In this paper we are concerned with the monodromy of Picard-Fuch differential equations associated with one-parameter families of Calabi-Yau threefolds. Our results show that in the hypergeometric cases the matrix representations of monodromy relative to the Frobenius bases can be expressed in terms of the geometric invariants of the underlying Calabi-Yau threefolds. This phenomenon is also verified numerically for other families of Calabi-Yau threefolds in the paper. Furthermore, we discover that under a suitable change of bases the monodromy groups are contained in certain congruence subgroups of Sp(4,Z) of finite index whose levels are related to the geometric invariants of the Calabi-Yau threefolds
This thesis studies some examples of families of K3 surfaces with Picard lattices of maximal rank. These families occur as invariants of finite automorphism groups. The Picard-Fuchs differential equations describing the variation of Hodge structure in these families are considered. Techniques are developed to find the corresponding monodromy groups as arithmetic Fuchsian groups acting on the families' period spaces.
The normal function associated to algebraic cycles in higher Chow groups defines a differential equation. This Picard-Fuchs equation defines an extension of $D$-modules as well as an extension of local systems. In this paper, we show that both extensions define the same extension of mixed Hodge modules determined by the normal function.
The thesis deals with calculating the Picard-Fuchs equation of special one-parameter families of invertible polynomials. In particular, for an invertible polynomial $g(x_1,...,x_n)$ we consider the family $f(x_1,...,x_n)=g(x_1,...,x_n)+s\cdot\prod x_i$, where $s$ denotes the parameter. For the families of hypersurfaces defined by these polynomials, we compute the Picard-Fuchs equation, i.e. the ordinary differential equation which solutions are exactly the period integrals. For the proof of the exact appearance of the Picard-Fuchs equation we use a combinatorial version of the Griffiths-Dwork …
We describe an algorithm for computing the Picard-Fuchs equation for a family of twists of a fixed elliptic surface. We then apply this algorithm to obtain the equation for several examples, which are coming from families of Kummer surfaces over Shimura curves, as studied in our previous work. We use this to find correspondenced between the parameter spaces of our families and Shimura curves. These correspondences can sometimes be proved rigorously.
We present a method for numerical computation of period integrals of a rigid Calabi-Yau threefold using Picard-Fuchs operator of a one-parameter smoothing. Our method gives a possibility of computing the lattice of period integrals of a rigid double octic without any explicit knowledge of its geometric properties, employing only simple facts from the theory of Fuchsian equations and computations in MAPLE with a library for differential equations. As a surprising consequence we also get approximations of additional integrals related to a singular (nodal) model of considered Calabi-Yau threefold…
Given a variation of Hodge structure over $\mathbb{P}^1$ with Hodge numbers $(1,1,\dots,1)$, we show how to compute the degrees of the Deligne extension of its Hodge bundles, following Eskin-Kontsevich-Möller-Zorich, by using the local exponents of the corresponding Picard-Fuchs equation. This allows us to compute the Hodge numbers of Zucker's Hodge structure on the corresponding parabolic cohomology groups. We also apply this to families of elliptic curves, K3 surfaces and Calabi-Yau threefolds.
We use the mixed-twist construction of Doran and Malmendier to obtain a multi-parameter family of K3 surfaces of Picard rank $ρ\ge 16$. Upon identifying a particular Jacobian elliptic fibration on its general member, we determine the lattice polarization and the Picard-Fuchs system for the family. We construct a sequence of restrictions that lead to extensions of the polarization by two-elementary lattices. We show that the Picard-Fuchs operators for the restricted families coincide with known resonant hypergeometric systems. Second, for the one-parameter mirror families of deformed Fermat hyp…
A relation between the number of rational curves of fixed degree on Calabi Yau threefolds and the Picard Fuchs equations, which was suggested as part of the study of mirror symmetry, is verified in the case of complete intersection of two cubics and lines.
