We obtain upper bounds for the fourth and higher moments of short exponential sums involving Fourier coefficients of holomorphic cusp forms twisted by rational additive twists with small denominators.
In this paper we present several finite families of congruences between cusp forms and Eisenstein series of higher weights at powers of prime ideals. We formulate a conjecture which describes properties of the prime ideals and their relation to the weights. We check the validity of the conjecture on several numerical examples.
We show that if a modular cuspidal eigenform $f$ of weight $2k$ is $2$-adically close to an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$, which has a cyclic rational $4$-isogeny, then $n$-th Fourier coefficient of $f$ is non-zero in the short interval $(X, X + cX^{\frac{1}{4}})$ for all $X \gg 0$ and for some $c > 0$. We use this fact to produce non-CM cuspidal eigenforms $f$ of level $N>1$ and weight $k > 2$ such that $i_f(n) \ll n^{\frac{1}{4}}$ for all $n \gg 0$.
In two previous papers we used the geometry of complete polyhedral fans to construct a subring $\TTT (l)$ of the modular forms on $Γ_{1} (l)$, and showed that for weight two the cuspidal part of $\TTT (l)$ coincides with the space of cusp forms of analytic rank zero. In this paper we show that in weights greater than two, the cuspidal part of $\TTT (l)$ coincides with the space of all cusp forms.
The purpose of this paper is to collect and make explicit the results of Gel'fand, Graev and Piatetski-Shapiro and Miyazaki for the $GL(3)$ cusp forms which are non-trivial on $SO(3,\mathbb{R})$. We give new descriptions of the spaces of cusp forms of minimal $K$-type and from the Fourier-Whittaker expansions of such forms give a complete and completely explicit spectral expansion for $L^2(SL(3,\mathbb{Z})\backslash PSL(3,\mathbb{R}))$, accounting for multiplicities, in the style of Duke, Friedlander and Iwaniec's paper on Artin $L$-functions. We directly compute the Jacquet integral for the W…
We study congruences between cuspidal modular forms and Eisenstein series at levels which are square-free integers and for equal even weights. This generalizes our previous results from Naskręcki [17] for prime levels and provides further evidence for the sharp bounds obtained under restrictive ramification conditions. We prove an upper bound on the exponent in the general square-free situation and also discuss the existence of the congruences when the coefficients belong to the rational numbers and weight equals 2.
We construct an explicit family of modular iterated integrals which involves cusp forms. This leads to a new method of producing "invariant versions" of iterated integrals of modular forms. The construction will be based on an extension of higher-order modular forms which, in contrast to the standard higher-order forms, applies to general Fuchsian groups of the first kind and, as such, is of independent interest.
By using new techniques with the degenerate Whittaker functions found by Ikeda-Yamana, we construct higher level cusp form on $E_{7,3}$, called Ikeda type lift, from any Hecke cusp form whose corresponding automorphic representation has no supercuspidal local components. This generalizes the previous results on level one forms. But there are new phenomena in higher levels; first, we can handle non-trivial central characters. Second, the lift depends only on the restriction of the Hecke cusp form to $SL_2$. Hence any twist of the cusp form gives rise to the same lift. However for square free le…
Let $Γ\subseteq\mathrm{PSL}_{2}(\mathbb{R})$ be a Fuchsian subgroup of the first kind acting on the upper half-plane $\mathbb{H}$. Consider the $d$-dimensional space of cusp forms $\mathcal{S}_{k}^Γ$ of weight $2k$ for $Γ$, and let $\{f_{1},\ldots,f_{d}\}$ be an orthonormal basis of $\mathcal{S}_{k}^Γ$ with respect to the Petersson inner product. In this paper we show that the sup-norm of the quantity $S_{k}^Γ(z):=\sum_{j=1}^{d}| f_{j}(z)|^{2}\,\mathrm{Im}(z)^{2k}$ is bounded as $O_Γ(k)$ in the cocompact setting, and as $O_Γ(k^{3/2})$ in the cofinite case, where the implied constants depend so…
For an arbitrary even genus $2n$ we show that the subspace of Siegel cusp forms of degree $2n$ generated by Ikeda lifts of elliptic cusp forms can be characterized by certain linear relations among Fourier coefficients. This generatizes the work of Kohnen and Kojima.

