We construct configuration spaces for cyclic covers of the projective line that admit extra automorphisms and we describe the locus of curves with given automorphism group. As an application we provide examples of arbitrary high genus that are defined over their field of moduli and are not hyperelliptic.
We study the rigid analytic geometry of cyclic coverings of the projective line. We determine the defining equation of a cyclic covering of degree $p$ of the projective line by a Mumford curve over a complete discrete valuation field of positive characteristic $p$. Previously, Bradley studied that of any degree over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero.
Exact bounds for the positions of the branch points for cyclic coverings of the $p$-adic projective line by Mumford curves are calculated in two ways. Firstly, by using Fumiharu Kato's *-trees, and secondly by giving explicit matrix representations of the Schottky groups corresponding to the Mumford curves above the projective line through combinatorial group theory.
Let $ψ$ be the period map for a family of the cyclic triple coverings of the complex projective line branching at six points. The symmetric group $S_6$ acts on this family and on its image under $ψ.$ In this paper, we give an $S_6$-equivariant expression of $ψ^{-1}$ in terms of fifteen theta constants.
We consider families of cyclic covers of the projective line, where we fix the covering group and the local monodromies and we vary the branch points. We prove that there are precisely twenty such families that give rise to a special subvariety in the moduli space of abelian varieties. Our proof uses techniques in mixed characteristics due to Dwork and Ogus.
We define stacks of uniform cyclic covers of Brauer-Severi schemes, proving that they can be realized as quotient stacks of open subsets of representations, and compute the Picard group for the open substacks parametrizing smooth uniform cyclic covers. Moreover, we give an analogous description for stacks parametrizing triple cyclic covers of Brauer-Severi schemes of rank 1, which are not necessarily uniform, and give a presentation of the Picard group for substacks corresponding to smooth triple cyclic covers.
The main aim of this paper is to show that a cyclic cover of $\mathbb{P}^n$ branched along a very general divisor of degree $d$ is not stably rational provided that $n \ge 3$ and $d \ge n+1$. This generalizes the result of Colliot-Thélène and Pirutka. Generalizations for cyclic covers over complete intersections and applications to suitable Fano manifolds are also discussed.
Let $X$ be a general hypersurface of degree $md$ in the weighted projective space with weights $1,1,1,m$ for some for $d\geq 2$ and $m\geq 3$. We prove that the Seshadri constant of the ample generator of the Néron-Severi space at a general point $x\in X$ lies in the interval $\left[\sqrt{d}- \frac d m, \sqrt{d}\right]$ and thus approaches the possibly irrational number $\sqrt d$ as $m$ grows.
The paper studies a relation between fundamental group of the complement to a plane singular curve and the orbifold pencils containing it. The main tool is the use of Albanese varieties of cyclic covers ramified along such curves. Our results give sufficient conditions for a plane singular curve to belong to an orbifold pencil, i.e. a pencil of plane curves with multiple fibers inducing a map onto an orbifold curve whose orbifold fundamental group is non trivial. We construct an example of a cyclic cover of the projective plane which is an abelian surface isomorphic to the Jacobian of a curve …
The classical Kodaira Vanishing Theorem states that Hi(X, ωX \otimes L) = 0 for i > 0, where X is a smooth projective variety over C and L is an ample line bundle on X. We prove an analogous vanishing result under the assumption that X is a semi-smooth projective variety over C. This is done by passing to the normalization of X, which is a smooth projective variety when X is semi-smooth. The classical vanishing result is proved using a cyclic cover. Therefore we include a proof that the cyclic cover of a demi-normal variety is again demi-normal.
We study cyclic finite Galois extensions of the rational function field of the projective line P^{1}(F_q) over a finite field F_q with q elements defined by considering quotient curves by finite subgroups of the projective linear group PGL(2,q), and we enumerate them expressing the count in terms of Stirling numbers.
In this paper we compute the first vertex of a generic Newton polygon in some special cases, and the corresponding Hasse polynomial. This allows us to show the nonexistence of $p$-cyclic coverings of the projective line in characteristic $p$ with supersingular jacobian for some (infinite families of) genera.
We use tools from combinatorial group theory in order to study actions of three types on groups acting on a curve, namely the automorphism group of a compact Riemann surface, the mapping class group acting on a surface (which now is allowed to have some points removed) and the absolute Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}(\bar{\Q}/\Q)$ in the case of cyclic covers of the projective line.
Let $S$ be a rational surface with $\dim|-K_S|\ge 1$ and let $π: X\rightarrow S$ be a ramified cyclic covering from a nonruled smooth surface $X$. We show that for any integer $k\ge 3$ and ample divisor $A$ on $S$, the adjoint divisor $K_X+kπ^*A$ is very ample and normally generated. Similar result holds for minimal (possibly singular) coverings.
