We show that Horrock's criterion for the splitting of vector bundles on $\PP^n$ can be extended to vector bundles on multiprojective spaces and to smooth projective varieties with the weak CM property (see Definition 3.11). As a main tool we use the theory of $n$-blocks and Beilinson's type spectral sequences. Cohomological characterizations of vector bundles are also showed.
Here we give a definition of regularity on multiprojective spaces which is different from the definitions of Hoffmann-Wang and Costa-Miró Roig. By using this notion we prove some splitting criteria for vector bundles.
Here we classify the weakly uniform rank two vector bundles on multiprojective spaces. Moreover we show that every rank $r>2$ weakly uniform vector bundle with splitting type $a_{1,1}=...=a_{r,s}=0$ is trivial and every rank $r>2$ uniform vector bundle with splitting type $a_1>...>a_r$, splits.
In this paper we establish the existence of monads on Cartesian products of projective spaces. We construct vector bundles associated to monads on $\mathbb{P}^{a_1}\times\mathbb{P}^{a_1}\times\mathbb{P}^{a_2}\times\mathbb{P}^{a_2}\times\cdots\times\mathbb{P}^{a_n}\times\mathbb{P}^{a_n}$. Once the monad on $X$ exists the next natural question is if the cohomology vector bundle associated to these monads are simple or not. We study these vector bundles associated to monads on $X$ and prove their stability and simplicity.
We prove a few splitting criteria for vector bundles on a quadric hypersurface and Grassmannians. We give also some cohomological splitting conditions for rank 2 bundles on multiprojective spaces. The tools are monads and a Beilinson's type spectral sequence generalized by Costa and Miró-Roig.
This paper investigates the cohomological property of vector bundles on biprojective space. We will give a criterion for a vector bundle to be isomorphic to the tensor product of pullbacks of exterior products of differential sheaves.
We introduce a notion of regularity for coherent sheaves on Grassmannians of lines. We use this notion to prove some extension of Evans-Griffith criterion to characterize direct sums of line bundles. We also give a cohomological characterization of exterior and symmetric powers of the universal bundles of the Grassmannian.
Let $f_s: X_s \to {\bf {P}}^2$ be the blowing-up of $s$ distinct points and $E$ a vector bundle on $X_s$. Here we give a cohomological criterio which is equivalent to $E \cong f_s^\ast (A)$ with $A$ a direct sum of line bundles. We also some cohomological characterizations of very particular rank 2 vector bundles on ${\bf {P}}^2$.
We confirm Beauville's conjecture that claims that if the p-th exterior power of the tangent bundle of a smooth projective variety contains the p-th power of an ample line bundle, then the variety is either the projective space or the p-dimensional quadric hypersurface.
Here we consider the product of varieties with $n$-blocks collections . We give some cohomological splitting conditions for rank 2 bundles. A cohomological characterization for vector bundles is also provided. The tools are Beilinson's type spectral sequences generalized by Costa and Miró-Roig. Moreover we introduce a notion of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity on a product of finitely many projective spaces and smooth quadric hypersurfaces in order to prove two splitting criteria for vector bundle with arbitrary rank.
We use a generalization of Horrocks monads for arithmetic Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) varieties to establish a cohomological characterization of linear and Steiner bundles over projective spaces and quadric hypersurfaces. We also study resolutions of bundles on ACM varieties by line bundles, and characterize linear homological dimension in the case of quadric hypersurfaces.
Using an explicit resolution of the diagonal for the variety V_5, we provide cohomological characterizations of the universal and quotient bundles. A splitting criterion for bundles over V_5 is also proved. The presentation of semistable aCM (i.e. with no intermediate cohomology) bundles is shown, together with a resolution-theoretic classification of low rank aCM bundles.
