The following integrability theorem for vertex operator algebras V satisfying some finiteness conditions(C_2-cofinite and CFT-type) is proved: the vertex operator subalgebra generated by a simple Lie subalgebra {\frak g} of the weight one subspace V_1 is isomorphic to the irreducible highest weight \hat{\frak g}-module L(k, 0) for a positive integer k, and V is an integrable \hat{\frak g}-module. The case in which {\frak g} is replaced by an abelian Lie subalgebra is also considered, and several consequences of integrability are discussed.
We determine Zhu's algebra and C_2-algebra of parafermion vertex operator algebras for sl_2. Moreover, we prove the C_2-cofiniteness of parafermion vertex operator algebras for any finite dimensional simple Lie algebras.
We show that a finitely strongly generated, non-negatively graded vertex algebra $V$ is $C_2$-cofinite if and only if it is lisse in the sense of Beilinson, Feigin and Mazur. This shows that the $C_2$-cofiniteness is indeed a natural finiteness condition.
For a C1-cofinite vertex algebra V, we give an efficient way to calculate Zhu's algebra A(V) of V with respect to its C1-generators and relations. We use two examples to explain how this method works.
In this article, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for the $C_2$-cofiniteness of the 2-cycle permutation orbifold model $(V\otimes V)^σ$ for a $C_2$-cofinite vertex operator algebra and the 2-cycle permutation $σ$ of $V\otimes V$. As an application, we show that the 2-cycle permutation orbifold model of the simple Virasoro vertex operator algebra $L(c,0)$ of minimal central charge $c$ is $C_2$-cofinite.
It is proved that the regularity of parafermion vertex operator algebras associated to integrable highest weight modules for affine Kac-Moody algebra A_1^{(1)} implies the C_2-cofiniteness of parafermion vertex operator algebras associated to integrable highest weight modules for any affine Kac-Moody algebra. In particular, the parafermion vertex operator algebra associated to an integrable highest weight module of small level for any affine Kac-Moody algebra is C_2-cofinite and has only finitely many irreducible modules. Also, the parafermion vertex operator algebras with level 1 are determin…
Let V be a vertex operator algebra. We prove that if U and W are C_1-cofinite {\mathbb N}-gradable V-modules, then a fusion product U\boxtimes W is well-defined and also a C_1-cofinite {\mathbb N}-gradable V-module, where the fusion product is defined by (logarithmic) intertwining operators. This is also true for C_2-cofinite {\mathbb N}-gradable modules.
It was shown by Abe, Buhl and Dong that the vertex algebra $V_L^+$ and its irreducible weak modules satisfy the $C_2$-cofiniteness condition when $L$ is a positive definite even lattice. In this paper, we extend their results by showing that the vertex algebra $V_L^+$ and its irreducible weak modules are $C_2$-cofinite when $L$ is a negative definite even lattice and when $L$ is a non-degenerate even lattice that is neither negative definite nor positive definite.
We demonstrate that, for CFT vertex operator algebras, C_2-cofiniteness and rationality is equivalent to regularity. In addition, we show that, for C_2-cofinite vertex operators algebras, irreducible weak modules are ordinary modules and C_2-cofinite, and V_L^+ are C_2-cofinite.
In this paper, we investigate the Lie algebra structures of weight one subspaces of $C_2$-cofinite vertex operator superalgebras. We also show that for any positive integer $k$, vertex operator superalgebras $L_{sl(1|n+1)}(k,0)$ and $L_{osp(2|2n)}(k,0)$ have infinitely many irreducible admissible modules. As a consequence, we give a proof of the fact that $L_{\mathfrak g}(k,0)$ is $C_2$-cofinite if and only if $\mathfrak g$ is either a simple Lie algebra, or $\mathfrak g=osp(1|2n)$, and $k$ is a nonnegative integer. As an application, we show that $L_{G(3)}(1,0)$ is a vertex operator superalge…
We show that C_2-cofiniteness is enough to prove a modular invariance property of vertex operator algebras without assuming the semisimplicity of Zhu algebra. For example, if a VOA V=\oplus_{m=0}^{\infty}V_m is C_2-cofinite, then the space spanned by generalized characters of V-modules is invariant under the action of SL_2(\Z). In this case, the central charge and conformal weights are all rational numbers. Namely, a VOA satisfying C_2-cofiniteness is a rational conformal field theory in a sense. We also show that C_2-cofiniteness is equivalent to the condition that every weak module is an \N-…
Let L be a rank one positive definite even lattice. We prove that a vertex operator algebra (VOA) V_L^+ satisfies the C_2 condition. Here, V_L^+ is a fixed point sub-VOA of the VOA V_L associated with the automorphism lifted from the -1 isometry of L.
