We consider a collection of balls in Euclidean space and the problem of determining if Brownian motion has a positive probability of avoiding all the balls
We show that the uniform norm of generalized grey Brownian motion over the unit interval has an analytic density, excluding the special case of fractional Brownian motion. Our main result is an asymptotic expansion for the small ball probability of generalized grey Brownian motion, which extends to other norms on path space. The decay rate is not exponential but polynomial, of degree two. For the uniform norm and the Hölder norm, we also prove a large deviations estimate.
We present a duality relation between two systems of coalescing random walks and an analogous duality relation between two systems of coalescing Brownian motions. Our results extends previous work in the literature and we apply it to the study of a system of coalescing Brownian motions with Poisson immigration.
We study the total mass of a d-dimensional super-Brownian motion as it first exits an increasing sequence of balls. The process of the total mass is a time-inhomogeneous continuous-state branching process, where the increasing radii of the balls are taken as the time parameter. We are able to characterise its time-dependent branching mechanism and show that it converges, as time goes to infinity, towards the branching mechanism of the total mass of a one-dimensional super-Brownian motion as it first crosses above an increasing sequence of levels. Our results allow us to identify the compact su…
We study the density of the support of a dyadic $d$-dimensional branching Brownian motion (BBM) in subcritical balls in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Using elementary geometric arguments and an extension of a previous result on the probability of absence of the support of BBM in linearly moving balls of fixed size, we obtain sharp asymptotic results on the degree of density of the support of BBM in subcritical balls. As corollaries, we obtain almost sure results about the large-time behavior of $r(t)$-enlargement of the support of BBM when the shrinking radius $r(t)$ is decaying sufficiently slowly. As a by…
For a class of Laplace exponents we derive the heat trace asymptotics of the generator of the corresponding subordinate Brownian motion on Euclidean space. The terms in the asymptotic expansion are found to depend both on the geometry of Euclidean space and probabilistic properties of the subordinator. The key assumption is the existence of a suitable density for the Levy measure of the subordinator. An intermediate step is the computation of the zeta function of the generator. We employ methods from the theory of classical pseudodifferential operators on Euclidean space. The analysis is highl…
Let $\{X_t\}_{t\geq0}$ be a $d$-dimensional critical super-Brownian motion started from a Poisson random measure whose intensity is the Lebesgue measure. Denote by $R_t:=\sup\{u>0: X_t(\{x\in\mathbb{R}^d:|x|< u\})=0\}$ the radius of the largest empty ball centered at the origin of $X_t$. In this work, we prove that for $r>0$, $$\lim_{t\to\infty}\mathbb{P}\left(\frac{R_t}{t^{(1/d)\wedge(3-d)^+}}\geq r\right)=e^{-A_d(r)},$$ where $A_d(r)$ satisfies $\lim_{r\to\infty}\frac{A_d(r)}{r^{|d-2|+d\ind_{\{d=2\}}}}=C$ for some $C\in(0,\infty)$ depending only on $d$.
We study the problem of when a Brownian motion in the unit ball has a positive probability of avoiding a countable collection of spherical obstacles. We give a necessary and sufficient integral condition for such a collection to be avoidable.
We introduce an extension of the frog model to Euclidean space and prove properties for the spread of active particles. Fix $r>0$ and place a particle at each point $x$ of a unit intensity Poisson point process $\mathcal P \subseteq \mathbb R^d - \mathbb B(0,r)$. Around each point in $\mathcal{P}$, put a ball of radius $r$. A particle at the origin performs Brownian motion. When it hits the ball around $x$ for some $x \in \mathcal P$, new particles begin independent Brownian motions from the centers of the balls in the cluster containing $x$. Subsequent visits to the cluster do nothing. This w…
We compute the joint distribution of the site and the time at which a $d$-dimensional standard Brownian motion $B_t$ hits the surface of the ball $ U(a) =\{|{\bf x}|<a\}$ for the first time. The asymptotic form of its density is obtained when either the hitting time or the starting site $B_0$ becomes large. Our results entail that if Brownian motion is started at ${\bf x}$ and conditioned to hit $U(a)$ at time $t$ for the first time, the distribution of the hitting site approaches the uniform distribution or the point mass at $a{\bf x}/|{\bf x}|$ according as $|{\bf x}|/t$ tends to zero or inf…
We obtain new upper tail probabilities of $m$-times integrated Brownian motions under the uniform norm and the $L^p$ norm. For the uniform norm, Talagrand's approach is used, while for the $L^p$ norm, Zolotare's approach together with suitable metric entropy and the associated small ball probabilities are used. This proposed method leads to an interesting and concrete connection between small ball probabilities and upper tail probabilities (large ball probabilities) for general Gaussian random variable in Banach spaces. As applications, explicit bounds are given for the largest eigenvalue of t…
We derive the asymptotic behavior of the occupation measure of the unit ball, for super-Brownian motion started from the Dirac measure at a distant point x and conditioned to hit the unit ball. In the critical dimension d=4, we obtain a limiting exponential distribution for the ratio of the occupation measure over log(|x|).
