Let $M$ be an $m$-dimensional differentiable manifold with a nontrivial circle action ${\mathcal S}= {\lbrace S_t \rbrace}_{t \in\RR}, S_{t+1}=S_t$, preserving a smooth volume $μ$. For any Liouville number $\a$ we construct a sequence of area-preserving diffeomorphisms $H_n$ such that the sequence $H_n\circ S_\a\circ H_n^{-1}$ converges to a smooth weak mixing diffeomorphism of $M$. The method is a quantitative version of the approximation by conjugations construction introduced in \cite{AK}.
For $m=2$ and $M$ equal to the unit disc $\DD^2=\{x^2+y^2\leq 1\}$ or the closed annulus $\AAA=\TT\times [0,1]$ this result proves the following dichotomy: $\a \in \RR \setminus\QQ$ is Diophantine if and only if there is no ergodic diffeomorphism of $M$ whose rotation number on the boundary equals $α$ (on at least one of the boundaries in the case of $\AAA$). One part of the dichotomy follows from our constructions, the other is an unpublished result of Michael Herman asserting that if $\a$ is Diophantine, then any area preserving diffeomorphism with rotation number $\a$ on the boundary (on at least one of the boundaries in the case of $\AAA$) displays smooth invariant curves arbitrarily close to the boundary which clearly precludes ergodicity or even topological transitivity.
We study the group of C^{r}-diffeomorphisms of the closed annulus that are isotopic to the identity. We show that, for r different from 3, the linear space of homogeneous quasi-morphisms on this group is one dimensional. Therefore, the commutator length on this group is (stably) unbounded. In particular, this provides an example of a manifold whose diffeomorphisms group is unbounded in the sense of Burago, Ivanov and Polterovich.
An area-preserving diffeomorphism of an annulus has an "action function" which measures how the diffeomorphism distorts curves. The average value of the action function over the annulus is known as the Calabi invariant of the diffeomorphism, while the average value of the action function over a periodic orbit of the diffeomorphism is the mean action of the orbit. If an area-preserving annulus diffeomorphism is a rotation near the boundary of the annulus, and if its Calabi invariant is less than the maximum boundary value of the action function, then we show that the infimum of the mean action …
Given any Liouville number $α$, it is shown that various subspaces are $C^\infty$-dense in the space of the orientation preserving $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms of the circle with rotation number $α$.
This paper is concerned about the orbit equivalence types of $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms of $S^1$ seen as nonsingular automorphisms of $(S^1,m)$, where $m$ is the Lebesgue measure. Given any Liouville number $α$, it is shown that each of the subspace formed by type ${\rm II}_1$, ${\rm II}_\infty$, ${\rm III}_λ$ ($λ>1$), ${\rm III}_\infty$ and ${\rm III}_0$ diffeomorphisms are $C^\infty$-dense in the space of the orientation preserving $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms with rotation number $α$.
We show that on any smooth compact connected manifold of dimension $m\geq 2$ admitting a smooth non-trivial circle action $\mathcal{S} = \left\{S_t\right\}_{t \in \mathbb{R}}$, $S_{t+1}=S_t$, the set of weakly mixing $C^{\infty}$-diffeomorphisms which preserve both a smooth volume $ν$ and a measurable Riemannian metric is dense in $\mathcal{A}_α \left(M\right)= \overline{ \left\{h \circ S_α \circ h^{-1} : h \in \text{Diff}^{\infty}\left(M, ν\right) \right\}}^{C^{\infty}}$ for every Liouvillean number $α$. The proof is based on a quantitative version of the Anosov-Katok-method with explicitly c…
We consider pointwise, box, and Hausdorff dimensions of invariant measures for circle diffeomorphisms. We discuss the cases of rational, Diophantine, and Liouville rotation numbers. Our main result is that for any Liouville number $τ$ there exists a $C^\infty$ circle diffeomorphism with rotation number $τ$ such that the pointwise and box dimensions of its unique invariant measure do not exist. Moreover, the lower pointwise and lower box dimensions can equal any value $0\le β\le 1$.
