The purpose of this paper is to prove an equivariant Riemann-Roch theorem for schemes or algebraic spaces with an action of a linear algebraic group $G$. For a $G$-space $X$, this theorem gives an isomorphism between a completion of the equivariant Grothendieck group and a completion of equivariant equivariant Chow groups.
The key to proving this isomorphism is a geometric description of completions of the equivariant Grothendieck group. Besides Riemann-Roch, this result has some purely $K$-theoretic applications. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Köck (in the case of regular schemes) and extend to arbitrary characteristic a result of Segal on representation rings.
In this short note, we prove a comparision theorem between Levine-Serpé's equivariant higher Chow groups of an algebraic variety equipped with an action of a finite group and ordinary higher Chow groups of its fixed points. As a consequence, we show that the equivariant motivic spectral sequence degenerates rationally. This yields a Riemann-Roch Theorem for equivariant algebraic $K$-theory.
For a $G$-scheme $X$ with a given equivariant perfect obstruction theory, we prove a virtual equivariant Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formula, this is an extension of a result of Fantechi-Göttsche to the equivariant context. We also prove a virtual non-abelian localization theorem for schemes over $\mathbb{C}$ with proper actions.
We prove a localization formula in equivariant algebraic $K$-theory for an arbitrary complex algebraic group acting with finite stabilizer on a smooth algebraic space. This extends to non-diagonalizable groups the localization formulas H.A. Nielsen in equivariant $K$-theory of vector bundles and R.W. Thomason for higher $K$-theory of equivariant coherent sheaves. As an application we give a Riemann-Roch formula for quotients of smooth algebraic spaces by proper group actions. This formula extends previous work of B. Toen for stacks with quasi-projective moduli spaces and the authors for quotie…
We give a simple proof of the Riemann-Roch theorem for Deligne-Mumford stacks using the equivariant Riemann-Roch theorem and the localization theorem in equivariant K-theory together with some basic commutative algebra of Artin rings.
We study $T$-linear schemes, a class of objects that includes spherical and Schubert varieties. We provide a localization theorem for the equivariant Chow cohomology of these schemes that does not depend on resolution of singularities. Furthermore, we give an explicit presentation of the equivariant Chow cohomology of possibly singular complete spherical varieties admitting a smooth equivariant envelope (e.g. group embeddings).
The goal of this paper is to prove the Riemann-Roch isomorphism for the higher equivariant K-theory of varieties with action of a linear algebraic group.
We show that the equivariant Chow cohomology ring of a toric variety is naturally isomorphic to the ring of integral piecewise polynomial functions on the associated fan. This gives a large class of singular spaces for which localization holds in equivariant Chow cohomology with integer coefficients. We also compute the equivariant Chow cohomology of toric prevarieties and general complex hypertoric varieties in terms of piecewise polynomial functions.
We give an example of an algebraic torus $T$ such that the group $\operatorname{CH}^2(BT)_{\operatorname{tors}}$ is non-trivial. This answers a question of Blinstein and Merkurjev.
We compute rational equivariant Chow rings with respect to a torus of quiver moduli spaces. We derive a presentation in terms of generators and relations, use torus localization to identify it as a subring of the Chow ring of the fixed point locus, and we compare the two descriptions.
We introduce the most general to date version of the permutation-equivariant quantum K-theory, and express its total descendant potential in terms of cohomological Gromov-Witten invariants. This is the higher-genus analogue of adelic characterization from the paper [7] by Givental-Tonita, and is based on the application of Kawasaki's Riemann-Roch formula to moduli spaces of stable maps.
We apply the machinery developed by the first-named author to the K-theory of coherent G-sheaves on a finite type G-scheme X over a field, where G is a finite group. This leads to a definition of G-equivariant higher Chow groups (different from the Chow groups of classifying spaces constructed by Totaro and generalized to arbitrary X by Edidin-Graham) and an Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence from the G-equivariant higher Chow groups to the higher K-theory of coherent G-sheaves on X. This spectral sequence generalizes the spectral sequence from motivic cohomology to K-theory constructed by Bl…
We produce a Grothendieck transformation from bivariant operational $K$-theory to Chow, with a Riemann-Roch formula that generalizes classical Grothendieck-Verdier-Riemann-Roch. We also produce Grothendieck transformations and Riemann-Roch formulas that generalize the classical Adams-Riemann-Roch and equivariant localization theorems. As applications, we exhibit a projective toric variety $X$ whose equivariant $K$-theory of vector bundles does not surject onto its ordinary $K$-theory, and describe the operational $K$-theory of spherical varieties in terms of fixed-point data. In an appendix, V…
We give a presentation for the (integral) torus-equivariant Chow ring of the quot scheme, a smooth compactification of the space of rational curves of degree d in the Grassmannian. For this presentation, we refine Evain's extension of the method of Goresky, Kottwitz, and MacPherson to express the torus-equivariant Chow ring in terms of the torus-fixed points and explicit relations coming from the geometry of families of torus-invariant curves. As part of this calculation, we give a complete description of the torus-invariant curves on the quot scheme and show that each family is a product of p…
We define bivariant algebraic K-theory and bivariant derived Chow on the homotopy category of derived schemes over a smooth base. The orientation on the latter corresponds to virtual Gysin homomorphisms. We then provide a morphism between these two bivariant theories and compare the two orientations. This comparison then yields a homological and cohomological Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formula for virtual classes.
