We give a presentation for the (integral) torus-equivariant Chow ring of the quot scheme, a smooth compactification of the space of rational curves of degree d in the Grassmannian. For this presentation, we refine Evain's extension of the method of Goresky, Kottwitz, and MacPherson to express the torus-equivariant Chow ring in terms of the torus-fixed points and explicit relations coming from the geometry of families of torus-invariant curves. As part of this calculation, we give a complete description of the torus-invariant curves on the quot scheme and show that each family is a product of projective spaces.
We study $T$-linear schemes, a class of objects that includes spherical and Schubert varieties. We provide a localization theorem for the equivariant Chow cohomology of these schemes that does not depend on resolution of singularities. Furthermore, we give an explicit presentation of the equivariant Chow cohomology of possibly singular complete spherical varieties admitting a smooth equivariant envelope (e.g. group embeddings).
We show that the equivariant Chow cohomology ring of a toric variety is naturally isomorphic to the ring of integral piecewise polynomial functions on the associated fan. This gives a large class of singular spaces for which localization holds in equivariant Chow cohomology with integer coefficients. We also compute the equivariant Chow cohomology of toric prevarieties and general complex hypertoric varieties in terms of piecewise polynomial functions.
We give an example of an algebraic torus $T$ such that the group $\operatorname{CH}^2(BT)_{\operatorname{tors}}$ is non-trivial. This answers a question of Blinstein and Merkurjev.
We consider torus actions on Mori dream spaces and ask whether the associated Chow quotient is again a Mori dream space and, if so, what does its Cox ring look like. We provide general tools for the study of these problems and give solutions for k*-actions on smooth quadrics.
For a smooth quasi-projective scheme $X$ over a field $k$ with an action of a reductive group, we establish a spectral sequence connecting the equivariant and the ordinary higher Chow groups of $X$. For $X$ smooth and projective, we show that this spectral sequence degenerates, leading to an explicit relation between the equivariant and the ordinary higher Chow groups. We obtain several applications to algebraic $K$-theory. We show that for a reductive group $G$ acting on a smooth projective scheme $X$, the forgetful map $K^G_i(X) \to K_i(X)$ induces an isomorphism $K^G_i(X)/{I_G K^G_i(X)} \co…
We give explicit equations for the Chow and Hilbert quotients of a projective scheme X by the action of an algebraic torus T in an auxiliary toric variety. As a consequence we provide GIT descriptions of these canonical quotients, and obtain other GIT quotients of X by variation of GIT quotient. We apply these results to find equations for the moduli space \bar{M}_{0,n} of stable genus zero n-pointed curves as a subvariety of a smooth toric variety defined via tropical methods.
We prove a formula for Chow groups of $Quot$-schemes which resolve degeneracy loci of a map between vector bundles, under expected dimension conditions. This result provides a unified way to understand known formulae for various geometric situations such as blowups, Cayley's trick, projectivizations, Grassmannian bundles, flops from Springer type resolutions, as well as provide new phenomena such as formulae for Grassmannain type flips/flops and virtual flips. We also give applications to blowups of determinantal ideals, moduli spaces of linear series on curves, and Hilbert schemes of points o…
For a toric variety X_P determined by a rational polyhedral fan P in a lattice N, Payne shows that the equivariant Chow cohomology of X_P is the Sym(N)--algebra C^0(P) of integral piecewise polynomial functions on P. We use the Cartan-Eilenberg spectral sequence to analyze the associated reflexive sheaf on Proj(N), showing that the Chern classes depend on subtle geometry of P and giving criteria for the splitting of the sheaf as a sum of line bundles. For certain fans associated to the reflection arrangement A_n, we describe a connection between C^0(P) and logarithmic vector fields tangent to …
In this short note, we prove a comparision theorem between Levine-Serpé's equivariant higher Chow groups of an algebraic variety equipped with an action of a finite group and ordinary higher Chow groups of its fixed points. As a consequence, we show that the equivariant motivic spectral sequence degenerates rationally. This yields a Riemann-Roch Theorem for equivariant algebraic $K$-theory.
We compute rational equivariant Chow rings with respect to a torus of quiver moduli spaces. We derive a presentation in terms of generators and relations, use torus localization to identify it as a subring of the Chow ring of the fixed point locus, and we compare the two descriptions.
