For an elliptic curve $E$ over $\ratq$ and an integer $r$ let $π_E^r(x)$ be the number of primes $p\le x$ of good reduction such that the trace of the Frobenius morphism of $E/\fie_p$ equals $r$. We consider the quantity $π_E^r(x)$ on average over certain sets of elliptic curves. More in particular, we establish the following: If $A,B>x^{1/2+ε}$ and $AB>x^{3/2+ε}$, then the arithmetic mean of $π_E^r(x)$ over all elliptic curves $E$ : $y^2=x^3+ax+b$ with $a,b\in \intz$, $|a|\le A$ and $|b|\le B$ is $\sim C_r\sqrt{x}/\log x$, where $C_r$ is some constant depending on $r$. This improves a result of C. David and F. Pappalardi. Moreover, we establish an ``almost-all'' result on $π_E^r(x)$.
We obtain distribution results for traces of Frobenius for various families of elliptic curves with respect to the Lang-Trotter conjecture, extremal primes, and the central limit theorem. This includes some generalisations and bounds related to the work of Sha-Shparlinski on the average Lang-Trotter conjecture for single-parametric families of elliptic curves and the work of various authors on the trace of Frobenius for primes in congruence classes. Some results are also obtained for modular forms.
For a non-CM elliptic curve $E$ defined over the rationals, Lang and Trotter made very deep conjectures concerning the number of primes $p\leq x$ for which $a_p(E)$ is a fixed integer (and for which the Frobenius field at $p$ is a fixed imaginary quadratic field). Under GRH, we use a smoothed version of the Chebotarev density theorem to improve the best known Lang-Trotter upper bounds of Murty, Murty and Saradha, and Cojocaru and David.
Following Lang and Trotter we describe a probabilistic model that predicts the distribution of primes $p$ with given Frobenius traces at $p$ for two fixed elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. In addition, we propose explicit Euler product representations for the constant in the predicted asymptotic formula and describe in detail the universal component of this constant. A new feature is that in some cases the $\ell$-adic limits determining the $\ell$-factors of the universal constant, unlike the Lang-Trotter conjecture for a single elliptic curve, do not stabilize. We also prove the conjecture o…
We prove that the set of Farey fractions of order $T$, that is, the set $\{α/β\in \Q : \gcd(α, β) = 1, 1 \le α, β\le T\}$, is uniformly distributed in residue classes modulo a prime $p$ provided $T \ge p^{1/2 +\eps}$ for any fixed $\eps>0$. We apply this to obtain upper bounds for the Lang--Trotter conjectures on Frobenius traces and Frobenius fields ``on average'' over a one-parametric family of elliptic curves.
Inspired by the work of Lang-Trotter on the densities of primes with fixed Frobenius traces for elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ and by the subsequent generalization of Cojocaru-Davis-Silverberg-Stange to generic abelian varieties, we study the analogous question for abelian surfaces isogenous to products of non-CM elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. We formulate the corresponding conjectural asymptotic, provide upper bounds, and explicitly compute (when the elliptic curves lie outside a thin set) the arithmetically significant constants appearing in the asymptotic. This allows us to p…
We obtain new results concerning Lang-Trotter conjecture on Frobenius traces and Frobenius fields over single and double parametric families of elliptic curves. We also obtain similar results with respect to the Sato-Tate conjecture. In particular, we improve a result of A.C. Cojocaru and the second author (2008) towards the Lang-Trotter conjecture on average for polynomially parameterized families of elliptic curves when the parameter runs through a set of rational numbers of bounded height. Some of the families we consider are much thinner than the ones previously studied.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over the rational numbers and $r$ a fixed integer. Using a probabilistic model consistent with the Chebotarev theorem for the division fields of $E$ and the Sato-Tate distribution, Lang and Trotter conjectured an asymptotic formula for the number of primes up to $x$ which have Frobenius trace equal to $r$, where $r$ is a {\it fixed} integer. However, as shown in this note, this asymptotic estimate cannot hold for {\it all} $r$ in the interval $|r|\le 2\sqrt{x}$ with a uniform bound for the error term, because an estimate of this kind would contradict the Ch…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}.$ Let $a_p$ denote the trace of the Frobenius endomorphism at a rational prime $p$. For a fixed integer $r,$ define the prime-counting function as $π_{E,r}(x):=\sum_{p\leq x,p\nmid Δ_E,a_p=r}1$. The Lang-Trotter Conjecture predicts that $$π_{E,r}(x)=C_{E,r}\cdot \frac{\sqrt{x}}{{\rm log}x}+o(\frac{\sqrt{x}}{{\rm log}x})$$ as $x\longrightarrow \infty,$ where $C_{E,r}$ is a specific non-negative constant. The Hardy-Littlewood Conjecture gives a similar asymptotic formula as above for the number of primes of the form $ax^2+bx+c$. We establish a relati…
