The object of this paper is the notion of r-spin structure: a line bundle whose r-th power is isomorphic to the canonical bundle. Over the moduli functor M_g of smooth genus-$g$ curves, $r$-spin structures form a finite torsor under the group of r-torsion line bundles. Over the moduli functor Mbar_g of stable curves, r-spin structures form an 'etale stack, but the finiteness and the torsor structure are lost.
In the present work, we show how this bad picture can be definitely improved simply by placing the problem in the category of Abramovich and Vistoli's twisted curves. First, we find that within such category there exist several different compactifications of M_g; each one corresponds to a different multiindex \ell=(l0,l1,...) identifying a notion of stability: \ell-stability. Then, we determine the suitable choices of \ell for which r-spin structures form a finite torsor over the moduli of \ell-stable curves.
This paper presents two kinds of division polynomials for twisted Edwards curves. Their chief property is that they characterise the $n$-torsion points of a given twisted Edwards curve. We also present results concerning the coefficients of these polynomials, which may aid computation.

We find all K-polystable smooth Fano threefolds that can be obtained as blowup of projective space along the disjoint union of a twisted cubic curve and a line.
In this note we give a new, natural construction of a compactification of the stack of smooth r-spin curves, which we call the stack of stable twisted $r$-spin curves. This stack is identified with a special case of a stack of twisted stable maps of Abramovich and Vistoli. Realizations in terms of admissible G_m-spaces and Q-line bundles are given as well. The infinitesimal structure of this stack is described in a relatively straightforward manner, similar to that of usual stable curves. We construct representable morphisms from the stacks of stable twisted r-spin curves to the stacks of stab…
Let X be a smooth projective Deligne-Mumford stack over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0. In this paper we construct the moduli stack of very twisted stable maps, extending the notion of twisted stable maps by Abramovich and Vistoli to allow for generic stabilizers on the source curves. We also consider the Gromov-Witten theory given by this construction.
The goal of the present paper is to construct a smooth compactification of the moduli superstack classifying pointed $\mathcal{N} =1$ SUSY (= $\text{SUSY}_1$) curves. This construction is based on the Abramovich-Jarvis-Chiodo compactification of the moduli stack classifying spin curves. First, we give a general framework of a theory of log superschemes (or more generally, log superstacks). Then, we introduce the notion of a pointed (stable) log twisted $\text{SUSY}_1$ curve; it may be thought of as a logarithmic and twisted generalization of the classical notion of a pointed $\text{SUSY}_1$ cu…
We establish a striking connection between Abramovich's and Vistoli's twisted bundles and Gieseker vector bundles. This note grew out of an attempt to understand a recent draft of Seshadri.
In this paper we introduce the stack of polarized twisted conics and we use it to give a new point of view on $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_2$. In particular, we present a new and independent approach to the computation of the integral Chow ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_2$, previously determined by Eric Larson.
On a space of stable maps, the psi classes are modified by subtracting certain boundary divisors. The top products of modified psi classes, usual psi classes, and classes pulled back along the evaluation maps are called twisted descendants; it is shown that in genus 0, they admit a complete recursion and are determined by the Gromov-Witten invariants. One motivation for this construction is that all characteristic numbers (of rational curves) can be interpreted as twisted descendants; this is explained in the second part, using pointed tangency classes. As an example, some of Schubert's number…
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective curve of genus $g$ and let $L$ be a line bundle on $X$ with $\mathrm{deg}\,L>0$. Let $\mathbf{M}$ be the moduli space of semistable rank 2 $L$-twisted Higgs bundles with trivial determinant on $X$. Let $\mathbf{M}_{X}$ be the moduli space of stable rank 2 $L$-twisted Higgs bundles with determinant $\mathcal{O}(-x)$ for some $x\in X$ on $X$. We construct a cycle in the product of a stack of rational maps from nonsingular curves to $\mathbf{M}_{X}$ and $\mathrm{Pic}^{2\mathrm{deg}\,L}(X)$ by using Hecke modifications of a stable $L$-twisted Higgs bundle in …
We construct a smooth Artin stack parameterizing the stable weighted curves of genus one with twisted fields and prove that it is isomorphic to the blowup stack of the moduli of genus one weighted curves studied by Hu and Li. This leads to a blowup-free construction of Vakil-Zinger's desingularization of the moduli of genus one stable maps to projective spaces. This construction provides the cornerstone of the theory of stacks with twisted fields, which is thoroughly studied in arXiv:2005.03384 and leads to a blowup-free resolution of the stable map moduli of genus two.