We describe the equivariant Chow ring of the wonderful compactification $X$ of a symmetric space of minimal rank, via restriction to the associated toric variety $Y$. Also, we show that the restrictions to $Y$ of the tangent bundle $T_X$ and its logarithmic analogue $S_X$ decompose into a direct sum of line bundles. This yields closed formulae for the equivariant Chern classes of $T_X$ and $S_X$, and, in turn, for the Chern classes of reductive groups considered by Kiritchenko.
For a smooth quasi-projective scheme $X$ over a field $k$ with an action of a reductive group, we establish a spectral sequence connecting the equivariant and the ordinary higher Chow groups of $X$. For $X$ smooth and projective, we show that this spectral sequence degenerates, leading to an explicit relation between the equivariant and the ordinary higher Chow groups. We obtain several applications to algebraic $K$-theory. We show that for a reductive group $G$ acting on a smooth projective scheme $X$, the forgetful map $K^G_i(X) \to K_i(X)$ induces an isomorphism $K^G_i(X)/{I_G K^G_i(X)} \co…
Let $G$ be the product $GL_r(C) \times (C^\times)^n$. We show that the $G$-equivariant Chow class of a $G$ orbit closure in the space of $r$-by-$n$ matrices is determined by a matroid. To do this, we split the natural surjective map from the $G$ equvariant Chow ring of the space of matrices to the torus equivariant Chow ring of the Grassmannian. The splitting takes the class of a Schubert variety to the corresponding factorial Schur polynomial, and also has the property that the class of a subvariety of the Grassmannian is mapped to the class of the closure of those matrices whose row span is …
For a toric variety X_P determined by a rational polyhedral fan P in a lattice N, Payne shows that the equivariant Chow cohomology of X_P is the Sym(N)--algebra C^0(P) of integral piecewise polynomial functions on P. We use the Cartan-Eilenberg spectral sequence to analyze the associated reflexive sheaf on Proj(N), showing that the Chern classes depend on subtle geometry of P and giving criteria for the splitting of the sheaf as a sum of line bundles. For certain fans associated to the reflection arrangement A_n, we describe a connection between C^0(P) and logarithmic vector fields tangent to …
In this paper we investigate Murre's conjecture on the Chow--Künneth decomposition for two classes of examples. We look at the universal families of smooth curves over spaces which dominate the moduli space $\cM_g$, in genus at most 8 and show existence of a Chow--Künneth decomposition. The second class of examples include the representation varieties of a finitely generated group with one relation. This is done in the setting of equivariant cohomology and equivariant Chow groups to get equivariant Chow--Künneth decompositions.
We prove an equivariant Riemann-Roch formula for divisors on algebraic curves over perfect fields. By reduction to the known case of curves over algebraically closed fields, we first show a preliminary formula with coefficients in Q. We then prove and shed some further light on a divisibility result that yields a formula with integral coefficients. Moreover, we give variants of the main theorem for equivariant locally free sheaves of higher rank.
We introduce twisted permutation-equivariant GW-invariants, and compute them in terms of untwisted ones. The computation is based on Grothendieck-like RR formula corresponding to Adams' operations from K-theory to itself, and the result can be understood as a "quantum" version of such Adams-RR. As in the case of cohomological quantum RR theorem [3], the result is applied to express the invariants of bundle and super-bundle spaces in terms of those of the base. The bonus feature of permutation-equivariant K-theory is that the twisting classes can be understood as the simpler kappa-classes of Ka…
We show that, in characteristic zero, the obvious integral version of the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formula obtained by clearing the denominators of the Todd and Chern characters is true (without having to divide the Chow groups by their torsion subgroups). The proof introduces an alternative to Grothendieck's strategy: we use resolution of singularities and the weak factorization theorem for birational maps.
