We consider spacelike graphs $Γ_f$ of simple products $(M\times N, g\times -h)$ where $(M,g)$ and $(N,h)$ are Riemannian manifolds and $f:M\to N$ is a smooth map. Under the condition of the Cheeger constant of $M$ to be zero and some condition on the second fundamental form at infinity, we conclude that if $Γ_f \subset M\times N$ has parallel mean curvature $H$ then $H=0$. This holds trivially if $M$ is closed. If $M$ is the $m$-hyperbolic space then for any constant $c$, we describe a explicit foliation of $H^m\times R$ by hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature $c$.
Local estimates of the maximal curvatures of admissible spacelike hypersurfaces in de Sitter space for k-symmetric curvature functions are obtained. They depend on interior and boundary data.
We prove a gradient estimate for graphical spacelike mean curvature flow with a general Neumann boundary condition in dimension $n=2$. This then implies that the mean curvature flow exists for all time and converges to a translating solution.
We introduce the totally absolute lightcone curvature for a spacelike submanifold with general codimension and investigate global properties of this curvature. One of the consequences is that the Chern-Lashof type inequality holds. Then the notion of lightlike tightness is naturally induced.
We prove that, in Minkowski space, if a spacelike, $(n-1)$-convex hypersurface $M$ with constant $σ_{n-1}$ curvature has bounded principal curvatures, then $M$ is convex. Moreover, if $M$ is not strictly convex, after an $\mathbb{R}^{n,1}$ rigid motion, $M$ splits as a product $M^{n-1}\times\mathbb{R}.$ We also construct nontrivial examples of strictly convex, spacelike hypersurface $M$ with constant $σ_{n-1}$ curvature and bounded principal curvatures.
Spacelike surfaces in Generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes whose mean curvature function satisfies a natural nonlinear inequality are analyzed. Several uniqueness and nonexistence results for such compact spacelike surfaces are proved. In the nonparametric case, new Calabi-Bernstein type problems are solved as a consequence.
Let $R$ be an algebraic curvature tensor on a vector space of signature $(p,q)$ defining a spacelike Jordan Osserman Jacobi operator $\JJ_R$. We show that the eigenvalues of $\JJ_R$ are real and that $\JJ_R$ is diagonalizable if $p<q$.
In this paper, we study the singularities of spacelike constant mean curvature one (CMC 1) surfaces in the de Sitter 3-space. We prove the duality between generalized conelike singular points and 5/2-cuspidal edges on spacelike CMC 1 surfaces. To describe the duality between $A_{k+3}$ singularities and cuspidal $S_k$ singularities, we introduce two invariants, called the $α$-invariant and $σ$-invariant, of spacelike CMC 1 surfaces at their singular points. Moreover, we give a classification of non-degenerate singular points on spacelike CMC 1 surfaces.
There are examples of complete spacelike surfaces in the Lorentzian product $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}_1$ with constant Gaussian curvature $K\leq -1$. In this paper, we show that there exists no complete spacelike surface in $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}_1$ with constant Gaussian curvature $K>-1$.
In this paper, we can obtain curvature estimates for spacelike admissible graphic hypersurfaces in the $(n+1)$-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}_{1}$, and through which the existence of spacelike admissible graphic hypersurfaces, with prescribed $2$-th Weingarten curvature and Dirichlet boundary data, defined over a strictly convex domain in the hyperbolic plane $\mathscr{H}^{n}(1)\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}_{1}$ of center at origin and radius $1$, can be proven.
I classify spacelike self-similar shrinking solutions of the mean curvature flow in pseudo-euclidean space in arbitrary codimension, if the mean curvature vector is not a null vector and the principal normal vector is parallel in the normal bundle. Moreover, I exclude the existence of such self-shrinkers in several cases. The classification is analogous to the existing classifications in the euclidean case of Huisken and Smoczyk.
This is a survey of our work on spacelike graphic submanifolds in pseudo-Riemannian products, namely on Heinz-Chern and Bernstein-Calabi results and on the mean curvature flow, with applications to the homotopy of maps between Riemannian manifolds.
In this paper we analyze the problem of uniqueness for spacelike hypersurfaces with constant higher order mean curvature in generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes. We consider first the case of compact spacelike hypersurfaces, completing some previous results given in [2]. We next extend these results to the complete noncompact case. In that case, our approach is based on the use of a generalized version of the Omori-Yau maximum principle for trace type differential operators, recently given in [3].
In this paper we provide under certain geometric and physical assumptions new uniqueness and non-existence results for complete spacelike hypersurfaces of constant mean curvature in spatially open Generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes. Some of our results are then applied to relevant spacetimes as the steady state spacetime, Einstein-de Sitter spacetime and certain radiation models.
