The description of the intersections of components of a Springer fiber is a very complex problem. Up to now only two cases have been described completely. The complete picture for the hook case has been obtained by
N. Spaltenstein and J.A. Vargas, and for two-row case by
F.Y.C. Fung. They have shown in particular that the intersection of a pair of components of a Springer fiber is either irreducible or empty. In both cases all the components are non-singular and the irreducibility of the intersections is strongly related to the non-singularity. As it has been shown in [8] a bijection between orbital varieties and components of the corresponding Springer fiber in GL_n extends to a bijection between the irreducible components of the intersections of orbital varieties and the irreducible components of the intersections of components of Springer fiber preserving their codimensions. Here we use this bijection to compute the intersections of the irreducible components of Springer fibers for two-column case. In this case the components are in general singular. As we show the intersection of two components is non-empty. The main result of the paper is a necessary and sufficient condition for the intersection of two components of the Springer fiber to be irreducible in two-column case. The condition is purely combinatorial. As an application of this characterization, we give first examples of pairs of componentswith a reducible intersection having components of different dimensions.
We prove that the center of a regular block of parabolic category O for the general linear Lie algebra is isomorphic to the cohomology algebra of a corresponding Springer fiber. This was conjectured by Khovanov. We also find presentations for the centers of singular blocks, which are cohomology algebras of Spaltenstein varieties.
In this paper, we study the affine Springer fiber $\mathcal{F} l_N$ in type $A$ for rectangular type semisimple nil-element $N$ and calculate the relative position between irreducible components. In particular, we use the affine matrix ball construction to show the relative position map is compatible with the Kazhdan-Lusztig cell structure, generalizing the work of Steinberg and van Leeuwen.
This survey paper describes Springer fibers, which are used in one of the earliest examples of a geometric representation. We will compare and contrast them with Schubert varieties, another family of subvarieties of the flag variety that play an important role in representation theory and combinatorics, but whose geometry is in many respects simpler. The end of the paper describes a way that Springer fibers and Schubert varieties are related, as well as open questions.
We introduce the higher rank $(q,t)$-Catalan polynomials and prove they equal truncations of the Hikita polynomial to a finite number of variables. Using affine compositions and a certain standardization map, we define a dinv statistic on rank $r$ semistandard $(m,n)$-parking functions and prove codinv counts the dimension of an affine space in an affine paving of a parabolic affine Springer fiber. Combining these results, we give a finite analogue of the Rational Shuffle Theorem in the context of double affine Hecke algebras. Lastly, we also give a Bizley-type formula for the higher rank Cata…
This paper constructs pavings by affine spaces for the affine Springer fibers for PGL(3) obtained from regular compact elements in a split maximal torus. These pavings are constructed by intersecting the affine Springer fiber with a non-standard paving of the affine Grassmannian.
The affine Springer fiber corresponding to a regular integral equivalued semisimple element admits a paving by vector bundles over Hessenberg varieties and hence its (Borel-Moore) homology is "pure".
This paper studies two new kinds of affine Springer fibers that are adapted to the root valuation strata of Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson. In addition it develops various linear versions of Katz's Hodge-Newton decomposition.
For Weyl groups of classical types, we present formulas to calculate the restriction of Springer representations to a maximal parabolic subgroup of the same type. As a result, we give recursive formulas for Euler characteristics of Springer fibers for classical types. We also give tables of those for exceptional types.
We consider the Springer fiber over a nilpotent endomorphism. Fix a Jordan basis and consider the standard torus relative to this. We deal with the problem to describe the flags fixed by the torus which belong to a given component of the Springer fiber. We solve the problem in the hook, two-row and two-column cases. We provide two main characterizations which are common to the three cases, and which involve dominance relations between Young diagrams and combinatorial algorithms. Then, for these three cases, we deduce topological properties of the components and their intersections.
