We classify all generalized del Pezzo surfaces (i.e., minimal desingularizations of singular del Pezzo surfaces containing only rational double points) whose universal torsors are open subsets of hypersurfaces in affine space. Equivalently, their Cox rings are polynomial rings with exactly one relation. For all 30 types with this property, we describe the Cox rings in detail.
These explicit descriptions can be applied to study Manin's conjecture on the asymptotic behavior of the number of rational points of bounded height for singular del Pezzo surfaces, using the universal torsor method.
Following Skorobogatov and Serganova we construct the embeddings of universal torsors over del Pezzo surfaces in the cones over flag varieties, considered as the closed orbits in the projectivization of quasiminiscule representations. We give the approach that allows us to construct the embeddings of universal torsors over del Pezzo surfaces of the degree one. This approach uses the Mumford stability and slightly differs from the approach of the authors named above.
Let Cox(S) be the homogeneous coordinate ring of the blow-up S of P^2 in r general points, i.e., a smooth Del Pezzo surface of degree 9-r. We prove that for r=6 and 7, Proj(Cox(S)) can be embedded into G/P, where G is an algebraic group with root system given by the primitive Picard lattice of S and P is a certain maximal parabolic subgroup in G.
Let S be a split family of del Pezzo surfaces over a discrete valuation ring such that the general fiber is smooth and the special fiber has ADE-singularities. Let G be the reductive group given by the root system of these singularities. We construct a G-torsor over S whose restriction to the generic fiber is the extension of structure group of the universal torsor. This extends a construction of Friedman and Morgan for individual singular del Pezzo surfaces. In case of very good residue characteristic, this torsor is unique and infinitesimally rigid.
We discuss Manin's conjecture concerning the distribution of rational points of bounded height on Del Pezzo surfaces, and its refinement by Peyre, and explain applications of universal torsors to counting problems. To illustrate the method, we provide a proof of Manin's conjecture for the unique split singular quartic Del Pezzo surface with a singularity of type D4. (Lectures at the summer school "Equidistribution in number theory", Montreal, August 2005)
We show that every split del Pezzo surface of degree d=5,4,3 or 2 has a universal torsor which is a dense open subset of the intersection of 6-d dilatations of the affine cone over the corresponding generalized Grassmannian G/P. Here a dilatation is the linear transformation by an element of the 'diagonal' torus. This gives a concise description of the quadratic equations of universal torsors obtained by Popov and Derenthal. Any (possibly, non-split) del Pezzo surface with a rational point has a universal torsor which embeds into the same homogeneous space as a split surface of the same degree…
Let X be a del Pezzo surface of degree 1, and let G be the simple Lie group of type E_8. We construct a locally closed embedding of a universal torsor over X into the G-orbit of the highest weight vector of the adjoint representation. This embedding is equivariant with respect to the action of the Neron-Severi torus T of X identified with a maximal torus of G extended by the group of scalars. The T-invariant hyperplane sections of the torsor defined by the roots of G are inverse images of the 240 exceptional curves on X. This extends the main result of our previous work to del Pezzo surfaces o…
Manin's conjecture for the asymptotic behavior of the number of rational points of bounded height on del Pezzo surfaces can be approached through universal torsors. We prove several auxiliary results for the estimation of the number of integral points in certain regions on universal torsors. As an application, we prove Manin's conjecture for a singular quartic del Pezzo surface.
A conjecture of Manin predicts the distribution of rational points on Fano varieties. We provide a framework for proofs of Manin's conjecture for del Pezzo surfaces over imaginary quadratic fields, using universal torsors. Some of our tools are formulated over arbitrary number fields. As an application, we prove Manin's conjecture over imaginary quadratic fields K for the quartic del Pezzo surface S of singularity type A_3 with five lines given in P^4 by the equations vw - xy = vy + wy + xz = 0.
We consider geometrically cellular varieties $X$ over an arbitrary field of characteristic zero. We study the quotient of the third unramified cohomology group $H^3_{nr}(X,\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}(2))$ by its constant part. For $X$ a smooth compactification of a universal torsor over a geometrically rational surface, we show that this quotient if finite. For $X$ a del Pezzo surface of degree $\geq 5$, we show that this quotient is zero, unless $X$ is a del Pezzo surface of degree 8 of a special type.
Manin's conjecture predicts the distribution of rational points on Fano varieties. Using explicit parameterizations of rational points by integral points on universal torsors and lattice-point-counting techniques, it was proved for several specific varieties over $\mathbb{Q}$, in particular del Pezzo surfaces. We show how this method can be implemented over arbitrary number fields $K$, by proving Manin's conjecture for a singular quartic del Pezzo surface of type $\mathbf{A}_3+\mathbf{A}_1$. The parameterization step is treated in high generality with the help of twisted integral models of uni…
We introduce the split torsor method to count rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties. As an application, we prove Manin's conjecture for all nonsplit quartic del Pezzo surfaces of type $\mathbf A_3+\mathbf A_1$ over arbitrary number fields. The counting problem on the split torsor is solved in the framework of o-minimal structures.