We improve the Chebotarev variant of the Brun-Titchmarsh theorem proven by Lagarias, Montgomery, and Odlyzko using the log-free zero density estimate and zero repulsion phenomenon for Hecke L-functions that were recently proved by the authors. Our result produces an improvement for the best unconditional bounds toward two conjectures of Lang and Trotter regarding the distribution of traces of Frobenius for elliptic curves and holomorphic cuspidal modular forms. We also obtain new results on the distribution of primes represented by positive-definite integral binary quadratic forms.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $p$ be a prime of good reduction for $E$. Then, for a prime $p \neq \ell$, the Frobenius automorphism associated to $p$ (unique up to conjugation) acts on the $\ell$-adic Tate module of $E$. The characteristic polynomial of the Frobenius automorphism has rational integer coefficients and is independent of $\ell$. Its splitting field is called the Frobenius field of $E$ at $p$. Let $E_1$ and $E_2$ be two elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ that are non-isogenous over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ and also without complex multiplication over $\…
We construct infinitely ramified Galois representations $ρ$ such that the $a_l (ρ)$'s have distributions in contrast to the statements of Sato-Tate, Lang-Trotter and others. Using similar methods we deform a residual Galois representation for number fields and obtain an infinitely ramified representation with very large image, generalising a result of Ramakrishna.
We show that the reductions modulo primes $p\le x$ of the elliptic curve $$ Y^2 = X^3 + f(a)X + g(b), $$ behave as predicted by the Lang-Trotter and Sato-Tate conjectures, on average over integers $a \in [-A,A]$ and $b \in [-B,B]$ for $A$ and $B$ reasonably small compared to $x$, provided that $f(T), g(T) \in \Z[T]$ are not powers of another polynomial over $\Q$. For $f(T) = g(T) = T$ first results of this kind are due to E. Fouvry and M. R. Murty and have been further extended by other authors. Our technique is different from that of E. Fouvry and M. R. Murty which does not seem to work in th…
Let $A$ be a $g$-dimensional abelian variety over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose adelic Galois representation has open image in $\text{GSp}_{2g} \widehat{\mathbb{Z}}$. We investigate the endomorphism algebras $\text{End}(A_p) \otimes \mathbb{Q} = \mathbb{Q}( π_p )$ of the reduction of $A$ modulo primes $p$ at which this reduction is ordinary and simple. We obtain conditional and unconditional asymptotic upper bounds on the number of primes at which this "Frobenius field" is a specified number field and, when $A$ is two-dimensional, at which the Frobenius field contains a specified real quadratic number fi…
We compute the averages over elliptic curves of the constants occurring in the Lang-Trotter conjecture, the Koblitz conjecture, and the cyclicity conjecture. The results obtained confirm the consistency of these conjectures with the corresponding ``theorems on average'' obtained recently by various authors.
Silverman and Stange define the notion of an aliquot cycle of length L for a fixed elliptic curve E defined over the rational numbers, and conjecture an order of magnitude for the function which counts such aliquot cycles. In the present note, we combine heuristics of Lang-Trotter with those of Koblitz to refine their conjecture to a precise asymptotic formula by specifying the appropriate constant. We give a criterion for positivity of the conjectural constant, as well as some numerical evidence for our conjecture.
The effective version of Chebotarev's density theorem under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis and the Artin conjecture (cf. Iwaniec and Kowalski's Analytic Number Theory, 5.13) involves a numerical invariant of a subset $D$ of a finite group $G$ that we call the Littlewood Complexity of $D$. We study this invariant in detail. Using this study, and a new application of the large sieve, we give improved versions of two standard questions related to Chebotarev: the bound on the first prime in a Frobenian set, and the asymptotic of the set of primes with given Frobenius in an infinite Galois exte…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. In 1976, Lang and Trotter conjectured an asymptotic formula for the number $π_{E,r}(X)$ of primes $p \leq X$ of good reduction for which the Frobenius trace at $p$ associated to $E$ is equal to a given fixed integer $r$. We investigate elliptic curves $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ that have a missing Frobenius trace, i.e. for which the counting function $π_{E,r}(X)$ remains bounded as $X \rightarrow \infty$, for some $r \in \mathbb{Z}$. In particular, we classify all elliptic curves $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$ that have a missing Frobenius trace.