We consider characterizations of projective varieties in terms of their tangents. S. Mori established the characterization of projective spaces in arbitrary characteristic by ampleness of tangent bundles. J. Wahl characterized projective spaces in characteristic zero by cohomological condition of tangent bundles; in addition, he remarked that a counter-example in characteristic two is constructed from odd-dimensional hyperquadrics $Q_{2n-1}$ with $n > 1$. This is caused by existence of a common point in $\mathbb{P}^{2n}$ which every embedded tangent space to the quadric contains. In general, a…
A Bott tower is an iterated $\CP ^1$-bundle over a point, where each $\CP ^1$-bundle is the projectivization of a rank $2$ decomposable complex vector bundle. For a Bott tower, the filtered cohomology is naturally defined. We show that isomorphism classes of Bott towers are distinguished by their filtered cohomology rings. We even show that any filtered cohomology ring isomorphism between two Bott towers is induced by an isomorphism of the Bott towers.
In the holomorphic or algebraic setting we consider a vector bundle E on a smooth subvariety X in a smooth variety Y over a field of characteristic zero. Assuming E extends to the l-th neighborhood of X in Y, we study cohomological obstructions to extending it further to the k-th neighborhood, for k > l.
We give a cohomological criterion for a parabolic vector bundle on a curve to be semistable. It says that a parabolic vector bundle $E$ with rational parabolic weights is semistable if and only if there is another parabolic vector bundle $F$ with rational parabolic weights such that the cohomologies of the vector bundle underlying the para- bolic tensor product $E \otimes F$ vanish. This criterion generalizes the known semistability criterion of Faltings for vector bundles on curves and significantly improves the result in [Bis07].
We give a cohomological classification of vector bundles of rank $2$ on a smooth affine threefold over an algebraically closed field having characteristic unequal to $2$. As a consequence we deduce that cancellation holds for rank $2$ vector bundles on such varieties. The proofs of these results involve three main ingredients. First, we give a description of the first non-stable ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy sheaf of the symplectic group. Second, these computations can be used in concert with F. Morel's ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy classification of vector bundles on smooth affine schemes and obstructi…
We investigate the jumping conics of stable vector bundles $\Ee$ of rank 2 on a smooth quadric surface $Q$ with the Chern classes $c_1=\Oo_Q(-1,-1)$ and $c_2=4$ with respect to the ample line bundle $\Oo_Q(1,1)$. We describe the set of jumping conics of $\Ee$, a cubic symmetroid in $\PP_3$, in terms of the cohomological properties of $\Ee$. As a consequence, we prove that the set of jumping conics, $S(\Ee)$, uniquely determines $\Ee$. Moreover we prove that the moduli space of such vector bundles is rational.
We study the geometry of the moduli stack of vector bundles of fixed rank and degree over an algebraic curve by introducing a filtration made of open substacks build from $(k, l)$-stable vector bundles. $(k, l)$-stability was introduced by Narasimhan and Ramanan to study the geometry of the coarse moduli space of stable bundles. We will exhibit the stacky picture and analyse the geometric and cohomological properties of the moduli stacks of $(k, l)$-stable vector bundles. For particular pairs $(k, l) $ of integers we also show that these moduli stacks admit coarse moduli spaces and we discuss …
Let W be the germ of a smooth complex surface around an exceptional curve and let E be a rank 2 vector bundle on W. We study the cohomological properties of a finite sequence $E_i, 1 \leq i \leq t$ of rank 2 vector bundles canonically associated to E. We calculate numerical invariants of E in terms of the $E_i.$ If S is a compact complex smooth surface and E is a rank 2 bundle on the blow- up of S at a point, we show that all values of $c_2(E)-c_2(π_* E^{\vee\vee})$ that are numerically possible are actually attained.