We prove that two cusps of the same dimension in the Baily-Borel compactification of some classical series of modular varieties are linearly dependent in the rational Chow group of the compactification. This gives a higher dimensional analogue of the Manin-Drinfeld theorem. As a consequence, we obtain a higher dimensional generalization of modular units as higher Chow cycles on the modular variety.
We classify Siegel modular cusp forms of weight two for the paramodular group K(p) for primes p< 600. We find that weight two Hecke eigenforms beyond the Gritsenko lifts correspond to certain abelian varieties defined over the rationals of conductor p. The arithmetic classification is in a companion article by A. Brumer and K. Kramer. The Paramodular Conjecture, supported by these computations and consistent with the Langlands philosophy and the work of H. Yoshida, is a partial extension to degree 2 of the Shimura-Taniyama Conjecture. These nonlift Hecke eigenforms share Euler factors with the…
For a hyperbolic surface embedded eigenvalues of the Laplace operator are unstable and tend to become resonances. A sufficient dissolving condition was identified by Phillips-Sarnak and is elegantly expressed in Fermi's Golden Rule. We prove formulas for higher approximations and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for dissolving a cusp form with eigenfunction $u_j$ into a resonance. In the framework of perturbations in character varieties, we relate the result to the special values of the $L$-series $L(u_j\otimes F^n, s)$. This is the Rankin-Selberg convolution of $u_j$ with $F(z)^n$, …
We combine the Duke-Imamoglu-Ikeda lifting with the theta lifting to produce new CAP representations of metaplectic, symplectic and orthogonal groups. These constructions partially generalize the theories of Waldspurger on the Shimura correspondence and of Piatetski-Shapiro on the Saito-Kurokawa lifting to higher dimensions. Applications include a relation between Fourier coefficients of Hilbert cusp forms of weight k+1/2 and a weighted sum of the representation numbers of a quadratic form of rank 2k by a quadratic form of rank 4k.

Recently, Juyal, Maji, and Sathyanarayana have studied a Lambert series associated with a cusp form over the full modular group and the Möbius function. In this paper, we investigate the Lambert series $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}[a_f(n)ψ(n)*μ(n)ψ'(n)]\exp(-ny),$ where $a_f(n)$ is the $n$th Fourier coefficient of a cusp form $f$ over any congruence subgroup, and $ψ$ and $ ψ'$ are primitive Dirichlet characters. This extends the earlier work to the case of higher level subgroups and also gives a character analogue.
In this note, we show that modular cusp forms have no higher direct images between toroidal and minimal compactifiations. --- Dans cette note, nous montrons que les faisceaux de formes modulaires cuspidales n'ont pas d'image directe superieure entre compactifications toroidale et minimale.
We give a classification of the lattices of rank r=4, r=8 and r=12 over \Q(\sqrt{-3}), which are even and unimodular \Z-lattices. Using this classification we construct the associated theta series, which are Hermitian modular forms, and compute the filtration of cusp forms.
We determine the size of spaces of higher order Maass forms of even weight for cofinite discrete subgroups of PSL(2,R) with cusps. If exponential growth at the cusps is allowed, the spaces of Maass forms of a given order are as large as algebraic constrictions allow. We show the analogous statement for the spaces of holomorphic forms. For functions on the universal covering group of PSL(2,R) we introduce the concept of generalized weight. For the resulting spaces of higher order Maass forms with even generalized weight we show that the size is maximal.
We derive a formula for Greenberg's $L$-invariant of Tate twists of the symmetric sixth power of an ordinary non-CM cuspidal newform of weight $\geq4$, under some technical assumptions. This requires a "sufficiently rich" Galois deformation of the symmetric cube which we obtain from the symmetric cube lift to $\GSp(4)_{/\QQ}$ of Ramakrishnan--Shahidi and the Hida theory of this group developed by Tilouine--Urban. The $L$-invariant is expressed in terms of derivatives of Frobenius eigenvalues varying in the Hida family. Our result suggests that one could compute Greenberg's $L$-invariant of all…
For a positive integer $N$, we say that $\infty$ is a Weierstrass point on the modular curve $X_0(N)$ if there is a non-zero cusp form of weight $2$ on $Γ_0(N)$ which vanishes at $\infty$ to order greater than the genus of $X_0(N)$. If $p$ is a prime with $p \nmid N$, Ogg proved that $\infty $ is not a Weierstrass point on $X_0(pN)$ if the genus of $X_0(N)$ is $0$. We prove a similar result for even weights $k \geq 4$. We also study the space of weight $k$ cusp forms on $Γ_0(N)$ vanishing to order greater than the dimension.
