We study the dyadic model of the Navier-Stokes equations introduced by Katz and Pavlović. They showed a finite time blow-up in the case where the dissipation degree $α$ is less than 1/4. In this paper we prove the existence of weak solutions for all $α$, energy inequality for every weak solution with nonnegative initial datum starting from any time, local regularity for $α> 1/3$, and global regularity for $α\geq 1/2$. In addition, we prove a finite time blow-up in the case where $α<1/3$. It is remarkable that the model with $α=1/3$ enjoys the same estimates on the nonlinear term as the 4D Navier-Stokes equations. Finally, we discuss a weak global attractor, which coincides with a maximal bounded invariant set for all $α$ and becomes a strong global attractor for $α\geq 1/2$.
We partially answer a question raised by Kiselev and Zlatos in \cite{MR2180809}; in the generalized dyadic model of the Euler equation, a blow-up of $H^{1/3+δ}$-norm occurs. We recover a few previous blow-up results for various related dyadic models as corollaries.
A particular type of dyadic model for the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with forward energy cascade is studied. The model includes intermittency dimension $δ$ in the nonlinear scales. It is shown that when $δ$ is small, positive solution with large initial data for either the dyadic MHD model or the dyadic Hall MHD develops blow-up in finite time.
We consider the dyadic model with viscosity and additive Gaussian noise as a simplified version of the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations, with the purpose of studying uniqueness and emergence of singularities. We prove path-wise uniqueness and absence of blow-up in the intermediate intensity of the non-linearity, morally corresponding to the 3D case, and blow-up for stronger intensity. Moreover, blow-up happens with probability one for regular initial data.
Properties of an infinite system of nonlinearly coupled ordinary differential equations are discussed. This system models some properties present in the equations of motion for an inviscid fluid such as the skew symmetry and the 3-dimensional scaling of the quadratic nonlinearity. In a companion paper [6] it is proved that every solution for the system with forcing blows up in finite time in the Sobolev $H^{5/6}$ norm. In this present paper, it is proved that after the blow-up time all solutions stay in $H^s$, $s<5/6$ for almost all time and the energy dissipates. Moreover, it is proved that t…
We consider the dyadic model, which is a toy model to test issues of well-posedness and blow-up for the Navier-Stokes and Euler equations. We prove well-posedness of positive solutions of the viscous problem in the relevant scaling range which corresponds to Navier-Stokes. Likewise we prove well-posedness for the inviscid problem (in a suitable regularity class) when the parameter corresponds to the strongest transport effect of the non-linearity.
Katz and Pavlovic recently proposed a dyadic model of the Euler equations for which they proved finite time blow-up in the $H^{3/2+ε}$ Sobolev norm. It is shown that their model can be reduced to the dyadic inviscid Burgers equation where nonlinear interactions are restricted to dyadic wavenumbers. The inviscid Burgers equation exhibits finite time blow-up in $H^α$, for $α\ge 1/2$, but its dyadic restriction is even more singular, exhibiting blow-up for any $α> 0$. Friedlander and Pavlovic developed a closely related model for which they also prove finite time blow-up in $H^{3/2+ε}$. Some inco…
A dyadic shell model for the Navier-Stokes equations is studied in the context of turbulence. The model is an infinite nonlinearly coupled system of ODEs. It is proved that the unique fixed point is a global attractor, which converges to the global attractor of the inviscid system as viscosity goes to zero. This implies that the average dissipation rate for the viscous system converges to the anomalous dissipation rate for the inviscid system (which is positive) as viscosity goes to zero. This phenomenon is called the dissipation anomaly predicted by Kolmogorov's theory for the actual Navier-S…
Properties of an infinite system of nonlinearly coupled ordinary differential equations are discussed. This system models some properties present in the equations of motion for an inviscid fluid such as the skew symmetry and the 3-dimensional scaling of the quadratic nonlinearity. It is proved that the system with forcing has a unique equilibrium and that every solution blows up in finite time in $H^{5/6}$-norm. Onsager's conjecture is confirmed for the model system.