The enumerative geometry of r-th roots of line bundles is the subject of Witten's conjecture and occurs in the calculation of Gromov-Witten invariants of orbifolds. It requires the definition of the suitable compact moduli stack and the generalization of the standard techniques from the theory of moduli of stable curves. In math.AG/0603687, we construct a compact stack by describing the notion of stability in the context of twisted curves. In this paper, by working with stable twisted curves, we extend Mumford's formula for the Chern character of the Hodge bundle to the direct image of the uni…
Let $C$ be a smooth, projective and geometrically connected curve defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q(C)$. Given a semisimple $C-S$-group scheme $\underline{G}$ where $S$ is a finite set of closed points of $C$, we describe the set of ($\mathcal{O}_S$-classes of) twisted forms of $\underline{G}$ in terms of geometric invariants of its fundamental group $F(\underline{G})$.
We use the theory of twisted stable maps to Deligne-Mumford stacks to construct compactifications of the moduli space of pairs $(X \to C, S + F)$ where $X \to C$ is a fibered surface, $S$ is a sum of sections, $F$ is a sum of marked fibers, and $(X, S + F)$ is a stable pair in the sense of the minimal model program. This generalizes the work of Abramovich-Vistoli, who compactified the moduli space of fibered surfaces without marked fibers. Furthermore, we compare our compactification to Alexeev's space of stable maps and the KSBA compactification of stable pairs. As an application, we describe…
We introduce a procedure for constructing a generalized elliptic curve from a genus-one twisted curve, and we use this procedure to define an explicit, modular isomorphism between two compactifications of moduli stacks of elliptic curves with level structure.
Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a tame proper Deligne-Mumford stack of the form $[M/G]$ where $M$ is a scheme and $G$ is an algebraic group. We prove that the stack $\mathcal{K}_{g,n}(\mathcal{X},d)$ of twisted stable maps is a quotient stack and can be embedded into a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack. When $G$ is finite, we give a more precise construction of $\mathcal{K}_{g,n}(\mathcal{X},d)$ using Hilbert schemes and admissible $G$-covers.

We revisit the work of Lehn-Lehn-Sorger-van Straten on twisted cubic curves in a cubic fourfold not containing a plane in terms of moduli spaces. We show that the blow-up $Z'$ along the cubic of the irreducible holomorphic symplectic eightfold $Z$, described by the four authors, is isomorphic to an irreducible component of a moduli space of Gieseker stable torsion sheaves or rank three torsion free sheaves. For a very general such cubic fourfold, we show that $Z$ is isomorphic to a connected component of a moduli space of tilt-stable objects in the derived category and to a moduli space of Bri…
In his previous paper, the author proposed as a problem a purely inseparable analogue of the Abhyankar conjecture for affine curves in positive characteristic and gave a partial answer to it, which includes a complete answer for finite local nilpotent group schemes. In the present paper, motivated by the Abhyankar conjectures with restricted ramifications due to Harbater and Pop, we study a refined version of the analogous problem, based on a recent work on tamely ramified torsors due to Biswas-Borne, which is formulated in terms of root stacks. We study an embedding problem to conclude that t…
The moduli space of canonical divisors (with prescribed zeros and poles) on nonsingular curves is not compact since the curve may degenerate. We define a proper moduli space of twisted canonical divisors in the moduli space of Deligne-Mumford stable pointed curves which includes the space of canonical divisors as an open subset. The theory leads to geometric/combinatorial constraints on the closures of the moduli spaces of canonical divisors. In case the differentials have at least one pole (the strictly meromorphic case), the moduli spaces of twisted canonical divisors on genus g curves are o…
This paper is a continuation of our earlier development of a theory of tame Artin stacks. Our main goal here is the construction of an appropriate analogue of Kontsevich's space of stable maps in the case where the target is a tame Artin stack. When the target is a tame Deligne--Mumford stack, the theory was developed by Abramovich and Vistoli, and found a number of applications. The theory for arbitrary tame Artin stacks developed here is very similar, but it is necessary to overcome a number of technical hurdles and to generalize a few questions of foundation.
