By taking invariants under a variety automorphism, we obtain an explicit algebraic description of the irreducible components of two-row Springer fibers of classical type. We prove an explicit formula for the Poincaré polynomials of parabolic character varieties of Riemann surfaces with semisimple local monodromies, which was conjectured by Hausel, Letellier and Rodriguez-Villegas. This survey paper describes Springer fibers, which are used in one of the earliest examples of a geometric representation. We will compare and contrast them with Schubert varieties, another family of subvarieties of the flag variety that play an important role in representation theory and combinatorics, but whose geometry is in many respects simpler. The end of the paper describes a way that Springer fibers and Schubert varieties are related, as well as open questions.

This paper studies two new kinds of affine Springer fibers that are adapted to the root valuation strata of Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson. In addition it develops various linear versions of Katz's Hodge-Newton decomposition.

We deal with the problem to describe the flags fixed by the torus which belong to a given component of the Springer fiber. We solve the problem in the hook, two-row and two-column cases. We provide two main characterizations which are common to the three cases, and which involve dominance relations between Young diagrams and combinatorial algorithms. Then, for these three cases, we deduce topological properties of the components and their intersections.

Consider a complex classical semi-simple Lie group along with the set of its nilpotent coadjoint orbits. When the group is of type A, the set of orbital varieties contained in a given nilpotent orbit is described a set of standard Young tableaux. We parameterize both, the orbital varieties and the irreducible components of unipotent varieties in the other classical groups by sets of standard domino tableaux. The main tools are Spaltenstein's results on signed domino tableaux together with Garfinkle's operations on standard domino tableaux.