In this article, we consider permutation orbifold models of $C_2$-cofinite vertex operator algebras of CFT type. We show the $C_2$-cofiniteness of the 2-cyclic permutation orbifold model $(V\otimes V)^{S_2}$ for an arbitrary $C_2$-cofinite simple vertex operator algebra $V$ of CFT type. We also give a proof of the $C_2$-cofiniteness of a $\Z_2$-orbifold model $V_L^+$ of the lattice vertex operator algebra $V_L$ associated with a rank one positive definite even lattice $L$ by using our result and the $C_2$-cofiniteness of $V_L$.
We discuss our recent results on the representation theory of $\mathcal{W}$--algebras relevant to Logarithmic Conformal Field Theory. First we explain some general constructions of $\mathcal{W}$-algebras coming from screening operators. Then we review the results on $C_2$--cofiniteness, the structure of Zhu's algebras, and the existence of logarithmic modules for triplet vertex algebras. We propose some conjectures and open problems which put the theory of triplet vertex algebras into a broader context. New realizations of logarithmic modules for $\mathcal{W}$-algebras defined via screenings a…
In this paper, it is shown that the diagonal coset vertex operator algebra $C(L_{\mathfrak{g}}(k+2,0),L_{\mathfrak{g}}(k,0)\otimes L_{\mathfrak{g}}(2,0))$ is rational and $C_2$-cofinite in case $\mathfrak{g}=so(2n), n\geq 3$ and $k$ is an admissible number for $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}$. It is also shown that the diagonal coset vertex operator algebra $C(L_{sl_2}(k+4,0),L_{sl_2}(k,0)\otimes L_{sl_2}(4,0))$ is rational and $C_2$-cofinite in case $k$ is an admissible number for $\hat{sl_2}$. Furthermore, irreducible modules of $C(L_{sl_2}(k+4,0),L_{sl_2}(k,0)\otimes L_{sl_2}(4,0))$ are classified in c…
We reformed the tensor product theory of vertex operator algebras developed by Huang and Lepowsky so that we could apply it to all vertex operator algebras satisfying C_2-cofiniteness. We also showed that the tensor product theory develops naturally if we include not only ordinary modules, but also weak modules with a composition series of finite length (we call it an Artin module). In particular, we don't assume the semisimplicity of the weight operator L(0). Actually, without the assumption of rationality, a C_2-cofiniteness on V is enough to obtain the existence of a tensor product of two A…
This paper is about the orbifold theory for vertex operator superalgebras. Given a vertex operator superalgebra V and a finite automorphism group G of V, we show that the trace functions associated to the twisted sectors are holomorphic in the upper half plane for any commuting pairs in G under the C_2-cofinite condition. We also establish that these functions afford a representation of the full modular group if V is C_2-cofinite and g-rational for any g in G.

In vertex operator algebra theories, most of the general theorems are proved under the assumptions of rationality and C_2-cofiniteness. In this paper, we obtain several general theorems without the assumption of rationality so that we can use them for proving rationality of given C_2-cofinite vertex operator algebras. For example, we apply them to orbifold models and show that if g is a finite automorphism of a rational C_2-cofinite vertex operator algebra T of CFT-type with T'\cong T and a fixed point subVOA T^g is C_2-cofinite, then T^g is also rational.
The rational and C_2-cofinite simple vertex operator algebras whose effective central charges and the central charges c are equal and less than 1 are classified. Such a vertex operator algebra is zero if c<0 and C if c=0. If c>0, it is an extension of discrete Virasoro vertex operator algebra L(c_{p,q},0) by its irreducible modules. It is also proved that for any rational and C_2-cofinite simple vertex operator algebra whose effective central charge and central charge are equal, the vertex operator subalgebra generated by the Virasoro vector is simple.
