We prove that stable ergodicity is C r open and dense among conservative partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional center bundle, for all r in [2,infty]. The proof follows Pugh-Shub program: among conservative partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional center bundle, accessibility is C r open and dense, and essential accessibility implies ergodicity.
In this paper we obtain two criteria of stable ergodicity outside the partially hyperbolic scenario. In both criteria, we use a weak form of hyperbolicity called chain-hyperbolicity. It is obtained one criterion for diffeomorphisms with dominated splitting and one criterion for weakly partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. As an application of one of these criteria, we obtain the $C^1$-density of stable ergodicity inside a certain class of weakly partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.
In this work we exhibit a new criteria for ergodicity of diffeomorphisms involving conditions on Lyapunov exponents and general position of some invariant manifolds. On one hand we derive uniqueness of SRB-measures for transitive surface diffeomorphisms. On the other hand, using recent results on the existence of blenders we give a positive answer, in the $C^1$ topology, to a conjecture of Pugh-Shub in the context of partially hyperbolic conservative diffeomorphisms with two dimensional center bundle.
We show that for any integer $r \geq 2$, stable accessibility is $C^r$-dense among partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with two-dimensional center that satisfy some strong bunching and are stably dynamically coherent.
We consider classes of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism $f:M\to M$ with splitting $TM=E^s\oplus E^c\oplus E^u$ and $\dim E^c=2$. These classes include for instance (perturbations of) the product of Anosov and conservative surface diffeomorphisms, skew products of surface diffeomorphisms over Anosov, partially hyperbolic symplectomorphisms on manifolds of dimension four with bidimensional center foliation whose center leaves are all compact. We prove that accessibility holds in these classes for $C^1$ open and $C^r$ dense subsets and moreover they are stably ergodic.
If a non-ergodic, partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism on the 3-torus is homotopic to an Anosov diffeomorphism $A$, it is topologically conjugate to $A$.
In [15] the authors proved the Pugh-Shub conjecture for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with 1-dimensional center, i.e. stable ergodic diffeomorphism are dense among the partially hyperbolic ones. In this work we address the issue of giving a more accurate description of this abundance of ergodicity. In particular, we give the first examples of manifolds in which all conservative partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms are ergodic.
The center bundle of a conservative partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism $f$ is called robustly non-hyperbolic if any conservative diffeomorphism which is $C^1$-close to $f$ has non-hyperbolic center bundle. In this paper, we prove that stable ergodicity is $C^1$-dense among conservative partially hyperbolic systems with robust non-hyperbolic center.
We show stable ergodicity of a class of conservative diffeomorphisms which do not have any hyperbolic invariant subbundle. Moreover the uniqueness of SRB measures for non-conservative $C^1$ perturbations of such diffeomorphisms. This class contains strictly non-partially hyperbolic robustly transitive diffeomorphisms by Bonatti-Viana and so we answer their question about the stable ergodicity of such systems.
We show that a class of robustly transitive diffeomorphisms originally described by Mañé are intrinsically ergodic. More precisely we obtain an open set of diffeomorphisms which fail to be uniformly hyperbolic, but nevertheless have constant entropy and isomorphic unique measures of maximal entropy.
In this work we obtain a new criterion to establish ergodicity and non-uniform hyperbolicity of smooth measures of diffeomorphisms. This method allows us to give a more accurate description of certain ergodic components. The use of this criterion in combination with topological devices such as blenders lets us obtain global ergodicity and abundance of non-zero Lyapunov exponents in some contexts. In the partial hyperbolicity context, we obtain that stably ergodic diffeomorphisms are C^1-dense among volume preserving partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with two-dimensional center bundle. This …
We study the ergodicity of non-autonomous discrete dynamical systems with non-uniform expansion. As an application we get that any uniformly expanding finitely generated semigroup action of $C^{1+α}$ local diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold is ergodic with respect to the Lebesgue measure. Moreover, we will also prove that every exact non-uniform expandable finitely generated semigroup action of conformal $C^{1+α}$ local diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold is Lebesgue ergodic.
In this work we deal with partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms whose central direction is two dimensional. We prove that in general the accessibility classes are immersed manifolds. If, furthermore, the diffeomorphism is dynamically coherent and satisfies certain bunching condition, then the accessibility classes are $C^{1}$ immersed manifolds.
