We prove an effective version of a theorem of Dufresnoy: For any set of 2n+1 hyperplanes in general position in n-dimensional complex projective space, we find an explicit constant K such that for every holomorphic map f from the unit disc to the complement of these hyperplanes, the derivative of f at the origin measured with respect to the Fubuni-Study metric is bouned above by K. This result gives an explicit lower bound on the Royden function, i.e., the ratio of the Kobayashi metric on the hyperplane complement to the Fubini-Study metric. Our estimate is based on the potential-theoretic method of Eremenko and Sodin.
We prove some generalizations and analogies of Harnack inequalities for pluriharmonic, holomorphic and "almost holomorphic" functions. The results are applied to the proving of smoothness properties of holomorphic motions over almost complex manifolds.
In this paper, we generalize the Kobayashi pseudo-distance to complex manifolds which admit holomorphic bracket generating distributions. The generalization is based on Chow's theorem in sub-Riemannian geometry. Let G be a linear semisimple Lie group. For a complex $G$-homogeneous manifold M with a G-invariant holomorphic bracket generating distribution D, we prove that (M,D) is Kobayashi hyperbolic if and only if the universal covering of M is a canonical flag domain and the induced distribution is the superhorizontal distribution.
The Schwarz lemma as one of the most influential results in complex analysis and it has a great impact to the development of several research fields, such as geometric function theory, hyperbolic geometry, complex dynamical systems, and theory of quasi-conformal mappings. In this note we mainly consider various version of Schwarz lemma and its relatives related to holomorphic functions including several variables.
In this paper we study the following "slice rigidity property": given two Kobayashi complete hyperbolic manifolds $M, N$ and a collection of complex geodesics $\mathcal F$ of $M$, when is it true that every holomorphic map $F:M\to N$ which maps isometrically every complex geodesic of $\mathcal F$ onto a complex geodesic of $N$ is a biholomorphism? Among other things, we prove that this is the case if $M, N$ are smooth bounded strictly (linearly) convex domains, every element of $\mathcal F$ contains a given point of $\overline{M}$ and $\mathcal F$ spans all of $M$. More general results are pro…
We determine all connected homogeneous Kobayashi-hyperbolic manifolds of dimension $n\ge 2$ whose holomorphic automorphism group has dimension $n^2-2$. This result complements an existing classification for automorphism group dimension $n^2-1$ and greater obtained without the homogeneity assumption.
Let $M$ be a Kobayashi hyperbolic homogenous manifold. Let $\mathcal F$ be a holomorphic foliation on $M$ invariant under a transitive group $G$ of biholomorphisms. We prove that the leaves of $\mathcal F$ are the fibers of a holomorphic $G$-equivariant submersion $π\colon M \to N$ onto a $G$-homogeneous complex manifold $N$. We also show that if $\mathcal Q$ is an automorphism family of a hyperbolic convex (possibly unbounded) domain $D$ in $\mathbb C^n$, then the fixed point set of $\mathcal Q$ is either empty or a connected complex submanifold of $D$.
Normality criterion for a family of holomorphic curves that partially share wandering hyperplanes with their derivatives, and holomorphic functions lifted to curves in $P^2(\mathbb{C})$
These are the notes of a short course I gave in the school "Aspects métriques et dynamiques en analyse complete", Lille, May 2015. The aim of this notes is to describe how to use a geometric structure (namely, the Kobayashi distance) to explore and encode analytic properties of holomorphic functions and maps defined on complex manifolds. We shall first describe the main properties of the Kobayashi distance, and then we shall present applications to holomorphic dynamics in taut manifolds, strongly pseudo convex domains and convex domains, and to operator theory in Bergman spaces (Carleson measu…
If f: C -> P^n is a holomorphic curve of hyper-order less than one for which 2n + 1 hyperplanes in general position have forward invariant preimages with respect to the translation t(z)=z+c, then f is periodic with period c. This result, which can be described as a difference analogue of M. Green's Picard-type theorem for holomorphic curves, follows from a more general result presented in this paper. The proof relies on a new version of Cartan's second main theorem for the Casorati determinant and an extended version of the difference analogue of the lemma on the logarithmic derivatives, both …
We present some unexpected examples related to the Kobayashi pseudodistance: For an unramified covering, the vanishing of the Kobayashi pseudodistance on the base does not imply the vanishing on the total space. The vanishing of the Kobayashi pseudodistance does not imply the vanishing of the Kobayashi Royden pseudo metric. Given a locally holomorphic trivial fiber bundle, the Kobayashi pseudodistance may vanish identically on the total space even if the fiber is hyperbolic.