We describe Springer fibers corresponding to the minimal and minimal special nilpotent orbits of simple Lie algebras. As a result, we give an answer to the conjecture of Humphreys regarding some graphs attached to Springer fibers.
We decompose the fibers of the Springer resolution for the odd nilcone of the Lie superalgebra $\osp(2n+1,2n)$ into locally closed subsets. We use this decomposition to prove that almost all fibers are connected. However, in contrast with the classical Springer fibers, we prove that the fibers can be disconnected and non equidimensional.
For G a semisimple algebraic group, we revisit the description of the components of the affne Springer fiber given by ts, with s a regular semisimple element. We then compute the fixed points of each component of a particular affne Springer fiber for Type A
Work of Kazhdan-Lusztig and Bezrukavnikov suggests the importance of points in affine Springer fibers for which the associated conjugacy class in the finite dimensional Lie algebra is regular. Such points are characterized in a different way in this paper, using the same kind of information as goes into the weight factors used to form weighted orbital integrals.
We study the geometry and topology of exotic Springer fibers for orbits corresponding to one-row bipartitions from an explicit, combinatorial point of view. This includes a detailed analysis of the structure of the irreducible components and their intersections as well as the construction of an explicit affine paving. Moreover, we compute the ring structure of cohomology by constructing a CW-complex homotopy equivalent to the exotic Springer fiber. This homotopy equivalent space admits an action of the type C Weyl group inducing Kato's original exotic Springer representation on cohomology. Our…
We classify finite dimensional simple spherical representations of rational double affine Hecke algebras, and we study a remarkable family of finite dimensional simple spherical representations of double affine Hecke algebras.
We construct an explicit topological model (similar to the topological Springer fibers appearing in work of Khovanov and Russell) for every two-row Springer fiber associated with the even orthogonal group and prove that the respective topological model is homeomorphic to its corresponding Springer fiber. This confirms a conjecture by Ehrig and Stroppel concerning the topology of the equal-row Springer fiber for the even orthogonal group. Moreover, we show that every two-row Springer fiber for the symplectic group is homeomorphic (even isomorphic as an algebraic variety) to a connected componen…
We determine a formula for the dimension of a family of affine Springer fibers associated to a symmetric space arising from the block diagonal embedding $\mathrm{GL}_n\times\mathrm{GL}_n\hookrightarrow\mathrm{GL}_{2n}$ . As an application, we determine the dimension of affine Springer fibers attached to certain unitary symmetric spaces.
Consider a nilpotent element e in a simple complex Lie algebra. The Springer fibre corresponding to e admits a discretization (discrete analogue) introduced by the author in 1999. In this paper we propose a conjectural description of that discretization which is more amenable to computation. We also propose a conjectural PBW analogue of that discretization. This version differs substantially from the previous one.
Assuming a certain "purity" conjecture, we derive a formula for the (complex) cohomology groups of the affine Springer fiber corresponding to any unramified regular semi-simple element. We use this calculation to present a complex analog of the fundamental lemma for function fields. We show that the "kappa" orbital integral which arises in the fundamental lemma is equal to the Lefschetz trace of Frobenius acting on the etale cohomology of a related variety.
For a Weyl group $W$ of classical type, we present a formula to calculate the restriction of (graded) Springer representations of $W$ to a maximal parabolic subgroup $W'$ where the types of $W$ and $W'$ are in the same series. As a result, we obtain recursive formulas for the Betti numbers of Springer fibers for classical types.
These are the expanded lecture notes from the author's mini-course during the graduate summer school of the Park City Math Institute in 2015. The main topics covered are: geometry of Springer fibers, affine Springer fibers and Hitchin fibers; representations of (affine) Weyl groups arising from these objects; relation between affine Springer fibers and orbital integrals.
