding to Coxeter group elements of smaller length. Thus, many calculations simply compute all basis elements associated to a given length or less, even if the interest is in a specific Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element. Similar remarks apply to "parabolic"…
Let $\mathbb F$ be a finite field. Consider a direct sum $V$ of an infinite number of copies of $\mathbb F$, consider the dual space $V^\diamond$, i.~e., the direct product of an infinite number of copies of $\mathbb F$. Consider the direct sum ${\mathbb V}=V\oplus V^\diamond$. The object of the paper is the group $\mathbf{GL}$ of continuous linear operators in $\mathbb V$. We reduce the theory of unitary representations of $\mathbf{GL}$ to projective representations of a certain category whose morphisms are linear relations in finite-dimensional linear spaces over $\mathbb F$. In fact we cons…
The action of a Coxeter group $W$ on the set of left cosets of a standard parabolic subgroup deforms to define a module $\mathcal{M}^J$ of the group's Iwahori-Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}$ with a particularly simple form. Rains and Vazirani have introduced the notion of a quasiparabolic set to characterize $W$-sets for which analogous deformations exist; a motivating example is the conjugacy class of fixed point free involutions in the symmetric group. Deodhar has shown that the module $\mathcal{M}^J$ possesses a certain antilinear involution, called the bar operator, and a certain basis invaria…
We give a uniform geometric realization for the cluster algebra of an arbitrary finite type with principal coefficients at an arbitrary acyclic seed. This algebra is realized as the coordinate ring of a certain reduced double Bruhat cell in the simply connected semisimple algebraic group of the same Cartan-Killing type. In this realization, the cluster variables appear as certain (generalized) principal minors.
In the spectral theory of non-self-adjoint operators there is a well-known operation of product of operator colligations. Many similar operations appear in the theory of infinite-dimensional groups as multiplications of double cosets. We construct characteristic functions for such double cosets and get semigroups of matrix-valued functions in matrix balls.
For a classical group $G$ and a Coxeter element $c$ of the Weyl group, it is known that the coordinate ring $\mathbb{C}[G^{e,c^2}]$ of the double Bruhat cell $G^{e,c^2}:=B\cap B_-c^2B_-$ has a structure of cluster algebra of finite type, where $B$ and $B_-$ are opposite Borel subgroups. In this article, we consider the case $G$ is of type ${\rm B}_r$, ${\rm C}_r$ or ${\rm D}_r$ and describe all the cluster variables in $\mathbb{C}[G^{e,c^2}]$ as monomial realizations of certain Demazure crystals.
Let $G$ be a simply connected simple algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$, $B$ and $B_-$ be its two opposite Borel subgroups. For two elements $u$, $v$ of the Weyl group $W$, it is known that the coordinate ring ${\mathbb C}[G^{u,v}]$ of the double Bruhat cell $G^{u,v}=BuB\cap B_-vB_-$ is isomorphic to a cluster algebra $\mathcal{A}(\textbf{i})_{\mathbb C}$ [arXiv:math/0305434, arXiv:1602.00498]. In the case $u=e$, $v=c^2$ ($c$ is a Coxeter element), the algebra ${\mathbb C}[G^{e,c^2}]$ has only finitely many cluster variables. In this article, for $G={\rm SL}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$, we obtain explic…
We study the subregular $J$-ring $J_C$ of a Coxeter system $(W,S)$, a subring of Lusztig's $J$-ring. We prove that $J_C$ is isomorphic to a quotient of the path algebra of the double quiver of $(W,S)$ by a suitable ideal that we associate to a family of Chebyshev polynomials. As applications, we use quiver representations to study the category mod-$A_K$ of finite dimensional right modules of the algebra $A_K=K\otimes_\Z J_C$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic zero. Our results include classifications of Coxeter systems for which mod-$A_K$ is semisimple, has finitely many …
The most general construction of double affine Artin groups (DAAG) and Hecke algebras (DAHA) associates such objects to pairs of compatible reductive group data. We show that DAAG/DAHA always admit a faithful action by automorphisms of a finite index subgroup of the Artin group of type $A_{2}$, which descends to a faithful outer action of a congruence subgroup of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ or $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. This was previously known only in some special cases and, to the best of our knowledge, not even conjectured to hold in full generality. The structural intricacies of DAAG/DAHA are captured b…
The spherical functions of the noncompact Grassmann manifolds over the real or complex numbers or the quaternions with rank q and dimension parameter p can be seen as Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric functions of type BC, when the double coset space is identified with some Weyl chamber of type B. The associated double coset hypergroups may be embedded into a continuous family of commutative hypergroups with these hypergeometric functions as multiplicative functions with p in some continuous parameter range by a result of Rösler. Several limit theorems for random walks associated with these hypergr…
We construct a family of integrable Hamiltonian systems generalizing the relativistic periodic Toda lattice, which is recovered as a special case. The phase spaces of these systems are double Bruhat cells corresponding to pairs of Coxeter elements in the affine Weyl group. In the process we extend various results on double Bruhat cells in simple algebraic groups to the setting of Kac-Moody groups. We also generalize some fundamental results in Poisson-Lie theory to the setting of ind-algebraic groups, which is of interest beyond our immediate applications to integrable systems.
