In this work we present a low-rank algorithm for computing low-rank approximations of large-scale Lyapunov operator $φ$-functions. These computations play a crucial role in implementing of matrix-valued exponential integrators for large-scale stiff matrix differential equations, where the (approximate) solutions are of low rank. The proposed method employs a scaling and recursive procedure, complemented by a quasi-backward error analysis to determine the optimal parameters. The computational cost is primarily determined by the multiplication of sparse matrices with block vectors. Numerical experiments validate the effectiveness of the proposed method as a foundational tool for matrix-valued exponential integrators in solving differential Lyapunov equations and Riccati equations.
We present a new linearly implicit exponential integrator that preserves the polynomial first integrals or Lyapunov functions for the conservative and dissipative stiff equations, respectively. The method is tested by both oscillated ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations, e.g., an averaged system in wind-induced oscillation, the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam systems, and the polynomial pendulum oscillators. The numerical simulations confirm the conservative properties of the proposed method and demonstrate its good behavior in superior running speed when compared with fully imp…
In this paper, we develop efficient and accurate evaluation for the Lyapunov operator function $φ_l(\mathcal{L}_A)[Q],$ where $φ_l(\cdot)$ is the function related to the exponential, $\mathcal{L}_A$ is a Lyapunov operator and $Q$ is a symmetric and full-rank matrix. An important application of the algorithm is to the matrix-valued exponential integrators for matrix differential equations such as differential Lyapunov equations and differential Riccati equations. The method is exploited by using the modified scaling and squaring procedure combined with the truncated Taylor series. A quasi-backw…
In this paper, combining the ideas of exponential integrators and discrete gradients, we propose and analyze a new structure-preserving exponential scheme for the conservative or dissipative system $\dot{y} = Q(M y + \nabla U (y))$, where $Q$ is a $d\times d$ skew-symmetric or negative semidefinite real matrix, $M$ is a $d\times d$ symmetric real matrix, and $U : \mathbb{R}^d\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is a differentiable function. We present two properties of the new scheme. The paper is accompanied by numerical results that demonstrate the remarkable superiority of our new scheme in comparison wi…
Since almost twenty years, modified Patankar--Runge--Kutta (MPRK) methods have proven to be efficient and robust numerical schemes that preserve positivity and conservativity of the production-destruction system irrespectively of the time step size chosen. Due to these advantageous properties they are used for a wide variety of applications. Nevertheless, until now, an analytic investigation of the stability of MPRK schemes is still missing, since the usual approach by means of Dahlquist's equation is not feasible. Therefore, we consider a positive and conservative 2D test problem and provide …
A variable stepsize exponential multistep integrator, with contour integral approximation of the operator-valued exponential functions, is proposed for solving semilinear parabolic equations with nonsmooth initial data. By this approach, the exponential k-step method would have $k$th-order convergence in approximating a mild solution, possibly nonsmooth at the initial time. In consistency with the theoretical analysis, a numerical example shows that the method can achieve high-order convergence in the maximum norm for semilinear parabolic equations with discontinuous initial data.
In this work, we provide the first strong convergence result of numerical approximation of a general second order semilinear stochastic fractional order evolution equation involving a Caputo derivative in time of order $α\in(\frac 34, 1)$ and driven by Gaussian and non-Gaussian noises simultaneously more useful in concrete applications. The Gaussian noise considered here is a Hilbert space valued Q-Wiener process and the non-Gaussian noise is defined through compensated Poisson random measure associated to a Lévy process. The linear operator is not necessary self-adjoint. The fractional stocha…
The numerical simulation of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for quantum systems is a very active research topic. Yet, resolving the solution sufficiently in space and time is challenging and mandates the use of modern high-performance computing systems. While classical parallelization techniques in space can reduce the runtime per time-step, novel parallel-in-time integrators expose parallelism in the temporal domain. They work, however, not very well for wave-type problems such as the Schrödinger equation. One notable exception is the rational approximation of exponential integrators.…
