We show that the GIT quotients of suitable loci in the Hilbert and Chow schemes of 4-canonically embedded curves of genus $g\ge 3$ are the moduli space $\bar{M}_g^{\text{ps}}$ of pseudo-stable curves constructed by Schubert in \cite{Schubert} using Chow varieties and 3-canonical models. The only new ingredient needed in the Hilbert scheme variant is a more careful analysis of the stability with respect to a certain 1-ps $λ$ of the $m^{\text{th}}$ Hilbert points of curves $X$ with elliptic tails. We compute the exact weight with which $λ$ acts, and not just the leading term in $m$ of this weight. A similar analysis of stability of curves with rational cuspidal tails allows us to determine the stable and semistable 4-canonical Chow loci. Although here the geometry of the quotient is more complicated because there are strictly semi-stable orbits, we are able to again identify it as $\bar{M}_g^{\text{ps}}$. Our computations yield, as byproducts, examples of both $m$-Hilbert unstable and $m$-Hilbert stable $X$ that are Chow strictly semi-stable.
We introduce the problem of GIT stability for syzygy points of canonical curves with a view toward a GIT construction of the canonical model of the moduli space of stable curves. As the first step in this direction, we prove semi-stability of the first syzygy point for a general canonical curve of odd genus.
We establish GIT semistability of the 2nd Hilbert point of every Gieseker-Petri general canonical curve by a simple geometric argument. As a consequence, we obtain an upper bound on slopes of general families of Gorenstein curves. We also explore the question of what replaces hyperelliptic curves in the GIT quotients of the Hilbert scheme of canonical curves.
We prove that a generic canonically or bicanonically embedded smooth curve has semistable m-th Hilbert points for all m. We also prove that a generic bicanonically embedded smooth curve has stable m-th Hilbert points for all m \geq 3. In the canonical case, this is accomplished by proving finite Hilbert semistability of special singular curves with G_m-action, namely the canonically embedded balanced ribbon and the canonically embedded balanced double A_{2k+1}-curve. In the bicanonical case, we prove finite Hilbert stability of special hyperelliptic curves, namely Wiman curves. Finally, we giv…
This paper is a sequel to arXiv:1109.4986, where we proved that a general smooth curve of odd genus, canonically or bicanonically embedded, has semistable finite Hilbert points. Here, we prove that a generic canonically embedded curve of even genus has semistable finite Hilbert points. More precisely, we prove that a generic canonically embedded trigonal curve of even genus has semistable finite Hilbert points. Furthermore, we show that the analogous result fails for bielliptic curves. Namely, the Hilbert points of bielliptic curves are asymptotically semistable but become non-semistable below…
We analyze GIT stability of nets of quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^4$ up to projective equivalence. Since a general net of quadrics defines a canonically embedded smooth curve of genus five, the resulting GIT quotient gives a birational model of the moduli space of genus 5 curves. We study the geometry of the associated contraction and prove that the constructed GIT quotient is the final step of the log minimal model program for the moduli space of genus 5 curves.
We study the canonical stability of a smooth projective 3-fold $V$ of general type. We prove that (1) $|5K_V|$ gives a birational map onto its image provided the geometric genus $p_g\geq 4$; (2) $|6K_V|$ gives a birational map provided $p_g=3$. Known examples show that both are optimal. This fact can be viewed as parallel to surface case, though people know very little on 3-folds of general type with $p_g\leq 1$.
Let f :S\to B be a non locally trivial fibred surface. We prove a lower bound for the slope of f depending increasingly from the relative irregularity of f and the Clifford index of the general fibres.
This paper aims to improve a theorem of Janos Kollar. For a given Complex projective threefold X of general type, suppose the plurigenus p_k(X)\ge 2, Kollar proved that the (11k+5)-canonical map is birational. Here we show that either the (7k+3)-canonical map or the (7k+5)-canonical map is birational and that the m-canonical map is stably birational for m\ge 13k+6. If P_k(X)\ge 3, then the m-canonical map is stably birational for m\ge 10k+8. In particular, the 12-canonical map is birational when p_g(X)\ge 2 and the 11-canonical map is birational when p_g(X)\ge 3.
We survey some recent developments in the study of canonical Kähler metrics on algebraic varieties and their relation with stability in algebraic geometry.
