Immersed finite element (IFE) methods are a group of long-existing numerical methods for solving interface problems on unfitted meshes. A core argument of the methods is to avoid mesh regeneration procedure when solving moving interface problems. Despite the various applications in moving interface problems, a complete theoretical study on the convergence behavior is still missing. This research is devoted to close the gap between numerical experiments and theory. We present the first fully discrete analysis including the stability and optimal error estimates for a backward Euler IFE method for solving parabolic moving interface problems. Numerical results are also presented to validate the analysis.
This paper presents a lowest-order immersed Raviart-Thomas mixed triangular finite element method for solving elliptic interface problems on unfitted meshes independent of the interface. In order to achieve the optimal convergence rates on unfitted meshes, an immersed finite element finite (IFE) is constructed by modifying the traditional Raviart-Thomas element. Some important properties are derived including the unisolvence of IFE basis functions, the optimal approximation capabilities of the IFE space and the corresponding commuting digram. Optimal error estimates are rigorously proved for t…
We present a method of CutFEM type for the Poisson problem with either Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. The computational mesh is obtained from a background (typically uniform Cartesian) mesh by retaining only the elements intersecting the domain where the problem is posed. The resulting mesh does not thus fit the boundary of the problem domain. Several finite element methods (XFEM, CutFEM) adapted to such meshes have been recently proposed. The originality of the present article consists in avoiding integration over the elements cut by the boundary of the problem domain, while preser…
Thanks to a finite element method, we solve numerically parabolic partial differential equations on complex domains by avoiding the mesh generation, using a regular background mesh, not fitting the domain and its real boundary exactly. Our technique follows the phi-FEM paradigm, which supposes that the domain is given by a level-set function. In this paper, we prove a priori error estimates in l2(H1) and linf(L2) norms for an implicit Euler discretization in time. We give numerical illustrations to highlight the performances of phi-FEM, which combines optimal convergence accuracy, easy impleme…
In this article, we develop and analyze a finite element method with the first family Nédélec elements of the lowest degree for solving a Maxwell interface problem modeled by a $\mathbf{H}(\text{curl})$-elliptic equation on unfitted meshes. To capture the jump conditions optimally, we construct and use $\mathbf{H}(\text{curl})$ immersed finite element (IFE) functions on interface elements while keep using the standard Nédélec functions on all the non-interface elements. We establish a few important properties for the IFE functions including the unisolvence according to the edge degrees of free…

We present a novel hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method on unfitted meshes for single-phase Darcy flow in a fractured porous media. In particular we apply the HDG methodology to the recently introduced reinterpreted discrete fracture model (RDFM) [Xu & Yang, 2021 submitted] that use Dirac-$δ$ functions to model both conductive and blocking fractures. Due to the use of Dirac-$δ$ function approach for the fractures, our numerical scheme naturally allows for unfitted meshes with respect to the fractures, which is the major novelty of the proposed scheme. Moreover, the scheme is locall…
In this work, we consider the modeling of inclusions in the material using an unfitted finite element method. In the unfitted methods, structured background meshes are used and only the underlying finite element space is modified to incorporate the discontinuities, such as inclusions. Hence, the unfitted methods provide a more flexible framework for modeling the materials with multiple inclusions. We employ the method of Lagrange multipliers for enforcing the interface conditions between the inclusions and matrix, this gives rise to the linear system of equations of saddle point type. We utili…

In this work, we present an adaptive unfitted finite element scheme that combines the aggregated finite element method with parallel adaptive mesh refinement. We introduce a novel scalable distributed-memory implementation of the resulting scheme on locally-adapted Cartesian forest-of-trees meshes. We propose a two-step algorithm to construct the finite element space at hand by means of a discrete extension operator that carefully mixes aggregation constraints of problematic degrees of freedom, which get rid of the small cut cell problem, and standard hanging degree of freedom constraints, whi…
We design an adaptive unfitted finite element method on the Cartesian mesh with hanging nodes. We derive an hp-reliable and efficient residual type a posteriori error estimate on K-meshes. A key ingredient is a novel hp-domain inverse estimate which allows us to prove the stability of the finite element method under practical interface resolving mesh conditions and also prove the lower bound of the hp a posteriori error estimate. Numerical examples are included.