Assuming that ${T}$ is a potential blow up time for the Navier-Stokes system in half-space, we show that $L_{3}$-norm of the velocity field goes to $\infty$ as time t approaches $T$.
This paper proves a Serrin's type blow-up criterion for the 3D density-dependent Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations with vacuum. It is shown that if the density and velocity field satisfy some Serrin's type condition, then the strong solutions to the density-dependent Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations can exist globally.
In this note, boundary Type I blowups of suitable weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations are discussed. In particular, it has been shown that, under certain assumptions, the existence of non-trivial mild bounded ancient solutions in half space leads to the existence of suitable weak solutions with Type I blowup on the boundary.
We prove global existence of smooth solutions for a slightly supercritical dyadic model. We consider a generalized version of the dyadic model introduced by Katz-Pavlovic [2005] and add a viscosity term with critical exponent and a supercritical correction. This model catches for the dyadic a conjecture that for Navier-Stokes equations was formulated by Tao [2009].
Assuming $T$ is a potential blow up time for the Navier-Stokes system in $\mathbb{R}^3$ or $\mathbb{R}^3_+$, we show that the $L^{3,q}$ Lorentz norm, with $q$ finite, of the velocity field goes to infinity as time $t$ approaches $T$.
We improve previous known lower bounds for Sobolev norms of potential blow-up solutions to the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in $\dot{H}^\frac{3}{2}$. We also present an alternate proof for the lower bound for the $\dot{H}^\frac{5}{2}$ blow-up.
In this paper, we give two family of explicit blowup solution for $3$D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\RR^3$. Here one family of solutions admit the smooth initial data, and the initial data of another family of solutions are not smooth. The energy of those solutions is infinite.
Various formal blow-up scenarious for the Navier--Stokes equaitons in 3D are discussed. A particular interest is payed to "twistor mechanisms" based on angular logarithmic blow-up travelling waves, and to a formation of "blow-up tornado" about the singular stationary Slezkin--Landau solutions (1934--44) of a submerged jet. A survey on various related aspects of singularity analysis for nonlinear parabolic PDEs is enclosed.
In this paper, we prove two results about the blow up criterion of the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equation in the sobolev space $\dot H^{5/2}$. The first one improves the result of \cite{CZ}. The second deals with the relationship of the blow up in $\dot H^{5/2}$ and some critical spaces. Fourier analysis and standard techniques are used.

In this paper, we establish the existence and uniqueness of local strong solutions to the kinetic Cucker--Smale model coupled with the isentropic compressible Navier--Stokes equation in the whole space. Moreover, the blowup mechanism for strong solutions to the coupled system is also investigated.
We establish a blowup criterion for the two-dimensional (2D) full compressible Navier-Stokes system. The criterion is given in terms of the divergence of the velocity field only, and is independent of the temperature. It is almost the same as that of barotropic case.
We study the strong solution to the 3-D compressible Navier--Stokes equations. We propose a new blow up criterion for barotropic gases in terms of the integral norm of density $ρ$ and the divergence of the velocity $\bu$ without any restriction on the physical viscosity constants. Our blow up criteria can be seen as a partial realization of the underlying principle that the higher integrability implies the boundedness and then eventual regularity. We also present similar blow up criterion for the heat conducting gases.
A blowup criteria along maximum point of the 3D-Navier-Stokes flow in terms of function spaces with variable growth condition is constructed. This criterion is different from the Beale-Kato-Majda type and Constantin-Fefferman type criterion. If geometric behavior of the velocity vector field near the maximum point has a kind of symmetry up to a possible blowup time, then the solution can be extended to be the strong solution beyond the possible blowup time.
The solutions of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in four spatial dimensions are considered. We prove that the two-dimensional Hausdorff measure of the set of singular points at the first blow-up time is equal to zero.