We report on $25$ families of projective Calabi-Yau threefolds that do not have a point of maximal unipotent monodromy in their moduli space. The construction is based on an analysis of certain pencils of octic arrangements that were found by C. Meyer. There are seven cases where the Picard-Fuchs operator is of order two and $18$ cases where it is of order four. The birational nature of the Picard-Fuchs operator can be used effectively to distinguish between families whose members have the same Hodge numbers.
Using Gauss-Manin derivatives of normal functions, we arrive at some remarkable results on the non-triviality of the transcendental regulator for $K_m$ of a very general projective algebraic manifold. Our strongest results are for the transcendental regulator for $K_1$ of a very general $K3$ surface. We also construct an explicit family of $K_1$ cycles on $H \oplus E_8 \oplus E_8$-polarized $K3$ surfaces, and show they are indecomposable by a direct evaluation of the real regulator. Critical use is made of natural elliptic fibrations, hypersurface normal forms, and an explicit parametrization …
In this article we introduce algorithms which compute iterations of Gauss-Manin connections, Picard-Fuchs equations of Abelian integrals and mixed Hodge structure of affine varieties of dimension $n$ in terms of differential forms. In the case $n=1$ such computations have many applications in differential equations and counting their limit cycles. For $n>3$, these computations give us an explicit definition of Hodge cycles.
We suggest an algorithm for derivation of the Picard--Fuchs system of Pfaffian equations for Abelian integrals corresponding to semiquasihomogeneous Hamiltonians. It is based on an effective decomposition of polynomial forms in the Brieskorn lattice. The construction allows for an explicit upper bound on the norms of the polynomial coefficients, an important ingredient in studying zeros of these integrals.
We describe a strategy for computing Yukawa couplings and the mirror map, based on the Picard-Fuchs equation. (Our strategy is a variant of the method used by Candelas, de la Ossa, Green, and Parkes in the case of quintic hypersurfaces.) We then explain a technique of Griffiths which can be used to compute the Picard-Fuchs equations of hypersurfaces. Finally, we carry out the computation for four specific examples (including quintic hypersurfaces, previously done by Candelas et al.). This yields predictions for the number of rational curves of various degrees on certain hypersurfaces in weight…
Recently J.C. Rohde constructed families of Calabi-Yau threefolds parametrised by Shimura varieties. The points corresponding to threefolds with CM are dense in the Shimura variety and, moreover, the families do not have boundary points with maximal unipotent monodromy. Both aspects are of interest for Mirror Symmetry. In this paper we discuss one of Rohde's examples in detail and we explicitly give the Picard-Fuchs equation for this one dimensional family.
The global behaviour of the normal function associated with van Geemen's family of lines on the mirror quintic is studied. Based on the associated inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equation, the series expansions around large complex structure, conifold, and around the open string discriminant are obtained. The monodromies are explicitly calculated from this data and checked to be integral. The limiting value of the normal function at large complex structure is an irrational number expressible in terms of the di-logarithm.
For a fixed integer N, and fixed numbers b_1,...,b_N, we consider sequences, the nth term (a_n) of which is the sum of the squares of the terms in the expansion of (b_1 + ... + b_N)^n. In the case all b_i=1, we give a formula for a recurrence relation for the a_n. Otherwise we give an algorithm for finding a recurrence relation. As an application, we give the Picard-Fuchs equations for certain families of elliptic curves.
We study the variation of relative cohomology for a pair consisting of a smooth projective hypersurface and an algebraic subvariety in it. We construct an inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equation by applying a Picard-Fuchs operator to the holomorphic top form on a toric Calabi-Yau hypersurface, and deriving a general formula for the $d$-exact form on one side of the equation. We also derive a double residue formula, giving a purely algebraic way to compute the inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equations for Abel-Jacobi map, which has played an important role in recent study of D-branes [25]. Using the var…

A method for computing the open string mirror map and superpotential for noncompact Calabi-Yaus, following the physical computations of Lerche and Mayr, is presented. It is also shown that the obvious extension of these techniques to the compact case is not consistent. As an example, the local CP^2 case is worked out in 2 ways.