We prove an orbifold conjecture for a solvable automorphism group. Namely, we show that if V is a C_2-cofinite simple vertex operator algebra and G is a finite solvable automorphism group of V, then the fixed point vertex operator subalgebra V^G is also C_2-cofinite. This offers a mathematically rigorous background to orbifold theories of finite type with solvable automorphism groups.
We study properties of a C_2-cofinite vertex operator algebra of CFT type. If it is also rational and V'\cong V, then the rigidity of the tensor category of modules has been proved by Huang. When we treat an irrational C_2-cofinite VOA, the rigidity is too strong, because it is almost equivalent to be rational as we see. We introduce a natural weaker condition "semi-rigidity". Under this condition, we prove the following results. For a projective cover P of a V-module V and a finitely generated V-module M, the projective cover of M is a direct summand of the tensor product P\boxtimes M defined…
We prove that if $V$ is a $C_2$-cofinite simple vertex operator algebra of CFT-type with a nonsingular invariant bilinear form and its an automorphism group $G$ is finite, then an orbifold model $V^G$ is also $C_2$-cofinite.
Let V be a simple C_2-cofinite VOA of CFT-type and we assume that there is a simple module U such that \Hom_V(U\boxtimes V',V)\not=0 where V' is a restricted dual of V. As the author has shown, an S-transformation S(Ψ_V) of a trace function Ψ_V on V corresponding \begin{pmatrix}0&-1\cr 1&0\end{pmatrix} may contain pseudo-trace functions. Our assumption in this paper is that no pseudo-trace functions appear in S(Ψ_V). Under these assumptions, we prove that every V-module W is semirigid and Ψ_W appears in S(Ψ_V). As a corollary of our main theorem, a fixed point subVOA of a rational VOA of CFT-t…
We prove the existence and associativity of the nonmeromorphic operator product expansion for an infinite family of vertex operator algebras, the triplet W-algebras, using results from P(z)-tensor product theory. While doing this, we also show that all these vertex operator algebras are C_2-cofinite.
To every vertex algebra $V$ we associate a canonical decreasing sequence of subspaces and prove that the associated graded vector space $gr(V)$ is naturally a vertex Poisson algebra, in particular a commutative vertex algebra. We establish a relation between this sequence and the sequence $C_{n}$ introduced by Zhu. By using the (classical) algebra $gr(V)$, we prove that for any vertex algebra $V$, $C_{2}$-cofiniteness implies $C_{n}$-cofiniteness for all $n\ge 2$. We further use $gr(V)$ to study generating subspaces of certain types for lower truncated $Z$-graded vertex algebras.
The rationality and C_2-cofiniteness of the orbifold vertex operator algebra V_{L_{2}}^{A_{4}} are established and all the irreducible modules are constructed and classified. This is part of classification of rational vertex operator algebras with c=1.
We construct an irrational C_2-cofinite vertex operator algebra associatted to a finite dimensional vector space with a nondegenerate skew-symmetric bilinear form. We also classify its equivalence classes of irreducible modules and determine its automorphism group.
It is shown that any simple, rational and C_2-cofinite vertex operator algebra whose weight 1 subspace is zero, the dimension of weight 2 subspace is greater than or equal to 2 and with central charge c=1, is isomorphic to L(1/2,0)\otimes L(1/2,0).
It is proved that if any Z-graded weak module for vertex operator algebra V is completely reducible, then V is rational and C_2-cofinite. That is, V is regular. This gives a natural characterization of regular vertex operator algebras.
$C_2$ cofiniteness and rationality of $V_{L_2}^{S_4}$ are obtained, and irreducible $V_{L_2}^{S_4}$-modules are classified. With the assumption of rationality and $C_2$ cofiniteness, irreducible $V_{L_2}^{A_5}$-modules are determined. Also, quantum dimensions of these irreducible modules are calculated.