We study the canonical stability index of nonsingular projective varieties of general type with either large canonical volume or large geometric genus. As applications of a general extension theorem established in the first part, we prove some optimal results in dimensions 4 and 5, which are parallel to some well-known results on surfaces and 3-folds.
Let X be a projective 3-fold with at most Q-factorial terminal singularities on which K_X is nef and big. Suppose the canonical index r(X)>1. For any positive integer m, it is interesting to consider the base point freeness and birationality of the divisor mK_X. For example, we know the following results: (1) the system |5rK_X| is base point free (Ein-Lazarsfeld-Lee); (2) |mK_X| gives a birational map for all m>4r+2 (M. Hanamura). This article aims to present a better result in direction (2). As far as our method can tell here, |mK_X| gives a birational map for all m>2r+5. (Q-divisor method + …
In this article we consider log canonical pairs which are log-smooth. If the corresponding canonical bundle is pseudo-effective, then we show that any quotient of the orbifold cotangent bundle of the pair has a pseudo-effective determinant. One of the new ingredients in the proof is a generalization of the Bogomolov-McQuillan algebraicity criterion in the context of holomorphic foliations whose minimal slope with respect to a movable class is positive.
Let $S$ be a complete intersection of a smooth quadric 3-fold $Q$ and a hypersurface of degree $d$ in ${\mathbb P}^4$. In this paper we analyze GIT stability of $S$ with respect to the natural $G=SO(5, {\mathbb C})$-action. We prove that if $d\ge 4$ and $S$ has at worst semi-log canonical singularities then $S$ is $G$-stable. Also, we prove that if $d\ge 3$ and $S$ has at worst semi-log canonical singularities then $S$ is $G$-semistable.
We introduce $\mathfrak{f}$-stability, a modification of fibration stability of Dervan-Sektnan [12], and show that $\mathfrak{f}$-semistable fibrations have only semi log canonical singularities. Moreover, $\mathfrak{f}$-stability puts restrictions on semi log canonical centers on Fano fibrations.
Let $\text{Bl}_{\mathbb{P}^1} \mathbb{P}^n$ be a Kähler manifold obtained by blowing up a complex projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$ along a line $\mathbb{P}^1$. We prove that $\text{Bl}_{\mathbb{P}^1} \mathbb{P}^n$ does not admit constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics in any rational Kähler class, but admits extremal metrics, with an explicit formula in action-angle coordinates, in Kähler classes that are close to the pullback of the Fubini--Study class.
Assume that a projective variety together with a polarization is uniformly K-stable. If the polarization is canonical or anti-canonical, then the projective variety is uniformly K-stable with respects to any polarization sufficiently close to the original polarization.
An asymptotic formula for the Tian-Paul CM-line of a flat family blown-up at a flat closed sub-scheme is given. As an application we prove that the blow-up of a polarized manifold along a (relatively) Chow-unstable submanifold admits no (extremal) constant scalar curvature Kahler metrics in classes making the exceptional divisors sufficiently small. Moreover a geometric characterization of relatively Chow-unstable configuration of points in the projective space is given. From this we get new examples of classes admitting no extremal Kahler metric also in the case of the projective plane blown-…
Let X be a compact complex manifold whose anti-canonical line bundle is big. We show that X admits no non-trivial holomorphic vector fields if it is Gibbs stable (at any level). The proof is based on a vanishing result for measure preserving holomorphic vector fields on X of independent interest. As an application it shown that, in general, if the anti-canonical line bundle is big, there are no holomorphic vector fields on X that are tangent to a non-singular irreducible anti-canonical divisor S on X. More generally, the result holds for varieties with log terminal singularities and log pairs.…

In this thesis we study the principle that extremal objects in differential geometry correspond to stable objects in algebraic geometry. In our introduction we survey the most famous instances of this principle with a view towards the results and background needed in the later chapters. In Part I we discuss the notion of a $Z$-critical metric recently introduced in joint work with Ruadhaí Dervan and Lars Martin Sektnan. We prove a correspondence for existence with an analogue of Bridgeland stability in the large volume limit, and study important properties of the subsolution condition away fro…
The purpose of this article is to give an overview of the construction of moduli spaces of curves from the viewpoint of the log minimal model program for M_g by providing an update of recent developments and discussing future problems. This survey is distinguished from the recent articles of Fedorchuk-Smyth and Morrison in its focus on low degree Hilbert stability of curves.