In this note, we introduce the notion of an unramified strongly cyclic covering for a cyclic curve, a class that has similar properties to, and contains, unramified double covers of hyperelliptic curves. We determine several of their basic properties, extending the theorems in \cite{MR2217998} to this larger class. In particular, we will write down equations for smooth affine models, determine when they are isomorphic, and discuss the curves that they are ramified cyclic covers of.
In this paper we study the Galois group of the Galois cover of the composition of a $q$-cyclic étale cover and a cyclic $p$-gonal cover for any odd prime $p$. Furthermore, we give properties of isogenous decompositions of certain Prym and Jacobian varieties associated to intermediate subcovers given by subgroups.
Let X --> P^2 be a p-cyclic cover branched over a smooth, connected curve C of degree divisible by p, defined over a separably closed field of prime-to-p characteristic. We show that all (unramified) p-torsion Brauer classes on X that are fixed by Aut(X/P^2) arise as pullbacks of certain Brauer classes on k(P^2) that are unramified away from C and a fixed line L. We completely characterize these Brauer classes on k(P^2) and relate the kernel of the pullback map to the Picard group of X. If p = 2, we give a second construction, which works over any base field of characteristic not 2, that uses …
We study the $p$-rank stratification of the moduli space of cyclic degree $\ell$ covers of the projective line in characteristic $p$ for distinct primes $p$ and $\ell$. The main result is about the intersection of the $p$-rank $0$ stratum with the boundary of the moduli space of curves. When $\ell=3$ and $p \equiv 2 \bmod 3$ is an odd prime, we prove that there exists a smooth trielliptic curve in characteristic $p$, with every genus $g$, signature type $(r,s)$ and $p$-rank $f$ satisfying the clear necessary conditions.
This paper computes the Galois group of the Galois cover of the composition of an étale double cover of a cyclic $p$-gonal cover for any prime $p$. Moreover a relation between some of its Prym varieties and the Jacobian of a subcover is given. In a sense this generalizes the trigonal construction.
We show that the cyclic and epicyclic categories which play a key role in the encoding of cyclic homology and the lambda operations, are obtained from projective geometry in characteristic one over the infinite semifield F of "max-plus integers". Finite dimensional vector spaces are replaced by modules defined by restriction of scalars from the one-dimensional free module, using the Frobenius endomorphisms of F. The associated projective spaces are finite and provide a mathematically consistent interpretation of J. Tits' original idea of a geometry over the absolute point. The self-duality of …
We study the order of automorphism groups of cyclic covering fibrations of a ruled surface. Arakawa and later Chen studied it for hyperelliptic fibrations and gave the upper bound. The purpose of present paper is to pursue the analog for cyclic covering fibrations.
We give an effective infinitesimal Torelli theorem for cyclic covers of G/P, where G is a simple algebraic group and P is a maximal parabolic subgroup.
In this paper we prove that the Gorenstein cyclic quotient singularities of type \frac 1l (1,..., 1,l-(r-1)) with $l\geq r\geq 2$, have a \textit{unique}torus-equivariant projective, crepant, partial resolution, which is ``full'' iff either $l\equiv 0$ mod $% (r-1) $ or $l\equiv 1$ mod $(r-1) $. As it turns out, if one of these two conditions is fulfilled, then the exceptional locus of the full desingularization consists of $\lfloor \frac{l}{r-1} \rfloor$ prime divisors, $\lfloor \frac{l}{r-1}\rfloor - 1$ of which are isomorphic to the total spaces of $\Bbb{P}_{\Bbb{C}}^1$-bundles over $\Bbb{P…
For a smooth finite cyclic covering over a projective space of dimension greater than one, we show that the group of automorphisms acts faithfully on the cohomology except for a few cases. In characteristic zero, we study the equivariant deformation theory and automorphism groups for complex cyclic coverings. The proof uses the decomposition of the sheaf of differential forms due to Esnault and Viehweg. In positive characteristics, a lifting criterion of automorphisms reduces the faithfulness problem to characteristic zero. To apply this criterion, we prove the degeneration of the Hodge-de Rha…
A smooth scheme $X$ over a field $k$ of positive characteristic is said to be strongly liftable over $W_2(k)$, if $X$ and all prime divisors on $X$ can be lifted simultaneously over $W_2(k)$. In this paper, we give a criterion for that cyclic covers over strongly liftable schemes are still strongly liftable. As a corollary, cyclic covers over projective spaces of dimension at least three are strongly liftable over $W_2(k)$.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ of $\dim X\geq 4$ and Picard number $ρ(X)=1$. Suppose that $X$ satisfies $H^i(X,F^{m*}_X(\Omg^j_X)\otimes\Ls^{-1})=0$ for any ample line bundle $\Ls$ on $X$, and any nonnegative integers $m,i,j$ with $0\leq i+j<\dim X$, where $F_X:X\rightarrow X$ is the absolute Frobenius morphism. We prove that by procedures combining taking smooth hypersurfaces of dimension $\geq 3$ and cyclic covers along smooth divisors, if the resulting smooth projective variety $Y$ has ample (resp. nef) canonical bundle …
We consider normal affine T-varieties X endowed with an action of finite abelian group G commuting with the action of T. For such varieties we establish the existence of G-equivariant geometrico-combinatorial presentations in the sense of Altmann and Hausen. As an application, we determine explicit presentations of the Koras-Russell threefolds as bi-cyclic covers of A^3 equipped with a hyperbolic C^*-action.
