We construct a smooth algebraic stack of tuples consisting of genus two nodal curves, simple effective divisors away from the nodes, and twisted fields. It provides a desingularization of the moduli of genus two stable maps to projective spaces. The construction is based on systematic application of the theory of stacks with twisted fields (STF), which has its prototype appeared in arXiv:1201.2427 and arXiv:1906.10527 and is fully developed in this article. As a byproduct of the STF theory, we also obtain a novel desingularization of the moduli of genus one stable maps to projective spaces, which is isomorphic to the blowup that reverses the order used by Vakil-Zinger and Hu-Li. The results of this article are the second step of a program toward the resolutions of the moduli of stable maps of higher genera.
We construct a smooth Artin stack parameterizing the stable weighted curves of genus one with twisted fields and prove that it is isomorphic to the blowup stack of the moduli of genus one weighted curves studied by Hu and Li. This leads to a blowup-free construction of Vakil-Zinger's desingularization of the moduli of genus one stable maps to projective spaces. This construction provides the cornerstone of the theory of stacks with twisted fields, which is thoroughly studied in arXiv:2005.03384 and leads to a blowup-free resolution of the stable map moduli of genus two.
In this paper we introduce the stack of polarized twisted conics and we use it to give a new point of view on $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_2$. In particular, we present a new and independent approach to the computation of the integral Chow ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_2$, previously determined by Eric Larson.
We find a new presentation of the stack of hyperelliptic curves of odd genus as a quotient stack and we use it to compute its integral Chow ring by means of equivariant intersection theory.
We compute the integral Chow ring of the stack of smooth, non-hyperelliptic curves of genus three. We obtain this result by computing the integral Chow ring of the stack of smooth plane quartics, by means of equivariant intersection theory.
Stacks were introduced by Grothendieck and Giraud and are, roughly speaking, sheaves of categories. Kashiwara developed the theory of twisted modules, which are objects of stacks locally equivalent to stacks of modules over sheaves of rings. In this paper we recall these notions, and we develop the formalism of operations for stacks of twisted modules. As an application, we state a twisted version of an adjunction formula which is of use in the theory of integral transforms for sheaves and D-modules.
In this note we give a new, natural construction of a compactification of the stack of smooth r-spin curves, which we call the stack of stable twisted $r$-spin curves. This stack is identified with a special case of a stack of twisted stable maps of Abramovich and Vistoli. Realizations in terms of admissible G_m-spaces and Q-line bundles are given as well. The infinitesimal structure of this stack is described in a relatively straightforward manner, similar to that of usual stable curves. We construct representable morphisms from the stacks of stable twisted r-spin curves to the stacks of stab…
We generalize the First Reconstruction Theorem of Kontsevich and Manin in two respects. First, we allow the target space to be a Deligne-Mumford stack. Second, under some convergence assumptions, we show it suffices to check the hypothesis of $H^2$-generation not on the cohomology ring, but on an any quantum ring in the family given by small quantum cohomology.
Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a tame proper Deligne-Mumford stack of the form $[M/G]$ where $M$ is a scheme and $G$ is an algebraic group. We prove that the stack $\mathcal{K}_{g,n}(\mathcal{X},d)$ of twisted stable maps is a quotient stack and can be embedded into a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack. When $G$ is finite, we give a more precise construction of $\mathcal{K}_{g,n}(\mathcal{X},d)$ using Hilbert schemes and admissible $G$-covers.
This paper is a continuation of our earlier development of a theory of tame Artin stacks. Our main goal here is the construction of an appropriate analogue of Kontsevich's space of stable maps in the case where the target is a tame Artin stack. When the target is a tame Deligne--Mumford stack, the theory was developed by Abramovich and Vistoli, and found a number of applications. The theory for arbitrary tame Artin stacks developed here is very similar, but it is necessary to overcome a number of technical hurdles and to generalize a few questions of foundation.
