Engel subalgebras of finite-dimensional n-Lie algebras are shown to have similar properties to those of Lie algebras. Using these, it is shown that an n-Lie algebra, all of whose maximal subalgebras are ideals, is nilpotent. A primitive 2-soluble n-Lie algebra is shown to split over its minimal ideal and that all the complements to its minimal ideal are conjugate. A subalgebra is shown to be a Cartan subalgebra if and only if it is minimal Engel, provided that the field has sufficiently many elements. Cartan subalgebras are shown to have a property analogous to intravariance.
Engel subalgebras of finite-dimensional Leibniz algebras are shown to have similar properties to those of Lie algebras. Using these, it is shown that a left Leibniz algebra, all of whose maximal subalgebras are right ideals, is nilpotent. A primitive Leibniz algebra is shown to split over its minimal ideal and that all the complements to its minimal ideal are conjugate. A subalgebra is shown to be a Cartan subalgebra if and only if it is minimal Engel, provided that the field has sufficiently many elements. Cartan subalgebras are shown to have a property analogous to intravariance.
Relationships between certain properties of maximal subalgebras of a Lie algebra $L$ and the structure of $L$ itself have been studied by a number of authors. Amongst the maximal subalgebras, however, some exert a greater influence on particular results than others. Here we study properties of those maximal subalgebras that contain Engel subalgebras, and of those that also have codimension greater than one in $L$.
Let L be a Lie superalgebra over a fled of characteristic p\neq 2 with enveloping algebra U(L) or let L be a restricted Lie superalgebra over a field of characteristic p > 2 with restricted enveloping algebra u(L). In this note, we establish when u(L) or U(L) is bounded Lie Engel.
In a recent study of Engel Lie rings, Serena Cicalo` and Willem de Graaf have given a practical set of conditions for an additively finitely generated Lie ring L to satisfy an Engel condition. We present a simpler and more direct proof of this fact. Then we generalize it to a result in the language of tensor algebra, which can be applied to other contexts.
Let R be an associative ring with unity and let [R] and U(R) denote the associated Lie ring (with [a,b]=ab-ba) and the group of units of R, respectively. In 1983 Gupta and Levin proved that if [R] is a nilpotent Lie ring of class c then U(R) is a nilpotent group of class at most c. The aim of the present note is to show that, in general, a similar statement does not hold if [R] is n-Engel. We construct an algebra R over a field of characteristic different from 2 and 3 such that the Lie algebra [R] is 5-Engel but U(R) is not a 5-Engel group.
A classical theorem of R. Baer describes the nilpotent radical of a finite group G as the set of all Engel elements, i.e. elements y in G such that for any x in G the n-th commutator [x,y,...,y] equals 1 for n big enough. We obtain a characterization of the solvable radical of a finite dimensional Lie algebra defined over a field of characteristic zero in similar terms. We suggest a conjectural description of the solvable radical of a finite group as the set of Engel-like elements and reduce this conjecture to the case of a finite simple group.
The connections between the properties of associative rings that are Lie-solvable (Engel, n-Engel, locally finite, respectively) and the properties of their adjoin subgroups are investigated.
The semisimple subalgebras of the rank $2$ symplectic Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sp}(4,\mathbb{C})$ are well-known, and we recently classified its Levi decomposable subalgebras. In this article, we classify the solvable subalgebras of $\mathfrak{sp}(4,\mathbb{C})$, up to inner automorphism. This completes the classification of the subalgebras of $\mathfrak{sp}(4,\mathbb{C})$. More broadly speaking, in completing the classification of the subalgebras of $\mathfrak{sp}(4,\mathbb{C})$ we have completed the classification of the subalgebras of the rank $2$ semisimple Lie algebras.
A complex fuzzy Lie algebra is a fuzzy Lie algebra whose membership function takes values in the unit circle in the complex plane. In this paper, we deine the complex fuzzy Lie subalgebras and complex fuzzy ideals of Lie algebras. Then, we investigate some of characteristics of complex fuzzy Lie subalgebras. The relationship between complex fuzzy Lie subalgebras and fuzzy Lie subalgebras is also investigated. Finally, we define the image and the inverse image of complex fuzzy Lie subalgebra under Lie algebra homomorphism. The properties of complex fuzzy Lie subalgebras and complex fuzzy ideals…
Algorithms are described that help with obtaining a classification of the semisimple subalgebras of a given semisimple Lie algebra, up to linear equivalence. The algorithms have been used to obtain classifications of the semisimple subalgebras of the simple Lie algebras of ranks <= 8. These have been made available as a database inside the SLA package of GAP4. The subalgebras in this database are explicitly given, as well as the inclusion relations among them.