This article has two parallel perspectives: to demonstrate an inductive structure of Shalika germs, and to show an analogous inductive structure for affine Springer fibers. More precisely, we give an algorithm to compute arbitrary Shalika germs (resp. affine Springer fibers up to stratification) in terms of three ingredients: Shalika germs (resp. affine Springer fibers) for twisted Levi subgroups, a finite list of combinatorial objects, and the numbers of rational points on varieties over the residue field (resp. varieties themselves) among an explicit finite list of such. We also discuss some…
Let $u\in\mathrm{End}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ be nilpotent. The variety of $u$-stable complete flags is called the Springer fiber over $u$. Its irreducible components are parameterized by a set of standard Young tableaux. The Richardson (resp. Bala-Carter) components of Springer fibers correspond to the Richardson (resp. Bala-Carter) elements of the symmetric group, through Robinson-Schensted correspondence. Every Richardson component is isomorphic to a product of standard flag varieties. On the contrary, the Bala-Carter components are very susceptible to be singular. First, we characterize the singula…
We describe the irreducible components of Springer fibers for hook and two-row nilpotent elements of gl_n(C) as iterated bundles of flag manifolds and Grassmannians. We then relate the topology (in particular, the intersection homology Poincare' polynomials) of the intersections of these components with the inner products of the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements of irreducible representations of the rational Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type A corresponding to the hook and two-row Young shapes.
We give an explicit description of the irreducible components of two-row Springer fibers for all classical types using cup diagrams. Cup diagrams can be used to label the irreducible components of two-row Springer fibers. Given a cup diagram, we explicitly write down all flags contained in the component associated to the cup diagram. This generalizes results by Stroppel--Webster and Fung to all classical types.
We explain an elementary topological construction of the Springer representation on the homology of (topological) Springer fibers of types C and D in the case of nilpotent endomorphisms with two Jordan blocks. The Weyl group and component group actions admit a diagrammatic description in terms of cup diagrams which appear in the definition of arc algebras of types B and D. We determine the decomposition of the representations into irreducibles and relate our construction to classical Springer theory. As an application we obtain presentations of the cohomology rings of all two-block Springer fi…
In this note we give a geometric realization of the cohomology of Springer fibers in type A. More precisely, we describe the cohomology by the coordinate ring of a scheme theoretic intersection of a Cartan subalgebra with a certain union of cones of nilpotent elements inside the Lie algebra of the group SL_n. As such, the main result of this note is similar to an earlier description given by de Concini and Procesi.
Starting from a homogeneous affine Springer fiber $Fl_ψ$, we construct three moduli spaces that correspond to the Dolbeault, de Rham and Betti aspects of a hypothetical Simpson correspondence with wild ramifications. We show that $Fl_ψ$ is homeomorphic to the central Lagrangian fiber in the Dolbeault space, prove that the Dolbeaut and de Rham spaces both have the same cohomology as $Fl_ψ$, and construct a map from the de Rham space to the Betti space which we conjecture to be an analytic isomorphism.
We study basic geometric properties of some group analogue of affine Springer fibers and compare with the classical Lie algebra affine Springer fibers. The main purpose is to formulate a conjecture that relates the number of irreducible components of such varieties for a reductive group $G$ to certain weight multiplicities defined by the Langlands dual group $\hat{G}$. We prove our conjecture in the case of unramified conjugacy class.
We give an explicit description of the irreducible components of two-row Springer fibers in type A as closed subvarieties in certain Nakajima quiver varieties in terms of quiver representations. By taking invariants under a variety automorphism, we obtain an explicit algebraic description of the irreducible components of two-row Springer fibers of classical type. As a consequence, we discover relations on isotropic flags that describe the irreducible components.
Consider a complex classical semi-simple Lie group along with the set of its nilpotent coadjoint orbits. When the group is of type A, the set of orbital varieties contained in a given nilpotent orbit is described a set of standard Young tableaux. We parameterize both, the orbital varieties and the irreducible components of unipotent varieties in the other classical groups by sets of standard domino tableaux. The main tools are Spaltenstein's results on signed domino tableaux together with Garfinkle's operations on standard domino tableaux.