In this work we study spacelike hypersurfaces immersed in spatially open standard static spacetimes with complete spacelike slices. Under appropriate lower bounds on the Ricci curvature of the spacetime in directions tangent to the slices, we prove that every complete CMC hypersurface having either bounded hyperbolic angle or bounded height is maximal. Our conclusions follow from general mean curvature estimates for spacelike hypersurfaces. In case where the spacetime is a Lorentzian product with spatial factor of nonnegative Ricci curvature and sectional curvatures bounded below, we also show…
We prove that a spacelike spherical symmetric constant mean curvature (SSCMC) surface and a general spacelike constant mean curvature (CMC) surface with certain boundary condition at the future null-infinity in Schwarzschild spacetime are asymptotically hyperbolic in the sense of Wang \cite{Wang2001} and Chruściel-Herzlich \cite{ChruscielHerzlich} respectively. Near the future null-infinity ($s=0$), we derive that the boundary data of spacelike CMC surfaces can be expressed as those on $\mathbb{S}^{2}$ up to three order and obtain a compatibility condition for fourth order derivatives near $s=…
We prove long-time existence and convergence results for spacelike solutions to mean curvature flow in the pseudo-Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n,m}$, which are entire or defined on bounded domains and satisfying Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions. As an application, we prove long-time existence and convergence of the $\operatorname{G}_2$-Laplacian flow in cases related to coassociative fibrations.
We give a mathematical foundation for, and numerical demonstration of, the existence of mean curvature 1 surfaces of genus 1 with either two elliptic ends or two hyperbolic ends in de Sitter 3-space. An end of a mean curvature 1 surface is an ``elliptic end'' (resp. a ``hyperbolic end'') if the monodromy matrix at the end is diagonalizable with eigenvalues in the unit circle (resp. in the reals). Although the existence of the surfaces is numerical, the types of ends are mathematically determined.
In this paper we study the strong stability of spacelike hypersurfaces with constant $r$-th mean curvature in Generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes of constant sectional curvature. In particular, we treat the case in which the ambient spacetime is the de Sitter space.
In this work, we consider spacelike surfaces in Minkowski space $\hbox{\bf E}%_{1}^{3}$ that satisfy a linear Weingarten condition of type $κ_{1}=mκ_{2}+n$, where $m$ and $n$ are constant and $κ_{1}$ and $κ_{2}$ denote the principal curvatures at each point of the surface. We study the family of surfaces foliated by a uniparametric family of circles in parallel planes. We prove that the surface must be rotational or the surface is part of the family of Riemann examples of maximal surfaces ($m=-1$, $n=0$). Finally, we consider the class of rotational surfaces for the case $n=0$, obtaining a fir…
We show that for a very general and natural class of curvature functions (for example the curvature quotients $(σ_n/σ_l)^{\frac{1}{n-l}}$) the problem of finding a complete spacelike strictly convex hypersurface in de Sitter space satisfying $f(κ) = σ\in (1,\infty)$ with a prescribed compact future asymptotic boundary $Γ$ at infinity has at least one smooth solution (if l = 1 or l = 2 there is uniqueness). This is the exact analogue of the asymptotic plateau problem in Hyperbolic space and is in fact a precise dual problem. By using this duality we obtain for free the existence of strictly con…
In this paper, we consider the evolution of spacelike graphic hypersurfaces defined over a convex piece of hyperbolic plane $\mathscr{H}^{n}(1)$, of center at origin and radius $1$, in the $(n+1)$-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}_{1}$ along the inverse mean curvature flow with the vanishing Neumann boundary condition, and prove that this flow exists for all the time. Moreover, we can show that, after suitable rescaling, the evolving spacelike graphic hypersurfaces converge smoothly to a piece of hyperbolic plane of center at origin and prescribed radius, which actually cor…
In this paper, we prove the existence of smooth, entire, strictly convex, spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurfaces with prescribed lightlike directions in Minkowski space. This is equivalent to prove the existence of smooth, entire, strictly convex, spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurfaces with prescribed Gauss map image. We also show that there doesn't exist any entire, convex, strictly spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurfaces. Moreover, we generalize the result in \cite{RWX} and construct strictly convex, spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurface with bounde…
The first author studied spacelike constant mean curvature one (CMC-1) surfaces in de Sitter 3-space when the surfaces have no singularities except within some compact subset and are of finite total curvature on the complement of this compact subset. However, there are many CMC-1 surfaces whose singular sets are not compact. In fact, such examples have already appeared in the construction of trinoids given by Lee and the last author via hypergeometric functions. In this paper, we improve the Osserman-type inequality given by the first author. Moreover, we shall develop a fundamental framework …
In this paper, we consider the evolution of spacelike graphic curves defined over a piece of hyperbola $\mathscr{H}^{1}(1)$, of center at origin and radius $1$, in the $2$ dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski plane $\mathbb{R}^{2}_{1}$ along an anisotropic inverse mean curvature flow with the vanishing Neumann boundary condition, and prove that this flow exists for all the time. Moreover, we can show that, after suitable rescaling, the evolving spacelike graphic curves converge smoothly to a piece of hyperbola of center at origin and prescribed radius, which actually corresponds to a constant functio…
We prove existence and stability of smooth entire strictly convex spacelike hypersurfaces of prescribed Gauss curvature in Minkowski space. The proof is based on barrier constructions and local a priori estimates.