In this paper we develop an equivariant intersection theory for actions of algebraic groups on algebraic schemes. The theory is based on our construction of equivariant Chow groups. They are algebraic analogues of equivariant cohomology groups which satsify the formal properties of ordinary Chow groups. In addition, they enjoy many of the properties of equivariant cohomology. The principal results are: (1) We prove the existence of canonical intersection products on the Chow groups of geometric quotients of smooth varieties- even when the stabilizers of geometric points are non-reduced. (2) We…
For $X$ a smooth scheme acted on by a linear algebraic group $G$ and $p$ a prime, the equivariant Chow ring $CH^*_G(X)\otimes \mathbb{F}_p$ is an unstable algebra over the Steenrod algebra. We compute Lannes's $T$-functor applied to $CH^*_G(X)\otimes \mathbb{F}_p$. As an application, we compute the localization of $CH^*_G(X)\otimes \mathbb{F}_p$ away from $n$-nilpotent modules over the Steenrod algebra, affirming a conjecture of Totaro as a special case. The case when $X$ is a point and $n = 1$ generalizes and recovers an algebro-geometric version of Quillen's stratification theorem proved by …
We use the formalism of traces in higher categories to prove a common generalization of the holomorphic Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula and the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem. The proof is quite different from the original one proposed by Grothendieck et al.: it relies on the interplay between self dualities of quasi- and ind- coherent sheaves on $X$ and formal deformation theory of Gaitsgory-Rozenblyum. In particular, we give a description of the Todd class in terms of the difference of two formal group structures on the derived loop scheme $\mathcal LX$. The equivariant case is reduced to…
We propose an algebraic Riemann-Roch formula for moving flat bundles on contant families in characteristic zero with values in the ring of algebraic differential characters. This formula lifts Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formula in the Chow groups and Bismut-Lott formula in the odd dimensional Betti cohomology with $\C/\Z$ coefficients over the field of complex numbers.
Let X be a smooth projective toric surface, and H^d(X) the Hilbert scheme parametrising the length d zero-dimensional subschemes of X. We compute the rational Chow ring A^*(H^d(X))\_Q. More precisely, if T is the two-dimensional torus contained in X, we compute the rational equivariant Chow ring A\_T^*(H^d(X))\_Q and the usual Chow ring is an explicit quotient of the equivariant Chow ring. The case of some quasi-projective toric surfaces such as the affine plane are described by our method too.
Naruki gave an explicit construction of the moduli space of marked cubic surfaces, starting from a toric variety and proceeding with blow ups and contractions. Using his result, we compute the Chow groups and the Chern classes of this moduli space. As an application we relate a recent result of Freitag on the Hilbert polynomial of a certain ring of modular forms to the Riemann-Roch theorem for the moduli space.
Let H(d) be the (open) Hilbert scheme of rational normal curves of degree d in P^d. A presentation of the integral Chow ring of H(d) is given via equivariant Chow ring computations. Included also in the paper are algebraic computations of the integral equivariant Chow rings of the algebraic groups O(n), SO(2k+1). The results for S0(3)=PGL(2) are needed for the Hilbert scheme calculation.
In this article, we consider regular projective arithmetic schemes in the context of Arakelov geometry, any of which is endowed with an action of the diagonalisable group scheme associated to a finite cyclic group and with an equivariant very ample invertible sheaf. For any equivariant morphism between such arithmetic schemes, which is smooth over the generic fibre, we define a direct image map between corresponding higher equivariant arithmetic K-groups and we discuss its transitivity property. Then we use the localization sequence of higher arithmetic K-groups and the higher arithmetic conce…
We derive a version of the Rothenberg-Steenrod, fiber-to-base, spectral sequence for cohomology theories represented in model categories of simplicial presheaves. We then apply this spectral sequence to calculate the equivariant motivic cohomology of the general linear group with a general Gm-action, this coincides with the equivariant higher Chow groups. Some of the equivariant motivic cohomology of a Stiefel variety with a general Gm-action is deduced as a corollary.
