We give an explicit description of the irreducible components of two-row Springer fibers for all classical types using cup diagrams. Cup diagrams can be used to label the irreducible components of two-row Springer fibers. Given a cup diagram, we explicitly write down all flags contained in the component associated to the cup diagram. This generalizes results by Stroppel--Webster and Fung to all classical types.
Springer varieties appear in both geometric representation theory and knot theory. Motivated by knot theory and categorification Khovanov provides a topological construction of $(n/2, n/2)$ Springer varieties. We extend Khovanov's construction to all two-row Springer varieties. Using the combinatorial and diagrammatic properties of this construction we provide a particularly useful homology basis and construct the Springer representation using this basis. We also provide a skein-theoretic formulation of the representation in this case.
We construct an explicit topological model (similar to the topological Springer fibers appearing in work of Khovanov and Russell) for every two-row Springer fiber associated with the even orthogonal group and prove that the respective topological model is homeomorphic to its corresponding Springer fiber. This confirms a conjecture by Ehrig and Stroppel concerning the topology of the equal-row Springer fiber for the even orthogonal group. Moreover, we show that every two-row Springer fiber for the symplectic group is homeomorphic (even isomorphic as an algebraic variety) to a connected componen…
We study in detail two row Springer fibres of even orthogonal type from an algebraic as well as topological point of view. We show that the irreducible components and their pairwise intersections are iterated P^1-bundles. Using results of Kumar and Procesi we compute the cohomology ring with its action of the Weyl group. The main tool is a type D diagram calculus labelling the irreducible components in an convenient way which relates to a diagrammatical algebra describing the category of perverse sheaves on isotropic Grassmannians based on work of Braden. The diagram calculus generalizes Khova…
We describe the irreducible components of Springer fibers for hook and two-row nilpotent elements of gl_n(C) as iterated bundles of flag manifolds and Grassmannians. We then relate the topology (in particular, the intersection homology Poincare' polynomials) of the intersections of these components with the inner products of the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements of irreducible representations of the rational Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type A corresponding to the hook and two-row Young shapes.
We give an explicit description of the irreducible components of two-row Springer fibers in type A as closed subvarieties in certain Nakajima quiver varieties in terms of quiver representations. By taking invariants under a variety automorphism, we obtain an explicit algebraic description of the irreducible components of two-row Springer fibers of classical type. As a consequence, we discover relations on isotropic flags that describe the irreducible components.
We consider the Springer fiber over a nilpotent endomorphism. Fix a Jordan basis and consider the standard torus relative to this. We deal with the problem to describe the flags fixed by the torus which belong to a given component of the Springer fiber. We solve the problem in the hook, two-row and two-column cases. We provide two main characterizations which are common to the three cases, and which involve dominance relations between Young diagrams and combinatorial algorithms. Then, for these three cases, we deduce topological properties of the components and their intersections.
Kato's exotic nilpotent cone was introduced as a substitute for the ordinary nilpotent cone of type C with cleaner properties. The geometric Robinson-Schensted correspondence is obtained by parametrizing the irreducible components of the Steinberg variety (the conormal variety for the action of a semisimple group on two copies of its flag variety); in type A the bijection coincides with the classical Robinson-Schensted algorithm for the symmetric group. Here we give a combinatorial description of the bijection obtained by using the exotic nilpotent cone instead of ordinary type C nilpotent con…
It is a remarkable theorem by Maffei--Nakajima that the Slodowy variety, which is a subvariety of the resolution of the nilpotent cone, can be realized as a Nakajima quiver variety of type A. However, the isomorphism is rather implicit as it takes to solve a system of equations in which the variables are linear maps. In this paper, we construct solutions to this system under certain assumptions. This establishes an explicit and efficient way to compute the image of a complete flag contained in the Slodowy variety under the Maffei--Nakajima isomorphism and describe these flags in terms of quive…
We study the geometry and topology of exotic Springer fibers for orbits corresponding to one-row bipartitions from an explicit, combinatorial point of view. This includes a detailed analysis of the structure of the irreducible components and their intersections as well as the construction of an explicit affine paving. Moreover, we compute the ring structure of cohomology by constructing a CW-complex homotopy equivalent to the exotic Springer fiber. This homotopy equivalent space admits an action of the type C Weyl group inducing Kato's original exotic Springer representation on cohomology. Our…
We give a common framework for the classification of projective spin irreducible representations of a Weyl group, modeled after the Springer correspondence for ordinary representations.
