We investigate the growth of the Nevanlinna Characteristic of f(z+η) for a fixed ηin this paper. In particular, we obtain a precise asymptotic relation between T(r,f(z+η) and T(r,f), which is only true for finite order meromorphic functions. We have also obtained the proximity function and pointwise estimates of f(z+η)/f(z) which is a version of discrete analogue of the logarithmic derivative of f(z). We apply these results to give growth estimates of meromorphic solutions to higher order linear difference equations. This also solves an old problem of Whittaker concerning a first order difference equation. We show by giving a number of examples that all these results are best possible in certain senses. Finally, we give a direct proof of a result by Ablowitz, Halburd and Herbst.
By extending the idea of a difference operator with a fixed step to varying-steps difference operators, we have established a difference Nevanlinna theory for meromorphic functions with the steps tending to zero (vanishing period) and a difference Nevanlinna theory for finite order meromorphic functions with the steps tending to infinity (infinite period) in this paper. We can recover the classical little Picard theorem from the vanishing period theory, but we require additional finite order growth restriction for meromorphic functions from the infinite period theory. Then we give some applica…
This paper establishes a version of Nevanlinna theory based on Askey-Wilson divided difference operator for meromorphic functions of finite logarithmic order in the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$. A second main theorem that we have derived allows us to define an Askey-Wilson type Nevanlinna deficiency which gives a new interpretation that one should regard many important infinite products arising from the study of basic hypergeometric series as zero/pole-scarce. That is, their zeros/poles are indeed deficient in the sense of difference Nevanlinna theory. A natural consequence is a version of Askey…
This paper establishes a version of Nevanlinna theory based on Jackson difference operator $D_{q}f(z)=\frac{f(qz)-f(z)}{qz-z}$ for meromorphic functions of zero order in the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$. We give the logarithmic difference lemma, the second fundamental theorem, the defect relation, Picard theorem and five-value theorem in sense of Jackson $q$-difference operator. By using this theory, we investigate the growth of entire solutions of linear Jackson $q$-difference equations $D^{k}_{q}f(z)+A(z)f(z)=0$ with meromorphic coefficient $A,$ where $D^k_q$ is Jackson $k$-th order difference…
Let $U\not\equiv \pm\infty$ be a $δ$-subharmonic function on a closed disc of radius $R$ centered at zero. In the previous two parts of our paper, we obtained general and explicit estimates of the integral of the positive part of the radial maximum growth characteristic ${\mathsf M}_U(t):= \sup\bigl\{U(z)\bigm| |z|=r\bigr\}$ over the increasing integration function $m$ on the segment $[0, r]\subset [0,R)$ through the difference characteristic of Nevanlinna and the quantities associated with the integration function $m$. The third part of our paper contains estimates of these quantities in term…
This paper consists of three parts. First, we give so far the best condition under which the shift invariance of the counting function, and of the characteristic of a subharmonic function, holds. Second, a difference analogue of logarithmic derivative of a $δ$-subharmonic function is established allowing the case of hyper-order equal to one and minimal hyper-type, which improves the condition of the hyper-order less than one. Finally, we make a careful discussion of a well-known difference equation and give out the possible forms of the equation under a growth condition for the solutions.
Let $U\not\equiv \pm\infty$ be the difference of subharmonic functions, i.e., a $δ$-subharmonic function, on a closed disc of radius $R$ centered at zero. In the preceding first part of our paper, we obtained general estimates for the integral of the positive part of the radial maximum growth characteristic ${\mathsf M}_U(t):=\sup\bigl\{U(z)\bigm| |z|=r\bigr\}$ over the increasing integration function $m$ on the segment $[0, r]$ via the Nevanlinna difference characteristic and the modulus of continuity of the function $m$. The second part of the work gives an explicit view for such estimates, …
Let $f$ be a meromorphic function on the complex plane $\mathbb C$ with the maximum function of its modulus $M(r,f)$ on circles centered at zero of radius $r$. A number of classical, well-known and widely used results allow us to estimate from above the integrals of the positive part of the logarithm $\ln^+M(t,f)$ over subsets of $E\subset [0,r]$ via the Nevanlinna characteristic $T(r,f)$ and the linear Lebesgue measure of the set $E$. The paper gives similar estimates for the Lebesgue-Stieltjes integrals of $\ln^+M (t,f)$ over the increasing integration function of $m$. The main part of the p…
Sitting at the top level of the Askey-scheme, Wilson polynomials are regarded as the most general hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials. Instead of a differential equation, they satisfy a second order Sturm-Liouville type difference equation in terms of the Wilson divided-difference operator. This suggests that in order to better understand the distinctive properties of Wilson polynomials and related topics, one should use a function theory that is more natural with respect to the Wilson operator. Inspired by the recent work of Halburd and Korhonen, we establish a full-fledged Nevanlinna theor…
We obtain new integral inequalities for the integrals of the difference of subharmonic functions in measure through their Nevanlinna characteristic and some functional characteristic of the measure. These results are new also for meromorphic functions. Let us illustrate the main result for the case of a meromorphic function. We denote by $D_z(r)$ a closed disc of radius $r$ centered at $z$ in the complex plane $\mathbb C$. Let $μ\geq 0$ be a Borel measure on $D_0(r)$, and $M:=μ(D_0(r))<+\infty$. The modulus of continuity of measure $μ$ is the function $h(t):=\sup_{z\in \mathbb C}μ(D_z(t)), \qu…
We show that a discrete sequence $Λ$ of the unit disk is the union of $n$ interpolating sequences for the Nevanlinna class $N$ if and only if the trace of $N$ on $Λ$ coincides with the space of functions on $Λ$ for which the divided differences of order $n - 1$ are uniformly controlled by a positive harmonic function.