Higher order group cohomology is defined and first properties are given. Using modular symbols, an Eichler-Shimura homomorphism is constructed mapping spaces of higher order cusp forms to higher order cohomology groups.
We prove a strong form of the trivial zero conjecture at the central point for the $p$-adic $L$-function of a non-critically refined self-dual cohomological cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_2$ over a totally real field, which is Iwahori spherical at places above $p$. In the case of a simple zero we adapt the approach of Greenberg and Stevens, based on the functional equation for the $p$-adic $L$-function of a nearly finite slope family and on improved $p$-adic $L$-functions that we construct using automorphic symbols and overconvergent cohomology. For higher order zeros we d…

Serre proved that any holomorphic cusp form of weight one for $Γ_1(N)$ is lacunary while a holomorphic modular form for $Γ_1(N)$ of higher integer weight is lacunary if and only if it is a linear combination of cusp forms of CM-type (see Serre, subsections 7.6 and 7.7). In this paper, we show that when a non-zero modular function of arbitrary real weight for any finite index subgroup of the modular group ${\SL}_2(\Z)$ is lacunary, it is necessarily holomorphic on the upper-half plane, finite at the cusps and has non-negative weight.

In this article, using methods from geometric analysis and theory of heat kernels, we derive qualitative estimates of automorphic cusp forms defined over quaternion algebras. Using which, we prove an average version of the holomorphic QUE conjecture. We then derive quantitative estimates of classical Hilbert modular cusp forms. This is a generalization of the results from [3] and [9] to higher dimensions.

In this paper a theory of Hecke operators for higher order modular forms is established. The definition of cusp forms and attached L-functions is extended beyond the realm of parabolic invariants. The role of representation theoretic methods is clarified and, motivated by higher order forms, new convolution products of L-functions are introduced.
Let $Γ$ be the Fuchsian group of the first kind. For an even integer $m\ge 4$, we describe the space $H^{m/2}\left(\mathfrak R_Γ\right)$ of $m/2$--holomorphic differentials in terms of a subspace $S_m^H(Γ)$ of the space of (holomorphic) cuspidal modular forms $S_m(Γ)$. This generalizes classical isomorphism $S_2(Γ)\simeq H^{1}\left(\mathfrak R_Γ\right)$. We study the properties of $S_m^H(Γ)$. As an application, we describe the algorithm implemented in SAGE for testing if a cusp at $\infty$ for non-hyperelliptic $X_0(N)$ is a $\frac{m}{2}$-Weierstrass point.
