We present the first example of a hyperbolic outer billiard. More precisely we construct a one parameter family of examples which in some sense correspond to the Bunimovich billiards.
It is shown that the set of 4-period orbits in outer billiard with piecewise smooth convex boundary has an empty interior, provided that no four corners of the boundary form a parallelogram.
The connected configuration space of a so called cylindric billiard system is a flat torus minus finitely many spherical cylinders. The dynamical system describes the uniform motion of a point particle in this configuration space with specular reflections at the boundaries of the removed cylinders. It is proven here that under a certain geometric condition --- slightly stronger than the necessary condition presented in [S-Sz(1998)] --- a cylindric billiard flow is completely hyperbolic. As a consequence, every hard ball system is completely hyperbolic --- a result strengthening the theorem of …
The standard Wojtkowski-Markarian-Donnay-Bunimovich technique for the hyperbolicity of focusing or mixed billiards in the plane requires the diameter of a billiard table to be of the same order as the largest ray of curvature along the focusing boundary. This is due to the physical principle that is used in the proofs, the so-called defocusing mechanism of geometrical optics. In this paper we construct examples of hyperbolic billiards with a focusing boundary component of arbitrarily small curvature whose diameter is bounded by a constant independent of that curvature. Our proof employs a nons…
The existence of an aperiodic orbit for an outer billiard outside a regular octagon is proved. Additionally, almost all orbits of such an outer billiard are proved to be periodic. All possible periods are explicitly listed.
In the class of projective billiards, which contains the usual billiards, we exhibit counter-examples to Ivrii's conjecture, which states that in any planar billiard with smooth boundary the set of periodic orbits has zero measure. The counter-examples are polygons admitting a $2$-parameters family of $n$-periodic orbits, with $n$ being either $3$ or any even number grower than $4$.
We study dissipative polygonal outer billiards, i.e. outer billiards about convex polygons with a contractive reflection law. We prove that dissipative outer billiards about any triangle and the square are asymptotically periodic, i.e. they have finitely many global attracting periodic orbits. A complete description of the bifurcations of the periodic orbits as the contraction rates vary is given. For the square billiard, we also show that the asymptotic periodic behavior is robust under small perturbations of the vertices and the contraction rates. Finally, we describe some numerical experime…
In this note we establish the existence of a (n+1)-periodic billiard trajectory inside an n-dimensional regular simplex in the hyperbolic space, which hits the interior of every facet exactly once.
In this paper we establish a kind of bijection between the orbits of a polygonal outer billiards system and the orbits of a related (and simpler to analyze) system called the pinwheel map. One consequence of the result is that the outer billiards system has unbounded orbits if and only if the pinwheel map has unbounded orbits. As the pinwheel map is much easier to analyze directly, we think that this bijection will be helpful in attacking some of the main questions about polyonal outer billiards.

This paper deals with Hopf type rigidity for convex billiards on surfaces of constant curvature. We prove that the only convex billiard without conjugate points on the Hyperbolic plane or on the Hemisphere is circular billiard.
In this paper, we discuss rotation number on the invariant curve of a one parameter family of outer billiard tables. Given a convex polygon $η$, we can construct an outer billiard table $T$ by cutting out a fixed area from the interior of $η$. $T$ is piece-wise hyperbolic and the polygon $η$ is an invariant curve of $T$ under the billiard map $ϕ$. We will show that, if $β$ is a periodic point under the outer billiard map with rational rotation number $τ= p / q$, then the $n$th iteration of the billiard map is not the local identity at $β$. This proves that the rotation number $τ$ as a function…
It is well-known that billiards in polygons cannot be chaotic (hyperbolic). Particularly Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of any polygonal billiard is zero. We consider physical polygonal billiards where a moving particle is a hard disc rather than a point (mathematical) particle and show that typical physical polygonal billiard is hyperbolic at least on a subset of positive measure and therefore has a positive Kolmogorov- Sinai entropy for any positive radius of the moving particle (provided that the particle is not so big that it cannot move within a polygon). This happens because a typical physical…
In this paper, outer billiards outside regular octagon are studied in details. We described all periodic points and their periods; also, we proved that the periodic points form a set of full measure outside the octagon and found an aperiodic point.
We show that for almost every $(P,λ)$ where $P$ is a convex polygon and $λ\in(0,1)$, the corresponding outer billiard about $P$ with contraction $λ$ is asymptotically periodic, i.e., has a finite number of periodic orbits and every orbit is attracted to one of them.
Following a recent paper by Baryshnikov and Zharnitskii, we consider outer billiards in the plane possessing invariant curves consisting of periodic orbits. We prove the existence and abundance of such tables using tools from sub-Riemannian geometry. We also prove that the set of 3-periodic outer billiard orbits has zero measure.
In this paper we present new results regarding the periodicity of outer billiards in the hyperbolic plane around polygonal tables which are tiles in regular two-piece tilings of the hyperbolic plane.