An arbitrarily high order unfitted finite element method for elliptic interface problems with automatic mesh generation, Part II. Piecewise-smooth interfaces
Maxwell interface problems are of great importance in many electromagnetic applications. Unfitted mesh methods are especially attractive in 3D computation as they can circumvent generating complex 3D interface-fitted meshes. However, many unfitted mesh methods rely on non-conforming approximation spaces, which may cause a loss of accuracy for solving Maxwell equations, and the widely-used penalty techniques in the literature may not help in recovering the optimal convergence. In this article, we provide a remedy by developing Nédélec-type immersed finite element spaces with a Petrov-Galerkin s…
Unfitted (also known as embedded or immersed) finite element approximations of partial differential equations are very attractive because they have much lower geometrical requirements than standard body-fitted formulations. These schemes do not require body-fitted unstructured mesh generation. In turn, the numerical integration becomes more involved, because one has to compute integrals on portions of cells (only the interior part). In practice, these methods are restricted to level-set (implicit) geometrical representations, which drastically limit their application. Complex geometries in ind…
An interface/boundary-unfitted eXtended hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (X-HDG) method of arbitrary order is proposed for linear elasticity interface problems on unfitted meshes with respect to the interface and domain boundary. The method uses piecewise polynomials of degrees $k\ (>= 1)$ and $k-1$ respectively for the displacement and stress approximations in the interior of elements inside the subdomains separated by the interface, and piecewise polynomials of degree $k$ for the numerical traces of the displacement on the inter-element boundaries inside the subdomains and on the interfac…
A virtual element method (VEM) with the first order optimal convergence order is developed for solving two-dimensional Maxwell interface problems on a special class of polygonal meshes that are cut by the interface from a background unfitted mesh. A novel virtual space is introduced on a virtual triangulation of the polygonal mesh satisfying a maximum angle condition, which shares exactly the same degrees of freedom as the usual H(curl)-conforming virtual space. This new virtual space serves as the key to prove that the optimal error bounds of the VEM are independent of high aspect ratio of th…
In this paper we present an immersed weak Galerkin method for solving second-order elliptic interface problems on polygonal meshes, where the meshes do not need to be aligned with the interface. The discrete space consists of constants on each edge and broken linear polynomials satisfying the interface conditions in each element. For triangular meshes, such broken linear plynomials coincide with the basis functions in immersed finite element methods [26]. We establish some approximation properties of the broken linear polynomials and the discrete weak gradient of a certain projection of the so…
In this paper we introduce and analyze the residual-based a posteriori error estimation of the partially penalized immersed finite element method for solving elliptic interface problems. The immersed finite element method can be naturally utilized on interface-unfitted meshes. Our a posteriori error estimate is proved to be both reliable and efficient with reliability constant independent of the location of the interface. Numerical results indicate that the efficiency constant is independent of the interface location and that the error estimation is robust with respect to the coefficient contr…
Internal interfaces in a domain could exist as a material defect or they can appear due to propagations of cracks. Discretization of such geometries and solution of the contact problem on the internal interfaces can be computationally challenging. We employ an unfitted Finite Element (FE) framework for the discretization of the domains and develop a tailored, globally convergent, and efficient multigrid method for solving contact problems on the internal interfaces. In the unfitted FE methods, structured background meshes are used and only the underlying finite element space has to be modified…
In this work, we analyze an unfitted discontinuous Galerkin discretization for the numerical solution of the Stokes system based on equal higher-order discontinuous velocities and pressures. This approach combines the best from both worlds, firstly the advantages of a piece-wise discontinuous high-order accurate approximation and secondly the advantages of an unfitted to the true geometry grid around possibly complex objects and/or geometrical deformations. Utilizing a fictitious domain framework, the physical domain of interest is embedded in an unfitted background mesh and the geometrically …
In this paper, we propose an unfitted Nitsche's method to compute the band structures of phononic crystal with impurities of general geometry. The proposed method does not require the background mesh to fit the interfaces of impurities, and thus avoids the expensive cost of generating body-fitted meshes and simplifies the inclusion of interface conditions in the formulation. The quasi-periodic boundary conditions are handled by the Floquet-Bloch transform, which converts the computation of band structures into an eigenvalue problem with periodic boundary conditions. More importantly, we show t…
We present an immersed boundary method to simulate the creeping motion of a rigid particle in a fluid described by the Stokes equations discretized thanks to a finite element strategy on unfitted meshes, called Phi-FEM, that uses the description of the solid with a level-set function. One of the advantages of our method is the use of standard finite element spaces and classical integration tools, while maintaining the optimal convergence (theoretically in the H1 norm for the velocity and L2 for pressure; numerically also in the L2 norm for the velocity).