For any number field, we prove that there exists a stacky curve of genus one half defined over the ring of its integers violating the local-global principle for integral points.
We discuss the possibility of Mathieu group M24 acting as symmetry group on the K3 elliptic genus as proposed recently by Ooguri, Tachikawa and one of the present authors. One way of testing this proposal is to derive the twisted elliptic genera for all conjugacy classes of M24 so that we can determine the unique decomposition of expansion coefficients of K3 elliptic genus into irreducible representations of M24. In this paper we obtain all the hitherto unknown twisted elliptic genera and find a strong evidence of Mathieu moonshine.
We study derived equivalences of certain stacks over genus $1$ curves, which arise as connected components of the Picard stack of a genus $1$ curve. To this end, we develop a theory of integral transforms for these algebraic stacks. We use this theory to answer the question of when two stacky genus $1$ curves are derived equivalent. We use integral transforms and intersection theory on stacks to answer the following questions: if $C'=Pic^d(C)$, is $C=Pic^f(C')$ for some integer $f$? If $C'=Pic^d(C)$ and $C''=Pic^f(C')$, then is $C''=Pic^g(C)$ for some integer $g$?
We compute the Picard group of the moduli stack of smooth curves of genus $g$ for $3\leq g\leq 5$, using methods of equivariant intersection theory. We base our proof on the computation of some relations in the integral Chow ring of certain moduli stacks of smooth complete intersections. As a byproduct, we compute the cycle classes of some divisors on $\mathcal{M}_g$.
Automorphisms of a perfect complex naturally have the structure of an $\infty$-group: the 1-morphisms are quasi-isomorphisms, the 2-morphisms are homotopies, etc. This article starts by proving some basic properties of this $\infty$-group. We go on to study the deformation theory of this stack of $\infty$-groups and give a criterion for this stack to be formally smooth. The classifying stack of this $\infty$-group classifies forms of a complex. We discuss a version of Hilbert 90 for perfect complexes.
Witten's gauged linear sigma model [Wi1] is one of the universal frameworks or structures that lie behind stringy dualities. Its A-twisted moduli space at genus 0 case has been used in the Mirror Principle [L-L-Y] that relates Gromov-Witten invariants and mirror symmetry computations. In this paper the A-twisted moduli stack for higher genus curves is defined and systematically studied. It is proved that such a moduli stack is an Artin stack. For genus 0, it has the A-twisted moduli space of [M-P] as the coarse moduli space. The detailed proof of the regularity of the collapsing morphism by Ju…
Let X be a smooth projective Deligne-Mumford stack over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0. In this paper we construct the moduli stack of very twisted stable maps, extending the notion of twisted stable maps by Abramovich and Vistoli to allow for generic stabilizers on the source curves. We also consider the Gromov-Witten theory given by this construction.
We use the mirror theorem for toric Deligne-Mumford stacks, proved recently by the authors and by Cheong-Ciocan-Fontanine-Kim, to compute genus-zero Gromov-Witten invariants of a number of toric orbifolds and gerbes. We prove a mirror theorem for a class of complete intersections in toric Deligne-Mumford stacks, and use this to compute genus-zero Gromov-Witten invariants of an orbifold hypersurface.
The Gromov-Witten theory of Deligne-Mumford stacks is a recent development, and hardly any computations have been done beyond 3-point genus 0 invariants. This paper provides explicit recursions which, together with some invariants computed by hand, determine all genus 0 invariants of the stack P^2_{D,2}. Here D is a smooth plane curve and P^2_{D,2} is locally isomorphic to the stack quotient [U/(Z/(2))], where U -> V \subset P^2 is a double cover branched along D \cap V. The introduction discusses an enumerative application of these invariants.