Let X be a smooth projective toric surface, and H^d(X) the Hilbert scheme parametrising the length d zero-dimensional subschemes of X. We compute the rational Chow ring A^*(H^d(X))\_Q. More precisely, if T is the two-dimensional torus contained in X, we compute the rational equivariant Chow ring A\_T^*(H^d(X))\_Q and the usual Chow ring is an explicit quotient of the equivariant Chow ring. The case of some quasi-projective toric surfaces such as the affine plane are described by our method too.
We describe the equivariant Chow ring of the wonderful compactification $X$ of a symmetric space of minimal rank, via restriction to the associated toric variety $Y$. Also, we show that the restrictions to $Y$ of the tangent bundle $T_X$ and its logarithmic analogue $S_X$ decompose into a direct sum of line bundles. This yields closed formulae for the equivariant Chern classes of $T_X$ and $S_X$, and, in turn, for the Chern classes of reductive groups considered by Kiritchenko.
The aim of this note is to announce some results on the GIT problem for the Hilbert and Chow scheme of curves of degree d and genus g in P^{d-g}, whose full details will appear in a subsequent paper. In particular, we extend the previous results of L. Caporaso up to d>4(2g-2) and we observe that this is sharp. In the range 2(2g-2)<d<7/2(2g-2), we get a complete new description of the GIT quotient. As a corollary, we get a new compactification of the universal Jacobian over the moduli space of pseudo-stable curves.
The purpose of this paper is to prove an equivariant Riemann-Roch theorem for schemes or algebraic spaces with an action of a linear algebraic group $G$. For a $G$-space $X$, this theorem gives an isomorphism between a completion of the equivariant Grothendieck group and a completion of equivariant equivariant Chow groups. The key to proving this isomorphism is a geometric description of completions of the equivariant Grothendieck group. Besides Riemann-Roch, this result has some purely $K$-theoretic applications. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Köck (in the case of regular schemes) an…
Let $G$ be the product $GL_r(C) \times (C^\times)^n$. We show that the $G$-equivariant Chow class of a $G$ orbit closure in the space of $r$-by-$n$ matrices is determined by a matroid. To do this, we split the natural surjective map from the $G$ equvariant Chow ring of the space of matrices to the torus equivariant Chow ring of the Grassmannian. The splitting takes the class of a Schubert variety to the corresponding factorial Schur polynomial, and also has the property that the class of a subvariety of the Grassmannian is mapped to the class of the closure of those matrices whose row span is …
In this paper we investigate Murre's conjecture on the Chow--Künneth decomposition for two classes of examples. We look at the universal families of smooth curves over spaces which dominate the moduli space $\cM_g$, in genus at most 8 and show existence of a Chow--Künneth decomposition. The second class of examples include the representation varieties of a finitely generated group with one relation. This is done in the setting of equivariant cohomology and equivariant Chow groups to get equivariant Chow--Künneth decompositions.
We compute the integral Chow ring of the quotient stack $[(\mathbb{P}^1)^n/PGL_2]$, which contains $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$ as a dense open, and determine a natural $\mathbb{Z}$-basis for the Chow ring in terms of certain ordered incidence strata. We further show that all $\mathbb{Z}$-linear relations between the classes of ordered incidence strata arise from an analogue of the WDVV relations in $A^\bullet(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n})$. Next we compute the classes of unordered incidence strata in the integral Chow ring of the quotient stack $[{\rm Sym}^n\mathbb{P}^1/PGL_2]$ and classify all $\math…
We find a new presentation of the stack of hyperelliptic curves of odd genus as a quotient stack and we use it to compute its integral Chow ring by means of equivariant intersection theory.
