Various versions of the Dynamical Systems Method (DSM) are proposed for solving linear ill-posed problems with bounded and unbounded operators. Convergence of the proposed methods is proved. Some new results concerning discrepancy principle for choosing regularization parameter are obtained.
In this article a modified Levenberg-Marquardt method coupled with a Kaczmarz strategy for obtaining stable solutions of nonlinear systems of ill-posed operator equations is investigated. We show that the proposed method is a convergent regularization method. Numerical tests are presented for a non-linear inverse doping problem based on a bipolar model.
In this article we combine the projective Landweber method, recently proposed by the authors, with Kaczmarz's method for solving systems of non-linear ill-posed equations. The underlying assumption used in this work is the tangential cone condition. We show that the proposed iteration is a convergent regularization method. Numerical tests are presented for a non-linear inverse problem related to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, indicating a superior performance of the proposed method when compared with other well established iterations. Our preliminary investigation indicates that the resulting i…
Immersed finite element (IFE) methods are a group of long-existing numerical methods for solving interface problems on unfitted meshes. A core argument of the methods is to avoid mesh regeneration procedure when solving moving interface problems. Despite the various applications in moving interface problems, a complete theoretical study on the convergence behavior is still missing. This research is devoted to close the gap between numerical experiments and theory. We present the first fully discrete analysis including the stability and optimal error estimates for a backward Euler IFE method fo…
In this paper, we develop a class of robust numerical methods for solving dynamical systems with multiple time scales. We first represent the solution of a multiscale dynamical system as a transformation of a slowly varying solution. Then, under the scale separation assumption, we provide a systematic way to construct the transformation map and derive the dynamic equation for the slowly varying solution. We also provide the convergence analysis of the proposed method. Finally, we present several numerical examples, including ODE system with three and four separated time scales to demonstrate t…
The iterative problem of solving nonlinear equations is studied. A new Newton like iterative method with adjustable parameters is designed based on the dynamic system theory. In order to avoid the derivative function in the iterative scheme, the difference quotient is used instead of the derivative. Different from the existing methods, the difference quotient scheme in this paper has higher accuracy. Thus, the new iterative method is suitable for a wider range of initial values. Finally, several numerical examples are given to verify the practicability and superiority of the method.
We investigate iterated Tikhonov methods coupled with a Kaczmarz strategy for obtaining stable solutions of nonlinear systems of ill-posed operator equations. We show that the proposed method is a convergent regularization method. In the case of noisy data we propose a modification, the so called loping iterated Tikhonov-Kaczmarz method, where a sequence of relaxation parameters is introduced and a different stopping rule is used. Convergence analysis for this method is also provided.
We investigate the iterative methods proposed by Maz'ya and Kozlov (see [KM1], [KM2]) for solving ill-posed inverse problems modeled by partial differential equations. We consider linear evolutionary problems of elliptic, hyperbolic and parabolic types. Each iteration of the analyzed methods consists in the solution of a well posed problem (boundary value problem or initial value problem respectively). The iterations are described as powers of affine operators, as in [KM2]. We give alternative convergence proofs for the algorithms by using spectral theory and the fact that the linear parts of …
Recently, inverse problems have attracted more and more attention in computational mathematics and become increasingly important in engineering applications. After the discretization, many of inverse problems are reduced to linear systems. Due to the typical ill-posedness of inverse problems, the reduced linear systems are often ill-posed, especially when their scales are large. This brings great computational difficulty. Particularly, a small perturbation in the right side of an ill-posed linear system may cause a dramatical change in the solution. Therefore, regularization methods should be …
This paper proposes a new approach for solving ill-posed nonlinear inverse problems. For ease of explanation of the proposed approach, we use the example of lung electrical impedance tomography (EIT), which is known to be a nonlinear and ill-posed inverse problem. Conventionally, penalty-based regularization methods have been used to deal with the ill-posed problem. However, experiences over the last three decades have shown methodological limitations in utilizing prior knowledge about tracking expected imaging features for medial diagnosis. The proposed method's paradigm is completely differe…
In this work, a novel second-order nonstandard finite difference (NSFD) method that preserves simultaneously the positivity and local asymptotic stability of one-dimensional autonomous dynamical systems is introduced and analyzed. This method is based on novel non-local approximations for right-hand side functions of differential equations in combination with nonstandard denominator functions. The obtained results not only resolve the contradiction between the dynamic consistency and high-order accuracy of NSFD methods but also improve and extend some well-known results that have been publishe…
We develop innovative algorithms for solving the strong-constraint formulation of four-dimensional variational data assimilation in large-scale applications. We present a space-time decomposition approach that employs domain decomposition along both the spatial and temporal directions in the overlapping case and involves partitioning of both the solution and the operators. Starting from the global functional defined on the entire domain, we obtain a type of regularized local functionals on the set of subdomains providing the order reduction of both the predictive and the data assimilation mode…
The joint bidiagonalization process of a matrix pair $\{A,L\}$ can be used to develop iterative regularization algorithms for large scale ill-posed problems in general-form Tikhonov regularization $\min_x\left\{\|Ax-b\|_{2}^2+λ^2\|Lx\|_{2}^2\right\}$ or the essentially equivalent one $\min\|Lx\|_{2} \ \mbox{\rm s.t.} \ x\in\mathcal{S} = \{x|\ \|Ax-b\|_{2}\leq η\|e\|_{2}\}$, where $e$ is a Gaussian white noise, $L$ is a regularization matrix and $η>1$ slightly. A bottleneck of the algorithms is that a large scale inner least squares problem with $(A^{T}, L^{T})^{T}$ as the coefficient matrix mu…
CDIO-CT collaborative strategy for solving complex STEM problems in system modeling and simulation: an illustration of solving the period of mathematical pendulum
In this contribution, the clustering procedure based on K-Means algorithm is studied as an inverse problem, which is a special case of the illposed problems. The attempts to improve the quality of the clustering inverse problem drive to reduce the input data via Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Since there exists a theorem by Ding and He that links the cardinality of the optimal clusters found with K-Means and the cardinality of the selected informative PCA components, the computational experiments tested the theorem between two quantitative features selection methods: Kaiser criteria (base…
In this paper, a residual-type a posteriori error estimator is proposed and analyzed for a modified weak Galerkin finite element method solving linear elasticity problems. The estimator is proven to be both reliable and efficient because it provides upper and lower bounds on the actual error in a discrete energy norm. Numerical experiments are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the this error estimator.
We propose and analyze a family of successive projection methods whose step direction is the same as Landweber method for solving nonlinear ill-posed problems that satisfy the Tangential Cone Condition (TCC). This family enconpasses Landweber method, the minimal error method, and the steepest descent method; thush providing an unified framework for the analysis of these methods. Moreover, we define in this family new methods which are convergent for the constant of the TCC in a range twice as large as the one required for the Landweber and other gradient type methods. The TCC is widely used in…
In this paper, the author present reliable symbolic algorithms for solving a general bordered tridiagonal linear system. The first algorithm is based on the LU decomposition of the coefficient matrix and the computational cost of it is O(n). The second is based on The Sherman-Morrison-Woodbury formula. The algorithms are implementable to the Computer Algebra System (CAS) such as MAPLE, MATLAB and MATHEMATICA. Three examples are presented for the sake of illustration.