The Hilbert scheme of point modules was introduced by Artin-Tate-Van den Bergh to study non-commutative graded algebras. The key tool is the construction of a map from the algebra to a twisted ring on this Hilbert scheme. In this paper, we study moduli stacks of more general "fat" point modules, and show that there is a similar map to a twisted ring associated to the stack. This is used to provide a sufficient criterion for a non-commutative projective surface to be birationally PI. It is hoped that such a criterion will be useful in understanding Mike Artin's conjecture on the birational clas…
Let $M_g$ be the moduli space of smooth genus $g$ curves. We define a notion of Chow groups of $M_g$ with coefficients in a representation of $Sp(2g)$, and we define a subgroup of tautological classes in these Chow groups with twisted coefficients. Studying the tautological groups of $M_g$ with twisted coefficients is equivalent to studying the tautological rings of all fibered powers $C_g^n$ of the universal curve $C_g \to M_g$ simultaneously. By taking the direct sum over all irreducible representations of the symplectic group in fixed genus, one obtains the structure of a twisted commutativ…
Twisted Gromov-Witten invariants are intersection numbers in moduli spaces of stable maps to a manifold or orbifold X which depend in addition on a vector bundle over X and an invertible multiplicative characteristic class. Special cases are closely related to local Gromov-Witten invariants of the bundle, and to genus-zero one-point invariants of complete intersections in X. We develop tools for computing genus-zero twisted Gromov-Witten invariants of orbifolds and apply them to several examples. We prove a "quantum Lefschetz theorem" which expresses genus-zero one-point Gromov-Witten invarian…
Abramovich, Corti and Vistoli have studied modular compactifications of stacks of curves equipped with abelian level structures arising as substacks of the stack of twisted stable maps into the classifying stack of a finite group, provided the order of the group is invertible on the base scheme. Recently Abramovich, Olsson and Vistoli extended the notion of twisted stable maps to allow arbitrary base schemes, where the target is a tame stack, not necessarily Deligne-Mumford. We use this to extend the results of Abramovich, Corti and Vistoli to the case of elliptic curves with level structures …
In this paper we study the moduli stack ${\mathcal U}_{1,n}^{ns}$ of curves of arithmetic genus 1 with n marked points, forming a nonspecial divisor. In arXiv:1511.03797 this stack was realized as the quotient of an explicit scheme $\widetilde{\mathcal U}_{1,n}^{ns}$, affine of finite type over ${\Bbb P}^{n-1}$, by the action of ${\Bbb G}_m^n$ . Our main result is an explicit description of the corresponding GIT semistable loci in $\widetilde{\mathcal U}_{1,n}^{ns}$. This allows us to identify some of the GIT quotients with some of the modular compactifications of ${\mathcal M}_{1,n}$ defined …
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective algebraic variety. Given a line bundle $\mathcal{L}$ over $X$ and an integer $r>1$ one defines the stack $\sqrt[r]{\mathcal{L}/X}$ of $r$-th roots of $\mathcal{L}$. Motivated by Gromov-Witten theoretic questions, in this paper we analyze the structure of moduli stacks of genus $0$ twisted stable maps to $\sqrt[r]{\mathcal{L}/X}$. Our main results are explicit constructions of moduli stacks of genus $0$ twisted stable maps to $\sqrt[r]{\mathcal{L}/X}$ starting from moduli stack of genus $0$ stable maps to $X$. As a consequence, we prove an exact formula ex…
We compute the cohomological invariants with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ of the stack $\mathscr{H}_3$ of hyperelliptic curves of genus $3$ over an algebraically closed field.
The enumerative geometry of r-th roots of line bundles is the subject of Witten's conjecture and occurs in the calculation of Gromov-Witten invariants of orbifolds. It requires the definition of the suitable compact moduli stack and the generalization of the standard techniques from the theory of moduli of stable curves. In math.AG/0603687, we construct a compact stack by describing the notion of stability in the context of twisted curves. In this paper, by working with stable twisted curves, we extend Mumford's formula for the Chern character of the Hodge bundle to the direct image of the uni…
Working over imperfect fields, we give a comprehensive classification of genus-one curves that are regular but not geometrically regular, extending the known case of geometrically reduced curves. The description is given intrinsically, in terms of twisted forms of standard models with respect to infinitesimal group scheme actions, and not via extrinsic equations. The main new idea is to analyze and exploit moduli for fields of representatives in Cohen's Structure Theorem. The results serve for the understanding of genus-one fibrations over higher-dimensional bases.