In this paper we will study the double zeta values $ζ(k,m)$ using Picard-Fuchs equation. We will give a very efficient method to evaluate $ζ(k,1)$ (resp. $ζ(k,2)$) in terms of the products of zeta values $ζ(2),ζ(3),\cdots$ when $k$ is even (resp. odd), which admits immediate generalization to arbitrary double zeta values. Moreover, this method provides new insights into the nature of double zeta values, which further can be generalized to arbitrary multiple zeta values.
We determine explicit generators for a cohomology group constructed from a solution of a fuchsian linear differential equation and describe its relation with cohomology groups with coefficients in a local system. In the parameterized case, this yields into an algorithm which computes new fuchsian differential equations from those depending on multi-parameters. This generalizes the classical convolution of solutions of fuchsian differential equations.
Motivated by a conjecture of Lian and Yau concerning the mirror map in string theory, we determine when the mirror map q-series of certain elliptic curve and K3 surface families are Hauptmoduln (genus zero modular functions). Our geometric criterion for modularity characterizes orbifold uniformization properties of their Picard-Fuchs equations, effectively demystifying the mirror-moonshine phenomenon. A longer, more comprehensive treatment of these results will appear shortly.
We present a systematic method to derive an ordinary differential equation for any Feynman integral, where the differentiation is with respect to an external variable. The resulting differential equation is of Fuchsian type. The method can be used within fixed integer space-time dimensions as well as within dimensional regularisation. We show that finding the differential equation is equivalent to solving a linear system of equations. We observe interesting factorisation properties of the D-dimensional Picard-Fuchs operator when D is specialised to integer dimensions.
We study low-degree curves on one-parameter Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces, and their contribution to the space-time superpotential in a superstring compactification with D-branes. We identify all lines that are invariant under at least one permutation of the homogeneous variables, and calculate the inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equation. The irrational large volume expansions satisfy the recently discovered algebraic integrality. The bulk of our work is a careful study of the topological integrality of monodromy under navigation around the complex structure moduli space. This is a powerful method to r…
This paper discusses the overlap of the Hori-Vafa formulation of mirror symmetry with some other constructions. We focus on compact Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces \mathcal{M}_G = {G = 0} in weighted complex projective spaces. The Hori-Vafa formalism relates a family {\mathcal{M}_G \in WCP^{m-1}_{Q_1,...,Q_m}[s] | \sum_{i=1}^m Q_i = s} of such hypersurfaces to a single Landau-Ginzburg mirror theory. A technique suggested by Hori and Vafa allows the Picard-Fuchs equations satisfied by the corresponding mirror periods to be determined. Some examples in which the variety \mathcal{M}_G is crepantly resol…

The monodromy action in the homology (generally with twisted coefficients) of complements of stratified complex analytic varieties depending on parameters is studied. For a wide class of local degenerations of such families (stratified Morse singularities) local monodromy and variation operators are reduced to similar operators acting in the transversal slices of corresponding strata. In particular, these results imply a main part of F. Pham's generalized Picard--Lefschetz formulae.
We propose an extended set of differential operators for local mirror symmetry. If $X$ is Calabi-Yau such that $\dim H_4(X,\Z)=0$, then we show that our operators fully describe mirror symmetry. In the process, a conjecture for intersection theory for such $X$ is uncovered. We also find new operators on several examples of type $X=K_S$ through similar techniques. In addition, open string PF systems are considered.
We propose Picard-Fuchs equations for periods of nonabelian mirrors in this paper. The number of parameters in our Picard-Fuchs equations is the rank of the gauge group of the nonabelian GLSM, which is eventually reduced to the actual number of Kähler parameters. These Picard-Fuchs equations are concise and novel. We justify our proposal by reproducing existing mathematical results, namely Picard-Fuchs equations of Grassmannians and Calabi-Yau manifolds as complete intersections in Grassmannians. Furthermore, our approach can be applied to other nonabelian GLSMs, so we compute Picard-Fuchs equ…
We study the topology of the space of affine hyperplanes $L \subset \CC^n$ which are in general position with respect to a given generic quadratic hypersurface $A$, and calculate the monodromy action of the fundamental group of this space on the relative homology groups $H_*(\CC^n, A \cup L)$ associated with such hyperplanes.