We provide short-time asymptotics with rates of convergence for the Laplace Dirichlet heat kernel in a ball. The boundary behaviour is precisely described. Presented results may be considered as a complement or a generalization of the famous "principle of not feeling the boundary" in case of a ball.
Ball throwing on Euclidean spaces has been considered for a while. A suitable renormalization leads to a fractional Brownian motion as limit object. In this paper we investigate ball throwing on spheres. A different behavior is exhibited: we still get a Gaussian limit but which is no longer a fractional Brownian motion. However the limit is locally self-similar when the self-similarity index $H$ is less than 1/2.
In this paper, we investigate two-sided bounds for the small ball probability of a mixed fractional Brownian motion with a general deterministic trend function, in terms of respective small ball probability of a mixed fractional Brownian motion without trend. To maximize the lower bound, we consider various ways to split the trend function between the components of the mixed fractional Brownian motion for the application of Girsanov theorem, and we show that the optimal split is the solution of a Fredholm integral equation. We find that the upper bound for the probability is also a function of…
We study the local mass of a dyadic branching Brownian motion $Z$ evolving in $\mathbb{R}^d$. By 'local mass,' we refer to the number of particles of $Z$ that fall inside a ball with fixed radius and time-dependent center, lying in the 'subcritical' zone. Using the strong law of large numbers for the local mass of branching Brownian motion and elementary geometric arguments, we find large deviation results giving the asymptotic behavior of the probability that the local mass is atypically small on an exponential scale. As corollaries, we obtain an asymptotic result for the probability of absen…
This paper studies, by employing analytical tools, the small time behavior of the heat content for the Poisson kernel over the unit ball in $\Rd$, $d\geq 2$ by working with its related set covariance function. As a result, we obtain a representation for the third term in the expansion of the heat content over the unit ball and provide the explicit form of the this term in the particular cases $d=2$ and $d=3$.
A probabilistic representation for a class of weighted $p$-radial distributions, based on mixtures of a weighted cone probability measure and a weighted uniform distribution on the Euclidean $\ell_p^n$-ball, is derived. Large deviation principles for the empirical measure of the coordinates of random vectors on the $\ell_p^n$-ball with distribution from this weighted measure class are discussed. The class of $p$-radial distributions is extended to $p$-balls in classical matrix spaces, both for self-adjoint and non-self-adjoint matrices. The eigenvalue distribution of a self-adjoint random matr…
While there is extensive literature on approximation of convex bodies by inscribed or circumscribed polytopes, much less is known in the case of generally positioned polytopes. Here we give upper and lower bounds for approximation of convex bodies by arbitrarily positioned polytopes with a fixed number of vertices in the symmetric surface area deviation.
We consider stochastic flow on n-dimensional Euclidean space driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H greater than half, and study tangent flow and the growth of the Hausdorff measure of sub-manifolds of the ambient n-dimensional Euclidean space, as they evolve under the flow. The main result is a bound on the rate of (global) growth in terms of the (local) Holder norm of the flow.
We explore a generalisation of the Lévy fractional Brownian field on the Euclidean space based on replacing the Euclidean norm with another norm. A characterisation result for admissible norms yields a complete description of all self-similar Gaussian random fields with stationary increments. Several integral representations of the introduced random fields are derived. In a similar vein, several non-Euclidean variants of the fractional Poisson field are introduced and it is shown that they share the covariance structure with the fractional Brownian field and converge to it. The shape parameter…
Schreiber and Yukich [Ann. Probab. 36 (2008) 363-396] establish an asymptotic representation for random convex polytope geometry in the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^d, d\geq2$, in terms of the general theory of stabilizing functionals of Poisson point processes as well as in terms of generalized paraboloid growth processes. This paper further exploits this connection, introducing also a dual object termed the paraboloid hull process. Via these growth processes we establish local functional limit theorems for the properly scaled radius-vector and support functions of convex polytopes generated by high…
We consider a random variable expressed as the Euclidean distance between an arbitrary point and a random variable uniformly distributed in a closed and bounded set of a three-dimensional Euclidean space. Four cases are considered for this set: a union of disjoint disks, a union of disjoint balls, a union of disjoint line segments, and the boundary of a polyhedron. In the first three cases, we provide closed-form expressions of the cumulative distribution function and the density. In the last case, we propose an algorithm with complexity O(n ln n), n being the number of edges of the polyhedron…
We study properties of the random metric space called the Brownian map. For every h>0, we consider the connected components of the complement of the open ball of radius h centered at the root, and we let N(h,r) be the number of those connected components that intersect the complement of the ball of radius h+r. We then prove that r^3N(h,r) converges as r tends to 0 to a constant times the density at h of the profile of distances from the root. In terms of the Brownian cactus, this gives asymptotics for the number of vertices at height h that have descendants at height h+r. Our proofs are based …
In this paper, we discuss estimates of transition densities of subordinate Brownian motions in open subsets of Euclidean space. When $D$ is a $C^{1,1}$ domain, we establish sharp two-sided estimates for the transition densities of a large class of subordinate Brownian motions in $D$ whose scaling order is not necessarily strictly below $2$. Our estimates are explicit and written in terms of the dimension, the Euclidean distance between two points, the distance to the boundary and Laplace exponent of the corresponding subordinator only.