We prove an associative law of the fusion products $\boxtimes$ of $C_1$-cofinite ${\mathbb N}$-gradable modules for a vertex operator algebra $V$. To be more precise, for $C_1$-cofinite ${\mathbb N}$-gradable $V$-modules $A,B,C$ and their fusion products $(A\!\boxtimes\! B, {\cal Y}^{AB})$, $((A\!\boxtimes\! B)\!\boxtimes\! C, {\cal Y}^{(AB)C})$, $(B\!\boxtimes\! C, {\cal Y}^{BC})$, $(A\!\boxtimes\! (B\!\boxtimes\! C),{\cal Y}^{A(BC)})$ with logarithmic intertwining operators ${\cal Y}^{AB},\ldots,{\cal Y}^{A(BC)}$ satisfying the universal properties for ${\mathbb N}$-gradable modules, we prov…
Let $V$ be a simple vertex operator algebra containing a rank $n$ Heisenberg vertex algebra $H$ and let $C=\text{Com}\left( {H}, {V}\right)$ be the coset of ${H}$ in ${V}$. Assuming that the representation categories of interest are vertex tensor categories in the sense of Huang, Lepowsky and Zhang, a Schur-Weyl type duality for both simple and indecomposable but reducible modules is proven. Families of vertex algebra extensions of ${C}$ are found and every simple ${C}$-module is shown to be contained in at least one ${V}$-module. A corollary of this is that if ${V}$ is rational and $C_2$-cofi…
We study the properties of shifted vertex operator algebras, which are vertex algebras derived from a given theory by shifting the conformal vector. In this way, we are able to exhibit large numbers of vertex operator algebras which are regular(rational and C_2-cofinite) and yet are pathological in one way or another.
In this paper the W-algebra W(2,2) and its representation theory are studied. It is proved that a simple vertex operator algebra generated by two weight 2 vectors is either a vertex operator algebra associated to a highest irreducible W(2,2)-module or a tensor product of two irreducible Virasoro vertex operator algebras. Furthermore, any rational, C_2-cofinite simple vertex operator algebra whose weight 1 subspace is zero and weight 2 subspace is 2-dimensional, and with central charge c=1 is isomorphic to L(1/2,0)\otimes L(1/2,0).
We study modularity of the characters of a vertex (super)algebra equipped with a family of conformal structures. Along the way we introduce the notions of rationality and cofiniteness relative to such a family. We apply the results to determine modular transformations of trace functions on admissible modules over affine Kac-Moody algebras and, via BRST reduction, trace functions on minimal series representations of principal affine W-algebras.
The rank 1 bosonic ghost vertex algebra, also known as the $βγ$ ghosts, symplectic bosons or Weyl vertex algebra, is a simple example of a conformal field theory which is neither rational, nor $C_2$-cofinite. We identify a module category, denoted category $\mathscr{F}$, which satisfies three necessary conditions coming from conformal field theory considerations: closure under restricted duals, closure under fusion and closure under the action of the modular group on characters. We prove the second of these conditions, with the other two already being known. Further, we show that category $\ma…
We study the trace functions in orbiford theory for Z-graded vertex operator superalgebras and obtain a modular invariance result. More precisely, let V be a C_2-cofinite Z-graded vertex operator superalgebra and G a finite automorphism group of V. Then for any commuting pairs (g,h) in G, the hσ-trace functions associated to the simple g-twisted V-modules are holomorphic in the upper half plane where σis the canonical involution on V coming from the superspace structure of V. If V is further g-rational for every g n G, the trace unctions afford a representation for the full modular group SL(2,…
We first investigate the algebraic structure of vertex algebroids $B$ when $B$ are simple Leibniz algebras. Next, we use these vertex algebroids $B$ to construct indecomposable non-simple $C_2$-cofinite $\mathbb{N}$-graded vertex algebras $\overline{V_B}$. In addition, we classify $\mathbb{N}$-graded irreducible $\overline{V_B}$-modules and examine conformal vectors of these $\mathbb{N}$-graded vertex algebras $\overline{V_B}$.