We consider the Alexander polynomial of a plane algebraic curve twisted by a linear representation. We show that it divides the product of the polynomials of the singularity links, for unitary representations. Moreover, their quotient is given by the determinant of its Blanchfield intersection form. Specializing in the classical case, this gives a geometrical interpretation of Libgober's divisibility Theorem. We calculate twisted polynomials for some algebraic curves and show how they can detect Zariski pairs of equivalent Alexander polynomials and that they are sensitive to nodal degeneration…
We extend the geometric approach to vertex algebras developed by the first author to twisted modules, allowing us to treat orbifold models in conformal field theory. Let $V$ be a vertex algebra, $H$ a finite group of automorphisms of $V$, and $C$ an algebraic curve such that $H \subset \on{Aut}(C)$. We show that a suitable collection of twisted $V$--modules gives rise to a section of a certain sheaf on the quotient $X=C/H$. We introduce the notion of conformal blocks for twisted modules, and analyze them in the case of the Heisenberg and affine Kac-Moody vertex algebras. We also give a chiral …
Let $X_D$ denote the Hilbert modular surface $\HH \times \HH^- / \SL_2(\OD)$. In \cite{HZ76}, F. Hirzebruch and D. Zagier introduced Hirzebruch-Zagier cycles, that could also be called twisted diagonals. These are maps $\HH \to \HH \times \HH^-$ given by $z \mapsto (Mz,-M^σz)$ where $M \in \GL_2^+(K)$ and $σ$ denotes the Galois conjugate. The projection of a twisted diagonal to $X_D$ yields a Kobayashi curve, i.e. an algebraic curve which is a geodesic for the Kobayashi metric on $X_D$. Properties of Hirzebruch-Zagier cycles have been abundantly studied in the literature.\\Teichmüller curves a…
Hausel and Rodriguez-Villegas conjectured that the intersection form on the moduli space of stable PGL_n-Higgs bundles on a curve vanishes if the degree is coprime to n. In this note we prove this conjecture. Along the way we show that moduli spaces of stable chains are irreducible for stability parameters larger than the stability condition induced form stability of Higgs bundles.
By definition, the del Pezzo $3$-fold $V_5$ is the intersection of $\mathrm{Gr}(2,5)$ with three hyperplanes in $\mathbb{P}^9$ under the Plücker embedding. Rational curves in $V_5$ have been studied in various contents of Fano geometry. In this paper, we propose an explicit birational relation of the Kontsevich and Simpson compactifications of twisted cubic curves in $V_5$. As a direct corollary, we obtain a desingularized model of Kontsevich compactification which induces the intersection cohomology group of Kontsevich's space.
Let $M_g$ be the moduli space of smooth genus $g$ curves. We define a notion of Chow groups of $M_g$ with coefficients in a representation of $Sp(2g)$, and we define a subgroup of tautological classes in these Chow groups with twisted coefficients. Studying the tautological groups of $M_g$ with twisted coefficients is equivalent to studying the tautological rings of all fibered powers $C_g^n$ of the universal curve $C_g \to M_g$ simultaneously. By taking the direct sum over all irreducible representations of the symplectic group in fixed genus, one obtains the structure of a twisted commutativ…
Abramovich, Corti and Vistoli have studied modular compactifications of stacks of curves equipped with abelian level structures arising as substacks of the stack of twisted stable maps into the classifying stack of a finite group, provided the order of the group is invertible on the base scheme. Recently Abramovich, Olsson and Vistoli extended the notion of twisted stable maps to allow arbitrary base schemes, where the target is a tame stack, not necessarily Deligne-Mumford. We use this to extend the results of Abramovich, Corti and Vistoli to the case of elliptic curves with level structures …

We study moduli of semistable twisted sheaves on smooth proper morphisms of algebraic spaces. In the case of a relative curve or surface, we prove results on the structure of these spaces. For curves, they are essentially isomorphic to spaces of semistable vector bundles. In the case of surfaces, we show (under a mild hypothesis on the twisting class) that the spaces are asympotically geometrically irreducible, normal, generically smooth, and l.c.i. over the base. We also develop general tools necessary for these results: the theory of associated points and purity of sheaves on Artin stacks, t…
We define two equivalent notions of twisted stable map from a curve to a Deligne-Mumford stack with projective moduli space, and we prove that twisted stable maps of fixed degree form a complete Deligne-Mumford stack with projective moduli space.
We explain the correspondences between twisted monopoles with Dirac type singularity and polystable twisted mini-holomorphic bundles with Dirac type singularity on a 3-dimensional torus. We also explain that they are equivalent to polystable parabolic twisted difference modules on elliptic curves.