Let X be a smooth projective hyperelliptic curve over an algeraically closed field k of prime characteristic p. The aim of this note is to find necessary and sufficient conditions on the automorphism group of the curve X to be lifted to characteristic zero. The results will be generalised for a certain family of curves that we call cyclic curves.
We show that the moduli spaces of non-triple cyclic coverings of genus 2 curves and that of even spin curves of genus 2 are birationally isomorphic via the Prym map. We describe the log canonical models of the moduli space of even spin curves of genus 2 and use this to extend the above birational map.
We study the deformation of $G$-marked stable curves in the case where $G$ is a cyclic group, and construct a parameterizing space for $G$-marked stable curves of a given numerical type. This is then used in order to study the components of the locus of stable curves admitting the action of a cyclic group of non prime order $d$, extending work of F. Catanese in the case where $d$ is prime.
We prove that the universal cover of a normal, projective variety X is quasi-projective if and only if a finite, étale cover of X is a fiber bundle over an Abelian variety with simply connected fiber.
We study slopes of finite cyclic covering fibrations of a fibered surface. We give the best possible lower bound of the slope of these fibrations. We also give the slope equality of finite cyclic covering fibrations of a ruled surface and observe the local concentration of the global signature of these surfaces on a finite number of fiber germs. We also give an upper bound of the slope of finite cyclic covering fibrations of a ruled surface.
We study the stack B_{h,g,n} of uniform cyclic covers of degree n between smooth curves of genus h and g and, for h >> g, present it as an open substack of a vector bundle over the universal Jacobian stack of M_g. We use this description to compute the integral Picard group of B_{h,g,n}, showing that it is generated by tautological classes of B_{h,g,n}.
In a previous paper, the authors proved that the Prym variety of any non-cyclic etale triple cover of a smooth curve of genus 2 is a Jacobian variety of dimension 2. This gives a map from the moduli space of such covers to the moduli space of Jacobian varieties of dimension 2. We extend this map to a proper map of a certain moduli space of admissible $S_3$-covers of genus 7 to the moduli space of principally polarized abelian surfaces. The main result is that this map is finite surjective of degree 10.
Suppose K is a field of characteristic 0, $K_a$ is its algebraic closure, p is an odd prime. Suppose, $f(x) \in K[x]$ is a polynomial of degree $n \ge 5$ without multiple roots. Let us consider a curve $C: y^p=f(x)$ and its jacobian J(C). It is known that the ring End(J(C)) of all $K_a$-endomorphisms of J(C) contains the ring $Z[ζ_p]$ of integers in the pth cyclotomic field (generated by obvious automorphisms of C). We prove that $End(J(C))=Z[ζ_p]$ if the Galois group of f over K is either the symmetric group $S_n$ or the alternating group $A_n$.
We study cyclic covering morphisms from $\bar{M}_{0,n}$ to moduli spaces of unpointed stable curves of positive genus or compactified moduli spaces of principally polarized abelian varieties. Our main application is a construction of new semipositive vector bundles and nef divisors on $\bar{M}_{0,n}$, with a view toward the F-conjecture. In particular, we construct new extremal rays of the symmetric nef cone of $\bar{M}_{0,n}$. We also find an alternate description of all sl level 1 conformal blocks divisors on $\bar{M}_{0,n}$.