We establish Manin's conjecture for a quartic del Pezzo surface split over Q and having a singularity of type A_3 and containing exactly four lines. It is the first example of split singular quartic del Pezzo surface whose universal torsor is not a hypersurface for which Manin's conjecture is proved.
In his book "Cubic forms" Manin discovered that del Pezzo surfaces are related to root systems. To explain the many numerical coincidences Batyrev conjectured that a universal torsor on a del Pezzo surface can be embedded in a certain projective homogeneous space of the semisimple group with the same root system, equivariantly with respect to the maximal torus action. We prove this conjecture for del Pezzo surfaces of degrees greater than 1. Our proof uses an inductive process based on representations of Lie algebras corresponding to Hermitian symmetric pairs.
We study del Pezzo varieties, higher-dimensional analogues of del Pezzo surfaces. In particular, we introduce ADE classification of del Pezzo varieties, show that in type A the dimension of non-conical del Pezzo varieties is bounded by $12 - d - r$, where $d$ is the degree and $r$ is the rank of the class group, and classify maximal del Pezzo varieties.
We address weak approximation for certain del Pezzo surfaces defined over the function field of a curve. We study the rational connectivity of the smooth locus of degree two del Pezzo surfaces with two A1 singularities in order to prove weak approximation for degree two del Pezzo surfaces with square-free discriminant.
We study del Pezzo fibrations of degree 1 with terminal singularities. A connection between singularities on del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1 and Kodaira's classification of elliptic singular fibers will be studied in this paper. By this investigation we obtain several results on birational maps of del Pezzo fibrations of degree 1 with terminal singularities.
We consider the problem of interpolating projective varieties through points and linear spaces. We show that del Pezzo surfaces satisfy weak interpolation.
We discuss the rational points on del Pezzo surface of degree 1 and 2 over any finite field $\mathbb F_q$, and give out the explicit equations of del Pezzo surfaces that have unique rational point.
We consider del Pezzo surfaces with du Val singularities. We'll prove that a del Pezzo surface $X$ with du Val singularities has a $-K_X$-polar cylinder if and only if there exist tiger such that the support of this tiger does not contain anti-canonical divisor. Also we classify all del Pezzo surfaces $X$ such that $X$ has not any cylinders.
We estimate $δ$-invariants of some singular del Pezzo surfaces with quotient singularities, which we studied ten years ago. As a result, we show that each of these surfaces admits an orbifold Kähler--Einstein metric.
We classify del Pezzo surfaces with Du Val singularities that have infinite automorphism groups, and describe the connected components of their automorphisms groups.
We classify RDP del Pezzo surfaces with global vector fields over arbitrary algebraically closed fields of characteristic $p \neq 2$. In characteristic $0$, every RDP del Pezzo surface $X$ is equivariant, that is, ${\rm Aut}_X = {\rm Aut}_{\widetilde{X}}$, where $\widetilde{X}$ is the minimal resolution of $X$, hence the classification of RDP del Pezzo surfaces with global vector fields is equivalent to the classification of weak del Pezzo surfaces with global vector fields. In this article, we show that if $p \neq 2,3,5,7$, then it is still true that every RDP del Pezzo surface is equivariant…
In this paper we prove that there are exactly two $G$-minimal surfaces which are $G$-birational to the quintic del Pezzo surface, where $G \cong C_5 \rtimes C_4$. These surfaces are the quintic del Pezzo surface itself and the surface $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$.
Log del Pezzo surfaces play the role of the opposite of surfaces of general type. We will completely classify all the log del Pezzo surfaces of rank 2 and Cartier index 3 with a unique singularity.
In this paper, we classify del Pezzo foliations on projective manifolds of rank at least 3 and with log canonical singularities in the sense of McQuillan.
In this paper we prove that del Pezzo fibrations admit $\mathbb{G}_{a}^{3}$-structures if and only if they are $\mathbb{P}^2$-bundles over $\mathbb{P}^{1}$.
We classify almost del Pezzo manifolds in arbitrary dimension n, i.e., projective manifolds X with big and nef anticanonical bundle -K_X, such that -K_X is divisible by n-1.
In this paper we classify nodal rational non-$\mathbb{Q}$-factorial del Pezzo threefolds of degree 2 which can be $G$-birationally rigid for some subgroup $G\subset \operatorname{Aut}(X)$.
We classify Galois actions on Picard lattices of del Pezzo surfaces of degrees 1,2, and 3 giving rise to minimal surfaces with no cohomological obstructions to stable rationality.
For a log del Pezzo surface $S$, the fractional index $r(S)\in\mathbb{Q}_{>0}$ is the maximum of $r$ with which $-K_S$ can be written as $r$ times some Cartier divisor. We classify all the log del Pezzo surfaces $S$ with $r(S)\geq 1/2$, after the technique of Nakayama.
We classify all the effective anticanonical divisors on weak del Pezzo surfaces. Through this classification we obtain the smallest number among the log canonical thresholds of effective anticanonical divisors on a given Gorenstein canonical del Pezzo surface.
In this short note, we study the asymptotic Chow polystability of toric Del Pezzo surfaces appear in the moduli space of Kähler-Einstein Fano varieties constructed in [OSS16].