We introduce Nevanlinna classes associated to non radial weights in the unit disc in the complex plane and we get Blaschke type theorems relative to these classes by use of several complex variables methods. This gives alternative proofs and improve some results of Boritchev, Golinski and Kupin useful, in particular, for the study of eigenvalues of non self adjoint Schrödinger operators.
We introduce Nevanlinna classes of holomorphic functions associated to a closed set on the boundary of the unit disc in the complex plane and we get Blaschke type theorems relative to these classes by use of several complex variables methods. This gives alternative proofs of some results of Favorov \& Golinskii, useful, in particular, for the study of eigenvalues of non self adjoint Schr{ö}dinger operators.
In this paper, we prove some fundamental theorems for holomorphic curves on angular domain intersecting a hypersurface, finite set of fixed hyperplanes in general position and finite set of fixed hypersurfaces in general position on complex projective variety with the level of truncation. As applications of the second main theorems for an angle, we will discuss the uniqueness problem of holomorphic curves in an angle instead of the whole complex plane. Detail, we establish a result for uniqueness problem of holomorphic curve by inverse image of a hypersurface. In my knowledge, this is the firs…
In this paper, we mainly propose improvements of the logarithmic difference lemma for meromorphic functions in several complex variables, and then investigate meromorphic solutions of partial difference equations from the viewpoint of Nevanlinna theory.
Using Nevanlinna's value distribution theory and the complex difference theory , the existence of the finite order of the entire solutions of the Fermat type of the complex differential-difference equation and the systems of complex differential-difference equations are investigated, and obtained some results, which extends Liu and Gao's results.
We demonstrate a strong form of Nevanlinna's Second Main Theorem for solutions to difference equations f(z+1)=R(z, f(z)), with the coefficients of R growing slowly relative to f, and R of degree at least 2 in the second coordinate.
In this paper, we give some extension of fundamental theorems in Nevanlinna - Cartan theory for holomorphic curve on M punctured complex planes. As an application, we establish a result for uniqueness problem of holomorphic curve by inverse image of a hypersurface, it is improvement of some results before [8, 14] in this trend.
The maximum of the modulus of a meromorphic function cannot be restricted from above by the Nevanlinna characteristic of this meromorphic function. But integrals from the logarithm of the module of a meromorphic function allow similar restrictions from above. This is illustrated by one of the important theorems of Rolf Nevanlinna in the classical monograph by A.A. Goldberg and I.V. Ostrovskii on meromorphic functions, as well as by the Edrei-Fuchs Lemma on small arcs and its versions for small intervals in articles by A.F. Grishin, M.L. Sodin, T.I. Malyutina. Similar results for integrals of d…
We extend the study of the Pick class, the set of complex analytic functions taking the upper half plane into itself, to the noncommutative setting. R. Nevanlinna showed that elements of the Pick class have certain integral representations which reflect their asymptotic behavior at infinity. Loewner connected the Pick class to matrix monotone functions. We generalize the Nevanlinna representation theorems and Loewner's theorem on matrix monotone functions to the free Pick class, the collection of functions that map tuples of matrices with positive imaginary part into the matrices with positive…
It is shown that the difference equation \begin{equation}\label{abseq} (Δf(z))^2=A(z)(f(z)f(z+1)-B(z)), \qquad\qquad (1) \end{equation} where $A(z)$ and $B(z)$ are meromorphic functions, possesses a continuous limit to the differential equation \begin{equation}\label{abseq2} (w')^2=A(z)(w^2-1),\qquad\qquad (2) \end{equation} which extends to solutions in certain cases. In addition, if (1) possesses two distinct transcendental meromorphic solutions, it is shown that these solutions satisfy an algebraic relation, and that their growth behaviors are almost same in the sense of Nevanlinna under so…
There are ten chapters in this dissertation, which focuses on nine contents: growth estimates for a class of subharmonic functions in the half plane; growth estimates for a class of subharmonic functions in the half space; a generalization of harmonic majorants; properties of limit for Poisson integral; a lower bound for a class of harmonic functions in the half space; the Carleman formula of subharmonic functions in the half space; a generalization of the Nevanlinna formula for analytic functions in the right half plane; integral representations of harmonic functions in the half plane; integr…
The classical result of Nevanlinna states that two nonconstant meromorphic functions on the complex plane having the same images for five distinct values must be identically equal to each other. In this paper, we give a similar uniqueness theorem for the Gauss maps of complete minimal surfaces in Euclidean four-space.