We show that a stochastic flow which is generated by a stochastic differential equation on $\R^d$ with bounded volatility has a random attractor provided that the drift component in the direction towards the origin is larger than a certain strictly positive constant $β$ outside a large ball. Using a similar approach, we provide a lower bound for the linear growth rate of the inner radius of the image of a large ball under a stochastic flow in case the drift component in the direction away from the origin is larger than a certain strictly positive constant $β$ outside a large ball. To prove the…
Applying an upper bound estimate for small $L^{2}$ ball probability for fractional Brownian motion (fBm), we prove the non-degeneracy of some Sobolev pseudo-norms of fBm.
Place an obstacle with probability $1-p$ independently at each vertex of $\mathbb Z^d$, and run a simple random walk until hitting one of the obstacles. For $d\geq 2$ and $p$ strictly above the critical threshold for site percolation, we condition on the environment where the origin is contained in an infinite connected component free of obstacles, and we show that for environments with probability tending to one as $n\to \infty$ there exists a unique discrete Euclidean ball of volume $d \log_{1/p} n$ asymptotically such that the following holds: conditioned on survival up to time $n$ we have …
We prove that there is an absolute constant $ C$ such that for every $ n \geq 2 $ and $ N\geq 10^n, $ there exists a polytope $ P_{n,N} \subset \mathbb{R}^n $ with at most $ N $ facets that satisfies $$Δ_{v}(D_n,P_{n,N}):=\text{vol}_n\left(D_n ΔP_{n,N}\right)\leq Cn^{-2/(n-1}\text{vol}_n\left(D_n\right)$$ and $$ Δ_{s}(D_n,P_{n,N}):=\text{vol}_{n-1}\left(\partial\left(D_n\cup P_{n,N}\right)\right) - \text{vol}_{n-1}\left(\partial\left(D_n\cap P_{n,N}\right)\right) \leq 4CN^{-\frac{2}{n-1}} \text{vol}_{n-1}\left(\partial D_n\right), $$ where $ D_n $ is the $ n$-dimensional Euclidean unit ball. A system of Brownian hard balls is regarded as a reflecting Brownian motion in the configuration space and can be represented by a solution to a Skorohod-type equation. In this article, we consider the case that there are an infinite number of balls, and the interaction between balls is given by the long-range pair interaction. We discuss the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the infinite-dimensional Skorohod equation.
Consider two unit balls in a $d$-dimensional flat torus with edge length $r$, for $d\geq 2$. The balls do not move by themselves but they are pushed by a Brownian motion. The balls never intersect---they reflect if they touch. It is proved that the joint distribution of the processes representing the centers of the balls converges to the distribution of two independent Brownian motions when $r\to \infty$, assuming that we use a proper clock and proper scaling. The diffusion coefficient of the limit process depends on the dimension. The positions of the balls are asymptotically independent also…
A small ball problem and Chung's law of iterated logarithm for a hypoelliptic Brownian motion in Heisenberg group are proven. In addition, bounds on the limit in Chung's law are established.
In a balls-in-bins process with feedback, balls are sequentially thrown into bins so that the probability that a bin with n balls obtains the next ball is proportional to f(n) for some function f. A commonly studied case where there are two bins and f(n) = n^p for p > 0, and our goal is to study the fine behavior of this process with two bins and a large initial number t of balls. Perhaps surprisingly, Brownian Motions are an essential part of both our proofs. For p>1/2, it was known that with probability 1 one of the bins will lead the process at all large enough times. We show that if the fi…
We derive a family of series representations of the multiparameter fractional Brownian motion in the centred ball of radius $R$ in the $N$-dimensional space $\mathbb{R}^N$. Some known examples of series representations are shown to be the members of the family under consideration.
Our purpose in this paper is to determine the limiting distribution and the evolution rate of particles near the frontier of branching Brownian motions. Here the branching rate is given by a Kato class measure with compact support in Euclidean space. Our investigation focuses on the two dimensional case.
