We consider the dyadic model, which is a toy model to test issues of well-posedness and blow-up for the Navier-Stokes and Euler equations. We prove well-posedness of positive solutions of the viscous problem in the relevant scaling range which corresponds to Navier-Stokes. Likewise we prove well-posedness for the inviscid problem (in a suitable regularity class) when the parameter corresponds to the strongest transport effect of the non-linearity.
A dyadic shell model for the Navier-Stokes equations is studied in the context of turbulence. The model is an infinite nonlinearly coupled system of ODEs. It is proved that the unique fixed point is a global attractor, which converges to the global attractor of the inviscid system as viscosity goes to zero. This implies that the average dissipation rate for the viscous system converges to the anomalous dissipation rate for the inviscid system (which is positive) as viscosity goes to zero. This phenomenon is called the dissipation anomaly predicted by Kolmogorov's theory for the actual Navier-S…
We prove global existence of smooth solutions for a slightly supercritical dyadic model. We consider a generalized version of the dyadic model introduced by Katz-Pavlovic [2005] and add a viscosity term with critical exponent and a supercritical correction. This model catches for the dyadic a conjecture that for Navier-Stokes equations was formulated by Tao [2009].
We study the dyadic model of the Navier-Stokes equations introduced by Katz and Pavlović. They showed a finite time blow-up in the case where the dissipation degree $α$ is less than 1/4. In this paper we prove the existence of weak solutions for all $α$, energy inequality for every weak solution with nonnegative initial datum starting from any time, local regularity for $α> 1/3$, and global regularity for $α\geq 1/2$. In addition, we prove a finite time blow-up in the case where $α<1/3$. It is remarkable that the model with $α=1/3$ enjoys the same estimates on the nonlinear term as the 4D Navi…
In this paper, we study the role of boundary conditions on the optimal shape of a dyadic tree in which flows a Newtonian fluid. Our optimization problem consists in finding the shape of the tree that minimizes the viscous energy dissipated by the fluid with a constrained volume, under the assumption that the total flow of the fluid is conserved throughout the structure. These hypotheses model situations where a fluid is transported from a source towards a 3D domain into which the transport network also spans. Such situations could be encountered in organs like for instance the lungs and the va…
We consider the dyadic model with viscosity and additive Gaussian noise as a simplified version of the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations, with the purpose of studying uniqueness and emergence of singularities. We prove path-wise uniqueness and absence of blow-up in the intermediate intensity of the non-linearity, morally corresponding to the 3D case, and blow-up for stronger intensity. Moreover, blow-up happens with probability one for regular initial data.
The dyadic problem $\dot u_n + λ^{2n} u_n - λ^{βn} u_{n-1}^2 + λ^{β(n+1)} u_n u_{n+1} = 0$ with "smooth" initial data is considered. The uniqueness of the Leray-Hopf solution is proved.
In this paper, we introduce a finite propagation speed perturbation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (NS). The model we consider is inspired by a hyperbolic perturbation of the heat equation due to Cattaneo (Sulla conduzione del calore. Atti Semin. Mat. Fis. Univ., Modena, 1949, 3:83-101) and by an equation that Vishik and Fursikov (Solutions statistiques homogènes des systèmes différentiels paraboliques et du système de Navier-Stokes. Ann. Scuola Norm. Sup. Pisa Cl. Sci., 1977, 4:531-576) investigated in order to find statistical solutions to (NS). We prove that the solutions to …
In this paper, we prove existence of smooth solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations that gives a positive answer to the problem proposed by Fefferman [3].
In this paper, we consider the smooth solutions of 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in periodic domains. We prove that, in the absence of external forces and with divergence-free smooth periodic initial data, periodic smooth solutions of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations exist for all time.
It is shown that the one-dimensional or two-dimensional radially symmetric isothermal compressible Navier-Stokes system has no non-trivial global smooth solutions if the initial density is compactly supported. This result is a generalization of Xin's work \cite{Xin98} to the isothermal case.
The existence of singular solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes system with singular external forces, the existence of regular solutions for more regular forces as well as the asymptotic stability of small solutions (including stationary ones), and a pointwise loss of smoothness for solutions are proved in the same function space of pseudomeasure type.