Additional integral inequalities are obtained for integrals of the differences of subharmonic functions by Borel measures on balls in a multidimensional Euclidean space. These integrals are still estimated from above through the Nevanlinna characteristic and various characteristics of the Borel measure and its support. All the results are also new for logarithms of modules of meromorphic functions on discs in the complex plane. Integration by Borel measures with a support on fractal sets is allowed, and estimates in these cases are given by the Hausdorff measure and the Hausdorff content for t…
Given any infinite tree in the plane satisfying certain topological conditions, we construct an entire function $f$ with only two critical values $\pm 1$ and no asymptotic values such that $f^{-1}([-1,1])$ is ambiently homeomorphic to the given tree. This can be viewed as a generalization of a result of Grothendieck to the case of infinite trees. Moreover, a similar idea leads to a new proof of a result of Nevanlinna and Elfving.
We consider a problem of whether a property of holomorphic curves on a subset $X$ of the complex plane can be extended to the whole complex plane. In this paper, the property we consider is uniqueness of holomorphic curves. We introduce the propagation set. Simply speaking, $X$ is a propagation set if linear relation of holomorphic curves on the part of preimage of hyperplanes contained in $X$ can be extended to the whole complex plane. If the holomorphic curves are of infinite order, we prove the existence of a propagation set which is the union of a sequence of disks (In fact, the method app…
For two meromorphic functions $ f $ and $ g $, the equation $ f^m+g^m=1 $ can be regarded as Fermat-type equations. Using Nevanlinna theory for meromorphic functions in several complex variables, the main purpose of this paper is to investigate the properties of the transcendental entire solutions of Fermat-type difference and partial differential-difference equations in $ \mathbb{C}^n $. In addition, we find the precise form of the transcendental entire solutions in $ \mathbb{C}^2 $ with finite order of the Fermat-type partial differential-difference equation $$\left(\frac{\partial f(z_1,z_2)…
Nevanlinna's second main theorem is a far-reaching generalisation of Picard's Theorem concerning the value distribution of an arbitrary meromorphic function f. The theorem takes the form of an inequality containing a ramification term in which the zeros and poles of the derivative f' appear. In this paper we show that a similar result holds for special subfields of meromorphic functions where the derivative is replaced by a more general linear operator, such as higher-order differential operators and differential-difference operators. We subsequently derive generalisations of Picard's Theorem …
Let $E$ be a measurable subset in a segment $[0,r]$ in the positive part of the real axis in the complex plane, and $U=u-v$ be the difference of subharmonic functions $u\not\equiv -\infty$ and $v\not\equiv-\infty$ on the complex plane. An integral of the maximum on circles centered at zero of $U^+:=\sup\{0,U\} $ or $|u|$ over $E$ with a function-multiplier $g\in L^p(E)$ in the integrand is estimated, respectively, in terms of the characteristic function $T_U$ of $U$ or the maximum of $u$ on circles centered at zero, and also in terms of the linear Lebesgue measure of $E$ and the $ L^p$-norm of…
We introduce a mean counting function for Dirichlet series, which plays the same role in the function theory of Hardy spaces of Dirichlet series as the Nevanlinna counting function does in the classical theory. The existence of the mean counting function is related to Jessen and Tornehave's resolution of the Lagrange mean motion problem. We use the mean counting function to describe all compact composition operators with Dirichlet series symbols on the Hardy--Hilbert space of Dirichlet series, thus resolving a problem which has been open since the bounded composition operators were described b…
Let $\mathbb C$ be the complex plane, $E$ be a measurable subset in a segment $[0, R]$ of the positive semiaxis $\mathbb R^+$, $u\not\equiv -\infty$ be a subharmonic function on $\mathbb C$. The main result of this article is an upper estimate of the integral of the module $|u|$ over a subset of $E$ through the maximum of the function $u$ on a circle of radius $R$ centered at zero and a linear Lebesgue measure of subset $E$. Our result develops one of the classical theorems of R. Nevanlinna in the case of $E=[0, R]$ and versions of so-called Small Arcs Lemma by Edrei-Fuchs for small intervals …
Let $ι: \C^2 \hookrightarrow S$ be a compactification of the two dimensional complex space $\C^2$. By making use of Nevanlinna theoretic methods and the classification of compact complex surfaces K. Kodaira proved in 1971 (\cite{ko71}) that $S$ is a rational surface. Here we deal with a more general meromorphic map $f: \C^n \to X$ into a compact complex manifold $X$ of dimension $n$, whose differential $df$ has generically rank $n$. Let $ρ_f$ denote the order of $f$. We will prove that if $ρ_f<2$, then every global symmetric holomorphic tensor must vanish; in particular, {\it if $\dim X=2$ and…