Let $\mf{g}$ be any finite-dimensional Lie algebra with Killling form $B$. Let $\mf{h}$ be a subalgebra of $\mf{g}$ on which the Killing form is non degenerate. Then $\mf{h}$ is reductive.
The maximal graded subalgebras for four families of Lie superalgebras of Cartan type over a field of prime characteristic are studied. All maximal reducible graded subalgebras are described completely and their isomorphism classes, dimension formulas are found. The classification of maximal irreducible graded subalgebras is reduced to the classification of the maximal irreducible subalgebras for the classical Lie superalgebras $\frak{gl}(m,n)$, $\frak{sl}(m,n)$ and $\frak{osp}(m,n)$.
The purpose of this paper is to determine all maximal graded subalgebras of the four infinite series of finite-dimensional graded Lie superalgebras of odd Cartan type over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>3$. All maximal graded subalgebras consist of three types (\MyRoman{1}), (\MyRoman{2}) and (\MyRoman{3}). Maximal graded subalgebras of type (\MyRoman{3}) fall into reducible maximal graded subalgebras and irreducible maximal graded subalgebras. In this paper we classify maximal graded subalgebras of types (\MyRoman{1}), (\MyRoman{2}) and reducible maximal g raded subalgebra…
Important subalgebras of a Lie algebra of an algebraic group are its toral subalgebras, or equivalently (over fields of characteristic 0) its Cartan subalgebras. Of great importance among these are ones that are split: their action on the Lie algebra splits completely over the field of definition. While algorithms to compute split maximal toral subalgebras exist and have been implemented [Ryb07, CM09], these algorithms fail when the Lie algebra is defined over a field of characteristic 2 or 3. We present heuristic algorithms that, given a reductive Lie algebra L over a finite field of characte…
By considering the nilpotent Lie algebra with the derived subalgebra of dimension $ 2$, we compute some functors include the Schur multiplier, the exterior square and the tensor square of these Lie algebras. We also give the corank of such Lie algebras.
In this paper, the structure of all finite-dimensional nilpotent Lie algebras of class two with derived subalgebra of dimension two over an arbitrary field $ \mathbb{F} $ is determined. Furthermore, we give the structure of the Schur multiplier of such Lie algebras.
We consider the problem of constructing semisimple subalgebras of real (semi-) simple Lie algebras. We develop computational methods that help to deal with this problem. Our methods boil down to solving a set of polynomial equations. In many cases the equations turn out to be sufficiently "pleasant" to be able to solve them. In particular this is the case for S-subalgebras.
A subalgebra $B$ of a Lie algebra $L$ is {\em c-supplemented} in $L$ if there is a subalgebra $C$ of $L$ with $L = B + C$ and $B \cap C \leq B_L$, where $B_L$ is the core of $B$ in $L$. This is analogous to the corresponding concept of a c-supplemented subgroup in a finite group. We say that $L$ is {\em c-supplemented} if every subalgebra of $L$ is c-supplemented in $L$. We give here a complete characterisation of c-supplemented Lie algebras over a general field.
We investigate subalgebras in free Lie algebras, the main tool being relative growth and cogrowth functions. Our study reveals drastic differences in the behavior of proper finitely generated subalgebras and nonzero subideals. For instance, the \textit{growth} of a proper finitely generated subalgebra $H$ of a free Lie algebra $L$, with respect to any fixed free basis $X$, is exponentially small compared to the growth of the whole of $L$. Quite opposite, the \textit{cogrowth} of any nonzero subideal $S$ is exponentially small compared to the growth of $L$.
Let L be a restricted Lie algebra over a field of characteristic p > 2 and denote by u(L) its restricted enveloping algebra. We determine the conditions under which the set of symmetric elements of u(L) with respect to the principal involution is Lie solvable, Lie nilpotent, or bounded Lie Engel.
The property of degeneration of modular graded Lie algebras, first investigated by B. Weisfeiler, is analyzed. Transitive irreducible graded Lie algebras $L=\sum_{i\in \mathbb Z}L_i,$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>2,$ with classical reductive component $L_0$ are considered. We show that if a non-degenerate Lie algebra $L$ contains a transitive degenerate subalgebra $L'$ such that $\dim L'_1>1,$ then $L$ is an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra.