A subset K of R^n gives rise to a formal Laurent series with monomials corresponding to lattice points in K. Under suitable hypotheses, this series represents a rational function R(K). Michel Brion has discovered a surprising formula relating the rational function R(P) of a lattice polytope P to the sum of rational functions corresponding to the supporting cones subtended at the vertices of P. The result is re-phrased and generalised in the language of cohomology of line bundles on complete toric varieties. Brion's formula is the special case of an ample line bundle on a projective toric varie…
In this note, we examine the Jacobian ring description of the Hodge structure of zero loci of vector bundle sections on a class of ambient varieties. We consider a set of cohomological vanishing conditions that imply such a description, and we verify these conditions for some new cases. We also observe that the method can be directly extended to log homogeneous varieties. We apply the Jacobian ring to study the null varieties of period integrals and their derivatives, generalizing a result in [9] for projective spaces. As an additional application, we prove the Hodge conjecture for very generi…
We start with a curve over an algebraically closed ground field of positive characteristic $p>0$. By using specialization techniques, under suitable natural coprimality conditions, we prove a cohomological Simpson Correspondence between the moduli space of Higgs bundles and the one of connections on the curve. We also prove a new $p$-multiplicative periodicity concerning the cohomology rings of Dolbeault moduli spaces of degrees differing by a factor of $p$. By coupling this $p$-periodicity in characteristic $p$ with lifting/specialization techniques in mixed characteristic, we find, in arbitr…
We extend a theorem of Ottaviani on cohomological splitting criterion for vector bundles over the Grassmannian to the case of the symplectic isotropic Grassmanian. We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the case of the Grassmanian of symplectic isotropic lines. For the general case the generalization of Ottaviani's conditions are sufficient for vector bundles over the symplectic isotropic Grassmannian. By a calculation in the program LiE, we find that Ottaviani's conditions are necessary for Lagrangian Grassmannian of isotropic $k$-planes for $k\leq 6$, but they fail to be necessary f…
Given a generically smooth stable curve over a discrete valuation ring such that its special fibre is irreducible with one double point, we construct a moduli stack over that descrete valuation ring which is a model for the moduli stack of vector bundles over the generic fibre of the curve. The model has the following nice properties: 1. It is regular. 2. Its special fibre is a normal crossing divisor. 3. The normalization of its special fibre is a locally trivial KGl-bundle over the moduli stack of vector bundles over the normalization of the special fibre of the curve. Here KGl is a canonica…
We describe a vector bundle $\sE$ on a smooth $n$-dimensional ACM variety in terms of its cohomological invariants $H^i_*(\sE)$, $1\leq i \leq n-1$, and certain graded modules of "socle elements" built from $\sE$. In this way we give a generalization of the Horrocks correspondence. We prove existence theorems where we construct vector bundles from these invariants and uniqueness theorems where we show that these data determine a bundle up to isomorphisms. The cases of the quadric hypersurface in $\mathbb P^{n+1}$ and the Veronese surface in $\mathbb P^5$ are considered in more detail.
Let ${\mathcal P}{\mathcal M}^α_s$ be a moduli space of stable parabolic vector bundles of rank $n \geq 2$ and fixed determinant of degree $d$ over a compact connected Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g(X) \geq 2$. If $g(X) = 2$, then we assume that $n > 2$. Let $m$ denote the greatest common divisor of $d$, $n$ and the dimensions of all the successive quotients of the quasi-parabolic filtrations. We prove that the cohomological Brauer group ${\rm Br}({\mathcal P}{\mathcal M}^α_s)$ is isomorphic to the cyclic group ${\mathbb Z}/ m{\mathbb Z}$. We also show that ${\rm Br}({\mathcal P}{\mathcal M}^…
In this paper we count the number of isomorphism classes of geometrically indecomposable quasi-parabolic structures of a given type on a given vector bundle on the projective line over a finite field. We give a conjectural cohomological interpretation for this counting using the moduli space of Higgs fields on the given vector bundle over the complex projective line with prescribed residues. We prove a certain number of results which bring evidences to the main conjecture. We detail the case of rank 2 vector bundles.