We establish a relation between the known parametrization of a family of irreducible representations of a Weyl group and Springer's correspondence. We outline a parametrization of unipotent character sheaves on a connected reductive group in terms of restrictions to various conjugacy classes.
We give an apriori description of a set of irreducible representations of a Weyl group which parametrize the nilpotent orbits in the Lie algebra of a connected reductive group in arbitrary characteristic. We also answer a question of Serre concerning the conjugacy class of a power of a unipotent element in a connected reductive group.
Kato introduced the exotic nilpotent cone to be a substitute for the ordinary nilpotent cone of type C with cleaner properties. Here we describe the irreducible components of exotic Springer fibres (the fibres of the resolution of the exotic nilpotent cone), and prove that they are naturally in bijection with standard bitableaux. As a result, we deduce the existence of an exotic Robinson-Schensted bijection, which is a variant of the type C Robinson-Schensted bijection between pairs of same-shape standard bitableaux and elements of the Weyl group; this bijection is described explicitly in the …
Let $G$ be a simply connected semisimple algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$ and let $ρ:G\rightarrow GL(V_λ)$ be an irreducible representation of highest weight $λ$. Suppose that $ρ$ has finite kernel. Springer defined adjoint-invariant regular map with Zariski dense image from the group to its Lie algebra, $θ_λ:G\rightarrow\mathfrak{g}$, which depends on $λ$ [Kumar]. By a lemma in Kumar's recent paper, $θ_λ$ takes the maximal torus to its Lie algebra $\mathfrak{t}$. Thus, for a given simple group $G$ and an irreducible representation $V_λ$, one may write $θ_λ(t)=\sum\limits_{i=1}^n c_i(t)\check…
The description of the intersections of components of a Springer fiber is a very complex problem. Up to now only two cases have been described completely. The complete picture for the hook case has been obtained by N. Spaltenstein and J.A. Vargas, and for two-row case by F.Y.C. Fung. They have shown in particular that the intersection of a pair of components of a Springer fiber is either irreducible or empty. In both cases all the components are non-singular and the irreducibility of the intersections is strongly related to the non-singularity. As it has been shown in [8] a bijection between o…
Springer varieties are studied because their cohomology carries a natural action of the symmetric group $S_n$ and their top-dimensional cohomology is irreducible. In his work on tangle invariants, Khovanov constructed a family of Springer varieties $X_n$ as subvarieties of the product of spheres $(S^2)^n$. We show that if $X_n$ is embedded antipodally in $(S^2)^n$ then the natural $S_n$-action on $(S^2)^n$ induces an $S_n$-representation on the image of $H_*(X_n)$. This representation is the Springer representation. Our construction admits an elementary (and geometrically natural) combinatoria…
The Springer resolution of the nilpotent cone is used to give a geometric construction of the irreducible representations of Weyl groups. Borho and MacPherson obtain the Springer correspondence by applying the decomposition theorem to the Springer resolution, establishing an injective map from the set of irreducible Weyl group representations to simple equivariant perverse sheaves on the nilpotent cone. In this manuscript, we consider a generalization of the Springer resolution using a variety defined by the first author. Our main result shows that in the type A case, applying the decompositio…
In this paper we introduce a certain class of families of Hessenberg varieties arising from Springer theory for symmetric spaces. We study the geometry of those Hessenberg varieties and investigate their monodromy representations in detail using the geometry of complete intersections of quadrics. We obtain decompositions of these monodromy representations into irreducibles and compute the Fourier transforms of the IC complexes associated to these irreducible representations. The results of the paper refine (part of) the Springer correspondece for the split symmetric pair (SL(N),SO(N)) in [CVX2…
We define the notion of basic set data for finite groups (building on the notion of basic set, but including an order on the irreducible characters as part of the structure), and we prove that the Springer correspondence provides basic set data for Weyl groups. Then we use this to determine explicitly the modular Springer correspondence for classical types (defined over a base field of odd characteristic $p$, and with coefficients in a field of odd characteristic $\ell\neq p$): the modular case is obtained as a restriction of the ordinary case to a basic set. In order to do so, we compare the …
Consider a complex classical semi-simple Lie group along with the set of its nilpotent coadjoint orbits. When the group is of type A, the set of orbital varieties contained in a given nilpotent orbit is described a set of standard Young tableaux. We parameterize both, the orbital varieties and the irreducible components of unipotent varieties in the other classical groups by sets of standard domino tableaux. The main tools are Spaltenstein's results on signed domino tableaux together with Garfinkle's operations on standard domino tableaux.