Consider a homeomorphism h of the closed annulus S^1*[0,1], isotopic to the identity, such that the rotation set of h is reduced to a single irrational number alpha (we say that h is an irrational pseudo-rotation). For every positive integer n, we prove that there exists a simple arc gamma joining one of the boundary component of the annulus to the other one, such that gamma is disjoint from its n first iterates under h. As a corollary, we obtain that the rigid rotation of angle alpha can be approximated by homeomorphisms conjugate to h. The first result stated above is an analog of a theorem …
We consider holomorphic maps defined in an annulus around $\mathbb R/\mathbb Z$ in $\mathbb C/\mathbb Z$. E. Risler proved that in a generic analytic family of such maps $f_ζ$ that contains a Brjuno rotation $f_0(z)=z+α$, all maps that are conjugate to this rotation form a codimension-1 analytic submanifold near $f_0$. In this paper, we obtain the Risler's result as a corollary of the following construction. We introduce a renormalization operator on the space of univalent maps in a neighborhood of $\mathbb R/\mathbb Z$. We prove that this operator is hyperbolic, with one unstable direction co…
We consider the classical problem of area-preserving maps on annulus $\mathbb{A} = S^1 \times [0, 1]$ . Let $\mathcal{M}_f$ be the set of all invariant probability measures of an area-preserving, orientation preserving diffeomorphism $f$ on $\mathbb{A}$. Given any $μ_1$ and $μ_2$ in $\mathcal{M}_f$, Franks \cite{Franks1988}\cite{Franks1992}, generalizing Poincaré's last geometric theorem (Birkhoff \cite{Birkhoff1913}), showed that if their rotation numbers are different, then $f$ has infinitely many periodic orbits. In this paper, we show that if $μ_1$ and $μ_2$ have different actions, even if…
Given any Liouville number $α$, it is shown that the nullity of the Hausdorff dimension of the invariant measure is generic in the space of the orientation preserving $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms of the circle with rotation number $α$.
We augment the method of $C^\infty$ conjugation approximation with explicit estimates on the conjugacy map. This allows us to construct ergodic volume preserving diffeomorphisms measure-theoretically isomorphic to any apriori given Liouville rotation on a variety of manifolds. In the special case of tori the maps can be made uniquely ergodic.
Translation and rotation numbers have played an interesting and important role in the qualitative description of various dynamical systems. In this exposition we are especially interested in applications which lead to proofs of periodic motions in various kinds of dynamics on the annulus. The applications include billiards and geodesic flows. Going beyond this simple qualitative invariant in the study of the dynamics of area preserving annulus maps, G.D. Birkhoff was led to the concept of ``regions of instability'' for twist maps. We discuss the closely related notion of instability sets for a…
This paper studies homeomorphisms of the closed annulus that are isotopic to the identity from the viewpoint of rotation theory, using a newly developed forcing theory for surface homeomorphisms. Our first result is a solution to the so called strong form of Boyland's Conjecture on the closed annulus: Assume $f$ is a homeomorphism of $\overline{\mathbb{A}}:=(\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z})\times [0,1]$ which is isotopic to the identity and preserves a Borel probability measure $μ$ with full support. We prove that if the rotation set of $f$ is a non-trivial segment, then the rotation number of the measu…
We define the prequantization of a symplectic Anosov diffeomorphism f:M-> M, which is a U(1) extension of the diffeomorphism f preserving an associated specific connection, and study the spectral properties of the associated transfer operator, called prequantum transfer operator. This is a model for the transfer operators associated to geodesic flows on negatively curved manifolds (or contact Anosov flows). We restrict the prequantum transfer operator to the N-th Fourier mode with respect to the U(1) action and investigate the spectral property in the limit N->infinity, regarding the transfer …
We introduce a notion of weak Denjoy subsystem (WDS) that generalizes the Aubry-Mather Cantor sets to diffeomorphisms of manifolds. We explain how a rotation number can be associated to such a WDS. Then we build in any horseshoe a continuous one parameter family of such WDS that is indexed by its rotation number. Looking at the inverse problem in the setting of Aubry-Mather theory, we also prove that for a generic conservative twist map of the annulus, the majority of the Aubry-Mather sets are contained in some horseshoe that is associated to a Aubry-Mather set with a rational rotation number.
The key result of this article is key lemma: if a Jordan curve $γ$ is invariant by a given C 1+$α$ -diffeomorphism f of a surface and if $γ$ carries an ergodic hyperbolic probability $μ$, then $μ$ is supported on a periodic orbit. From this Lemma we deduce three new results for the C 1+$α$ symplectic twist maps f of the annulus: 1. if $γ$ is a loop at the boundary of an instability zone such that f |$γ$ has an irrational rotation number, then the convergence of any orbit to $γ$ is slower than exponential; 2. if $μ$ is an invariant probability that is supported in an invariant curve $γ$ with an…
Let $α$ be an irrational number and $I$ an interval of $\mathbb{R}$. If $α$ is Diophantine, we show that any one-parameter group of homeomorphisms of $I$ whose time-$1$ and $α$ maps are $C^\infty$ is in fact the flow of a $C^\infty$ vector field. If $α$ is Liouville on the other hand, we construct a one-parameter group of homeomorphisms of $I$ whose time-$1$ and $α$ maps are $C^\infty$ but which is not the flow of a $C^2$ vector field (though, if $I$ has boundary, we explain that the hypotheses force it to be the flow of a $C^1$ vector field). We extend both results to families of irrational n…
