A crucial ingredient in the recent discovery by Ablowitz, Halburd, Herbst and Korhonen \cite{AHH}, \cite {HK-2} that a connection exists between discrete Painlevé equations and (finite order) Nevanlinna theory is an estimate of the integrated average of $\log^+|f(z+1)/f(z)|$ on $|z|=r$. We obtained essentially the same estimate in our previous paper \cite{CF} independent of Halburd et al \cite{HK-1}. We continue our study in this paper by establishing complete asymptotic relations amongst the logarithmic differences, difference quotients and logarithmic derivatives for finite order meromorphic functions. In addition to the potential applications of our new estimates in integrable systems, they are also of independent interest. In particular, our findings show that there are marked differences between the growth of meromorphic functions with Nevanlinna order smaller and greater than one. We have established a "difference" analogue of the classical Wiman-Valiron type estimates for meromorphic functions with order less than one, which allow us to prove all entire solutions of linear difference equations (with polynomial coefficients) of order less than one must have positive rational order of growth. We have also established that any entire solution to a first order algebraic difference equation (with polynomial coefficients) must have a positive order of growth, which is a "difference" analogue of a classical result of Pólya.
In this note it is shown that two key results on transcendental singularities for meromorphic functions of finite lower order have refinements which hold under the weaker hypothesis that the logarithmic derivative has finite lower order.
The paper gives a precise asymptotic relation between higher order logarithmic difference and logarithmic derivatives for meromorphic functions with order strictly less then one. This allows us to formulate a useful Wiman-Valiron type estimate for logarithmic difference of meromorphic functions of small order. We then apply this estimate to prove a classical analogue of Valiron about entire solutions to linear differential equations with polynomials coefficients for linear difference equations.
The classical representation problem for a meromorphic function f in C^n, n>=1, consists in representing f as the quotient f=g/h of two entire functions g and h, each with logarithm of modulus majorized by a function as close as possible to the Nevanlinna characteristic. Here we introduce generalizations of the Nevanlinna characteristic and give a short survey of classical and recent results on the representation of a meromorphic function in terms such characteristics. When f has a finite lower order, the Paley problem on best possible estimates of the growth of entire functions g and h in the…
In this article, we study the growth of meromorphic solutions of linear delay-differential equation of the form \begin{equation*} \sum_{i=0}^{n}\sum_{j=0}^{m}A_{ij}(z)f^{(j)}(z+c_{i})=F(z), \end{equation*}% where $A_{ij}(z)$ $(i=0,1,\ldots ,n,j=0,1,\ldots ,m,n,m\in \mathbb{N})$ and $% F(z)$ are meromorphic of finite logarithmic order, $c_{i}(i=0,\ldots ,n)$ are distinct non-zero complex constants. We extend those results obtained recently by Chen and Zheng, Bellaama and Bela\"ıdi to the logarithmic lower order.
Using mainly tools from [B.13] and [B.15] we give a necessary and sufficient condition in order that a holomorphic action of a connected complex Lie group $G$ on a reduced complex space $X$ admits a strongly quasi-proper meromorphic quotient. We apply this characterization to obtain a result which assert that, when $G = K.B$ \ with $B$ a closed complex subgroup of $G$ and $K$ a real compact subgroup of $G$, the existence of a strongly quasi-proper meromorphic quotient for the $B-$action implies, assuming moreover that there exists a $G-$invariant Zariski open dense subset in $X$ which is good …
Segre sets are superfluous to verify that quotients of formal holomorphic maps that are real on a minimal generic submanifold of positive CR dimension must necessarily be constant.
Analogues of the key results of Wiman-Valiron theory are proved for a class of functions meromorphic in the unit disc, based on an approach developed by Bergweiler, Rippon and Stallard for the plane setting. The results give local approximations for the function and its logarithmic derivative and, in the case of positive order of growth, for higher order logarithmic derivatives as well.
In this paper, we mainly propose improvements of the logarithmic difference lemma for meromorphic functions in several complex variables, and then investigate meromorphic solutions of partial difference equations from the viewpoint of Nevanlinna theory.
We improve existing lower bounds of the hyperbolic dimension for meromophic functions that have a logarithmic tract Ω which is a Hölder domain. These bounds are given in terms of the fractal behavior, measured with integral means, of the boundary of Ω at infinity.