Let $V$ be a vector bundle over a smooth curve $C$. In this paper, we study twisted Brill--Noether loci parametrising stable bundles $E$ of rank $n$ and degree $e$ with the property that $h^0 (C, V \otimes E) \ge k$. We prove that, under conditions similar to those of Teixidor i Bigas and of Mercat, the Brill-Noether loci are nonempty, and in many cases have a component which is generically smooth and of the expected dimension. Along the way, we prove the irreducibility of certain components of both twisted and "nontwisted" Brill--Noether loci. We describe the tangent cones to the twisted Bril…
We give an explicit description of all 168 quartic curves over the field of two elements that are isomorphic to the Klein curve over an algebraic extension. Some of the curves have been known for their small class number, others for attaining the maximal number of rational points.
We study the algebraic geometry of twisted Higgs bundles of cyclic type along complex curves. These objects, which generalize ordinary cyclic Higgs bundles, can be identified with representations of a cyclic quiver in a twisted category of coherent sheaves. Referring to the Hitchin fibration, we produce a fibre-wise geometric description of the locus of such representations within the ambient twisted Higgs moduli space. When the genus is 0, we produce a concrete geometric identification of the moduli space as a vector bundle over an associated (twisted) A-type quiver variety; we count the numb…
Let C be a generic curve, E a generic vector bundle on C. Then, for every line bundle on C the twisted Petri map P:H^0(C,L\otimes E)\otimes H^0(C, K\otimes L^*\otimes E^{*})--> H^0(C, K) is injective.
We prove a closed formula counting semistable twisted Higgs bundles of fixed rank and degree over a smooth projective curve defined over a finite field. We also prove a formula for the Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the moduli spaces of twisted Higgs bundles over a curve.
The cherry on top of this stacky paper is the following: for any g>1 we give a finite group G such that the moduli space of connected admissible G-covers of genus g is a smooth, fine moduli space, which is a Galois cover of the moduli space of stable curves. The proof relies on methods introduced by Looijenga and Pikaart-De Jong, and on the theory of twisted G-covers, a theory announced without proofs in math.AG/9811059, section 3, and developed in the first few sections of this paper. This includes a moduli description of the normalization of the Harris-Mumford space of admissible covers, and…
We present a definition of {\em twisted motivic Chern classes} for singular pairs $(X,Δ)$ consisting of a singular space $X$ and a $\mathbb Q$-Cartier divisor containing the singularities of $X$. The definition is a mixture of the construction of motivic Chern classes previously defined by Brasselet-Sch{ü}rmann-Yokura with the construction of multiplier ideals. The twisted motivic Chern classes are the limits of the elliptic classes defined by Borisov-Libgober. We show that with a suitable choice of the divisor $Δ$ the twisted motivic Chern classes satisfy the axioms of the stable envelopes in…
This is a review article on some applications of generalised parabolic structures to the study of torsion free sheaves and $L$-twisted Hitchin pairs on nodal curves. In particular, we survey on the relation between representations of the fundamental group of a nodal curve and the moduli spaces of generalised parabolic bundles and generalised parabolic $L$-twisted Hitchin pairs on its normalisation as well as on an analogue of the Hitchin map for generalised parabolic $L$-twisted Hitchin pairs.
We introduce in this note the notion of the category of twisted Chow-Witt correspondences $CHW(k)$ over a field $k$ of characteristic different from $2$. Moreover, we show that over an infinite perfect field this category $CHW(k)$ admits a fully faithful embedding into the geometric stable $\A^1$-derived category $D_{\A^1,gm}(k)$ after taking $\Q$-localization. We also prove a conjecture of F. Morel about the rational splitting of stable $\A^1$-cohomology over an essentially smooth scheme $S$ over a field $k$ of $char(k) \neq 2$.
Witten's gauged linear sigma model [Wi1] is one of the universal frameworks or structures that lie behind stringy dualities. Its A-twisted moduli space at genus 0 case has been used in the Mirror Principle [L-L-Y] that relates Gromov-Witten invariants and mirror symmetry computations. In this paper the A-twisted moduli stack for higher genus curves is defined and systematically studied. It is proved that such a moduli stack is an Artin stack. For genus 0, it has the A-twisted moduli space of [M-P] as the coarse moduli space. The detailed proof of the regularity of the collapsing morphism by Ju…