In this paper, we develop and analyze a trilinear immersed finite element method for solving three-dimensional elliptic interface problems. The proposed method can be utilized on interface-unfitted meshes such as Cartesian grids consisting of cuboids. We establish the trace and inverse inequalities for trilinear IFE functions for interface elements with arbitrary interface-cutting configuration. Optimal a priori error estimates are rigorously proved in both energy and L2 norms. Numerical examples are provided not only to verify our theoretical results but also to demonstrate the applicability …
This review paper discusses the developments in immersed or unfitted finite element methods over the past decade. The main focus is the analysis and the treatment of the adverse effects of small cut elements. We distinguish between adverse effects regarding the stability and adverse effects regarding the conditioning of the system, and we present an overview of the developed remedies. In particular, we provide a detailed explanation of Schwarz preconditioning, element aggregation, and the ghost penalty formulation. Furthermore, we outline the methodologies developed for quadrature and weak enf…
In this work, we bridge standard adaptive mesh refinement and coarsening on scalable octree background meshes and robust unfitted finite element formulations for the automatic and efficient solution of large-scale nonlinear solid mechanics problems posed on complex geometries, as an alternative to standard body-fitted formulations, unstructured mesh generation and graph partitioning strategies. We pay special attention to those aspects requiring a specialized treatment in the extension of the unfitted h-adaptive aggregated finite element method on parallel tree-based adaptive meshes, recently …

In this paper, we propose a novel high order unfitted finite element method on Cartesian meshes for solving the acoustic wave equation with discontinuous coefficients having complex interface geometry. The unfitted finite element method does not require any penalty to achieve optimal convergence. We also introduce a new explicit time discretization method for the ODE system resulting from the spatial discretization of the wave equation. The strong stability and optimal $hp$-version error estimates both in time and space are established. Numerical examples confirm our theoretical results.
One of the major issues in the computational mechanics is to take into account the geometrical complexity. To overcome this difficulty and to avoid the expensive mesh generation, geometrically unfitted methods, i.e. the numerical methods using the simple computational meshes that do not fit the boundary of the domain, and/or the internal interfaces, have been widely developed. In the present work, we investigate the performances of an unfitted method called $ϕ$-FEM that converges optimally and uses classical finite element spaces so that it can be easily implemented using general FEM libraries…
In this work, we analyse the links between ghost penalty stabilisation and aggregation-based discrete extension operators for the numerical approximation of elliptic partial differential equations on unfitted meshes. We explore the behavior of ghost penalty methods in the limit as the penalty parameter goes to infinity, which returns a strong version of these methods. We observe that these methods suffer locking in that limit. On the contrary, aggregated finite element spaces are locking-free because they can be expressed as an extension operator from well-posed to ill-posed degrees of freedom…
This paper develops a computational framework with unfitted meshes to solve linear piezoelectricity and flexoelectricity electromechanical boundary value problems including strain gradient elasticity at infinitesimal strains. The high-order nature of the coupled PDE system is addressed by a sufficiently smooth hierarchical B-spline approximation on a background Cartesian mesh. The domain of interest is embedded into the background mesh and discretized in an unfitted fashion. The immersed boundary approach allows us to use B-splines on arbitrary domain shapes, regardless of their geometrical co…
This article presents an immersed virtual element method for solving a class of interface problems that combines the advantages of both body-fitted mesh methods and unfitted mesh methods. A background body-fitted mesh is generated initially. On those interface elements, virtual element spaces are constructed as solution spaces to local interface problems, and exact sequences can be established for these new spaces involving discontinuous coefficients. The discontinuous coefficients of interface problems are recast as Hodge star operators that are the key to project immersed virtual functions t…
In this work, we propose a novel formulation for the solution of partial differential equations using finite element methods on unfitted meshes. The proposed formulation relies on the discrete extension operator proposed in the aggregated finite element method. This formulation is robust with respect to the location of the boundary/interface within the cell. One can prove enhanced stability results, not only on the physical domain, but on the whole active mesh. However, the stability constants grow exponentially with the polynomial order being used, since the underlying extension operators are…