This paper is a subsequent paper of math.RT/0607673. Here we consider the irreducible components of Springer fibres (or orbital varieties) for two-column case in GL}_n. We describe the intersection of two irreducible components, and specially give the necessary and sufficient condition for this intersection to be of codimension one. Since an orbital variety in two-column case is a finite union of the Borel orbits, we solve the initial question by determining orbits of codimension one in the closure of a given orbit. We show that they are parameterized by a specific set of involutions called de…
We explain an elementary topological construction of the Springer representation on the homology of (topological) Springer fibers of types C and D in the case of nilpotent endomorphisms with two Jordan blocks. The Weyl group and component group actions admit a diagrammatic description in terms of cup diagrams which appear in the definition of arc algebras of types B and D. We determine the decomposition of the representations into irreducibles and relate our construction to classical Springer theory. As an application we obtain presentations of the cohomology rings of all two-block Springer fi…
In this paper we investigate the growth with respect to $p$ of dimensions of irreducible representations of a semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$. More precisely, it is known that for $p\gg 0$, the irreducibles with a regular rational central character $λ$ and $p$-character $χ$ are indexed by a certain canonical basis in the $K_0$ of the Springer fiber of $χ$. This basis is independent of $p$. For a basis element, the dimension of the corresponding module is a polynomial in $p$. We show that the canonical basis is compatible with the two-sided cell filtration f…
In this paper, we study the affine Springer fiber $\mathcal{F} l_N$ in type $A$ for rectangular type semisimple nil-element $N$ and calculate the relative position between irreducible components. In particular, we use the affine matrix ball construction to show the relative position map is compatible with the Kazhdan-Lusztig cell structure, generalizing the work of Steinberg and van Leeuwen.
In this paper we establish Springer correspondence for the symmetric pair $(\mathrm{SL}(N),\mathrm{SO}(N))$ using Fourier transform, parabolic induction functor, and a nearby cycle sheaves construction due to Grinberg. As applications, we obtain results on cohomology of Hessenberg varieties and geometric constructions of irreducible representations of Hecke algebras of symmetric groups at $q=-1$.
We study the exotic t-structure on the derived category of coherent sheaves on two-block Springer fibre (i.e. for a nilpotent matrix of type (m+n,n) in type A). The exotic t-structure has been defined by Bezrukavnikov and Mirkovic for Springer theoretic varieties in order to study representations of Lie algebras in positive characteristic. Using work of Cautis and Kamnitzer, we construct functors indexed by affine tangles, between categories of coherent sheaves on different two-block Springer fibres (i.e. for different values of n). After checking some exactness properties of these functors, w…
The orbital varieties are the irreducible components of the intersection between a nilpotent orbit and a Borel subalgebra of the Lie algebra of a reductive group. There is a geometric correspondence between orbital varieties and irreducible components of Springer fibers. In type A, a construction due to Richardson implies that every nilpotent orbit contains at least one smooth orbital variety and every Springer fiber contains at least one smooth component. In this paper, we show that this property is also true for the other classical cases. Our proof uses the interpretation of Springer fibers …
The flag variety of a complex reductive linear algebraic group G is by definition the quotient G/B by a Borel subgroup. It can be regarded as the set of Borel subalgebras of Lie(G). Given a nilpotent element e in Lie(G), one calls Springer fiber the subvariety formed by the Borel subalgebras which contain e. Springer fibers have in general a complicated structure (not irreducible, singular). Nevertheless, a theorem by C. De Concini, G. Lusztig, and C. Procesi asserts that, when G is classical, a Springer fiber can always be paved by finitely many subvarieties isomorphic to affine spaces. In th…
We study basic geometric properties of some group analogue of affine Springer fibers and compare with the classical Lie algebra affine Springer fibers. The main purpose is to formulate a conjecture that relates the number of irreducible components of such varieties for a reductive group $G$ to certain weight multiplicities defined by the Langlands dual group $\hat{G}$. We prove our conjecture in the case of unramified conjugacy class.