This article is devoted to a regularity criteria for solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in terms of regularity along the stream lines. More precisely, we prove that a suitable weak solution for the Navier-Stokes equations is regular under some constraint on the second derivative of |u| along the stream lines.
If $u$ is a smooth solution of the Navier--Stokes equations on ${\mathbb R}^3$ with first blowup time $T$, we prove lower bounds for $u$ in the Sobolev spaces $\dot H^{3/2}$, $\dot H^{5/2}$, and the Besov space $\dot B^{5/2}_{2,1}$, with optimal rates of blowup: we prove the strong lower bounds $\|u(t)\|_{\dot H^{3/2}}\ge c(T-t)^{-1/2}$ and $\|u(t)\|_{\dot B^{5/2}_{2,1}}\ge c(T-t)^{-1}$, but in $\dot H^{5/2}$ we only obtain the weaker result $\limsup_{t\to T^-}(T-t)\|u(t)\|_{\dot H^{5/2}}\ge c$. The proofs involve new inequalities for the nonlinear term in Sobolev and Besov spaces, both of whi…
Solutions of the Navier-Stokes and Euler equations with initial conditions for 2D and 3D cases were obtained in the form of converging series, by an analytical iterative method using Fourier and Laplace transforms \cite{TT10,TT11}. There the solutions are infinitely differentiable functions, and for several combinations of parameters numerical results are presented. This article provides a detailed proof of the existence, uniqueness and smoothness of the solution of the Cauchy problem for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations with any smooth initial velocity. When the viscosity tends to zero, this pr…
In this paper we describe a method to derive solutions of the incompressible Navier- Stokes system of equations for non-stationary initial value problems in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We show that for a given smooth solenoidal initial velocity vector field there exist smooth spatially periodic solutions of pressure and velocity in $\mathbb{R}^n$. An illustrative example in $\mathbb{R}^3$ provides important insights into the ostensible phenomenon of the blowup time.
Time decay estimate of solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system is studied. Concerning the linearized problem, the decay estimate with diffusion wave property for an initial data is derived. As an application, the time decay estimate of solutions to the nonlinear problem is given. In contrast to the compressible Navier-Stokes system, for linear system regularities of the initial data are lower and independent of the order of derivative of solutions owing to smoothing effect from the Korteweg tensor. Furthermore, for the nonlinear system diffusion wave property is obtained wi…
Different authors had received a lot of results regarding the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. Existence and smoothness of solution for the Navier-Stokes equations in two dimensions have been known for a long time. Leray showed that the Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensional space have a weak solution. Scheffer, and Shnirelman, obtained weak solution of the Euler equations with compact support in spacetime. Caffarelli, Kohn and Nirenberg improved Scheffer's results, and F.-H. Lin simplified the proof of the results of J. Leray. Many problems and conjectures about behavior of weak solut…
In this work, we are interested in the link between strong solutions of the Boltzmann and the Navier-Stokes equations. To justify this connection, our main idea is to use information on the limit system (for instance the fact that the Navier-Stokes equations are globally wellposed in two space dimensions or when the data are small). In particular we prove that the life span of the solutions to the rescaled Boltzmann equation is bounded from below by that of the Navier-Stokes system. We deal with general initial data in the whole space in dimensions 2 and 3, and also with well-prepared data in …
The Navier-Stokes equation on the Euclidean space $\mathbf{R}^3$ can be expressed in the form $\partial_t u = Δu + B(u,u)$, where $B$ is a certain bilinear operator on divergence-free vector fields $u$ obeying the cancellation property $\langle B(u,u), u\rangle=0$ (which is equivalent to the energy identity for the Navier-Stokes equation). In this paper, we consider a modification $\partial_t u = Δu + \tilde B(u,u)$ of this equation, where $\tilde B$ is an averaged version of the bilinear operator $B$ (where the average involves rotations and Fourier multipliers of order zero), and which also …
In this paper we consider smooth solutions of the Navier--Stokes equations with a linear dependence on the spatial variable. We reduce the evolution of these solutions to a matrix ODE, and show that there are such solutions that blowup in finite-time. Note that because these solutions have linear growth at infinity, this blowup is not a counterexample disproving the global regularity of strong solutions of the Navier--Stokes equations, as strong solutions must have sufficient decay at infinity. This paper does not resolve the Millennium Problem. Nonetheless, these solutions do exhibit several …
Existence of local-in-time unique solution and loss of smoothness of full Magnet-Hydro-Dynamics system (MHD) is considered for periodic initial data. The result is proven using Fujita-Kato's method in $\ell^1$ based (for the Fourier coefficients) functional spaces enabling us to easily estimate nonlinear terms in the system as well as solutions to Maxwells's equations. A loss of smoothness result is shown for the velocity and magnetic field. It comes from the damped-wave operator which does not have any smoothing effect.