In this paper we explicit the rational Chow ring of the stack consisting of nodal curves of genus 0 with at most 3 nodes: it is a Q-algebra with 10 generators and 11 relations.
We compute the Picard group of the moduli stack of stable hyperelliptic curves of any genus, exhibiting explicit and geometrically meaningful generators and relations.
This paper is the second in a series of four papers aiming to describe the (almost integral) Chow ring of $\Mbar_3$, the moduli stack of stable curves of genus $3$. In this paper, we introduce the moduli stack $\Htilde_g^r$ of hyperelliptic $A_r$-stable curves and generalize the theory of hyperelliptic stable curves to hyperelliptic $A_r$-stable curves. In particular, we prove that $\Htilde_g^r$ is a smooth algebraic stacks which can be described using cyclic covers of twisted curves of genus $0$ and it embeds in $\Mtilde_g^r$ (the moduli stack of $A_r$-stable curves) as the closure of the mod…
The string corrections of tree-level open-string amplitudes can be described by Selberg integrals satisfying a Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov (KZ) equation. This allows for a recursion of the $α'$-expansion of tree-level string corrections in the number of external states using the Drinfeld associator. While the feasibility of this recursion is well-known, we provide a mathematical description in terms of twisted de Rham theory and intersection numbers of twisted forms. In particular, this leads to purely combinatorial expressions for the matrix representation of the Lie algebra generators appearing i…
We consider the stack of stable curves of genus g with a given dual graph and we give an explicit desingularization of its closure in the moduli stack of stable curves. We study in particular the one-dimensional substack of curves with at least 3g-4 nodes.
We study orbifold Gromov--Witten invariants of the $r$-th root stack $X_{D,r}$ with a pair of mid-ages when $r$ is sufficiently large. We prove that genus $g$ invariants with a pair of mid-ages $k_a/r$ and $1-k_a/r$ are polynomials in $k_a$ and the $k_a^i$-coefficients are polynomials in $r$ with degree bounded by $2g$. Moreover, genus zero invariants with a pair of mid-ages are independent of the choice of mid-ages. As an application, we obtain an identity for relative Gromov--Witten theory which can be viewed as a modified version of the usual loop axiom.
This paper studies etale twists of derived categories of schemes and associative algebras. A general method, based on a new construction called the twisted Brauer space, is given for classifying etale twists, and a complete classification is carried out for genus 0 curves, quadrics, and noncommutative projective spaces. A partial classification is given for curves of higher genus. The techniques build upon my recent work with David Gepner on the Brauer groups of commutative ring spectra.
In this work we study the additive orbifold cohomology of the moduli stack of smooth genus g curves. We show that this problem reduces to investigating the rational cohomology of moduli spaces of cyclic covers of curves where the genus of the covering curve is g. Then we work out the case of genus g=3. Furthermore, we determine the part of the orbifold cohomology of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of genus 3 curves that comes from the Zariski closure of the inertia stack of M_3.
We introduce a procedure for constructing a generalized elliptic curve from a genus-one twisted curve, and we use this procedure to define an explicit, modular isomorphism between two compactifications of moduli stacks of elliptic curves with level structure.
We study twisted derived equivalences for schemes in the setting of spectral algebraic geometry. To this end, we introduce the notion of a twisted equivalence and show that a twisted equivalence for perfect spectral algebraic stacks admitting a quasi-finite presentation supplies an equivalence between the stacks, which compensate for the failure of twisted derived equivalences for non-affine schemes to provide an isomorphism of the schemes. In the case of (not necessarily connective) commutative ring spectra, we also prove a spectral analogue of Rickard's theorem, which shows that a derived eq…