In this article we completely determine the possible dimensions of integral points and holomorphic curves on the complement of a union of hyperplanes in projective space. Our main theorems generalize a result of Evertse and Gyory, who determined when all sets of integral points (over all number fields) on the complement of a union of hyperplanes are finite, and a result of Ru, who determined when all holomorphic maps to the complement of a union of hyperplanes are constant. The main tools used are the S-unit lemma and its analytic analogue, Borel's lemma.
We prove the Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence and the approximate Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence for twisted holomorphic vector bundles on compact Kähler manifolds. More precisely, if $X$ is a compact manifold and $g$ is a Gauduchon metric on $X$, a twisted holomorphic vector bundle on $X$ is $g-$polystable if and only if it is $g-$Hermite-Einstein, and if $X$ is a compact Kähler manifold and $g$ is a Kähler metric on $X$, then a twisted holomorphic vector bundle on $X$ is $g-$semistable if and only if it is approximate $g-$Hermite-Einstein.
We give a parameter version of Graham-Kerzman approximation theorem for bounded holomorphic functions on strictly pseudoconvex domains. As an application, we present some uniform estimates for the boundary behaviour of the Kobayashi and Carathéodory pseudodistences on such domains.
We established a hyperplane restriction theorem for the local holomorphic mappings between projective spaces, which is inspired by the corresponding theorem of Green for homogeneous ideals in polynomial rings. Our theorem allows us to give the first proof for the existence of gaps (albeit smaller) at all level for the rational proper maps between complex unit balls, conjectured by Huang-Ji-Yin. In addition, our proof does not distinguish the unit balls from other generalized balls and thus it simultaneously demonstrates the same phenomenon for all generalized balls.
We prove a very general Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence on arbitrary compact Hermitian manifolds. This correspondence refers to moduli spaces of "universal holomorphic oriented pairs". Most of the classical moduli problems in complex geometry (e. g. holomorphic bundles with reductive structure groups, holomorphic pairs, holomorphic Higgs pairs, Witten triples, arbitrary quiver moduli problems) are special cases of this universal classification problem. Our Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence relates the complex geometric concept "polystable oriented holomorphic pair" to the existence of a reduct…
The key to the proof of the Ohsawa-Takegoshi Extension Theorem is a certain $\bar{\partial}$-estimate. The purpose of this note is to show that the 'curvature term' that arises in the Kohn-Morrey-Hörmander inequality (or the Bochner-Kodaira technique) is sufficient to produce such an estimate. We exploit self boundedness of the gradients of the weight functions to change the weight with respect to which the adjoint is taken. The weights, on the other hand, are the usual ones used in this context.
We present a form of Schwarz's lemma for holomorphic maps between convex domains $D_1$ and $D_2$. This result provides a lower bound on the distance between the images of relatively compact subsets of $D_1$ and the boundary of $D_2$. This is a natural improvement of an old estimate by Bernal-González that takes into account the geometry of $\partial{D_1}$. Using similar techniques, we also provide a new estimate for the Kobayashi metric on bounded convex domains.