We prove existence and uniqueness of entire spacelike hypersurfaces in the Minkowski space with prescribed negative scalar curvature, and with given values at infinity which stay at a bounded distance of a lightcone.
In this paper, we consider the evolution of spacelike graphic hypersurfaces defined over a convex piece of hyperbolic plane $\mathscr{H}^{n}(1)$, of center at origin and radius $1$, in the $(n+1)$-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}_{1}$ along an anisotropic inverse mean curvature flow with the vanishing Neumann boundary condition, and prove that this flow exists for all the time. Moreover, we can show that, after suitable rescaling, the evolving spacelike graphic hypersurfaces converge smoothly to a piece of hyperbolic plane of center at origin and prescribed radius, which a…
In this paper, we study the intrinsic mean curvature flow on certain closed spacelike manifolds, and prove the existence of hyperbolic structures on them.
For a compact spacelike constant mean curvature surface with nonempty boundary in the three-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space, we introduce a rotation index of the lines of curvature at the boundary umbilic point, which was developed by Choe \cite{Choe}. Using the concept of the rotation index at the interior and boundary umbilic points and applying the Poincaré-Hopf index formula, we prove that a compact immersed spacelike disk type capillary surface with less than $4$ vertices in a domain of $\Bbb L^3$ bounded by (spacelike or timelike) totally umbilic surfaces is part of a (spacelike) pla…
In this paper we solve the Plateau problem for spacelike surfaces with constant mean curvature in Lorentz-Minkowski three-space $ł^3$ and spanning two circular (axially symmetric) contours in parallel planes. We prove that rotational symmetric surfaces are the only compact spacelike surfaces in $ł^3$ of constant mean curvature bounded by two concentric circles in parallel planes. As conclusion, we characterize spacelike surfaces of revolution with constant mean curvature as the only that either i) are the solutions of the exterior Dirichlet problem for constant boundary data or ii) have an iso…
We are concerned with spacelike convex hypersurfaces of positive constant (K-hypersurfaces) or prescribed Gauss curvature in Minkowski space. Our main purpose is to study entire solutions as well as the Dirichlet problem in bounded domains of the related Monge-Ampere equation.
We prove long-time existence for mean curvature flow of a smooth $n$-dimensional spacelike submanifold of an $n+m$ dimensional manifold whose metric satisfies the timelike curvature condition.
We obtain a gradient estimate for the Gauss maps from complete spacelike constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in Minkowski space into the hyperbolic space. As applications, we prove a Bernstein theorem which says that if the image of the Gauss map is bounded from one side, then the spacelike constant mean curvature hypersurface must be linear. This result extends the previous theorems obtained by B. Palmer and Y.L. Xin where they assume that the image of the Gauss map is bounded. We also proved a Bernstein theorem for spacelike complete surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector in four-dim…
In this paper we prove Hessian and Laplacian comparison theorems for the Lorentzian distance function in a spacetime with sectional (or Ricci) curvature bounded by a certain function by means of a comparison criterion for Riccati equations. Using these results, under suitable conditions, we are able to obtain some estimates on the higher order mean curvatures of spacelike hypersurfaces satisfying a Omori-Yau maximum principle for certain elliptic operators.
In this paper, we study the existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behavior of rotationally symmetric translating solitons of the mean curvature flow in Minkowski space. We also study the asymptotic behavior and the strict convexity of general solitons of such flows.