Given a variety $Y$ with a rectangular Lefschetz decomposition of its derived category, we consider a degree $n$ cyclic cover $X \to Y$ ramified over a divisor $Z \subset Y$. We construct semiorthogonal decompositions of $\mathrm{D^b}(X)$ and $\mathrm{D^b}(Z)$ with distinguished components $\mathcal{A}_X$ and $\mathcal{A}_Z$, and prove the equivariant category of $\mathcal{A}_X$ (with respect to an action of the $n$-th roots of unity) admits a semiorthogonal decomposition into $n-1$ copies of $\mathcal{A}_Z$. As examples we consider quartic double solids, Gushel-Mukai varieties, and cyclic cub…
In this paper, we list all cyclic automorphisms subgroups $H$ for which there exists a smooth projective non-hyperelliptic sextic curve $C$ with $H\preceq Aut(C)$. Furthermore, we attach to each group a defining equation of a plane sextic curve having exactly this group as cyclic automorphisms subgroup. These equations cover up to isomorphism all plane non-singular sextic curves having some non-trivial automorphism.
We study the endomorphism ring $End(J(C))$ of the complex jacobian $J(C)$ of a curve $y^p=f(x)$ where $p$ is an odd prime and $f(x)$ is a polynomial with complex coefficiens of degree $n>4$ and without multiple roots. Assume that all the coefficients of $f$ lie in a (sub)field $K$ and the Galois group of $f$ over $K$ is either the full symmetric group $S_n$ or the alternating group $A_n$. Then we prove that $End(J(C))$ is the ring of integers in the in the $p$th cyclotomic field, if $p$ is a Fermat prime (e.g., $p=3,5,17,257$). Similar results for $p=2$ (the case of hyperelliptic curves) were …
Given a ring of ternions $R$, i. e., a ring isomorphic to that of upper triangular $2\times 2$ matrices with entries from an arbitrary commutative field $F$, a complete classification is performed of the vectors from the free left $R$-module $R^{n+1}$, $n \geq 1$, and of the cyclic submodules generated by these vectors. The vectors fall into $5 + |F|$ and the submodules into 6 distinct orbits under the action of the general linear group $\GL_{n+1}(R)$. Particular attention is paid to {\it free} cyclic submodules generated by \emph{non}-unimodular vectors, as these are linked with the lines of …
Let $X$ be a smooth, projective and geometrically connected curve of genus at least two, defined over a number field. In 1984, Szpiro conjectured that $X$ has a "small point". In this paper we prove that if $X$ is a cyclic cover of prime degree of the projective line, then $X$ has infinitely many "small points". In particular, we establish the first cases of Szpiro's small points conjecture, including the genus two case and the hyperelliptic case. The proofs use Arakelov theory for arithmetic surfaces and the theory of logarithmic forms.
Motivated by the Milnor fiber of a central arrangement, we study the cohomology of a family of cyclic covers of the complement of an arbitrary arrangement. We give an explicit proof of the polynomial periodicity of the Betti numbers of the members of this family of cyclic covers.
We examine some recent work of Phillip Griffith on étale covers and fibered products from the point of view of tight closure theory. While it is known that cyclic covers of Gorenstein rings with rational singularities are Cohen-Macaulay, we show this is not true in general in the absence of the Gorenstein hypothesis. Specifically, we show that the canonical cover of a $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein ring with rational singularities need not be Cohen-Macaulay.
This note uses some recent calculations of Conder and Bujalance (on classifying finite index group extensions of Fuchsian groups with abelian quotient and torsion free kernel) in order to determine the full automorphism groups of some cylic coverings of the line (including curves of Fermat and Lefschetz type). The answer is complete for cyclic covers that branch over three points.
We prove finiteness results for sets of varieties over number fields with good reduction outside a given finite set of places using cyclic covers. We obtain a version of the Shafarevich conjecture for weighted projective surfaces, double covers of abelian varieties, and reduce the Shafarevich conjecture for hypersurfaces to the case of hypersurfaces of high dimension. These are special cases of a general set-up for integral points on moduli stacks of cyclic covers, and our arithmetic results are achieved via a version of the Chevalley-Weil theorem for stacks.
We prove that a cyclic cover of a smooth complex projective variety is Brody hyperbolic if its branch divisor is a generic small deformation of a large enough multiple of a Brody hyperbolic base-point-free ample divisor. We also show the hyperbolicity of complements of those branch divisors. As an application, we find new examples of Brody hyperbolic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ that are cyclic covers of $\mathbb{P}^n$.
We prove irreducibility for the space of cyclic covers of fixed numerical type between smooth projective curves, and also for the space of cyclic covers of prime order and of fixed numerical-combinatorial type between moduli-stable projective curves. As an application we describe the irreducible components of the singular locus of the compactified moduli space of curves $\bar{\mahfrak M_g}$, extending the work of Cornalba, who described the irreducible components of the singular locus of the moduli space of curves $\mahfrak M_g}$.