This paper is a further contribution to the extensive study by a number of authors of the subalgebra lattice of a Lie algebra. It is shown that, in certain circumstances, including for all solvable algebras, for all Lie algebras over algebraically closed fields of characteristic p > 0 that have absolute toral rank less than or equal to 1 or are restricted, and for all Lie algebras having the one-and-a-half generation property, the conditions of modularity and semi-modularity are equivalent, but that the same is not true for all Lie algebras over a perfect field of characteristic three. Semi-mo…
For every field $F$ which has a quadratic extension $E$ we show there are non-metabelian infinite-dimensional thin graded Lie algebras all of whose homogeneous components, except the second one, have dimension $2$. We construct such Lie algebras as $F$-subalgebras of Lie algebras $M$ of maximal class over $E$. We characterise the thin Lie $F$-subalgebras of $M$ generated in degree $1$. Moreover we show that every thin Lie algebra $L$ whose ring of graded endomorphisms of degree zero of $L^3$ is a quadratic extension of $F$ can be obtained in this Lie algebra of maximal class over $E$ which are…
We determine all two-dimensional Lie subalgebras of the centreless Virasoro algebra and complete the characterization of all finite dimensional Lie subalgebras of the complex Virasoro algebra.
Let W_n(K) be the Lie algebra of derivations of the polynomial algebra K[X]:=K[x_1,...,x_n] over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic zero. A subalgebra L of W_n(K) is called polynomial if it is a submodule of the K[X]-module W_n(K). We prove that the centralizer of every nonzero element in L is abelian provided L has rank one. This allows to classify finite-dimensional subalgebras in polynomial Lie algebras of rank one.
This paper deals with the problem of conjugacy of Cartan subalgebras for affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras. Unlike the methods used by Peterson and Kac, our approach is entirely cohomological and geometric. It is deeply rooted on the theory of reductive group schemes developed by Demazure and Grothendieck, and on the work of J. Tits on buildings.
Results about the following classes of finite-dimensional Lie algebras over a field of characteristic zero are presented: anisotropic (i.e., Lie algebras for which each adjoint operator is semisimple), regular (i.e., Lie algebras in which each nonzero element is regular in the sense of Bourbaki), minimal nonabelian (i.e., nonabelian Lie algebras all whose proper subalgebras are abelian), and algebras of depth 2 (i.e., Lie algebras all whose proper subalgebras are abelian or minimal nonabelian).
The aim of this paper is to introduce the notion of intuitionistic fuzzy Lie subalgebras and intutionistic fuzzy Lie ideals of n-Lie algebras. It is a generalization of intuitionistic fuzzy Lie algebras. Then, we investigate some of characteristics of intutionistic fuzzy Lie ideals (resp. subalgebras) of n-Lie algeras. Finally, we define the image and the inverse image of intuitionistic fuzzy Lie subalgebra under n-Lie algebra homomorphism. The properties of intuitionistic fuzzy n-Lie subalgebras and intuitionistic fuzzy Lie ideals under homomorphisms of n-Lie algebras are studied. Finally, we…
J. G. Thompson showed that a finite group G is solvable if and only if every two -generated subgroup is solvable. Recently, Grunevald, Kunyavskii, Nikolova, and Plotkin have shown that the analogue holds for finite-dimensional Lie algebras over infinite fields of characteristic greater than 5. It is a natural question to ask to what extent the two-generated subalgebras determine the structure of the algebra. It is to this question that this paper is addressed. Here, we consider the classes of strongly-solvable and of supersolvable Lie algebras, and the property of triangulability.
The process of complexification is used to classify a Lie algebra and identify its Cartan subalgebra. However, this method does not distinguish between real forms of a complex Lie algebra, which can differ in signature. In this paper, we show how Cartan decompositions of a complexified Lie algebra can be combined with information from the Killing form to identify real forms of a given Lie algebra. We apply this technique to sl(3,O), a real form of e6 with signature (52,26), thereby identifying chains of real subalgebras and their corresponding Cartan subalgebras within e6. Motivated by an expl…

We consider finite-dimensional complex Lie algebras admitting a periodic derivation, i.e., a nonsingular derivation which has finite multiplicative order. We show that such Lie algebras are at most two-step nilpotent and give several characterizations, such as the existence of gradings by sixth roots of unity, or the existence of a nonsingular derivation whose inverse is again a derivation. We also obtain results on the existence of periodic prederivations. In this context we study a generalization of Engel-4-Lie algebras.
We initiate the investigation of the projective variety $E(r,g)$ of elementary subalgebras of dimension $r$ of a ($p$-restricted) Lie algebra $g$ for some $r > 0$ and demonstrate that this variety encodes considerable information about the representations of $g$. For various choices of $g$ and $r$, we identify the geometric structure of $E(r,g)$. We show that special classes of (restricted) representations of $g$ lead to algebraic vector bundles on $E(r,g)$. For $g = Lie(G)$ the Lie algebra of an algebraic group $G$, rational representations of $G$ enable us to realize familiar algebraic vecto…
In this paper we study the lattice of restricted subalgebras of a restricted Lie algebra. In particular, we consider those algebras in which this lattice is dually atomistic, lower or upper semimodular, or in which every restricted subalgebra is a quasi-ideal. The fact that there are one-dimensional subalgebras which are not restricted results in some of these conditions being weaker than for the corresponding conditions in the non-restricted case.