In this paper we study the global geometry of the Kobayashi metric on "convex" sets. We provide new examples of non-Gromov hyperbolic domains in $\mathbb{C}^n$ of many kinds: pseudoconvex and non-pseudocon \newline -vex, bounded and unbounded. Our first aim is to prove that if $Ω$ is a bounded weakly linearly convex domain in $\mathbb{C}^n,\,n\geq 2,$ and $S$ is an affine complex hyperplane intersecting $Ω,$ then the domain $Ω\setminus S$ endowed with the Kobayashi metric is not Gromov hyperbolic (Theorem 1.3). Next we localize this result on Kobayashi hyperbolic convex domains. Namely, we sho…
In his famous 1981 paper, Lempert proved that given a point in a strongly convex domain the complex geodesics (i.e., the extremal disks) for the Kobayashi metric passing through that point provide a very useful fibration of the domain. In this paper we address the question whether, given a smooth complex Finsler metric on a complex manifold, it is possible to give purely differential geometric properties of the metric ensuring the existence of such a fibration in complex geodesics of the manifold. We first discuss at some length the notion of holomorphic sectional curvature for a complex Finsl…
We show, using the Kobayashi and Caratheodory metrics on special holomorphic disks in the universal Teichmuller space, that a wide class of holomorphic functionals on the space of univalent functions in the disk is maximized by the Koebe function or by its root transforms; their extremality is forced by hyperbolic features. As consequences, this implies the proofs of the famous Zalcman and Bieberbach conjectures.
We prove that every bounded strictly $J$-convex region equipped with the Kobayashi metric is hyperbolic in the sense of Gromov. We apply this result to the study of the dynamics of pseudo-holomorphic maps.
The Ricci curvature of the Bergman metric on a bounded domain $D\subset \mathbb{C}^n$ is strictly bounded above by $n+1$ and consequently $\log (K_D^{n+1}g_{B,D})$, where $K_D$ is the Bergman kernel for $D$ on the diagonal and $g_{B, D}$ is the Riemannian volume element of the Bergman metric on $D$, is the potential for a Kähler metric on $D$ known as the Kobayashi--Fuks metric. In this note we study the localization of this metric near holomorphic peak points and also show that this metric shares several properties with the Bergman metric on strongly pseudoconvex domains.
A Brody curve, a.k.a. normal curve, is a holomorphic map from the complex line to the complex projective space of dimension n, such that the family of its translations is normal. We prove that Brody curves omitting n hyperplanes in general position have growth order at most one, normal type. This generalizes a result of Clunie and Hayman who proved it for n=1.
Oka manifolds can be viewed as the "opposite" of Kobayashi hyperbolic manifolds. Kobayashi asked whether the complement in projective space of a generic hypersurface of sufficiently high degree is hyperbolic. Therefore it is natural to investigate Oka properties of complements of low degree hypersurfaces. We determine which complements of hyperplane arrangements in projective space are Oka. A related question is which hypersurfaces in affine space have Oka complements. We give some results for graphs of meromorphic functions.
We study holomorphic curves $f:\C\longrightarrow \C^3$ avoiding four complex hyperplanes and a real subspace of real dimension four or five in $\C^3$. We show that the projection of $f$ into the complex projective space $\C P^2$ is not necessarily constant.
This article considers isometries of the Kobayashi and Carathéod-ory metrics on domains in $ \mathbf{C}^n $ and the extent to which they behave like holomorphic mappings. First we prove a metric version of Poincaré's theorem about biholomorphic inequivalence of $ \mathbf{B}^n $, the unit ball in $ \mathbf{C}^n $ and $ Δ^n $, the unit polydisc in $ \mathbf{C}^n $ and then provide few examples which \textit{suggest} that $ \mathbf{B}^n $ cannot be mapped isometrically onto a product domain. In addition, we prove several results on continuous extension of isometries $ f : D_1 \rightarrow D_2 $ to…
We prove that for a pseudoconvex domain of the form $\mathfrak{A} = \{(z, w) \in \mathbb C^2 : v > F(z, u)\}$, where $w = u + iv$ and F is a continuous function on ${\mathbb C}_z \times {\mathbb R}_u$, the following conditions are equivalent: (1) The domain $\mathfrak{A}$ is Kobayashi hyperbolic. (2) The domain $\mathfrak{A}$ is Brody hyperbolic. (3) The domain $\mathfrak{A}$ possesses a Bergman metric. (4) The domain $\mathfrak{A}$ possesses a bounded smooth strictly plurisubharmonic function, i.e. the core $\mathfrak{c}(\mathfrak{A})$ of $\mathfrak{A}$ is empty. (5) The graph $Γ(F)$ of $F$ c…
We establish a lower estimate for the Kobayashi-Royden infinitesimal pseudometric on an almost complex manifold $(M,J)$ admitting a bounded strictly plurisubharmonic function. We apply this result to study the boundary behaviour of the metric on a strictly pseudoconvex domain in $M$ and to give a sufficient condition for the complete hyperbolicity of a domain in $(M,J)$. Finally we obtain the regularity up to the bounday of $J$-holomorphic discs attached to a totally real submanifold in $M$.
