On double cosets of groups $GL(n)$ with respect to subgroups of block strictly triangular matrices

A note on Bruhat decomposition of GL(n) over local principal ideal rings

Let A be a local commutative principal ideal ring. We study the double coset space of GL(n,A) with respect to the subgroup of upper triangular matrices. Geometrically, these cosets describe the relative position of two full flags of free primitive submodules of A^n. If k is the length of the ring, we determine for which of the pairs (n,k) the double coset space depend on the ring in question. For n=3, we give a complete parametrisation of the double coset space and provide estimates on the rate of growth of the number of double cosets.

We study in this paper the validity of the mean ergodic theorem along \emph{left} Følner sequences in a countable amenable group $G$. Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field. Let $B$ be the Borel subgroup of $\mGL_n(k)$ consisting of nonsingular upper triangular matrices. The cogrowth of a subgroup is defined as the growth of a set of coset representatives which are of minimal length. A subgroup is essential if it intersects non-trivially every non-trivial subgroup. In this paper, we consider a natural generalization of the concept of order of an element in a group: an element $g \in G$ is said to have order $k$ in a subgroup $H$ of $G$ (\resp \wrt a coset $Hu$) if $k$ is the first strictly positive integer such that $g^k \in H$ (\resp $g^k \in Hu$).