We show a Riemann-Roch theorem for group ring bundles over an arithmetic surface; this is expressed using the higher adeles of Beilinson-Parshin and the tame symbol via a theory of adelic equivariant Chow groups and Chern classes. The theorem is obtained by combining a group ring coefficient version of the local Riemann-Roch formula as in Kapranov-Vasserot with results on K-groups of group rings and an explicit description of group ring bundles over P^1. Our set-up provides an extension of several aspects of the classical Fr"ohlich theory of the Galois module structure of rings of integers of …
We compute the integral Chow ring of the quotient stack $[(\mathbb{P}^1)^n/PGL_2]$, which contains $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$ as a dense open, and determine a natural $\mathbb{Z}$-basis for the Chow ring in terms of certain ordered incidence strata. We further show that all $\mathbb{Z}$-linear relations between the classes of ordered incidence strata arise from an analogue of the WDVV relations in $A^\bullet(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n})$. Next we compute the classes of unordered incidence strata in the integral Chow ring of the quotient stack $[{\rm Sym}^n\mathbb{P}^1/PGL_2]$ and classify all $\math…
This is the first article in an upcoming series of papers. They have arisen through an attempt to answer open questions of Deligne proposed in "Le determinant de la cohomologie", Contemp. Mathematics 67 (1987). It amounts to functorial and metrized versions of the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem, as well as a Lefschetz-Riemann-Roch formula in the sense of Thomason, cf. "Lefschetz-Riemann-Roch theorem and coherent trace formula" Ann. Sci. Ec. Norm. Sup. 18 (1985), Theorem 3.5. In this article we treat various preliminary results on virtual categories which are the categories where the Deligne…
Let G be a torus and M a G-Hamiltonian manifold with Kostant line bundle L and proper moment map. Let P be the weight lattice of G. We consider a parameter k and the multiplicity $m(λ,k)$ of the quantized representation associated to M and the k-th power of L . We prove that the weighted sum $\sum m(λ,k) f(λ/k)$ of the value of a test function f on points of the lattice $P/k$ has an asymptotic development in terms of the twisted Duistermaat-Heckman distributions associated to the graded Todd class of M. When M is compact, and f polynomial, the asymptotic series is finite and exact.
We extract genus $0$ consequences of the all genera quantum HRR formula proved in Part IX. This includes re-proving and generalizing the adelic characterization of genus $0$ quantum K-theory found in [Givental A., Tonita V., in Symplectic, Poisson, and Noncommutative Geometry, <I>Math. Sci. Res. Inst. Publ.</I>, Vol. 62, Cambridge University Press, New York, 2014, 43-91]. Extending some results of Part VIII, we derive the invariance of a certain variety (the "big J-function"), constructed from the genus $0$ descendant potential of permutation-equivariant quantum K-theory, under the action of c…
We show that a cone theorem for ${\mathbbA}^1-homotopy invariant contravariant functors implies the vanishing of the positive degree part of the operational Chow cohomology rings of a large class of affine varieties. We also discuss how this vanishing relates to a number of questions about representing Chow cohomology classes of GIT quotients in terms of equivariant cycles.
Given a finite group G, we develop a theory of G-equivariant noncommutative motives. This theory provides a well-adapted framework for the study of G-schemes, Picard groups of schemes, G-algebras, 2-cocycles, equivariant algebraic K-theory, orbifold cohomology theory, etc. Among other results, we relate our theory with its commutative counterpart as well as with Panin's motivic theory. As a first application, we extend Panin's computations, concerning twisted projective homogeneous varieties, to a large class of invariants. As a second application, we prove that whenever the category of perfec…
In the present paper we introduce and study the notion of an equivariant pretheory: basic examples include equivariant Chow groups, equivariant K-theory and equivariant algebraic cobordism. To extend this set of examples we define an equivariant (co)homology theory with coefficients in a Rost cycle module and provide a version of Merkurjev's (equivariant K-theory) spectral sequence for such a theory. As an application we generalize the theorem of Karpenko-Merkurjev on G-torsors and rational cycles; to every G-torsor E and a G-equivariant pretheory we associate a graded ring which serves as an …
Let $G$ be a complex, linear algebraic group acting on an algebraic space $X$. The purpose of this paper is to prove a Riemann-Roch theorem (Theorem 5.3) which gives a description of the completion of the equivariant Grothendieck group $G_0(G,X)$ at any maximal ideal of the representation ring $R(G) \otimes \C$ in terms of equivariant cycles. The main new technique for proving this theorem is our non-abelian completion theorem (Theorem 4.3) for equivariant $K$-theory. Theorem 4.3 generalizes the classical localization theorems for diagonalizable group actions to arbitrary groups.
We give a proof of Pixton's generalized Faber-Zagier relations in the tautological Chow ring of $\overline M_{g,n}$. The strategy is very similar to the work of Pandharipande-Pixton-Zvonkine, who have given a proof of the same result in cohomology. The main tool is the Givental-Teleman classification of semisimple cohomological field theories, which, while in general only known in cohomology, via virtual localization can be shown to be also valid in Chow for the equivariant Gromov-Witten theory of the projective line. We obtain the relations just from this theory.
In the present paper we extend the Riemann-Roch formalism to structure algebras of moment graphs. We introduce and study the Chern character and pushforwards for twisted fibrations of moment graphs. We prove an analogue of the Riemann-Roch theorem for moment graphs. As an application, we obtain the Riemann-Roch type theorem for equivariant $K$-theory of some Kac-Moody flag varieties.
In this paper we give an explicit formula for the Riemann-Roch map for singular schemes which are quotients of smooth schemes by diagonalizable groups. As an application we obtain a simple proof of a formula for the Todd class of a simplicial toric variety. An equivariant version of this formula was previously obtained for complete simplicial toric varieties by Brion and Vergne using different techniques.