We provide a direct connection between Springer theory, via Green polynomials, the irreducible representations of the pin cover $\wti W$, a certain double cover of the Weyl group $W$, and an extended Dirac operator for graded Hecke algebras. Our approach leads to a new and uniform construction of the irreducible genuine $\wti W$-characters. In the process, we give a construction of the action by an outer automorphism of the Dynkin diagram on the cohomology groups of Springer theory, and we also introduce a $q$-elliptic pairing for $W$ with respect to the reflection representation $V$. These co…
For a fixed 2-block Springer fiber, we describe the structure of its irreducible components and their relation to the Bialynicki-Birula paving, following work of Fung. That is, we consider the space of complete flags in C^n preserved by a fixed nilpotent matrix with 2 Jordan blocks, and study the action of diagonal matrices commuting with our fixed nilpotent. In particular, we describe the structure of each component, its set of torus fixed points, and prove a conjecture of Fung describing the intersection of any pair. Then we define a convolution algebra structure on the direct sum of the coh…
Let $u\in\mathrm{End}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ be nilpotent. The variety of $u$-stable complete flags is called the Springer fiber over $u$. Its irreducible components are parameterized by a set of standard Young tableaux. The Richardson (resp. Bala-Carter) components of Springer fibers correspond to the Richardson (resp. Bala-Carter) elements of the symmetric group, through Robinson-Schensted correspondence. Every Richardson component is isomorphic to a product of standard flag varieties. On the contrary, the Bala-Carter components are very susceptible to be singular. First, we characterize the singula…
We prove a conjecture which expresses the bigraded Poisson-de Rham homology of the nilpotent cone of a semisimple Lie algebra in terms of the generalized (one-variable) Kostka polynomials, via a formula suggested by Lusztig. This allows us to construct a canonical family of filtrations on the flag variety cohomology, and hence on irreducible representations of the Weyl group, whose Hilbert series are given by the generalized Kostka polynomials. We deduce consequences for the cohomology of all Springer fibers. In particular, this computes the grading on the zeroth Poisson homology of all classi…
In the 40s, Mayer introduced a construction of (simplicial) $p$-complex by using the unsigned boundary map and taking coefficients of chains modulo $p$. We look at such a $p$-complex associated to an $(n-1)$-simplex; in which case, this is also a $p$-complex of representations of the symmetric group of rank $n$ - specifically, of permutation modules associated to two-row compositions. In this article, we calculate the so-called slash homology - a homology theory introduced by Khovanov and Qi - of such a $p$-complex. We show that every non-trivial slash homology group appears as an irreducible …
The Kronecker product of two Schur functions $s_μ$ and $s_ν$, denoted by $s_μ*s_ν$, is the Frobenius characteristic of the tensor product of the irreducible representations of the symmetric group corresponding to the partitions $μ$ and $ν$. The coefficient of $s_λ$ in this product is denoted by $γ^λ_{μν}$, and corresponds to the multiplicity of the irreducible character $χ^λ$ in $χ^μχ^ν.$ We use Sergeev's Formula for a Schur function of a difference of two alphabets and the comultiplication expansion for $s_λ[XY]$ to find closed formulas for the Kronecker coefficients $γ^λ_{μν}$ when $λ$ is an…
We use the Springer correspondence to give a partial characterization of the irreducible representations which appear in the Tymoczko dot-action of the Weyl group on the cohomology ring of a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety. In type A, we apply these techniques to prove that all irreducible summands which appear in the pushforward of the constant sheaf on the universal Hessenberg family have full support. We also observe that the recent results of Brosnan and Chow, which apply the local invariant cycle theorem to the family of regular Hessenberg varieties in type A, extend to arbitrary Li…