We consider a class of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms introduced in [BFP] which is open and closed and contains all known examples. If in addition the diffeomorphism is non-wandering, then we show it is accessible unless it contains a su-torus. This implies that these systems are ergodic when they preserve volume, confirming a conjecture by Hertz-Hertz-Ures for this class of systems.
We study conservative partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms in hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We show that they are always accessible and deduce as a result that every conservative $C^{1+}$ partially hyperbolic in a hyperbolic 3-manifold must be ergodic, giving an afirmative answer to a conjecture of Hertz-Hertz-Ures in the context of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Some of the intermediary steps are also done for general partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms homotopic to the identity.
Pugh and Shub have conjectured that essential accessibility implies ergodicity, for a $C^2$, partially hyperbolic, volume-preserving diffeomorphism. We prove this conjecture under a mild center bunching assumption, which is satsified by all partially hyperbolic systems with 1-dimensional center bundle. We also obtain ergodicity results for $C^{1+γ}$ partially hyperbolic systems.
We show that certain types of the three-legged accessibility property of a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism imply the existence of a unique minimal set for one strong foliation and the transitivity of the other one. In case the center dimension is one, we also give a criteria to obtain three-legged accessibility in a robust way. We show some applications of our results to the time-one map of Anosov flows, skew products and certain Anosov diffeomorphisms with partially hyperbolic splitting.
We prove the stable ergodicity of an example of a volume-preserving, partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism introduced by Pierre Berger and Pablo Carrasco. This example is robustly non-uniformly hyperbolic, with two dimensional center, almost every point has both positive and negative Lyapunov exponents along the center direction and does not admit a dominated splitting of the center direction. The main novelty of our proof is that we do not use accessibility.
We prove that every expanding minimal semigroup action of $C^1$ diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold (resp. $C^{1+α}$ conformal) is robustly minimal (resp. ergodic with respect to Lebesgue measure). We also show how, locally, a blending region yields the robustness of the minimality and implies ergodicity.
We prove results related to robust transitivity and density of periodic points of Partially Hyperbolic Diffeomorphisms under conditions involving Accessibility and a property in the tangent bundle .
We show that partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms of $d$-dimensional tori isotopic to an Anosov diffeomorphism, where the isotopy is contained in the set of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, are dynamically coherent. Moreover, we show a \textit{global stability result}, i.e. every partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism as above is \textit{leaf-conjugate} to the linear one. As a consequence, we obtain intrinsic ergodicity and measure equivalence for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional center direction that are isotopic to Anosov diffeomorphisms through such a path.
In this work we completely classify $C^\infty$ conjugacy for conservative partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms homotopic to a linear Anosov automorphism on the 3-torus by its center foliation behavior. We prove that the uniform version of absolute continuity for the center foliation is the natural hypothesis to obtain $C^\infty$ conjugacy to its linear Anosov automorphism. On a recent work Avila, Viana and Wilkinson proved that for a perturbation in the volume preserving case of the time-one map of an Anosov flow absolute continuity of the center foliation implies smooth rigidity. The absolute…
We introduce the notion of nonuniform center bunching for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphims, and extend previous results by Burns--Wilkinson and Avila--Santamaria--Viana. Combining this new technique with other constructions, we prove that $C^1$-generic partially hyperbolic symplectomorphisms are ergodic. We also construct new examples of stably ergodic partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.
If a $C^{1 + a}$, $a >0$, volume-preserving diffeomorphism on a compact manifold has a hyperbolic invariant set with positive volume, then the map is Anosov. We also give a direct proof of ergodicity of volume-preserving $CC^{1+a}$, $a>0$, Anosov diffeomorphism without the usual Hopf argument.
We prove a $C^1$ version of a conjecture by Pugh and Shub: among partially hyperbolic volume-preserving $C^r$ diffeomorphisms, $r>1$, the stably ergodic ones are $C^1$-dense. To establish these results, we develop new perturbation tools for the $C^1$ topology: linearization of horseshoes while preserving entropy, and creation of "superblenders" from hyperbolic sets with large entropy.
Under a suitable bunching condition, we establish that stable holonomies inside center-stable manifolds for $C^{1+β}$ diffeomorphisms are uniformly bi-Lipschitz and in fact $C^{1+\text{Hölder}}$. This verifies that the Pugh-Shub theory for ergodicity holds for suitably center-bunched, $C^{1+β}$, essentially accessible, partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism and verifies that the Ledrappier-Young entropy formulas hold for $C^{1+β}$ diffeomorphisms of compact manifolds.