We study the stability of the normal bundle of canonical genus $8$ curves and prove that on a general curve the bundle is stable. The proof rests on Mukai's description of these curves as linear sections of a Grassmannian $\mathrm{G}(2,6)$. This is the next case of a conjecture by M. Aprodu, G. Farkas, and A. Ortega: the general canonical curve of every genus $g \geq 7$ should have stable normal bundle. We also give some more evidence for this conjecture in higher genus.
We give a criterion for the projectivisation of a reflexive sheaf on a klt space to be induced by a projective representation of the fundamental group of the smooth locus. This criterion is then applied to give a characterisation of finite quotients of projective spaces and Abelian varieties by $\mathbb{Q}$-Chern class (in)equalities and a suitable stability condition. This stability condition is formulated in terms of a naturally defined extension of the tangent sheaf by the structure sheaf. We further examine cases in which this stability condition is satisfied, comparing it to K-semistabili…
We provide a sufficient condition for polarisations of Fano varieties to be K-stable in terms of Tian's alpha invariant, which uses the log canonical threshold to measure singularities of divisors in the linear system associated to the polarisation. This generalises a result of Odaka-Sano in the anti-canonically polarised case, which is the algebraic counterpart of Tian's analytic criterion implying the existence of a Kähler-Einstein metric. As an application, we give new K-stable polarisations of a general degree one del Pezzo surface. We also prove a corresponding result for log K-stability.
In the present paper and the companion paper [8] a probabilistic (statistical mechanical) approach to the study of canonical metrics and measures on a complex algebraic variety X is introduced. On any such variety with positive Kodaira dimension a canonical (birationally invariant) random point processes is defined and shown to converge in probability towards a canonical deterministic measure on X, coinciding with the canonical measure of Song-Tian and Tsuji. The proof is based on new large deviation principle for Gibbs measures with singular Hamiltonians which relies on an asymptotic submean …
The main goal of this paper is to prove the polystability of the logarithmic tangent sheaf $\mathscr T_X(-D)$ of a log canonical pair $(X,D)$ whose canonical bundle $K_X+D$ is ample, generalizing in a significant way a theorem of Enoki. We apply this result and the techniques involved in its proof to get a version of this theorem for stable varieties (the higher dimensional analogue of Deligne-Mumford's stable curves) and to prove the polystability with respect to any polarization of the tangent sheaf of a singular Calabi-Yau variety.
We formulate a notion of stability for maps between polarised varieties which generalises Kontsevich's definition when the domain is a curve and Tian-Donaldson's definition of K-stability when the target is a point. We give some examples, such as Kodaira embeddings and fibrations. We prove the existence of a projective moduli space of canonically polarised stable maps, generalising the Kontsevich-Alexeev moduli space of stable maps in dimensions one and two. We also state an analogue of the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture in this setting, relating stability of maps to the existence of certain ca…
We prove that every smooth Fano threefold from the family No 2.8 is K-stable. Such a Fano threefold is a double cover of the blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^3$ at one point branched along an anti-canonical divisor.
This is the first in a series of two papers studying mu-cscK metrics and muK-stability, from a new perspective evoked from observations in arXiv:2004.06393 and in this first article. The first paper is about a characterization of mu-cscK metrics in terms of Perelman's W-entropy $\check{W}^λ$. We regard Perelman's W-entropy as a functional on the tangent bundle $T \mathcal{H} (X, L)$ of the space $\mathcal{H} (X, L)$ of K"ahler metrics in a given K"ahler class $L$. The critical points of $\check{W}^λ$ turn out to be $μ^λ$-cscK metrics. When $λ\le 0$, the supremum along the fibres gives a smooth…
This is the second in a series of two papers studying $μ$-cscK metrics and $μ$K-stability from a new perspective, inspired by observations on $μ$-character in arXiv:2004.06393 and on Perelman's $W$-entropy in the first paper arXiv:2101.11197. This second paper is devoted to studying a non-archimedean counterpart of Perelman's $μ$-entropy. The concept originally appeared as $μ$-character of polarized family in the previous research arXiv:2004.06393, where we used it to introduce an analogue of CM line bundle adapted to $μ$K-stability. We firstly show some differential of the characteristic $μ$-…