We consider two bases for an arbitrary finite dimensional irreducible representation of a complex special linear Lie algebra: the classical Gelfand-Tsetlin basis and the relatively new Chari-Loktev basis. Both are parametrized by the set of (integral Gelfand-Tsetlin) patterns with a fixed bounding sequence determined by the highest weight of the representation. We define the "row-wise dominance" partial order on this set of patterns, and prove that the transition matrix between the two bases is triangular with respect to this partial order. We write down explicit expressions for the diagonal e…
This paper classifies and constructs explicitly all the irreducible representations of affine Hecke algebras of rank two root systems. The methods used to obtain this classification are primarily combinatorial and are, for the most part, an application of the methods used in a recent preprint of Ram. A special effort has been made special effort to describe how the classification here relates to the classifications by Langlands parameters (coming from p-adic group theory) and by indexing triples (coming from a q-analogue of the Springer correspondence). The examples here illustrate and clarify…
We use vertex operators to compute irreducible characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type $A$. Two general formulas are given for the irreducible characters in terms of those of the symmetric groups or the Iwahori-Hecke algebras in lower degrees. Explicit formulas are derived for the irreducible characters labeled by hooks and two-row partitions. Using duality, we also formulate a determinant type Murnaghan-Nakayama formula and give another proof of Ram's combinatorial Murnaghan-Nakayama formula. As applications, we study super-characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra as well as the bitrac…
We define the degenerate two boundary affine Hecke-Clifford algebra $\mathcal{H}_d$, and show it admits a well-defined $\mathfrak{q}(n)$-linear action on the tensor space $M\otimes N\otimes V^{\otimes d}$, where $V$ is the natural module for $\mathfrak{q}(n)$, and $M, N$ are arbitrary modules for $\mathfrak{q}(n)$, the Lie superalgebra of Type Q. When $M$ and $N$ are irreducible highest weight modules parameterized by a staircase partition and a single row, respectively, this action factors through a quotient of $\mathcal{H}_d$. We then construct explicit modules for this quotient, $\mathcal{H…
We consider the decomposition into irreducible components of the external power $Λ^p(\mathbb{C}^m\otimes \mathbb{C}^n)$ regarded as a $\operatorname{GL}_m\times\operatorname{GL}_n$-module. Skew Howe duality implies that the Young diagrams from each pair $(λ,μ)$ which contributes to this decomposition turn out to be conjugate to each other, i.e.~$μ=λ'$. We show that the Young diagram $λ$ which corresponds to a randomly selected irreducible component $(λ,λ')$ has the same distribution as the Young diagram which consists of the boxes with entries $\leq p$ of a random Young tableau of rectangular …
We derive several identities that feature irreducible characters of the general linear, the symplectic, the orthogonal, and the special orthogonal groups. All the identities feature characters that are indexed by shapes that are "nearly" rectangular, by which we mean that the shapes are rectangles except for one row or column that might be shorter than the others. As applications we prove new results in plane partitions and tableaux enumeration, including new refinements of the Bender-Knuth and MacMahon (ex-)conjectures.
For various series of complex semi-simple Lie algebras $\fg (t)$ equipped with irreducible representations $V(t)$, we decompose the tensor powers of $V(t)$ into irreducible factors in a uniform manner, using a tool we call {\it diagram induction}. In particular, we interpret the decompostion formulas of Deligne \cite{del} and Vogel \cite{vog} for decomposing $\fg^{\ot k}$ respectively for the exceptional series and $k\leq 4$ and all simple Lie algebras and $k\leq 3$, as well as new formulas for the other rows of Freudenthal's magic chart. By working with Lie algebras augmented by the symmetry …