We show that if a meromorphic function has a direct singularity over infinity, then the escaping set has an unbounded component and the intersection of the escaping set with the Julia set contains continua. This intersection has an unbounded component if and only if the function has no Baker wandering domains. We also give estimates of the Hausdorff dimension and the upper box dimension of the Julia set of a meromorphic function with a logarithmic singularity over infinity. The above theorems are deduced from more general results concerning functions which have "direct or logarithmic tracts", …
The growth of meromorphic solutions of linear difference equations containing Askey-Wilson divided difference operators is estimated. The $φ$-order is used as a general growth indicator, which covers the growth spectrum between the logarithmic order $ρ_{\log}(f)$ and the classical order $ρ(f)$ of a meromorphic function $f$.
It is proved that for any positive number $λ$, $1<λ<2$; there exists a meromorphic function $f$ with logarithmic order $λ$= $\displaystyle\limsup_{r\to+\infty}\frac{\log T(r,f)}{\log\log r}$ such that $f$ has no Julia directions, where $T(r,f)$ is the Nevanlinna characteristic function of $f$. (Note that A. Ostrowski has proved a {\it similar} result for $λ=2$ in 1926.)
In this paper we develop fundamental tools and methods to study meromorphic functions in an equivariant setup. As our main result we construct quotients of Rosenlicht-type for Stein spaces acted upon holomorphically by complex-reductive Lie groups and their algebraic subgroups. In particular, we show that in this setup invariant meromorphic functions separate orbits in general position. Applications to almost homogeneous spaces and principal orbit types are given. Furthermore, we use the main result to investigate the relation between holomorphic and meromorphic invariants for reductive group …
A proper or singular abelian mapping from $C^n$ to $\bar\C^n$ is parametrized by $n$ meromorphic functions with at most $2n$ periods. We develop the existence and structure theorems of the classical theory of an abelian mapping purely on the basis of its defining functional equation, the so-called algebraic addition theorem (AAT), with no appeal to any representation as quotients of theta functions. We offer two new proofs of the periodicity of a nonrational mapping admitting an AAT. We also prove by new arguments the existence of a rational group law on an associated algebraic variety, and th…
The $φ$-order was introduced in 2009 for meromorphic functions in the unit disc, and was used as a growth indicator for solutions of linear differential equations. In this paper, the properties of meromorphic functions in the complex plane are investigated in terms of the $φ$-order, which measures the growth of functions between the classical order and the logarithmic order. Several results on value distribution of meromorphic functions are discussed by using the $φ$-order and the $φ$-exponent of convergence. Instead of linear differential equations, the applications in the complex plane lie i…
Using a new Borel type growth lemma, we extend the difference analogue of the lemma on the logarithmic derivative due to Halburd and Korhonen to the case of meromorphic functions $f(z)$ such that $\log T(r,f)\leq r/(\log r)^{2+ν}$, $ν>0$, for all sufficiently large $r$. The method by Halburd and Korhonen implies an estimate for the lemma on difference quotients, where the exceptional set is of finite logarithmic measure. We show the necessity of this set by proving that it must be of infinite linear measure for meromorphic functions whose deficiency is dependent on the choice of the origin. In…
We give an alternative and simpler method for getting pointwise estimate of meromorphic solutions of homogeneous linear differential equations with coefficients meromorphic in a finite disk or in the open plane originally obtained by Hayman and the author. In particular, our estimates generally give better upper bounds for higher order derivatives of the meromorphic solutions under consideration, are valid, however, outside an exceptional set of finite logarithmic density. The estimates again show that the growth of meromorphic solutions with a positive deficiency at infinity can be estimated …
We study meromorphic functions in a strip almost periodic with respect to the spherical metric. Then we get a complete description of zeros and poles for this class of functions, find a condition for a meromorphic almost periodic function to be a quotient of two holomorphic almost periodic function, find a necessary and suficient condition for sum and product of almost periodic meromorphic functions to be almost periodic.
The Lemma on the Logarithmic Derivative of a meromorphic function has many applications in the study of meromorphic functions and ordinary differential equations. In this paper, a difference analogue of the Logarithmic Derivative Lemma is presented and then applied to prove a number of results on meromorphic solutions of complex difference equations. These results include a difference analogue of the Clunie Lemma, as well as other results on the value distribution of solutions.
In this paper, we study $q$-difference analogues of several central results in value distribution theory of several complex variables such as $q$-difference versions of the logarithmic derivative lemma, the second main theorem for hyperplanes and hypersurfaces, and a Picard type theorem. Moreover, the Tumura-Clunie theorem concerning partial $q$-difference polynomials is also obtained. Finally, we apply this theory to investigate the growth of meromorphic solutions of linear partial $q$-difference equations.