The largest group which occurs as the rotational symmetries of a three-dimensional reflexive polytope is the symmetric group on four elements. There are three pairs of three-dimensional reflexive polytopes with this symmetry group, up to isomorphism. We identify a natural one-parameter family of K3 surfaces corresponding to each of these pairs, show that the symmetric group on four elements acts symplectically on members of these families, and show that a general K3 surface in each family has Picard rank 19. The properties of two of these families have been analyzed in the literature using oth…
The Schwarzian equations satisfied by certain Hauptmoduls (i.e., uniformizing functions for Riemann surfaces of genus zero) are derived from the Picard-Fuchs equations for families of elliptic curves and associated surfaces. The inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equations associated to elliptic integrals with varying endpoints are derived and used to determine solutions of equations that are algebraically related to a class of Painlevé VI equations.
This paper continues our previous work done in math.AG/0008207 and is an attempt to establish a conceptual framework which generalizes the work of Manin on the relation between non-linear second order ODEs of type Painleve VI and integrable systems. The principle behind everything is a strong interaction between K-theory and Picard-Fuchs type differential equations via Abel-Jacobi maps. Our main result is an extension of a theorem of Donagi and Markman to our setup.
Let $f$ and $g$ be reduced homogeneous polynomials in separate sets of variables. We establish a simple formula that relates the eigenspace decomposition of the monodromy operator on the Milnor fiber cohomology of $fg$ to that of $f$ and $g$ separately. We use a relation between local systems and Milnor fiber cohomology that has been established by D. Cohen and A. Suciu.
We define an iterative construction that produces a family of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau $n$-folds with section from a family of elliptic Calabi-Yau varieties of one dimension lower. Parallel to the geometric construction, we iteratively obtain for each family with a point of maximal unipotent monodromy, normalized to be at t=0, its Picard-Fuchs operator and a closed-form expression for the period holomorphic at t=0, through a generalization of the classical Euler transform for hypergeometric functions. In particular, our construction yields one-parameter families of elliptically fibered …
We give a survey on some aspects of the topological investigation of isolated singularities of complex hypersurfaces by means of Picard-Lefschetz theory. We focus on the concept of distinguished bases of vanishing cycles and the concept of monodromy.
We explain the B-model origin of extended Picard-Fuchs equations satisfied by the D-brane superpotential on compact Calabi-Yau threefolds. Via the Abel-Jacobi map, the domainwall tension is identified with a Poincare normal function--a transversal holomorphic section of the Griffiths intermediate Jacobian. Within this formalism, we derive the extended Picard-Fuchs equation associated with the mirror of the real quintic.
Doran and Morgan have introduced certain rational basis for the monodromy group of the Picard-Fuchs operator of a hypergeometric family of Calabi-Yau threefolds. In this paper we compute numerically the transition matrix between a generalization of the Doran-Morgan basis and the Frobenius basis at a half-conifold point of a one-parameter family of double octic Calabi-Yau threefolds. We identify the entries of this matrix as rational functions in the special values $L(f,1)$ and $L(f,2)$ of the corresponding modular form $f$ and one constant. We also present related results concerning the rank o…
We describe globally nilpotent differential operators of rank 2 defined over a number field whose monodromy group is a nonarithmetic Fuchsian group. We show that these differential operators have an S-integral solution. These differential operators are naturally associated with Teichmueller curves in genus 2. They are counterexamples to conjectures by Chudnovsky--Chudnovsky and Dwork. We also determine the field of moduli of primitive Teichmueller curves in genus 2, and an explicit equation in some cases.