Let $K$ be a number field and $r$ an integer. Given an elliptic curve $E$, defined over $K$, we consider the problem of counting the number of degree two prime ideals of $K$ with trace of Frobenius equal to $r$. Under certain restrictions on $K$, we show that "on average" the number of such prime ideals with norm less than or equal to $x$ satisfies an asymptotic identity that is in accordance with standard heuristics. This work is related to the classical Lang-Trotter conjecture and extends the work of several authors.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over $\mathbb{Q}$ of dimension $g$ such that the image of its associated absolute Galois representation $ρ_A$ is open in $\operatorname{GSp}_{2g}(\hat{\mathbb{Z}})$. We investigate the arithmetic of the traces $a_{1, p}$ of the Frobenius at $p$ in $\operatorname{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ under $ρ_A$, modulo varying primes $p$. In particular, we obtain upper bounds for the counting function $\#\{p \leq x: a_{1, p} = t\}$ and we prove an Erdös-Kac type theorem for the number of prime factors of $a_{1, p}$. We also formulate a conjecture about the asymp…
We present several results related to statistics for elliptic curves over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$ as corollaries of a general theorem about averages of Euler products that we demonstrate. In this general framework, we can reprove known results such as the average Lang-Trotter conjecture, the average Koblitz conjecture, and the vertical Sato-Tate conjecture, even for very short intervals, not accessible by previous methods. We also compute statistics for new questions, such as the problem of amicable pairs and aliquot cycles, first introduced by Silverman and Stange. Our technique is rath…
Let $K$ be a fixed number field, assumed to be Galois over $\mathbb Q$. Let $r$ and $f$ be fixed integers with $f$ positive. Given an elliptic curve $E$, defined over $K$, we consider the problem of counting the number of degree $f$ prime ideals of $K$ with trace of Frobenius equal to $r$. Except in the case $f=2$, we show that "on average," the number of such prime ideals with norm less than or equal to $x$ satisfies an asymptotic identity that is in accordance with standard heuristics. This work is related to the classical Lang-Trotter conjecture and extends the work of several authors.
This is an informal paper presenting historical results around the recent paper of the author about Lang's Conjecture and torsion of elliptic curves. This paper also discusses a few aspects of the proof.
We first investigate two kinds of Fricke families consisting of Fricke functions and Siegel functions, respectively. And, in terms of their special values we generate ray class fields of imaginary quadratic fields, which is related to the Lang-Schertz conjecture.
The aim of this paper is to study a conjecture predicting a lower bound on the canonical height on abelian varieties, formulated by S. Lang and generalized by J. H. Silverman. We give here an asymptotic result on the height of Heegner points on the modular jacobian $J_{0}(N)$, and we derive non-trivial remarks about the conjecture.
We adopt a statistical point of view on the conjecture of Lang which predicts a lower bound for the canonical height of non-torsion rational points on elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. More specifically, we prove that among the family of all elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ and having positive rank, there is a density one subfamily of curves which satisfy a strong form of Lang's conjecture.
We give an overview of some landmark theorems and recent conjectures in Diophantine Geometry. In the elliptic case, we prove some new bounds for torsion anomalous points and we clarify the implications of several height bounds on the effective Mordell-Lang Conjecture. We also explicitly bound the Neron-Tate height of the rational points of a family of curves of increasing genus.

We establish the Langlands-Shahidi method over a global field of characteristic p. We then focus on the unitary groups and prove global and local Langlands functoriality to general linear groups for generic representations. Main applications are to the Ramanujan Conjecture and Riemann Hypothesis.
We present topics in the Langlands Program to graduate students and a wider mathematically mature audience. We study both global and local aspects in characteristic zero as well as characteristic $p$. We look at modern approaches to the generalized Ramanujan conjecture, which is an open problem over number fields, and present known cases over function fields. In particular, we study automorphic $L$-functions via the Langlands-Shahidi method. Hopefully, our approach to the Langlands Program can help guide the interested reader into an exciting field of mathematical research.
For $E_{b}: y^{2}=x^{3}+b$, we establish Lang's conjecture on a lower bound for the canonical height of non-torsion points along with upper and lower bounds for the difference between the canonical and logarithmic height. In many cases, our results are actually best-possible.
Let H be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, and let G be an abstract group. In this note we show that every homomorphism from the Grothendieck semiring of H to that of G which maps irreducible representations to irreducibles, comes from a group homomorphism from G to H. We also connect this result with the Langlands conjectures.
This paper focuses on the proof of Serge Lang's Heights Conjecture in a form that is completely effective. As a complementary result the author provides a new proof of Mazur-Merel theorem about a bound for the torsion of elliptic curves in terms of the degree of the ground field and improves the known result by providing a small polynomial bound in terms of this degree. (Submitted)
For elliptic curves given by the equation $E_{a}: y^{2}=x^{3}+ax$, we establish the best-possible version of Lang's conjecture on the lower bound of the canonical height of non-torsion points along with best-possible upper and lower bounds for the difference between the canonical and logarithmic height.