It is shown that if three distinct values of a meromorphic function f:C^n -> P^1 of hyper-order strictly less than 2/3 have forward invariant pre-images with respect to a translation t:C^n -> C^n, t(z)=z+c, then f is a periodic function with period c. This result can be seen as a generalization of M. Green's Picard-type theorem in the special case where the hyper-order of f is less than 2/3, since the empty pre-images of the usual Picard exceptional values are by definition always forward invariant. In addition, difference analogues of the lemma on the logarithmic derivative and of the second …
In this paper, we will give estimates for the logarithmic derivative $ \left\vert \frac{f^{\left( k\right) }\left( z\right) }{f\left( z\right) } \right\vert $ where $f$ is a meromorphic function in a region of the form $ D\left( 0,R\right) =\left\{ z\in \mathbb{C} :0<\left\vert z\right\vert <R\right\} .$ Some applications on the growth of solutions of linear differential equations near a singular point are given.
Using a `height-to-radical' identity, we define the archimedean contribution to the radical, $r_\arch$, and we give a new proof of the abc theorem for the field of meromorphic functions. The first step of the proof is completely formal and yields that the height is bounded by the radical, $h\leq r$, where $r=r_\na+r_\arch$ is the radical completed with the archimedean contribution. The second step is analytic in nature and uses the lemma on the logarithmic derivative to derive a bound for $r_\arch$.
This paper establishes a version of Nevanlinna theory based on Jackson difference operator $D_{q}f(z)=\frac{f(qz)-f(z)}{qz-z}$ for meromorphic functions of zero order in the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$. We give the logarithmic difference lemma, the second fundamental theorem, the defect relation, Picard theorem and five-value theorem in sense of Jackson $q$-difference operator. By using this theory, we investigate the growth of entire solutions of linear Jackson $q$-difference equations $D^{k}_{q}f(z)+A(z)f(z)=0$ with meromorphic coefficient $A,$ where $D^k_q$ is Jackson $k$-th order difference…
If the function $f$ is transcendental and meromorphic in the plane, and either $f$ has finitely many poles or its inverse function has a logarithmic singularity over infinity, then the equation $\dot z = f(z)$ has infinitely many trajectories tending to infinity in finite increasing time
On The Relationship Between The Logarithmic Lower Order of Coefficients and The Growth of Solutions of Complex Linear Differential Equations in $\overline{\mathbb{C}}\setminus\{z_{0}\}$
Sitting at the top level of the Askey-scheme, Wilson polynomials are regarded as the most general hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials. Instead of a differential equation, they satisfy a second order Sturm-Liouville type difference equation in terms of the Wilson divided-difference operator. This suggests that in order to better understand the distinctive properties of Wilson polynomials and related topics, one should use a function theory that is more natural with respect to the Wilson operator. Inspired by the recent work of Halburd and Korhonen, we establish a full-fledged Nevanlinna theor…
Balayage of measures with respect to classes of all subharmonic or harmonic functions on an open set of a plane or finite-dimensional Euclidean space is one of the main objects of potential theory and its applications to the complex analysis. For a class $H$ of functions on $O$, a measure $ω$ on $O$ is a balayage of a measure $δ$ on $O$ with respect to this class $H$ if $\int_O h\, d δ\leq \int_O h\, dω$ for each $h\in H$. In our previous works we used this concept to study envelopes relative to classes of subharmonic and harmonic functions and apply them to describe zero sets of holomorphic f…
We investigate the growth of the Nevanlinna Characteristic of f(z+η) for a fixed ηin this paper. In particular, we obtain a precise asymptotic relation between T(r,f(z+η) and T(r,f), which is only true for finite order meromorphic functions. We have also obtained the proximity function and pointwise estimates of f(z+η)/f(z) which is a version of discrete analogue of the logarithmic derivative of f(z). We apply these results to give growth estimates of meromorphic solutions to higher order linear difference equations. This also solves an old problem of Whittaker concerning a first order differe…
We consider the Hodge filtration on the sheaf of meromorphic functions along free divisors for which the logarithmic comparison theorem holds. We describe the Hodge filtration steps as submodules of the order filtration on a cyclic presentation in terms of a special factor of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial of the divisor and we conjecture a bound for the generating level of the Hodge filtration. Finally, we develop an algorithm to compute Hodge ideals of such divisors and we apply it to some examples.