We extend generalized isoperimetric-type inequalities to iterated Brownian motion over several domains in $\RR{R}^{n}$. These kinds of inequalities imply in particular that for domains of finite volume, the exit distribution and moments of the first exit time for iterated Brownian motion are maximized with the ball $D^{*}$ centered at the origin, which has the same volume as $D$
We define and study the windings along Brownian paths in the octonionic Euclidean, projective and hyperbolic spaces which are isometric to 8-dimensional Riemannian model spaces. In particular, the asymptotic laws of these windings are shown to be Gaussian for the flat and spherical geometries while the hyperbolic winding exhibits a different long time-behavior.
We determine the long time behavior and the exact order of the tail probability for the maximal displacement of a branching Brownian motion in Euclidean space in terms of the principal eigenvalue of the associated Schrödinger type operator. To establish our results, we show a sharp and locally uniform growth order of the Feynman-Kac semigroup.
In this article, we show that the Brownian motion on the circle constructed in Levy (1959) is a regular Euclidean Brownian motion on the half-circle with its own mirror image on the other half-circle, and is degenerated in the sense of Minlos (1959). This raises the question of what the white noise is on the circle. We then formally define the white noise space and its associated Brownian bridge.
We consider the Brownian interlacements model in Euclidean space, introduced by A.S. Sznitman in \cite{sznitman2013scaling}. We give estimates for the asymptotics of the visibility in the vacant set. We also consider visibility inside the vacant set of the Brownian excursion process in the unit disc and show that it undergoes a phase transition regarding visibility to infinity as in \cite{benjamini2009visibility}. Additionally, we determine the critical value and that there is no visibility to infinity at the critical intensity.
The main results in this paper concern large and moderate deviations for the radial component of a $n$-dimensional hyperbolic Brownian motion (for $n\geq 2$) on the Poincaré half-space. We also investigate the asymptotic behavior of the hitting probability $P_η(T_{η_1}^{(n)}<\infty)$ of a ball of radius $η_1$, as the distance $η$ of the starting point of the hyperbolic Brownian motion goes to infinity.
We establish a boundary Harnack principle for a large class of subordinate Brownian motion, including mixtures of symmetric stable processes, in bounded $κ$-fat open set (disconnected analogue of John domains). As an application of the boundary Harnack principle, we identify the Martin boundary and the minimal Martin boundary of bounded $κ$-fat open sets with respect to these processes with their Euclidean boundary.
Let $T_D$ denote the first exit time of a Brownian motion from a domain $D$ in ${\mathbb R}^n$. Given domains $U,W \subseteq {\mathbb R}^n$ containing the origin, we investigate the cases in which we are more likely to have fast exits from $U$ than $W$, meaning ${\bf P}(T_U<t) > {\bf P}(T_W<t)$ for $t$ small. We show that the primary factor in the probability of fast exits from domains is the proximity of the closest regular part of the boundary to the origin. We also prove a result on the complementary question of longs stays, meaning ${\bf P}(T_U>t) > {\bf P}(T_W>t)$ for $t$ large. This resu…
We study avoidability of collections of balls in bounded $C^{1,1}$ opens sets for censored $α$-stable processes, $α\in (1,2)$. The results are analog to the ones obtained for Brownian motion in S. J. Gardiner, M. Ghergu, Champagne subregions of the unit ball with unavoidable bubbles, Ann. Acad. Sci. Fenn. Math. 35 (2010) 321-329. On the way we derive a Wiener-Aikawa-type criterion for minimal thinness with respect to the censored stable processes.
In this article we obtain a skew-product decomposition of a Brownian motion on an ellipsoid of dimension $n$ in a Euclidean space of dimension $n+1$. We only consider such ellipsoid whose restriction to first $n$ dimensions is a sphere and its last coordinate depends on a variable parameter. We prove that the projection of this Brownian motion on to the last coordinate is, after a suitable transformation, a Wright-Fisher diffusion process with atypical selection coefficient.
The $γ$-stable trees are random measured compact metric spaces that appear as the scaling limit of Galton-Watson trees whose offspring distribution lies in a $γ$-stable domain, $γ\in (1, 2]$. They form a specific class of Lévy trees (introduced by Le Gall and Le Jan in1998) and the Brownian case $γ= 2$ corresponds to Aldous Continuum Random Tree (CRT). In this paper, we study fine properties of the mass measure, that is the natural measure on $γ$-stable trees. We first discuss the minimum of the mass measure of balls with radius $r$ and we show that this quantity is of order $r^{\fracγ{γ-1}} (…
How long does a diffusing molecule spend in a close vicinity of a confining boundary or a catalytic surface? This quantity is determined by the boundary local time, which plays thus a crucial role in the description of various surface-mediated phenomena such as heterogeneous catalysis, permeation through semi-permeable membranes, or surface relaxation in nuclear magnetic resonance. In this paper, we obtain the probability distribution of the boundary local time in terms of the spectral properties of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator. We investigate the short-time and long-time asymptotic behav…