Applying the Second Main Theorem we deal with the algebraic degeneracy of entire holomorphic curves from the complex plane into a complex algebraic normal variety of positive log Kodaira dimension that admits a finite proper morphism to a semi-abelian variety. We will also discuss applications to the Kobayashi hyperbolicity problem.
This paper shows that every totally-geodesic isometry from the unit disk to a finite-dimensional Teichmüller space for the intrinsic Kobayashi metric is either holomorphic or anti-holomorphic; in particular, it is a Teichmüller disk. Additionally, a similar result is proved for a large class of disk-rigid domains, which includes strictly convex bounded domains, as well as Teichmüller spaces.
This survey article mainly addresses to graduate students and young researchers in complex geometry willing to enter the beautiful word of connections between curvature and Kobayashi hyperbolicity. It is a detailed account of a recent breakthrough by Wu and Yau, shortly after generalized by Tosatti and Yang (and others), which sits on the crossroad between complex differential geometry and Kobayashi hyperbolicity. More specifically, an old conjecture by Kobayashi, stated at the very beginning of the theory, predicts that a compact hyperbolic manifold should have ample canonical bundle. Now, on…
We prove that pseudo-holomorphic discs attached to a maximal totally real submanifold inherit their regularity from the regularity of the submanifold and of the almost complex structure. The proof is based on the computation of an explicit lower bound for the Kobayashi metric in almost complex manifolds, which also yields explicit estimates of Hölderian norms of such discs.
In this paper, we prove some fundamental theorems for holomorphic curves on angular domain intersecting a hypersurface, finite set of fixed hyperplanes in general position and finite set of fixed hypersurfaces in general position on complex projective variety with the level of truncation. As applications of the second main theorems for an angle, we will discuss the uniqueness problem of holomorphic curves in an angle instead of the whole complex plane. Detail, we establish a result for uniqueness problem of holomorphic curve by inverse image of a hypersurface. In my knowledge, this is the firs…
We consider a problem of whether a property of holomorphic curves on a subset $X$ of the complex plane can be extended to the whole complex plane. In this paper, the property we consider is uniqueness of holomorphic curves. We introduce the propagation set. Simply speaking, $X$ is a propagation set if linear relation of holomorphic curves on the part of preimage of hyperplanes contained in $X$ can be extended to the whole complex plane. If the holomorphic curves are of infinite order, we prove the existence of a propagation set which is the union of a sequence of disks (In fact, the method app…
Let $\1$ and $\2$ be $\s$ domains in $\Cn$ and $f: \1 \rt \2$ an isometry for the Kobayashi or Carathéodory metrics. Suppose that $f$ extends as a $C^1$ map to $ \bar \om_1$. We then prove that $f|_{\partial \1}: \partial \1 \rt \partial \2$ is a CR or anti-CR diffeomorphism. It follows that $\1$ and $\2$ must be biholomorphic or anti-biholomorphic. The main tool is a metric version of the Pinchuk rescaling technique.
We propose a new approach to the value distribution theory of entire holomorphic curves. We define a ``packing density'' of an entire holomorphic curve, and show that it has various non-trivial properties. We prove a ``gap theorem'' for holomorphic maps from elliptic curves to the complex projective space, and study the relation between theta functions and our packing problem. Applying the Nevanlinna theory, we investigate the packing densities of entire holomorphic curves in the complement of hyperplanes.