In this work we obtain some metric and ergodic properties of $C^{1+}$ partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional topological neutral center, mainly regarding the behavior of its center foliation. Based on a trichotomy for the center conditional measures of any invariant ergodic measure, we show that if these conditionals have full support, then the center foliation is leafwise absolutely continuous, the diffeomorphism is Bernoulli in the $C^{1+}$ case, and an invariance principle occurs in the sense that M may be covered by a finite number of open sets where the system of center…
We prove that for $r \in \mathbb{N}_{\geq 2} \cup \{\infty\}$, for any dynamically coherent, center bunched and strongly pinched volume preserving $C^r$ partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism $f \colon X \to X$, if either (1) its center foliation is uniformly compact, or (2) its center-stable and center-unstable foliations are of class $C^1$, then there exists a $C^1$-open neighbourhood of $f$ in ${\rm Diff}^r(X,\mathrm{Vol})$, in which stable ergodicity is $C^r$-prevalent in Kolmogorov's sense. In particular, we verify Pugh-Shub's stable ergodicity conjecture in this region. This also provides t…
We discuss recent progress in understanding the dynamical properties of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms that preserve volume. The main topics addressed are density of stable ergodicity and stable accessibility, center Lyapunov exponents, pathological foliations, rigidity, and the surprising interrelationships between these notions.
We show that the time-1 map of an Anosov flow, whose strong-unstable foliation is $C^2$ smooth and minimal, is $C^2$ close to a diffeomorphism having positive central Lyapunov exponent Lebesgue almost everywhere and a unique physical measure with full basin, which is $C^r$ stably ergodic. Our method is perturbative and does not rely on preservation of a smooth measure.
Some of the guiding problems in partially hyperbolic systems are the following: (1) Examples, (2) Properties of invariant foliations, (3) Accessibility, (4) Ergodicity, (5) Lyapunov exponents, (6) Integrability of central foliations, (7) Transitivity and (8) Classification. Here we will survey the state of the art on these subjects, and propose related problems.
Let $M$ be an $m$-dimensional differentiable manifold with a nontrivial circle action ${\mathcal S}= {\lbrace S_t \rbrace}_{t \in\RR}, S_{t+1}=S_t$, preserving a smooth volume $μ$. For any Liouville number $\a$ we construct a sequence of area-preserving diffeomorphisms $H_n$ such that the sequence $H_n\circ S_\a\circ H_n^{-1}$ converges to a smooth weak mixing diffeomorphism of $M$. The method is a quantitative version of the approximation by conjugations construction introduced in \cite{AK}. For $m=2$ and $M$ equal to the unit disc $\DD^2=\{x^2+y^2\leq 1\}$ or the closed annulus $\AAA=\TT\tim…
This paper gives a complete classification of the possible ergodic decompositions for certain open families of volume-preserving partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. These families include systems with compact center leaves and perturbations of Anosov flows under conditions on the dimensions of the invariant subbundles. The paper further shows that the non-open accessibility classes form a $C^1$ lamination and gives results about the accessibility classes of non-volume-preserving systems. Note: this document has been modified slightly from earlier preprints. The numbering of sections was chan…
We obtain a dichotomy for $C^1$-generic symplectomorphisms: either all the Lyapunov exponents of almost every point vanish, or the map is partially hyperbolic and ergodic with respect to volume. This completes a program first put forth by Ricardo Mañé. A main ingredient in our proof is a generalization to partially hyperbolic invariant sets of the main result in [Dolgopyat-Wilkinson] that stable accessibility is $C^1$ dense among partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.
In this paper, we investigate the ergodic and rigidity properties of weakly hyperbolic group actions. Motivated by classical theorems describing Anosov diffeomorphisms, we obtain two main results: First, all C^2 volume preserving weakly hyperbolic actions on closed manifolds are ergodic. This result generalizes Anosov's classical theorem on ergodicity of Anosov diffeomorphisms to the wider class of weakly hyperbolic group actions. To state the second main result, suppose that A denotes a weakly hyperbolic action of a higher rank lattice (such as SL(n,Z) for n>2) by C^2 volume preserving diffeo…