This paper deals with the finite-time blow-up phenomena of classical solutions for Vlasov/Navier-Stokes equations under suitable assumptions on the initial configurations. We show that a solution to the coupled kinetic-fluid system may be initially smooth, however, it can become singular in a finite period of time. We provide a simple idea of showing the finite time blow up of classical solutions to the coupled system which has not been studied so far. We also obtain analogous results for related systems, such as isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations, two-phase fluid equations consis…
It is shown that the one-dimensional or two-dimensional radially symmetric isothermal compressible Navier-Stokes system has no non-trivial global smooth solutions if the initial density is compactly supported. This result is a generalization of Xin's work \cite{Xin98} to the isothermal case.
In this paper, we present a simple proof of blow up criterion of Bjorland and Vasseur for three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations by energy method and some facts in real analysis.
In the present note, we address the question about behavior of $L_3$-norm of the velocity field as time $t$ approaches blow-up time $T$. It is known that the upper limit of the above norm must be equal to infinity. We show that, for blow-ups of type I, the lower limit of $L_3$-norm equals to infinity as well.
We prove a blow-up criterion in terms of the upper bound of the density for the strong solution to the 3-D compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The initial vacuum is allowed. The main ingredient of the proof is \textit{a priori} estimate for an important quantity under the assumption that the density is upper bounded, whose divergence can be viewed as the effective viscous flux.
In this paper we consider smooth solutions of the Navier--Stokes equations with a linear dependence on the spatial variable. We reduce the evolution of these solutions to a matrix ODE, and show that there are such solutions that blowup in finite-time. Note that because these solutions have linear growth at infinity, this blowup is not a counterexample disproving the global regularity of strong solutions of the Navier--Stokes equations, as strong solutions must have sufficient decay at infinity. This paper does not resolve the Millennium Problem. Nonetheless, these solutions do exhibit several …
We study blow-up rates and the blow-up profiles of possible asymptotically self-similar singularities of the 3D Euler equations, where the sense of convergence and self-similarity are considered in various sense. We extend much further, in particular, the previous nonexistence results of self-similar/asymptotically self-similar singularities obtained in \cite{cha1,cha2}. Some implications the notions for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations are also deduced. Generalization of the self-similar transforms is also considered, and by appropriate choice of the transform we obtain new \textit{a priori} es…
We derive dyadic models for the magnetohydrodynamics with Hall effect by including the intermittency dimension as a parameter. For such dyadic models, existence of global weak solutions is established. In addition, local strong solution is obtained; while global strong solution is obtained in the case of high intermittency dimension. Moreover, we show that positive solution with large initial data develops blow-up in finite time provided the intermittency dimension is lower than a threshold.
We study the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of the axisymmetric linear strain, where the strain rate depends on time in a specific manner. It is known that the system admits solutions which blow up in finite time and whose profiles are in a backward self-similar form of the familiar Burgers vortices. In this paper it is shown that the existing stability theory of the Burgers vortex leads to the stability of these blow-up solutions as well. The secondary blow-up is also observed when the strain rate is relatively weak.
In this paper, we study a hydrodynamical system modeling the deformation of vesicle membrane under external incompressible viscous flow fields. The system is in the Eulerian formulation and is governed by the coupling of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a phase field equation. In the three dimensional case, we establish two logarithmically improved blow-up criteria for local smooth solutions of this system in terms of the vorticity field only in the homogeneous Besov spaces.
In this work we investigate the question of preventing the three-dimensional, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations from developing singularities, by controlling one component of the velocity field only, in space-time scale invariant norms. In particular we prove that it is not possible for one component of the velocity field to tend to~$0$ too fast near blow up. We also introduce a space "almost" invariant under the action of the scaling such that if one component of the velocity field measured in this space remains small enough, then there is no blow up.
In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible flows. The initial data are assumed to be smooth and rapidly decaying at infinity. A famous open problem is whether classical solutions can develop singularities in finite time. Assuming the maximum interval of existence to be finite, we give a unified discussion of various known solution properties as time approaches the blow-up time.
We study the 4-dimensional pressureless Navier--Stokes-Poisson equations with density-dependent viscosity. The analytical solutions with arbitrary time blowup, in radial symmetry, are constructed in this paper.
