In this paper we are concerned with the monodromy of Picard-Fuch differential equations associated with one-parameter families of Calabi-Yau threefolds. Our results show that in the hypergeometric cases the matrix representations of monodromy relative to the Frobenius bases can be expressed in terms of the geometric invariants of the underlying Calabi-Yau threefolds. I construct some smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds in characteristic two and three that do not lift to characteristic zero. These threefolds are pencils of supersingular K3-surfaces. The construction depends on Moret-Bailly's pencil of abelian surfaces and Katsura's analysis of generalized Kummer surfaces. The threefold in characteristic two turns out to be nonrigid.

In the present paper we propose a combinatorial approach to study the so called double octic Clabi--Yau threefolds. We use this description to give a complete classification of double octics with $h^{1,2}\le1$ and to derive their geometric properties (Kummer surface fibrations, automorphisms, special elements in families).

We present a method for numerical computation of period integrals of a rigid Calabi-Yau threefold using Picard-Fuchs operator of a one-parameter smoothing. If X is a smooth projective complex threefold, the Hodge conjecture holds for degree 4 rational Hodge classes on X. Kollar gave examples where it does not hold for integral Hodge classes of degree 4, that is integral Hodge classes need not be classes of algebraic 1-cycles with integral coefficients. We show however that the Hodge conjecture holds for integral Hodge classes of degree 4 on a uniruled or a Calabi-Yau threefold.
Only two ways to construct non-liftable Calabi-Yau threefolds are currently known, one example by Hirokado and one method of Schröer. This article computes some cohomological invariants of these examples of non-liftable Calabi-Yau threefolds, in particular it computes their mini-versal deformations. One conclusion is that their mixed characteristic mini-versal deformation spaces are actually smooth over the characteristic $p$ base field. Furthermore, a new family, constructed in the spirit of Schröer, is introduced and the same calculations are performed for it.