Let $\mathbf{G}$ be a connected split reductive group over a field of characteristic zero or sufficiently large characteristic, $γ_0\in(\operatorname{Lie}\mathbf{G})((t))$ be any topologically nilpotent regular semisimple element, and $γ=tγ_0$. Using methods from $p$-adic orbital integrals, we show that the number of components of the Iwahori affine Springer fiber over $γ$ modulo $Z_{\mathbf{G}((t))}(γ)$ is equal to the order of the Weyl group.
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a semisimple Lie algebra, $\mathfrak{t}$ its Cartan subalgebra and $W$ the Weyl group. The goal of this paper is to prove an isomorphism between suitable completions of the equivariant Borel-Moore homology of certain affine Springer fibers for $\mathfrak{g}$ and the global sections of a bundle related to a Procesi bundle on the smooth locus of a partial resolution of $(\mathfrak{t}\oplus \mathfrak{t}^*)/W$. We deduce some applications of our isomorphism including a conditional application to the center of the small quantum group. Our main method is to compare certain bimo…
The affine Weyl group acts on the cohomology (with compact support) of affine Springer fibers (local Springer theory) and of parabolic Hitchin fibers (global Springer theory). In this paper, we show that in both situations, the action of the center of the group algebra of the affine Weyl group (the spherical part) factors through the action of the component group of the relevant centralizers. In the situation of affine Springer fibers, this partially verifies a conjecture of Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson and Bezrukavnikov-Varshavsky. We first prove this result for the global Springer action, and…
We prove an explicit formula for the Poincaré polynomials of parabolic character varieties of Riemann surfaces with semisimple local monodromies, which was conjectured by Hausel, Letellier and Rodriguez-Villegas. Using an approach of Mozgovoy and Schiffmann the problem is reduced to counting pairs of a parabolic vector bundles and a nilpotent endomorphism of prescribed generic type. The generating function counting these pairs is shown to be a product of Macdonald polynomials and the function counting pairs without parabolic structure. The modified Macdonald polynomial $\tilde H_λ[X;q,t]$ is i…
For $G$ a connected reductive group, $γ\in \kg(F)$ semisimple regular integral, we introduce a fundamental domain $F_γ$ for the affine Springer fibers $\xx_γ$. There is a beautiful way to reduce the purity conjecture of $\xx_γ$ to that of $F_γ$, we call it the Arthur-Kottwitz reduction. When restricted to the unramified case, it turns out that these fundamental domains behave well in family. We formulate a rationality conjecture about a generating series of their Poincaré polynomials. We then study them in detail for the group $\gl_{3}$. In particular, we pave them in affine spaces and we prov…
We identify, up to homeomorphisms, the affine Springer fibers for GL(n) on a local field of equal characteristics with some coverings of compactified jacobians of singular projective curves. This allows us to prove an irreducibility property of these affine Springer fibers and to deform them.
It is a remarkable theorem by Maffei--Nakajima that the Slodowy variety, which is a subvariety of the resolution of the nilpotent cone, can be realized as a Nakajima quiver variety of type A. However, the isomorphism is rather implicit as it takes to solve a system of equations in which the variables are linear maps. In this paper, we construct solutions to this system under certain assumptions. This establishes an explicit and efficient way to compute the image of a complete flag contained in the Slodowy variety under the Maffei--Nakajima isomorphism and describe these flags in terms of quive…
For any connected reductive group $G$ over $\mathbb{C}$, we revisit Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson's description of the torus equivariant Borel-Moore homology of affine Springer fibers $\mathrm{Sp}_γ\subset \mathrm{Gr}_G$, where $γ=at^d$, and $a$ is a regular semisimple element in the Lie algebra of $G$. In the case $G = GL_n$, we relate the equivariant cohomology of $\mathrm{Sp}_γ$ to Haiman's work on the isospectral Hilbert scheme of points on the plane. We also explain the connection to the HOMFLY homology of $(n, dn)$-torus links, and formulate a conjecture describing the homology of the Hilb…
The affine Springer fiber corresponding to $GL_{4}$ and regular semi-simple integral split element admits an affine paving, so its cohomology is "pure".