In this paper we develop an equivariant intersection theory for actions of algebraic groups on algebraic schemes. The theory is based on our construction of equivariant Chow groups. They are algebraic analogues of equivariant cohomology groups which satsify the formal properties of ordinary Chow groups. In addition, they enjoy many of the properties of equivariant cohomology. The principal results are: (1) We prove the existence of canonical intersection products on the Chow groups of geometric quotients of smooth varieties- even when the stabilizers of geometric points are non-reduced. (2) We…
For $X$ a smooth scheme acted on by a linear algebraic group $G$ and $p$ a prime, the equivariant Chow ring $CH^*_G(X)\otimes \mathbb{F}_p$ is an unstable algebra over the Steenrod algebra. We compute Lannes's $T$-functor applied to $CH^*_G(X)\otimes \mathbb{F}_p$. As an application, we compute the localization of $CH^*_G(X)\otimes \mathbb{F}_p$ away from $n$-nilpotent modules over the Steenrod algebra, affirming a conjecture of Totaro as a special case. The case when $X$ is a point and $n = 1$ generalizes and recovers an algebro-geometric version of Quillen's stratification theorem proved by …
This paper studies the canonical Chow quotient of a smooth projective variety by a reductive algebraic group. The main purpose is to give some topological interpretations and characterization of Chow quotient which have the advantage to be more intuitive and geometric. This is to be done over the field of complex numbers and in the languages that are familiar to topologists and differential geometers. More precisely, the main observation of this paper is that, over the field of complex numbers, the Chow quotient admits symplectic and other topological interpretations, namely, symplectically, t…
We compute the integral Chow ring of the stack of smooth, non-hyperelliptic curves of genus three. We obtain this result by computing the integral Chow ring of the stack of smooth plane quartics, by means of equivariant intersection theory.
We define the Chow ring of the classifying space of a linear algebraic group. In all the examples where we can compute it, such as the symmetric groups and the orthogonal groups, it is isomorphic to a natural quotient of the complex cobordism ring of the classifying space, a topological invariant. We apply this to get torsion information on the Chow groups of varieties defined as quotients by finite groups. This generalizes Atiyah and Hirzebruch's use of such varieties to give counterexamples to the Hodge conjecture with integer coefficients.
Let H(d) be the (open) Hilbert scheme of rational normal curves of degree d in P^d. A presentation of the integral Chow ring of H(d) is given via equivariant Chow ring computations. Included also in the paper are algebraic computations of the integral equivariant Chow rings of the algebraic groups O(n), SO(2k+1). The results for S0(3)=PGL(2) are needed for the Hilbert scheme calculation.
We give a presentation for the stack of rational curves with at most 1 node as the quotient by GL(3) of an open set in a 6-dimensional irreducible representation. We then use equivariant intersection theory to calculate the integral Chow ring of this stack.
In the present paper we introduce and study the notion of an equivariant pretheory: basic examples include equivariant Chow groups, equivariant K-theory and equivariant algebraic cobordism. To extend this set of examples we define an equivariant (co)homology theory with coefficients in a Rost cycle module and provide a version of Merkurjev's (equivariant K-theory) spectral sequence for such a theory. As an application we generalize the theorem of Karpenko-Merkurjev on G-torsors and rational cycles; to every G-torsor E and a G-equivariant pretheory we associate a graded ring which serves as an …
We give a proof of Pixton's generalized Faber-Zagier relations in the tautological Chow ring of $\overline M_{g,n}$. The strategy is very similar to the work of Pandharipande-Pixton-Zvonkine, who have given a proof of the same result in cohomology. The main tool is the Givental-Teleman classification of semisimple cohomological field theories, which, while in general only known in cohomology, via virtual localization can be shown to be also valid in Chow for the equivariant Gromov-Witten theory of the projective line. We obtain the relations just from this theory.
In this paper we study actions of reductive groups on affine spaces. We prove that there is a fan structure on the space of characters of the group, which parameterizes the possible invariant quotients. In the second half of the paper we study various geometrical properties of the quotients: we compute their Chow ring and the cohomology ring (in case we work over the complex numbers), both with rational coefficients. Actually, the cycle map turns out to be an isomorphism. Further, we construct families of such quotients over reduced base schemes, and compute again the Chow and the cohomology r…
We apply the machinery developed by the first-named author to the K-theory of coherent G-sheaves on a finite type G-scheme X over a field, where G is a finite group. This leads to a definition of G-equivariant higher Chow groups (different from the Chow groups of classifying spaces constructed by Totaro and generalized to arbitrary X by Edidin-Graham) and an Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence from the G-equivariant higher Chow groups to the higher K-theory of coherent G-sheaves on X. This spectral sequence generalizes the spectral sequence from motivic cohomology to K-theory constructed by Bl…
Let $f: X \rightarrow A$ be an abelian cover from a complex algebraic variety with quotient singularities to an abelian variety. We show that $f^*$ induces an isomorphism between the rational cohomology rings $H^\bullet(A, \mathbb{Q})$ and $H^\bullet(X, \mathbb{Q})$ if and only if $f^*$ induces an isomorphism between the Chow rings with rational coefficients $\mathrm{CH}^\bullet(A)_{\mathbb{Q}}$ and $\mathrm{CH}^\bullet(X)_{\mathbb{Q}}$.