We call a subalgebra $U$ of a Lie algebra $L$ a $CAP$-subalgebra of $L$ if for any chief factor $H/K$ of $L$, we have $H \cap U = K \cap U$ or $H+U = K+U$. In this paper we investigate some properties of such subalgebras and obtain some characterizations for a finite-dimensional Lie algebra $L$ to be solvable under the assumption that some of its maximal subalgebras or $2$-maximal subalgebras be $CAP$-subalgebras.
The purpose of this paper is to consider when two maximal subalgebras of a finite-dimensional solvable Lie algebra $L$ are conjugate, and to investigate their intersection.
We establish the conjugacy of Cartan subalgebras for generic Lie tori "of type A". This is the only conjugacy problem of Lie tori related to Extended Affine Lie Algebras that remained open.
In this paper we study a Lie-theoretic analogue of a generalisation of the prefrattini subgroups introduced by W. Gaschütz. The approach follows that of P. Hauck and H. Kurtzweil for groups, by first considering complements in subalgebra intervals. Conjugacy of these subalgebras is established for a large class of solvable lie algebras.
A chain $S_0 < S_1 < \ldots < S_n = L$ is a {\em maximal chain} if each $S_i$ is a maximal subalgebra of $S_{i+1}$. The subalgebra $S_0$ in such a series is called an {\em $n$-maximal} subalgebra. There are many interesting results concerning the question of what certain intrinsic properties of the maximal subalgebras of a Lie algebra $L$ imply about the structure of $L$ itself. Here we consider whether similar results can be obtained by imposing conditions on the $n$-maximal subalgebras of $L$, where $n>1$.
In this thesis we consider the maximal subalgebras of the exceptional Lie algebras in algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic. This begins with a quick recap of the article by Herpel and Stewart which considered the Cartan type maximal subalgebras in the exceptional Lie algebras for good characteristic, and then the article by Premet considering non-semisimple maximal subalgebras in good characteristic. For $p=5$ we give an example of what appears to be a new maximal subalgebra in the exceptional Lie algebra of type $E_8$. We show that this maximal subalgebra is isomorphic to th…
In this paper, we classify all capable nilpotent Lie algebras with the derived subalgebra of dimension 2 over an arbitrary field. Moreover, the explicit structure of such Lie algebras of class 3 is given.
The purpose of this paper is to continue the study of chief factors of a Lie algebra and to prove a further strengthening of the Jordan-Hölder Theorem for chief series.
The main purpose of this paper is to study the finite-dimensional solvable Lie algebras described in its title, which we call {\em minimal non-${\mathcal N}$}. To facilitate this we investigate solvable Lie algebras of nilpotent length $k$, and of nilpotent length $\leq k$, and {\em extreme} Lie algebras, which have the property that their nilpotent length is equal to the number of conjugacy classes of maximal subalgebras. We characterise the minimal non-${\mathcal N}$ Lie algebras in which every nilpotent subalgebra is abelian, and those of solvability index $\leq 3$.
That finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras over the complex numbers can be classified by means of purely combinatorial and geometric objects such as Coxeter-Dynkin diagrams and indecomposable irreducible root systems, is arguably one of the most elegant results in mathematics. The definition of the root system is done by fixing a Cartan subalgebra of the given Lie algebra. The remarkable fact is that (up to isomorphism) this construction is independent of the choice of the Cartan subalgebra. The modern way of establishing this fact is by showing that all Cartan subalgebras are conjugate. For …
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field, $R$ be an associative and commutative $\mathbb{K}$-algebra and $L$ be a Lie algebra over $\mathbb{K}$. We give some descriptions of injections from $L$ to Lie algebra of $\mathbb{K}$-derivations of $R$ in the terms of $L$.
We obtain the functions that bound the dimensions of finite dimensional nilpotent associative or Lie algebras of class 2 over an algebraically closed field in terms of the dimensions of their commutative subalgebras. As a result, we also compute a similar function for complex nilpotent Lie groups of class 2.
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a real semisimple Lie algebra with Iwasawa decomposition $\mathfrak{k} \oplus \mathfrak{a} \oplus \mathfrak{n}$. We show that, except for some explicit exceptional cases, every derivation of the nilpotent subalgebra $\mathfrak{n}$ that preserves its restricted root space decomposition is of the form $\text{ad}( W)$, where $W \in \mathfrak{m}\oplus .