Let $ Γ$ be a congruence subgroup of $ \mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb Z) $. Using Poincaré series of $ K $-finite matrix coefficients of integrable discrete series representations of $ \mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb R) $, we construct a spanning set for the space $ S_m(Γ) $ of Siegel cusp forms of weight $ m\in\mathbb Z_{>2n} $. We prove the non-vanishing of certain elements of this spanning set using Muić's integral non-vanishing criterion for Poincaré series on locally compact Hausdorff groups. Moreover, using the representation theory of $ \mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb R) $, we study the Petersson inner pro…
In this paper we prove one side divisibility of the Iwasawa-Greenberg main conjecture for Rankin-Selberg product of a weight two cusp form and an ordinary CM form of higher weight, using congruences between Klingen Eisenstein series and cusp forms on $\mathrm{GU}(3,1)$, generalizing earlier result of the third-named author to allow non-ordinary cusp forms. The main result is a key input in the third author's proof for Kobayashi's $\pm$-main conjecture for supersingular elliptic curves. The new ingredient here is developing a semi-ordinary Hida theory along an appropriate smaller weight space, …
Let $F$ be the function field of an elliptic curve $X$ over $\F_q$. In this paper, we calculate explicit formulas for unramified Hecke operators acting on automorphic forms over $F$. We determine these formulas in the language of the graph of an Hecke operator, for which we use its interpretation in terms of $¶^1$-bundles on $X$. This allows a purely geometric approach, which involves, amongst others, a classification of the $¶^1$-bundles on $X$. We apply the computed formulas to calculate the dimension of the space of unramified cusp forms and the support of a cusp form. We show that a cuspid…
In 1997, Serre proved that the eigenvalues of normalised $p$-th Hecke operator $T^{'}_p$ acting on the space of cusp forms of weight $k$ and level $N$ are equidistributed in $[-2,2]$ with respect to a measure that converge to the Sato-Tate measure, whenever $N+k \to \infty$. In 2009, Murty and Sinha proved the effective version of Serre's theorem. In 2011, using Kuznetsov trace formula, Lau and Wang derived the effective joint distribution of eigenvalues of normalized Hecke operators acting on the space of primitive cusp forms of weight $k$ and level $1$. In this paper, we extend the result of…
We give a classification of the Harish-Chandra modules generated by the pullback to $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb R)$ of harmonic Maass forms for congruence subgroups of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$ with exponential growth allowed at the cusps. We assume that the weight is integral but include vector-valued forms. Due to the weak growth condition, these modules need not be irreducible. Elementary Lie algebra considerations imply that there are 9 possibilities, and we show, by giving explicit examples, that all of them arise from harmonic Maass forms. Finally, we briefly discuss the case of forms that are n…
We classify Harish-Chandra modules generated by the pullback to the metaplectic group of harmonic weak Maaß forms with exponential growth allowed at the cusps. This extends work by Schulze-Pillot and parallels recent work by Bringmann-Kudla, who investigated the case of integral weights. We realize each of our cases via a regularized theta lift of an integral weight harmonic weak Maaß form. Harish-Chandra modules in both integral and half-integral weight that occur need not be irreducible. Therefore, our display of the role that the theta lifting takes in this picture, we hope, contributes to …
The space of polyharmonic Maass forms was introduced by Lagarias-Rhoades, recently. They constructed its basis from the Taylor coefficients of the real analytic Eisenstein series. In this paper, we introduce polyharmonic weak Maass forms, that is, we relax the moderate growth condition at cusp, and we construct a basis as a generalization of Lagarias-Rhoades' works. As a corollary, we can obtain a preimage of an arbitrary polyharmonic weak Maass form under the xi-operator.

Closed string amplitudes at genus $h\leq 3$ are given by integrals of Siegel modular functions on a fundamental domain of the Siegel upper half-plane. When the integrand is of rapid decay near the cusps, the integral can be computed by the Rankin-Selberg method, which consists of inserting an Eisenstein series $E_h(s)$ in the integrand, computing the integral by the orbit method, and finally extracting the residue at a suitable value of $s$. String amplitudes, however, typically involve integrands with polynomial or even exponential growth at the cusps, and a renormalization scheme is required…
The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we introduce a new method for evaluating the multiplicity of a given discrete series in the space of level $1$ automorphic forms of a split classical group $G$ over $\mathbb{Z}$, and provide numerical applications in absolute rank $\leq 8$. Second, we prove a classification result for the level one cuspidal algebraic automorphic representations of ${\rm GL}_n$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ ($n$ arbitrary) whose motivic weight is $\leq 24$. In both cases, a key ingredient is a classical method based on the Weil explicit formula, which allows to disprove the existenc…
In a previous paper with Schmid (math.NT/0402382) we considered the regularity of automorphic distributions for GL(2,R), and its connections to other topics in number theory and analysis. In this paper we turn to the higher rank setting, establishing the nontrivial bound sum_{n < T} a_n exp(2 pi i n alpha) = O_ε(T^{3/4+ε}) uniformly for alpha real, for a_n the coefficients of the L-function of a cusp form on GL(3,Z)\GL(3,R). We also derive an equivalence (Theorem 7.1) between analogous cancellation statements for cusp forms on GL(n,R), and the sizes of certain period integrals. These in turn i…