The primary goal of this paper is to systematically exploit the method of Deligne-Illusie to obtain Kodaira type vanishing theorems for vector bundles and more generally coherent sheaves on algebraic varieties. The key idea is to introduce a number which provides a cohomological measure of the positivity of a coherent sheaf called the Frobenius or F-amplitude. As the terminology indicates, the definition is most natural over a field of positive characteristic, however it can be forced into characteristic 0 by standard tricks. The F-amplitude enters into the statement of the basic vanishing the…
This paper begins with a description of cohomological invariants of non-degenerate quadric bundles, in terms of the cohomology rings of the classifying spaces of the general orthogonal groups. Following this, the Main Theorem of the paper determines the behavior of these invariants under the Gysin boundary map, when a quadric bundle degenerates over a divisor.
We study twisted vector bundles of infinite rank on gerbes, giving a new spin on Grothendieck's famous problem on the equality of the Brauer group and cohomological Brauer group. We show that the relaxed version of the question has an affirmative answer in many, but not all, cases, including for any algebraic space with the resolution property and any algebraic space obtained by pinching two closed subschemes of a projective scheme. We also discuss some possible theories of infinite rank Azumaya algebras, consider a new class of "very positive" infinite rank vector bundles on projective variet…
If V is a bundle of Tate vector spaces over a base B, its determinantal gerbe has a class C_1(V) in the second cohomology group of the sheaf of invertible functions which can be seen as the Deligne cohomology H^3(B, Z(2)). An example of such a "Tate bundle" can be obtained from a finite rank vector bundle E on the product of B and a punctured formal disk. Our main result identifies the corresponding C_1(V) with the cohomological direct image of ch_2(E), the second Chern character of E. It can be seen as a "local" version of the Riemann-Roch-Grothendieck theorem for a family of curves. This the…
We study the moduli spaces which classify smooth surfaces along with a complex line bundle. There are homological stability and Madsen--Weiss type results for these spaces (mostly due to Cohen and Madsen), and we discuss the cohomological calculations which may be deduced from them. We then relate these spaces to (a generalisation of) Kawazumi's extended mapping class groups, and hence deduce cohomological information about these. Finally, we relate these results to complex algebraic geometry. We construct a holomorphic stack classifying families of Riemann surfaces equipped with a fibrewise h…
We study in this paper a new family of stable algebraic symplectic vector bundles of rank $ 2n $ on the complex projective space $P^{2n+1}$ whose classical null correlation bundles belongs. We show that these bundles are invariant under a miniversal deformation. We also study the sufficient cohomological conditions for a symplectic vector bundle on a projective variety to be stable.
For a local complete intersection subvariety $X=V({\mathcal I})$ in ${\mathbb P}^n$ over a field of characteristic zero, we show that, in cohomological degrees smaller than the codimension of the singular locus of $X$, the cohomology of vector bundles on the formal completion of ${\mathbb P}^n$ along $X$ can be effectively computed as the cohomology on any sufficiently high thickening $X_t=V({\mathcal I^t})$; the main ingredient here is a positivity result for the normal bundle of $X$. Furthermore, we show that the Kodaira vanishing theorem holds for all thickenings $X_t$ in the same range of …
We compute the (stable) étale cohomology of $\mathrm{Hom}_{n}(C, \mathcal{P}(\vecλ))$, the moduli stack of degree $n$ morphisms from a smooth projective curve $C$ to the weighted projective stack $\mathcal{P}(\vecλ)$, the latter being a stacky quotient defined by $\mathcal{P}(\vecλ) := \left[\mathbb{A}^N-\{0\}/\mathbb{G}_m\right]$, where $\mathbb{G}_m$ acts by weights $\vecλ = (λ_0, \cdots, λ_N) \in \mathbb{Z}^N_{+}$. Our key ingredient is formulating and proving the étale cohomological descent over the category $ΔS$, the symmetric (semi)simplicial category. An immediate arithmetic consequence…