In this paper, under the assumption that the diagonal coset vertex operator algebra $C(L_{\mathfrak g}(k+l,0),L_{\mathfrak g}(k,0)\otimes L_{\mathfrak g}(l,0))$ is rational and $C_2$-cofinite, the global dimension of $C(L_{\mathfrak g}(k+l,0),L_{\mathfrak g}(k,0)\otimes L_{\mathfrak g}(l,0))$ is obtained, the quantum dimensions of multiplicity spaces viewed as $C(L_{\mathfrak g}(k+l,0),L_{\mathfrak g}(k,0)\otimes L_{\mathfrak g}(l,0))$-modules are also obtained. As an application, a method to classify irreducible modules of $C(L_{\mathfrak g}(k+l,0),L_{\mathfrak g}(k,0)\otimes L_{\mathfrak g}(…
Suppose $V^G$ is the fixed-point vertex operator subalgebra of a compact group $G$ acting on a simple abelian intertwining algebra $V$. We show that if all irreducible $V^G$-modules contained in $V$ live in some braided tensor category of $V^G$-modules, then they generate a tensor subcategory equivalent to the category $\mathrm{Rep}\,G$ of finite-dimensional representations of $G$, with associativity and braiding isomorphisms modified by the abelian $3$-cocycle defining the abelian intertwining algebra structure on $V$. Additionally, we show that if the fusion rules for the irreducible $V^G$-m…
In this paper, we study Virasoro vertex algebras and affine vertex algebras over a general field of characteristic $p>2$. More specifically, we study certain quotients of the universal Virasoro and affine vertex algebras by ideals related to the $p$-centers of the Virasoro algebra and affine Lie algebras. Among the main results, we classify their irreducible $\mathbb{N}$-graded modules by explicitly determining their Zhu algebras and show that these vertex algebras have only finitely many irreducible $\mathbb{N}$-graded modules and they are $C_2$-cofinite.
We study the subalgebra of the lattice vertex operator algebra $V_{\sqrt{2}A_2}$ consisting of the fixed points of an automorphism which is induced from an order 3 isometry of the root lattice $A_2$. We classify the simple modules for the subalgebra. The rationality and the $C_2$-cofiniteness are also established.
The Bershadsky-Polyakov algebra is the $\mathcal{W}$-algebra associated to $\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}_3$ with its minimal nilpotent element $f_θ$. For notational convenience we define $\mathcal{W}^{\ell} = \mathcal{W}^{\ell - 3/2} (\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}_3, f_θ)$. The simple quotient of $\mathcal{W}^{\ell}$ is denoted by $\mathcal{W}_{\ell}$, and for $\ell$ a positive integer, $\mathcal{W}_{\ell}$ is known to be $C_2$-cofinite and rational. We prove that for all positive integers $\ell$, $\mathcal{W}_{\ell}$ contains a rank one lattice vertex algebra $V_L$, and that the coset $\mathcal{C}_{\e…
Let $A$ be a finite dimensional unital commutative associative algebra and let $B$ be a finite dimensional vertex $A$-algebroid such that its Levi factor is isomorphic to $sl_2$. Under suitable conditions, we construct an indecomposable non-simple $\mathbb{N}$-graded vertex algebra $\overline{V_B}$ from the $\mathbb{N}$-graded vertex algebra $V_B$ associated with the vertex $A$-algebroid $B$. We show that this indecomposable non-simple $\mathbb{N}$-graded vertex algebra $\overline{V_B}$ is $C_2$-cofinite and has only two irreducible modules.
Given a holomorphic $C_2$-cofinite vertex operator algebra $V$ with graded dimension $j-744$, Borcherds's proof of the monstrous moonshine conjecture implies any finite order automorphism of $V$ has graded trace given by a "completely replicable function", and by work of Cummins and Gannon, these functions are principal moduli of genus zero modular groups. The action of the monster simple group on the monster vertex operator algebra produces 171 such functions, known as the monstrous moonshine functions. We show that 154 of the 157 non-monstrous completely replicable functions cannot possibly …
Moonshine relates three fundamental mathematical objects: the Monster sporadic simple group, the modular function j, and the moonshine module vertex operator algebra. Examining the relationship between modular functions and the representation theory of vertex operator algebras reveals rich structure. In particular, C2-cofiniteness (also called Zhu's finiteness condition) implies the existence of finite generating sets and Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt-like spanning sets for vertex operator algebras and their modules. These spanning sets feature desirable ordering restrictions, e.g., a difference-one …
We study the fixed point subalgebra of a certain class of lattice vertex operator algebras by an automorphism of order 3, which is a lift of a fixed-point-free isometry of the underlying lattice. We classify the irreducible modules for the subalgebra. Moreover, the rationality and the $C_2$-cofiniteness of the subalgebra are established. Our result contains the case of the vertex operator algebra associated with the Leech lattice.