We prove that Kobayashi isometries between strongly convex domains are holomorphic or anti-holomorphic. More precisely, let $n_1, n_2$ be positive integers and let $Ω_i \subset \C^{n_i}, \ i=1,2$, be bounded $C^3$ strongly convex domains. If $ϕ: (Ω_1, d^K_{Ω_1}) \rightarrow (Ω_2, d^K_{Ω_2})$ is an isometry, i.e. $ d^K_Ω_{n_2}(f(ζ),f(η)) = d^K_{n_1} (ζ,η)$ for all $ζ,η\in Ω_1,$ then $ϕ$ is either holomorphic or anti-holomorphic.
In this article we give an expository account of the holomorphic motion theorem based on work of Màñé-Sad-Sullivan, Bers-Royden, and Chirka. After proving this theorem, we show that tangent vectors to holomorphic motions have $|ε\log ε|$ moduli of continuity and then show how this type of continuity for tangent vectors can be combined with Schwarz's lemma and integration over the holomorphic variable to produce Hölder continuity on the mappings. We also prove, by using holomorphic motions, that Kobayashi's and Teichmüller's metrics on the Teichmüller space of a Riemann surface coincide. Finall…
We prove the existence of non-positively curved Kähler-Einstein metrics with cone singularities along a given simple normal crossing divisor on a compact Kähler manifold, under a technical condition on the cone angles, and we also discuss the case of positively-curved Kähler-Einstein metrics with cone singularities. As an application we extend to this setting classical results of Lichnerowicz and Kobayashi on the parallelism and vanishing of appropriate holomorphic tensor fields.
In this paper, we prove that in any projective manifold, the complements of general hypersurfaces of sufficiently large degree are Kobayashi hyperbolic. We also provide an effective lower bound on the degree. This confirms a conjecture by S. Kobayashi in 1970. Our proof, based on the theory of jet differentials, is obtained by reducing the problem to the construction of a particular example with strong hyperbolicity properties. This approach relies the construction of higher order logarithmic connections allowing us to construct logarithmic Wronskians. These logarithmic Wronskians are the buil…
We prove the existence and the essential uniqueness of canonical models for the forward (resp. backward) iteration of a holomorphic self-map $f$ of a cocompact Kobayashi hyperbolic complex manifold, such as the ball $\mathbb{B}^q$ or the polydisc $Δ^q$. This is done performing a time-dependent conjugacy of the dynamical system $(f^n)$, obtaining in this way a non-autonomous dynamical system admitting a relatively compact forward (resp. backward) orbit, and then proving the existence of a natural complex structure on a suitable quotient of the direct limit (resp. subset of the inverse limit). A…
We describe some results of value distribution theory of holomorphic curves and quasiregular maps, which are obtained using potential theory. Among the results discussed are: extensions of Picard's theorems to quasiregular maps between Riemannian manifolds, a version of the Second Main Theorem of Nevanlinna for curves in projective space and non-linear divisors, description of extremal functions in Nevanlinna theory and results related to Cartan's 1928 conjecture on holomorphic curves in the unit disc omitting hyperplanes.
In this paper we prove a metric version of Hartogs' theorem where the holomorphic function is replaced by a locally symmetric Hermitian metric. As an application, we prove that if the Kobayashi metric on a strongly pseudoconvex domain with $\mathcal{C}^2$ smooth boundary is a Kähler metric, then the universal cover of the domain is the unit ball.
The classical Brody's theorem asserts the equivalence between two notions of hyperbolicity for compact complex spaces, one named after Kobayashi and one expressed in terms of lack of non constant holomorphic entire functions (compactness is only used to prove the harder implication). We extend this theorem to Deligne-Mumford analytic stacks, by first providing definitions of what we think of Kobayashi and Brody hyperbolicity for such objects and then proving the equivalence of these concepts under an assumption of compactness.