We prove a quantitative partial result in support of the Dynamical Mordell-Lang Conjecture (also known as the DML conjecture) in positive characteristic. More precisely, we show the following: given a field $K$ of characteristic $p$, given a semiabelian variety $X$ defined over a finite subfield of $K$ and endowed with a regular self-map $Φ:X \longrightarrow X$ defined over $K$, given a point $α\in X(K)$ and a subvariety $V\subseteq X$, then the set of all non-negative integers $n$ such that $Φ^n(α)\in V(K)$ is a union of finitely many arithmetic progressions along with a subset $S$ with the p…
Let $X$ be a genus $d$ curve with $d\geq 2$ defined over a global function field $K$ of characteristic $p>0$ with $p>2d+1$. Suppose $X$ non-isotrivial. Let $Γ$ be a sub-group of $J(K_s)$, where $J$ is the jacobian of $X$ and $K_s$ is a separable closure of $K$, verifying $Γ/p Γ$ finite. Then one shows that $X\cap Γ$ has finite cardinal and one provides an explicit upper bound. This generalizes a result of Buium and Voloch.
It is known that Szpiro's conjecture, or equivalently the ABC-conjecture, implies Lang's conjecture giving a uniform lower bound for the canonical height of nontorsion points on elliptic curves. In this note we show that a significantly weaker version of Szpiro's conjecture, which we call "prime-depleted," suffices to prove Lang's conjecture.
We state an improved version of the conjecture of Langlands and Rapoport, and we prove the conjecture for a large class of Shimura varieties. In particular, we obtain the first proof of the (original) conjecture for Shimura varieties of PEL-type.
The strong Bombieri-Lang conjecture postulates that, for every variety $X$ of general type over a field $k$ finitely generated over $\mathbb{Q}$, there exists an open subset $U\subset X$ such that $U(K)$ is finite for every finitely generated extension $K/k$. The weak Bombieri-Lang conjecture postulates that, for every positive dimensional variety $X$ of general type over a field $k$ finitely generated over $\mathbb{Q}$, the rational points $X(k)$ are not dense. Furthermore, Lang conjectured that every variety of general type $X$ over a field of characteristic $0$ contains an open subset $U\su…
We prove a dynamical version of the Mordell-Lang conjecture in the context of Drinfeld modules. We use analytic methods similar to the ones employed by Skolem, Chabauty, and Coleman for studying diophantine equations.
We formulate a conjecture for semiabelian varieties A over number fields that includes both the Mordell-Lang conjecture (now proven) and the Bogomolov conjecture. We prove the "Mordellic" (finitely generated) part of the conjecture when A is isogenous to the product of an abelian variety and a torus. The proof makes use of the Mordell-Lang conjecture, the Bogomolov conjecture, and an equidistribution theorem.
The generalized Mordell-Lang conjecture (GML) is the statement that the irreducible components of the Zariski closure of a subset of a group of finite rank inside a semi-abelian variety are translates of closed algebraic subgroups. M. McQuillan gave a proof of this statement. We revisit his proof, indicating some simplifications. This text contains a complete elementary proof of the fact that (GML) for groups of torsion points (= generalized Manin-Mumford conjecture), together with (GML) for finitely generated groups imply the full generalized Mordell-Lang conjecture.
The dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture concerns the structure of the intersection of an orbit in an algebraic dynamical system and an algebraic variety. In this paper, we bound the size of this intersection for various cases when it is finite.
These notes grew out of a mini-course given from May 13th to May 17th at UQAM in Montreal during a workshop on Diophantine Approximation and Value Distribution Theory. We start with an overview of Lang-Vojta's conjectures on pseudo-hyperbolic projective varieties. These conjectures relate various different notions of hyperbolicity. We begin with Brody hyperbolicity and discuss conjecturally related notions of hyperbolicity in arithmetic geometry and algebraic geometry in subsequent sections. We slowly work our way towards the most general version of Lang-Vojta's conjectures and provide a summa…
In "Mordell-Lang plus Bogomolov", we formulated a conjecture combining the Mordell-Lang conjecture (now proven) and the Bogomolov conjecture, and proved the Mordellic part when A is almost split (i.e., isogenous to the product of an abelian variety and a torus). Here we prove that the full conjecture would follow from the Bogomolov conjecture and an equidistribution result for general semiabelian varieties. These assumptions have been proved when A is almost split, so the conjecture is completely proven in that case.
