The notion of a reduced expression for a double coset in a Coxeter group was introduced by Williamson, and recent work of Elias and Ko has made this theory more accessible and combinatorial. One result of Elias-Ko is that any coset admits a reduced expression which factors through a reduced expression for a related coset called its core. In this paper we define a class of cosets called atomic cosets, and prove that every core coset admits a reduced expression as a composition of atomic cosets. This leads to an algorithmic construction of a reduced expression for any coset. In types $A$ and $B$ we prove that the combinatorics of compositions of atomic cosets matches the combinatorics of ordinary expressions in a smaller group. In other types the combinatorics is new, as explored in a sequel by Ko.
Billey, Konvalinka, Petersen, Solfstra, and Tenner recently presented a method for counting parabolic double cosets in Coxeter groups, and used it to compute $p_n$, the number of parabolic double cosets in $S_n$, for $n\leq13$. In this paper, we derive a new formula for $p_n$ and an efficient polynomial time algorithm for evaluating this formula. We use these results to compute $p_n$ for $n\leq5000$ and to prove an asymptotic formula for $p_n$ that was conjectured by Billey et al.
We develop combinatorics of parabolic double cosets in finite Coxeter groups as a follow-up of recent articles by Billey-Konvalinka-Petersen-Slofstra-Tenner and Petersen. (1) We construct a double coset system as a generalization of a two-sided analogue of a Coxeter complex and present its order structure with its local dimension function on certain connected components. As applications of double cosets to Bruhat graphs, we also prove: (2) every parabolic double coset is regular, (3) invariance of degree on Bruhat graph on lower intervals as an analogy of the one for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial…
Parabolic subgroups $W_I$ of Coxeter systems $(W,S)$, as well as their ordinary and double quotients $W / W_I$ and $W_I \backslash W / W_J$, appear in many contexts in combinatorics and Lie theory, including the geometry and topology of generalized flag varieties and the symmetry groups of regular polytopes. The set of ordinary cosets $w W_I$, for $I \subseteq S$, forms the Coxeter complex of $W$, and is well-studied. In this article we look at a less studied object: the set of all double cosets $W_I w W_J$ for $I, J \subseteq S$. Double coset are not uniquely presented by triples $(I,w,J)$. W…
Let $H$ and $K$ be subgroups of a finite group $G$. Pick $g \in G$ uniformly at random. We study the distribution induced on double cosets. Three examples are treated in detail: 1) $H = K = $ the Borel subgroup in $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$. This leads to new theorems for Mallows measure on permutations and new insights into the LU matrix factorization. 2) The double cosets of the hyperoctahedral group inside $S_{2n}$, which leads to new applications of the Ewens's sampling formula of mathematical genetics. 3) Finally, if $H$ and $K$ are parabolic subgroups of $S_n$, the double cosets are `contingen…
We consider the Newton stratification on Iwahori double cosets in the loop group of a reductive group. We describe a group-theoretic condition on the generic Newton point, called cordiality, under which the Newton poset (i.e. the index set for non-empty Newton strata) is saturated and Grothendieck's conjecture on closures of the Newton strata holds. Finally, we give several large classes of Iwahori double cosets for which this condition is satisfied by studying certain paths in the associated quantum Bruhat graph.
We write explicit contour integral formulas for probability distributions of the multi-species q-TAZRP and the multi-species ASEP starting with q-exchangeable initial conditions. The formulas are equal to the corresponding explicit contour integral formulas for the single-species q-TAZRP ([Korhonen-Lee 2014, Wang-Waugh 2016]) and ASEP [Tracy-Widom 2007], with a factor in front of the integral. For the multi-species q-TAZRP, we use a decomposition theorem for elements of double cosets of parabolic subgroups in a Coxeter group. The set of distinguished double coset representatives with minimal l…
Following Babai's algorithm for the string isomorphism problem, we determine that it is possible to write expressions of short length describing certain permutation cosets, including all permutation subgroups; this is feasible both in the original version of the algorithm and in its CFSG-free version, partially done by Babai and completed by Pyber. The existence of such descriptions gives a weak form of the Cameron-Maróti classification even without assuming CFSG. We also thoroughly explicate Babai's recursion process (as given in Helfgott) and obtain explicit constants for the runtime of the …
We enlarge a Coxeter group into a category, with one object for each finite parabolic subgroup, encoding the combinatorics of double cosets. This category, the singular Coxeter monoid, is connected to the geometry of partial flag varieties. Our main result is a presentation of this category by generators and relations. We also provide a new description of reduced expressions for double cosets. We describe all the braid relations between such reduced expressions, and prove an analogue of Matsumoto's theorem. This gives a proper development of ideas first introduced by Geordie Williamson. In typ…
We find a closed-form solution to the recurrence $\ z_{n+2} = \frac{1}{z_{n+1}} + z_n$, where $n \in \mathbb Z_{\geq 1}$ and $z_1 \in \mathbb R_{> 0},\ z_2 \in \mathbb R_{> 0}$. As a corollary, we derive an alternate proof of a recurrence for an expression involving double factorials which first appeared in the 2004 Putnam Contest. We subsequently pose several open questions suitable for motivated undergraduate students.