We prove some fundamental results like localization, excision, Nisnevich descent and the Mayer-Vietoris property for equivariant regular blow-up for the equivariant K-theory of schemes with an affine group scheme action. We also show that the equivariant K-theory with finite coefficients is invariant under equivariant vector bundle morphisms. We show that the equivariant homotopy K-theory is invariant under equivariant vector bundle morphisms and satisfies all the above properties, including nil-invariance.
We begin a study of the intersection theory of the moduli spaces of degree two stable maps from two-pointed rational curves to arbitrary-dimensional projective space. First we compute the Betti numbers of these spaces using Serre polynomial and equivariant Serre polynomial methods developed by E. Getzler and R. Pandharipande. Then, via the excision sequence, we compute an additive basis for their Chow rings in terms of Chow rings of nonlinear Grassmannians, which have been described by Pandharipande. The ring structure of one of these Chow rings is addressed in a sequel to this paper.
We compare the cohomology ring of the flag variety $FL_n$ and the Chow cohomology ring of the Gelfand-Zetlin toric variety $X_{GZ}$. We show that $H^*(FL_n, \mathbb{Q})$ is the Gorenstein quotient of the subalgebra $L$ of $A^*(X_{GZ}, \mathbb{Q})$ generated by degree $1$ elements. We compute these algebras for $n=3$ to see that, in general, the subalgebra $L$ does not have Poincare duality.
For a scheme S with a good action of a finite abelian group G having enough roots of unity we show that the quotient map on the G-equivariant Grothendieck ring of varieties over S is well defined with image in the Grothendieck ring of varieties over S/G in the tame case, and in the modified Grothendieck ring in the wild case. To prove this we use a result on the class of the quotient of a vector space by a quasi-linear action in the Grothendieck ring of varieties due to Esnault and Viehweg, which we also generalize to the case of wild actions. As an application we deduce that the quotient of t…
Let X be a smooth projective variety with the action of the n dimensional torus. The article describes the moduli space of torus equivariant morphisms from stable toric varieties into X as the inverse limit of the GIT quotients of X and their flips when these spaces are enhanced with a naturally associated Deligne-Mumford stack structure. This description is used for constructing a class in the Chow group of the moduli space of dimension dim(X)-n which is invariant to equivariant deformations of X.
We give a presentation for the Chow ring of the moduli space of degree two stable maps from two-pointed rational curves to P^1. Also, integrals of of all degree four monomials in the hyperplane pullbacks and boundary divisors of this ring are computed using equivariant intersection theory. Finally, the presentation is used to give a new computation of the (previously known) values of the genus zero, degree two, two-pointed gravitational correlators of P^1. This article is a sequel to math.AG/0501322, although the only information truly needed from that article is the Poincare polynomial of the…
Fix a scheme $X$ over a field of characteristic zero that is equipped with an action of a reductive algebraic group $G$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a $G$-equivariant coherent sheaf on $X$ or a bounded-above complex of $G$-equivariant coherent sheaves on $X$ to descend to a good quotient $X//G$. This gives a description of the coherent derived category of $X//G$ as an admissible subcategory of the equivariant derived category of $X$.