We study the Zariski closure of the monodromy group $\mathbf{Mon}$ of Lauricella's hypergeometric function $F_C$. If the identity component $\mathbf{Mon}^0$ acts irreducibly, then $\overline{\mathbf{Mon}} \cap \mathbf{SL}_{2^n}(\mathbb{C})$ must be one of classical groups $\mathbf{SL}_{2^n}(\mathbb{C}), \mathbf{SO}_{2^n}(\mathbb{C})$ and $\mathbf{Sp}_{2^n}(\mathbb{C})$. We also study Calabi-Yau varieties arising from integral representations of $F_C$.
We give an algebraic characterization of Picard-Fuchs operators attached to families of Calabi-Yau manifolds with a point of maximally unipotent monodromy and discuss possibilities for their differential Galois groups.
We prove that under certain spectral assumptions on the monodromy group, solutions of Fuchsian systems of linear equations on the Riemann sphere admit explicit global bounds on the number of their isolated zeros.
This paper contains a preliminary study of the monodromy of certain fourth order differential equations, that were called of Calabi-Yau type in math.NT/0402386. Some of these equations can be interpreted as the Picard-Fuchs equations of a Calabi-Yau manifold with one complex modulus, which links up the observed integrality to the conjectured integrality of the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants. A natural question is if in the other cases such a geometrical interpretation is also possible. Our investigations of the monodromies are intended as a first step in answering this question. We use a numerical …
Let $X$ be the family of hypersurfaces in the odd-dimensional torus ${\mathbb T}^{2n+1}$ defined by a Laurent polynomial $f$ with fixed exponents and variable coefficients. We show that if $nΔ$, the dilation of the Newton polytope $Δ$ of $f$ by the factor $n$, contains no interior lattice points, then the Picard-Fuchs equation of $W_{2n}H^{2n}_{\rm DR}(X)$ has a full set of algebraic solutions (where $W_\bullet$ denotes the weight filtration on de Rham cohomology). We also describe a procedure for finding solutions of these Picard-Fuchs equations.
We study geometric properties of the action of the Picard modular group $Γ=PU(2,1,\mathcal{O}_7)$ on the complex hyperbolic plane $H^2_\mathbb{C}$, where $\mathcal{O}_7$ denotes the ring of algebraic integers in $\mathbb{Q}(i\sqrt{7})$. We list conjugacy classes of maximal finite subgroups in $Γ$ and give an explicit description of the Fuchsian subgroups that occur as stabilizers of mirrors of complex reflections in $Γ$. As an application, we describe an explicit torsion-free subgroup of index $336$ in $Γ$.
We describe examples of computations of Picard-Fuchs operators for families of Calabi-Yau manifolds based on the expansion of a period near a conifold point. We find examples of operators without a point of maximal unipotent monodromy, thus answering a question posed by J. Rohde.
We prove that if two Calabi-Yau invertible pencils have the same dual weights, then they share a common factor in their zeta functions. By using Dwork cohomology, we demonstrate that this common factor is related to a hypergeometric Picard--Fuchs differential equation. The factor in the zeta function is defined over the rationals and has degree at least the order of the Picard--Fuchs equation. As an application, we relate several pencils of K3 surfaces to the Dwork pencil, obtaining new cases of arithmetic mirror symmetry.
A conjecture of Kato says that the monodromy operator on the cohomology of a semi-stable degeneration of projective varieties is represented by an algebraic cycle on the special fiber of a normal crossing model of the fiber product degeneration. We prove this conjecture in the simple case of a semi-stable degeneration arising from a Lefschetz fibration.
We study differential equations satisfied by modular forms associated to $Γ_1\timesΓ_2$, where $Γ_i (i=1,2)$ are genus zero subgroups of $SL_2(\mathbf R)$ commensurable with $SL_2(\mathbf Z)$, e.g., $Γ_0(N)$ or $Γ_0(N)^*$. In some examples, these differential equations are realized as the Picard--Fuch differential equations of families of K3 surfaces with large Picard numbers, e.g., $19, 18, 17, 16$. Our method rediscovers some of the Lian--Yau examples of ``modular relations'' involving power series solutions to the second and the third order differential equations of Fuchsian type in [14, 15…
