A version of the Dynamical Systems Method (DSM) for solving ill-conditioned linear algebraic systems is studied in this paper. An {\it a priori} and {\it a posteriori} stopping rules are justified. An iterative scheme is constructed for solving ill-conditioned linear algebraic systems.
By adding entropic regularization, multi-marginal optimal transport problems can be transformed into tensor scaling problems, which can be solved numerically using the multi-marginal Sinkhorn algorithm. The main computational bottleneck of this algorithm is the repeated evaluation of marginals. Recently, it has been suggested that this evaluation can be accelerated when the application features an underlying graphical model. In this work, we accelerate the computation further by combining the tensor network dual of the graphical model with additional low-rank approximations. We provide an exam…
We are interested in solving linear systems arising from three applications: (1) kernel methods in machine learning, (2) discretization of boundary integral equations from mathematical physics, and (3) Schur complements formed in the factorization of many large sparse matrices. The coefficient matrices are often data-sparse in the sense that their off-diagonal blocks have low numerical ranks; specifically, we focus on "hierarchically off-diagonal low-rank (HODLR)" matrices. We introduce algorithms for factorizing HODLR matrices and for applying the factorizations on a GPU. The algorithms lever…
PDE-constrained optimization problems arise in a broad number of applications such as hyperthermia cancer treatment or blood flow simulation. Discretization of the optimization problem and using a Lagrangian approach result in a large-scale saddle-point system, which is challenging to solve, and acquiring a full space-time solution is often infeasible. We present a new framework to efficiently compute a low-rank approximation to the solution by reformulating the KKT system into a Sylvester-like matrix equation. This matrix equation is subsequently projected onto a small subspace via an iterati…
Differential algebraic Riccati equations are at the heart of many applications in control theory. They are time-depent, matrix-valued, and in particular nonlinear equations that require special methods for their solution. Low-rank methods have been used heavily computing a low-rank solution at every step of a time-discretization. We propose the use of an all-at-once space-time solution leading to a large nonlinear space-time problem for which we propose the use of a Newton-Kleinman iteration. Approximating the space-time problem in low-rank form requires fewer applications of the discretized d…
Atomic and molecular breakup reactions, such as multiple-ionisation, are described by a driven Schrödinger equation. This equation is equivalent to a high-dimensional Helmholtz equation and it has solutions that are outgoing waves, emerging from the target. We show that these waves can be described by a low-rank approximation. For 2D problems this it a matrix product of two low-rank matrices, for 3D problems it is a low-rank tensor decomposition. We propose an iterative method that solves, in an alternating way, for these low-rank components of the scattered wave. We illustrate the method with…
A rank-adaptive integrator for the dynamical low-rank approximation of matrix and tensor differential equations is presented. The fixed-rank integrator recently proposed by two of the authors is extended to allow for an adaptive choice of the rank, using subspaces that are generated by the integrator itself. The integrator first updates the evolving bases and then does a Galerkin step in the subspace generated by both the new and old bases, which is followed by rank truncation to a given tolerance. It is shown that the adaptive low-rank integrator retains the exactness, robustness and symmetry…
Immersed finite element (IFE) methods are a group of long-existing numerical methods for solving interface problems on unfitted meshes. A core argument of the methods is to avoid mesh regeneration procedure when solving moving interface problems. Despite the various applications in moving interface problems, a complete theoretical study on the convergence behavior is still missing. This research is devoted to close the gap between numerical experiments and theory. We present the first fully discrete analysis including the stability and optimal error estimates for a backward Euler IFE method fo…
In this paper, we develop a class of robust numerical methods for solving dynamical systems with multiple time scales. We first represent the solution of a multiscale dynamical system as a transformation of a slowly varying solution. Then, under the scale separation assumption, we provide a systematic way to construct the transformation map and derive the dynamic equation for the slowly varying solution. We also provide the convergence analysis of the proposed method. Finally, we present several numerical examples, including ODE system with three and four separated time scales to demonstrate t…
We introduce a dynamical low-rank method to reduce the computational complexity for solving the multi-scale multi-dimensional linear transport equation. The method is based on a macro-micro decomposition of the equation. The proposed numerical method uses the low rank approximation only for the micro part of the solution. The time and spatial discretizations are done properly so that the overall scheme is second order accurate and asymptotic-preserving (AP); that is, in the diffusive regime, the scheme becomes a macroscopic solver for the limiting diffusion equation and is automatically low ra…
Deterministic models for radiation transport describe the density of radiation particles moving through a background material. In radiation therapy applications, the phase space of this density is composed of energy, spatial position and direction of flight. The resulting six-dimensional phase space prohibits fine numerical discretizations, which are essential for the construction of accurate and reliable treatment plans. In this work, we tackle the high dimensional phase space through a dynamical low-rank approximation of the particle density. Dynamical low-rank approximation (DLRA) evolves t…
The iterative problem of solving nonlinear equations is studied. A new Newton like iterative method with adjustable parameters is designed based on the dynamic system theory. In order to avoid the derivative function in the iterative scheme, the difference quotient is used instead of the derivative. Different from the existing methods, the difference quotient scheme in this paper has higher accuracy. Thus, the new iterative method is suitable for a wider range of initial values. Finally, several numerical examples are given to verify the practicability and superiority of the method.
Efficient and accurate numerical approximation of the full Boltzmann equation has been a longstanding challenging problem in kinetic theory. This is mainly due to the high dimensionality of the problem and the complicated collision operator. In this work, we propose a highly efficient adaptive low rank method for the Boltzmann equation, concerning in particular the steady state computation. This method employs the fast Fourier spectral method (for the collision operator) and the dynamical low rank method to obtain computational efficiency. An adaptive strategy is introduced to incorporate the …
In this paper, we propose a new splitting algorithm for dynamical low-rank approximation motivated by the fibre bundle structure of the set of fixed rank matrices. We first introduce a geometric description of the set of fixed rank matrices which relies on a natural parametrization of matrices. More precisely, it is endowed with the structure of analytic principal bundle, with an explicit description of local charts. For matrix differential equations, we introduce a first order numerical integrator working in local coordinates. The resulting algorithm can be interpreted as a particular splitti…
Radiation transport problems are posed in a high-dimensional phase space, limiting the use of finely resolved numerical simulations. An emerging tool to efficiently reduce computational costs and memory footprint in such settings is dynamical low-rank approximation (DLRA). Despite its efficiency, numerical methods for DLRA need to be carefully constructed to guarantee stability while preserving crucial properties of the original problem. Important physical effects that one likes to preserve with DLRA include capturing the diffusion limit in the high-scattering regimes as well as dissipating en…
We propose and analyse a numerical integrator that computes a low-rank approximation to large time-dependent matrices that are either given explicitly via their increments or are the unknown solution to a matrix differential equation. Furthermore, the integrator is extended to the approximation of time-dependent tensors by Tucker tensors of fixed multilinear rank. The proposed low-rank integrator is different from the known projector-splitting integrator for dynamical low-rank approximation, but it retains the important robustness to small singular values that has so far been known only for th…
The existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to dynamical low-rank evolution problems for parabolic partial differential equations in two spatial dimensions is shown, covering also non-diagonal diffusion in the elliptic part. The proof is based on a variational time-stepping scheme on the low-rank manifold. Moreover, this scheme is shown to be closely related to practical methods for computing such low-rank evolutions.