Let X be an affine T-variety. We study two different quotients for the action of T on X: the toric Chow quotient X/_CT and the toric Hilbert scheme H. We introduce a notion of the main component H_0 of H which parameterizes general T-orbit closures in X and their flat limits. The main component U_0 of the universal family U over H is a preimage of H_0. We define an analogue of a universal family W_X over the main component of the X/_CT. We show that the toric Chow morphism restricted on the main components lifts to a birational projective morphism from U_0 to W_X. The variety W_X also provides…
We investigate GIT quotients of polarized curves. More specifically, we study the GIT problem for the Hilbert and Chow schemes of curves of degree d and genus g in a projective space of dimension d-g, as the ratio v:=d/(2g-2) decreases. We prove that the first three values of v at which the GIT quotients change are given by v=4, 3.5, 2. We show that, for v>4, L. Caporaso's results hold true for both Hilbert and Chow semistability. If 3.5<v<4, the Hilbert semistable locus coincides with the Chow semistable locus and it maps to the moduli stack of weakly-pseudo-stable curves. If 2<v<3.5, the Hil…
We provide a notion of algebraic rational cell with applications to intersection theory on singular varieties with torus action. Based on this notion, we study the algebraic analogue of $\mathbb{Q}$-filtrable varieties: algebraic varieties where a torus acts with isolated fixed points, such that the associated Bialynicki-Birula decomposition consists of algebraic rational cells. We show that the rational equivariant Chow group of any $\mathbb{Q}$-filtrable variety is freely generated by the cell closures. We apply this result to group embeddings, and more generally to spherical varieties. This…
We show that the GIT quotients of suitable loci in the Hilbert and Chow schemes of 4-canonically embedded curves of genus $g\ge 3$ are the moduli space $\bar{M}_g^{\text{ps}}$ of pseudo-stable curves constructed by Schubert in \cite{Schubert} using Chow varieties and 3-canonical models. The only new ingredient needed in the Hilbert scheme variant is a more careful analysis of the stability with respect to a certain 1-ps $λ$ of the $m^{\text{th}}$ Hilbert points of curves $X$ with elliptic tails. We compute the exact weight with which $λ$ acts, and not just the leading term in $m$ of this weigh…
In the last decades there have been introduced different concepts of stability for projective varieties. In this paper we give a natural and intrinsic criterion of the Chow, and Hilbert, stability for complex irreducible smooth projective curves $C\subset \mathbb P ^n$. Namely, if the restriction $T\mathbb P_{|C} ^n$ of the tangent bundle of $\mathbb P ^n$ to $C$ is stable then $C\subset \mathbb P ^n$ is Chow stable, and hence Hilbert stable. We apply this criterion to describe a smooth open set of the irreducible component $Hilb^{P(t),s}_{Ch}$ of the Hilbert scheme of $\mathbb{P} ^n$ containi…
In this paper we determine the structure of the Chow ring of the Delaunay-Voronoi compactification $\tilde{\cal A}_3$ of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian threefolds. This compactification was introduced by Namikawa and studied by Tsushima. We use equivariant classes on level coverings of $\tilde{\cal A}_3$. We also compare this ring with the Chow ring of the moduli space of stable genus 3 curves as determined by Faber.
Let $S$ be the affine plane regarded as a toric variety with an action of the 2-dimensional torus $T$. We study the equivariant Chow ring $A_{K}^*(Hilb^n(S))$ of the punctual Hilbert scheme $Hilb^n(S)$ with equivariant coefficients inverted. We compute base change formulas in $A_{K}^*(Hilb^n(S))$ between the natural bases introduced by Nakajima, Ellingsrud and Strømme, and the classical basis associated with the fixed points. We compute the equivariant commutation relations between creation/annihilation operators. We express the class of the small diagonal in $Hilb^n(S)$ in terms of the equiva…
Let $X$ be a hyperkähler variety with an anti-symplectic involution $ι$. According to Beauville's conjectural "splitting property", the Chow groups of $X$ should split in a finite number of pieces such that the Chow ring has a bigrading. The Bloch-Beilinson conjectures predict how $ι$ should act on certain of these pieces of the Chow groups. We verify part of this conjecture for a $19$-dimensional family of hyperkähler sixfolds that are "double EPW cubes" (in the sense of Iliev-Kapustka-Kapustka-Ranestad). This has interesting consequences for the Chow ring of the quotient $X/ι$, which is an "…
In this expository article we give a categorical definition of the integral cohomology ring of a stack. We show that for quotient stacks the categorical cohomology may be identified with equivariant cohomology. Via this identification we show that for Deligne-Mumford quotient stacks this cohomology is rationally isomorphic to the rational cohomology of the coarse moduli space. The theory is presented with a focus on the stacks of smooth and stable curves.
Given a finite group G, we develop a theory of G-equivariant noncommutative motives. This theory provides a well-adapted framework for the study of G-schemes, Picard groups of schemes, G-algebras, 2-cocycles, equivariant algebraic K-theory, orbifold cohomology theory, etc. Among other results, we relate our theory with its commutative counterpart as well as with Panin's motivic theory. As a first application, we extend Panin's computations, concerning twisted projective homogeneous varieties, to a large class of invariants. As a second application, we prove that whenever the category of perfec…