We study outer billiards with contraction outside regular polygons. For regular $n$-gons with $n = 3, 4, 5, 6, 8$, and $12$, we show that as the contraction rate approaches $1$, dynamics of the system converges, in a certain sense, to that of the usual outer billiards map. These are precisely the values of $n \geq 3$ with $[\mathbb{Q}(e^{2πi/n}):\mathbb{Q}] \leq 2$. Then we discuss how such convergence may fail in the case of $n=7$.
We give a simple proof of our previous result with V. Zharnitsky that the set of period 4 orbits in planar outer billiard with piecewise smooth convex boundary has empty interior, provided that no four corners of the boundary form a parallelogram. We also obtain results on period 5 and 6 orbits.
Closed billiard trajectories in a polygon in the hyperbolic plane can be coded by the order in which they hit the sides of the polygon. In this paper, we consider the average length of cyclically related closed billiard trajectories in ideal hyperbolic polygons and prove the conjecture that this average length is minimized for regular hyperbolic polygons. The proof uses a strict convexity property of the geodesic length function in Teichmüller space with respect to the Weil-Petersson metric, a fundamental result established by Wolpert.
In this paper outer, or dual, billiards outside regular polygons are studied; in particular, periodic points for cases of strictly convex "tables" and for regular n-gons with n = 3,4,6,8,12 are discussed. The main results of the paper are: 1) proof of an existence of aperiodic points for outer billiards outside regular octagon and dodecagon; 2) proof of the fact that for regular octagon, set of periodic points is of full measure; 3) list of all possible periods for case of regular octagon.
Outer billiards is a simple dynamical system based on a convex planar shape. The Moser-Neumann question, first posed by B.H. Neumann around 1960, asks if there exists a planar shape for which outer billiards has an unbounded orbit. The first half of this monograph proves that outer billiards has an unbounded orbit defined relative to any irrational kite. The second half of the monograph gives a very sharp description of the set of unbounded orbits, both in terms of the dynamics and the Hausdorff dimension. The analysis in both halves reveals a close connection between outer billiards on kites …
We study polygonal billiards with reflection laws contracting the reflected angle towards the normal. It is shown that if a polygon does not have parallel sides facing each other, then the corresponding billiard map has finitely many ergodic SRB measures whose basins cover a set of full Lebesgue measure.
The theory of planar hyperbolic billiards is already quite well developed by having also achieved spectacular successes. In addition there also exists an excellent monograph by Chernov and Markarian on the topic. In contrast, apart from a series of works culminating in Simányi's remarkable result on the ergodicity of hard ball systems and other sporadic successes, the theory of hyperbolic billiards in dimension 3 or more is much less understood. The goal of this work is to survey the key results of their theory and highlight some central problems which deserve particular attention and efforts.
An existence of an aperiodic point for outer billiard outside regular dodecagon is proved. Additionally, almost all orbits of such an outer billiard are proved to be periodic, and all possible periods are listed explicitly. The proof is based on facts established with computer program implemented by author. All calculations of a program has been made with absolute accuracy; these calculations can be done "by hands" but it this case, amount of calculations would be too large.
We study billiards on polytopes in $\Rr^d$ with contracting reflection laws, i.e. non-standard reflection laws that contract the reflection angle towards the normal. We prove that billiards on generic polytopes are uniformly hyperbolic provided there exists a positive integer $k$ such that for any $k$ consecutive collisions, the corresponding normals of the faces of the polytope where the collisions took place generate $\Rr^d$. As an application of our main result we prove that billiards on generic polytopes are uniformly hyperbolic if either the contracting reflection law is sufficiently clos…
We prove that polygonal billiards with contracting reflection laws exhibit hyperbolic attractors with countably many ergodic SRB measures. These measures are robust under small perturbations of the reflection law, and the tables for which they exist form a generic set in the space of all polygons. Specific polygonal tables are studied in detail.
We consider outer billiard outside regular convex polygons. We deal with the case of regular polygons with $\{3,4,5,6,10\}$ sides, and we describe the symbolic dynamics of the map and compute the complexity of the language.