Following Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson, we compute the homology of truncated affine Springer fibers in the unramified case but under a purity assumption. We prove this assumption in the equivalued case. The truncation parameter is viewed as a divisor on an l-adic toric variety. For each fiber, we introduce a graded quasi-coherent sheaf on the toric variety whose space of global sections is precisely the l-adic homology of the truncated affine Springer fiber. Moreover, for some families of endoscopic groups, these sheaves show up in an exact sequence. As a consequence we prove Arthur's weig…
We study the exotic t-structure on the derived category of coherent sheaves on two-block Springer fibre (i.e. for a nilpotent matrix of type (m+n,n) in type A). The exotic t-structure has been defined by Bezrukavnikov and Mirkovic for Springer theoretic varieties in order to study representations of Lie algebras in positive characteristic. Using work of Cautis and Kamnitzer, we construct functors indexed by affine tangles, between categories of coherent sheaves on different two-block Springer fibres (i.e. for different values of n). After checking some exactness properties of these functors, w…
The author decided to withdraw this paper by 1) an error in Lemma 5.11 (and 5.12) which requires some justification; 2) the main result of this paper suffers overlap with arXiv:1203.5254; 3) the author decided to split arXiv:1203.5254 into two pieces, and the main application of this paper is transferred to one of them (in order to keep strength of the applications presented in each paper); and 4) thus a "newer version" of this paper would have different story and substantially different contents, which he feels a different paper.
We prove a conjecture which expresses the bigraded Poisson-de Rham homology of the nilpotent cone of a semisimple Lie algebra in terms of the generalized (one-variable) Kostka polynomials, via a formula suggested by Lusztig. This allows us to construct a canonical family of filtrations on the flag variety cohomology, and hence on irreducible representations of the Weyl group, whose Hilbert series are given by the generalized Kostka polynomials. We deduce consequences for the cohomology of all Springer fibers. In particular, this computes the grading on the zeroth Poisson homology of all classi…
This paper is a subsequent paper of math.RT/0607673. Here we consider the irreducible components of Springer fibres (or orbital varieties) for two-column case in GL}_n. We describe the intersection of two irreducible components, and specially give the necessary and sufficient condition for this intersection to be of codimension one. Since an orbital variety in two-column case is a finite union of the Borel orbits, we solve the initial question by determining orbits of codimension one in the closure of a given orbit. We show that they are parameterized by a specific set of involutions called de…
The flag variety of a complex reductive linear algebraic group G is by definition the quotient G/B by a Borel subgroup. It can be regarded as the set of Borel subalgebras of Lie(G). Given a nilpotent element e in Lie(G), one calls Springer fiber the subvariety formed by the Borel subalgebras which contain e. Springer fibers have in general a complicated structure (not irreducible, singular). Nevertheless, a theorem by C. De Concini, G. Lusztig, and C. Procesi asserts that, when G is classical, a Springer fiber can always be paved by finitely many subvarieties isomorphic to affine spaces. In th…
We show that the motive of a Springer fiber is pure Tate. We then consider a category of equivariant Springer motives on the nilpotent cone and construct an equivalence to the derived category of graded modules over the graded affine Hecke algebra.
For a fixed 2-block Springer fiber, we describe the structure of its irreducible components and their relation to the Bialynicki-Birula paving, following work of Fung. That is, we consider the space of complete flags in C^n preserved by a fixed nilpotent matrix with 2 Jordan blocks, and study the action of diagonal matrices commuting with our fixed nilpotent. In particular, we describe the structure of each component, its set of torus fixed points, and prove a conjecture of Fung describing the intersection of any pair. Then we define a convolution algebra structure on the direct sum of the coh…