We generalize the Fenchel theorem for strong spacelike closed curves of index $1$ in the 3-dimensional Minkowski space, showing that the total curvature must be less than or equal to $2π$. Here strong spacelike means that the tangent vector and the curvature vector span a spacelike 2-plane at each point of the curve $γ$ under consideration. The assumption of index 1 is equivalent to saying that $γ$ winds around some timelike axis with winding number 1. We prove this reversed Fenchel-type inequality by constructing a ruled spacelike surface with the given curve as boundary and applying the Gaus…
In this paper we provide several uniqueness and non-existence results for complete parabolic constant mean curvature spacelike hypersurfaces in Lorentzian warped products under appropriate geometric assumptions. As a consequence of this parametric study, we obtain very general uniqueness and non-existence results for a large family of uniformly elliptic EDP's, so solving the Calabi-Bernstein problem in a wide family of spacetimes.
Similar to the definition of Dupin hypersurface in Riemannian space forms, we define the spacelike Dupin hypersurface in Lorentzian space forms. As conformal invariant objects, spacelike Dupin hypersurfaces are studied in this paper using the framework of conformal geometry. Further we classify the spacelike Dupin hypersurfaces with constant Möbius curvatures, which are the partition ratio of the principal curvatures of the spacelike Dupin hypersurface.
In this paper, we give the characterizations of spacelike B2-slant helix by means of curvatures of the spacelike curve in Minkowski 4-space. Furthermore, we give the integral characterization of the spacelike B2-slant helix.
Several uniqueness results for non-compact complete stationary spacelike surfaces in an $n(\geq 3)$-dimensional Generalized Robertson Walker spacetime are obtained. In order to do that, we assume a natural inequality involving the Gauss curvature of the surface, the restrictions of the warping function and the sectional curvature of the fiber to the surface. This inequality gives the parabolicity of the surface. Using this property, a distinguished non-negative superharmonic function on the surface is shown to be constant, which implies that the stationary spacelike surface must be totally geo…
In this paper, we investigate the relations between the pitch, the angle of pitch and drall of parallel ruled surface of a closed spacelike curve with a spacelike binormal in dual Lorentzian space.
We show that a given $x:M^n\to \bar{M}^{n+1}=I\times_ϕF^{n}$ closed spacelike hypersurface with constant mean curvature $H$ and warping function $ϕ$ satisfying ϕ''\geq \ma\{Hϕ'',0\}$ is either minimal or a spacelike slice $\{t_{o}\}\times F$ for some $t_{o}\in I$.
Spacelike surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski space L^3 can be endowed with two different Riemannian metrics, the metric inherited from L^3 and the one induced by the Euclidean metric of R^3. It is well known that the only surfaces with zero mean curvature with respect to both metrics are open pieces of the helicoid and of spacelike planes. We consider the general case of spacelike surfaces with the same mean curvature with respect to both metrics. One of our main results states that those surfaces have non-positive Gaussian curvature in R^3. As an application of this result, jointly with a gene…
In this paper we study the problem of uniqueness for spacelike hypersurfaces with constant higher order mean curvature in generalized Robertson-Walker (GRW) spacetimes. In particular, we consider the following question: Under what conditions must a compact spacelike hypersurface with constant higher order mean curvature in a spatially closed GRW spacetime be a spacelike slice? We prove that this happens, esentially, under the so called convergence condition. Our approach is based on the use of the Newton transformations (and their associated differential operators) and the Minkowski formulae f…
In this paper we present a rigidity theorem for locally isometric hypersurfaces with a curvature restriction in de Sitter space. This is an analogue to the case for Riemannian space forms given by Guan and Shen in [5].
For entire spacelike stationary 2-dimensional graphs in Minkowski spaces, we establish Bernstein type theorems under specific boundedness assumptions either on the W-function or on the total (Gaussian) curvature. These conclusions imply the classical Bernstein theorem for minimal surfaces in 3-dimensional Euclidean space and Calabi's theorem for spacelike maximal surfaces in 3-dimensional Minkowski space.
In this paper, we define a rectifying spacelike curve in the Minkowski space-time $E_1^4$ as a curve whose position vector always lies in orthogonal complement $N^{\bot}$ of its principal normal vector field $N$. In particular, we study the rectifying spacelike curves in $E_1^4$ and characterize such curves in terms of their curvature functions.
We classify (spacelike or timelike) surfaces of revolution with zero $f$-mean curvature in $\Bbb G^2\times\Bbb R_1,$ the Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space $\Bbb R^3_1$ endowed with the Gaussian-Euclidean density $e^{-f(x,y,z)}=\frac 1{2π}e^{-\frac{x^2+y^2}2}.$ It is proved that an $f$-maximal surface of revolution is either a horizontal plane or a spacelike $f$-Catenoid. For the timelike case, a timelike $f$-minimal surface is either a vertical plane containing $z$-axis, the cylinder $x^2+y^2=1,$ or a timelike $f$-Catenoid. Spacelike and timelike $f$-Catenoids are new examples of $f$-minimal surfaces …