Outer billiards is a basic dynamical system, defined relative to a planar convex shape. This system was introduced in the 1950's by B.H. Neumann and later popularized in the 1970's by J. Moser. All along, one of the central questions has been: is there an outer billiards system with an unbounded orbit. We answer this question by proving that outer billiards defined relative to the Penrose Kite has an unbounded orbit. The Penrose kite is the quadrilateral that appears in the famous Penrose tiling. We also analyze some of the finer orbit structure of outer billiards on the penrose kite. This ana…
We give a beautiful explicit example of a convex plane curve such that the outer billiard has a given finite number of invariant curves. Moreover, the dynamics on these curves is a standard shift. This example can be considered as an outer analog of the so-called Gutkin billiard tables. We test total integrability of these billiards, in the region between the two invariant curves. Next, we provide computer simulations on the dynamics in this region. At first glance, the dynamics looks regular but by magnifying the picture we see components of chaotic behavior near the hyperbolic periodic orbit…
\textsc{J. Hadamard} studied the geometric properties of geodesic flows on surfaces of negative curvature, thus initiating "Symbolic Dynamics". In this article, we follow the same geometric approach to study the geodesic trajectories of billiards in "rational polygons" on the hyperbolic plane. We particularly show that the billiard dynamics resulting thus are just 'Subshifts of Finite Type' or their dense subsets. We further show that 'Subshifts of Finite Type' play a central role in subshift dynamics and while discussing the topological structure of the space of all subshifts, we demonstrate …
We consider a convex curve $γ$ lying on the Sphere or Hyperbolic plane. We study the problem of existence of polynomial in velocities integrals for Birkhoff billiard inside the domain bounded by $γ$. We extend the result by S. Bolotin (1992) and get new obstructions on polynomial integrability in terms of the dual curve $Γ$. We follow a method which was introduced by S. Tabachnikov for Outer billiards in the plane and was applied later on in our recent paper to Birkhoff billiards with the help of a new the so called Angular billiard.
Gouezel and Sarig introduced operator renewal theory as a method to prove sharp results on polynomial decay of correlations for certain classes of nonuniformly expanding maps. In this paper, we apply the method to planar dispersing billiards and multidimensional nonMarkovian intermittent maps.
A negatively curved hyperbolic cone metric is called rigid if it is determined (up to isotopy) by the support of its Liouville current, and flexible otherwise. We provide a complete characterization of rigidity and flexibility, prove that rigidity is a generic property, and parameterize the associated deformation space for any flexible metric. As an application, we parameterize the space of hyperbolic polygons with the same symbolic coding for their billiard dynamics, and prove that generically this parameter space is a point.
We consider polygonal billiards with collisions contracting the reflection angle towards the normal to the boundary of the table. In previous work, we proved that such billiards has a finite number of ergodic SRB measures supported on hyperbolic generalized attractors. Here we study the relation of these measures with the ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability measures (acips) of the slap map, the 1-dimensional map obtained from the billiard map when the angle of reflection is always equal to zero. Our main result states that for a generic polygon, if the reflection law has a Lips…
We describe a one-parameter family of dispersing (hence hyperbolic, ergodic and mixing) billiards where the correlation function of the collision map decays as $1/n^a$ (here $n$ denotes the discrete time), in which the degree $a \in (1, \infty)$ changes continuously with the parameter of the family, $β$. We also derive an explicit relation between the degree $a$ and the family parameter $β$.
We consider the outer billiards map with contraction outside polygons. We construct a 1-parameter family of systems such that each system has an open set in which the dynamics is reduced to that of a piecewise contraction on the interval. Using the theory of rotation numbers, we deduce that every point inside the open set is asymptotic to either a single periodic orbit (rational case) or a Cantor set (irrational case). In particular, we deduce existence of an attracting Cantor set for certain parameter values. Moreover, for a different choice of a 1-parameter family, we prove that the system i…
Let $v$ be a unit vector field on a complete, umbilic (but not totally geodesic) hypersurface $N$ in a space form; for example on the unit sphere $S^{2k-1} \subset \mathbb{R}^{2k}$, or on a horosphere in hyperbolic space. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on $v$ for the rays with initial velocities $v$ (and $-v$) to foliate the exterior $U$ of $N$. We find and explore relationships among these vector fields, geodesic vector fields, and contact structures on $N$. When the rays corresponding to each of $\pm v$ foliate $U$, $v$ induces an outer billiard map whose billiard table is $U$. …
This paper is the third in a series which explores a combinatorial method for generating lattice polygons in the plane. I call this method the plaid model. In this paper I prove the main result I had been aiming for since the beginning, which is to show that there is a coarse isomorphism between the plaid model and the so-called arithmetic graph for outer billiards on kites. The content of the theorem is that the plaid model predicts the symbolic dynamics of the outer billiards orbits, up to an error of one unit. This result combines with the work in the other papers to give a second proof tha…
Markov partitions designed by Sinai(1968) and Bowen(1970) proved to be an efficient tool for descibing statistical properties of uniformly hyperbolic systems. For hyperbolic systems with singularities, in particular, for hyperbolic billiards the construction of a Markov partition by Bunimovich and Sinai(1980) was a delicate and hard task. Therefore later more and more flexible and simple variants of Markov partitions appeared: Markov sieves (Bunimovich-Chernov-Sinai, 1990), Markov towers (Young, 1998), standard pairs (Dolgopyat). This remarkable evolution of Sinai's original idea is surveyed i…
We consider billiard ball motion in a convex domain on a constant curvature surface influenced by the constant magnetic field. We examine the existence of integral of motion which is polynomial in velocities. We prove that if such an integral exists then the boundary curve of the domain determines an algebraic curve in $\mathbf{C}^3$ which must be nonsingular. Using this fact we deduce that for any domain different from round disc for all but finitely many values of the magnitude of the magnetic field billiard motion does not have Polynomial in velocities integral of motion.