It is shown that Wiener's regularity of the vertex of a backward paraboloid for 3D Navier-Stokes equations with zero Dirichlet conditions on the paraboloid boundary is given by Petrovskii's criterion for the heat equation (1934), i.e., the nonlinear convection term does not affect the regularity result.
Considering initial data in $\dot{H}^s$, with $\frac{1}{2} \textless{} s \textless{} \frac{3}{2}$, this paper is devoted to the study of possible blowing-up Navier-Stokes solutions such that $(T*(u\_{0}) -t)^{\frac{1}{2} (s- \frac{1}{2})} \,\, \| u \|\_{\dot{H}^s}}$ is bounded. Our result is in the spirit of the tremendous works of L. Escauriaza, G. Seregin, and V. $\breve{\mathrm{S}}$ver$\acute{\mathrm{a}}$k and I. Gallagher, G. Koch, F. Planchon, where they proved there is no blowing-up solution which remain bounded in $L^3(R^3)$. The main idea is that if such blowing-up solutions exist, the…
In this paper, we mainly prove the existence of the minimal blow-up initial data in critical Fourier-Herz space $F\dot{B}^{2-{\frac3p}}_{p,q}(\RR^3)$ with $1<p\leq\infty$ and $1\leq q<\infty$ for the three dimensional incompressible potential Navier-Stokes equations by developing techniques of "localization in space" involving the partial regularity given by the De Giorgi iteration, weak-strong uniqueness, the short-time behaviour of the kinetic energy and stability of singularity of Calderón's solution.
Under assumption that $T^{\ast}$ is the maximal time of existence of smooth solution of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations in the Sobolev space $H^{s}$, we establish lower bounds for the blow-up rate of the type$\ \left( T^{\ast }-t\right) ^{-φ\left( n\right) }$, where $n$ is a natural number independent of $s$ and $φ$ is a linear function. Using this new type in the 3D Navier-Stokes equations in the $H^{5/2}$, both on the whole space and in the periodic case, we give an answer to a question left open by James et al (2012, J. Math. Phys.). We also prove optimal lower bounds for the blow-up rate in…
We prove quantitative regularity and blowup theorems for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb R^d$, $d\geq4$ when the solution lies in the critical space $L_t^\infty L_x^d$. Explicit subcritical bounds on the solution are obtained in terms of the critical norm. A consequence is that $\|u(t)\|_{L_x^d(\mathbb R^d)}$ grows at a minimum rate of $(\log\log\log\log(T_*-t)^{-1})^c$ along a sequence of times approaching a hypothetical blowup at $T_*$. These results quantify a theorem of Dong and Du and extend the three-dimensional work of Tao.
S. Montgomery-Smith provided a one dimensional model for the three dimensional, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, for which he proved the blow up of solutions associated to a class of large initial data, while the same global existence results as for the Navier-Stokes equations hold for small data. In this note the model is adapted to the case of two and three space dimensions, with the additional feature that the divergence free condition is preserved. It is checked that the family of initial data constructed previously by J.-Y Chemin and I. Gallagher which is arbitrarily large but yet …
We study the low-energy solutions to the 3D compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations. We first obtain the existence of smooth solutions with small $L^2$-norm and essentially bounded densities. No smallness assumption is imposed on the $H^4$-norm of the initial data. Using a compactness argument, we further obtain the existence of weak solutions which may have discontinuities across some hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We also provide a blow-up criterion of solutions in terms of the $L^\infty$-norm of density.
We study the finite time blow up of smooth solutions to the Compressible Navier-Stokes system when the initial data contain vacuums. We prove that any classical solutions of viscous compressible fluids without heat conduction will blow up in finite time, as long as the initial data has an isolated mass group (see definition in the paper). The results hold regardless of either the size of the initial data or the far fields being vacuum or not. This improves the blowup results of Xin (1998) by removing the crucial assumptions that the initial density has compact support and the smooth solution h…