This paper discussed the global existence of the smoothing solution for the Navier-Stokes equations. At first, we construct the theory of the linear equations which is about the unknown four variables functions with constant coefficients. Secondly, we use this theory to convert the Navier-Stokes equations into the simultaneous of the first order linear partial differential equations with constant coefficients and the quadratic equations. Thirdly, we use the Fourier transformation to convert the first order linear partial differential equations with constant coefficients into the linear equatio…
The Cauchy problem and spatially periodic problem of incompressible Navier-Stokes equation are considered. The existence and uniqueness of global solution for these two problem with infinite smooth initial data $u_0$, i.e. $u_0,\;(u_0\cdot\nab)u_0\in H^{\infty}$, are established. Moreover these two problem with initial data $u_0\in H^m$ ($m\ge1$) are globally well-posed provided the Fourier frequency of $u_0$ is contained in a bounded compact set.
We consider the Cauchy problem for incompressible Navier-Stokes equations $u_t+u\nabla_xu-Δu+\nabla p=0, div u=0 in R^d \times R^+$ with initial data $a\in L^d(R^d)$, and study in some detail the smoothing effect of the equation. We prove that for $T<\infty$ and for any positive integers $n$ and $m$ we have $t^{m+n/2}D^m_tD^{n}_x u\in L^{d+2}(R^d\times (0,T))$, as long as the $\|u\|_{L^{d+2}_{x,t}(R^d\times (0,T))}$ stays finite.
We prove the global existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions to the one-dimensional barotropic Navier-Stokes system with degenerate viscosity $μ(ρ)=ρ^α$. We establish that the smooth solutions have possibly two different far-fields, and the initial density remains positive globally in time, for the initial data satisfying the same conditions. In addition, our result works for any $α>0$, i.e., for a large class of degenerate viscosities. In particular, our models include the viscous shallow water equations. This extends the result of Constantin-Drivas-Nguyen-Pasqualotto \cite[Theorem 1.5]{C…
Fluid configurations in three-dimensions, displaying a plausible decay of regularity in a finite time, are suitably built and examined. Vortex rings are the primary ingredients in this study. The full Navier-Stokes system is converted into a 3D scalar problem, where appropriate numerical methods are implemented in order to figure out the behavior of the solutions. Further simplifications in 2D and 1D provide interesting toy problems, that may be used as a starting platform for a better understanding of blowup phenomena.
We establish a local-in-space short-time smoothing effect for the Navier-Stokes equations in the half space. The whole space analogue, due to Jia and Šverák [JŠ14], is a central tool in two of the authors' recent work on quantitative $L^3_x$ blow-up criteria [BP21]. The main difficulty is that the non-local effects of the pressure in the half space are much stronger than in the whole space. As an application, we demonstrate that the critical $L^3_x$ norm must concentrate at scales $\sim \sqrt{T^* - t}$ in the presence of a Type I blow-up.
In this paper, we prove the existence of smooth initial data for the 2D free boundary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, for which the smoothness of the interface breaks down in finite time into a splash singularity.
For any divergence free initial datum $u_0$ with $\|u_0\|_\infty+\|\nabla u_0\|_{L^p}+\|\nabla^2 u_0\|_{L^p}<\infty$ for some $p>d\ (d\ge 2)$, the well-posedness and smoothness are proved for incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on $\mathbb{R}^d$ or $\mathbb{T}^d:=\mathbb{R}^d/\mathbb{Z}^d,$ up to a time explicitly given by the initial datum and three constants coming from the upper bounds of the heat kernel and the Riesz transform. A mild well-posedness is also proved for $L^p$-bounded initial data. The blow-up is proved for both type solutions with finite maximal time.
We investigate the decay properties of smooth axially symmetric D-solutions to the steady Navier-Stokes equations. The achievements of this paper are two folds. One is improved decay rates of $u_þ$ and $\na {\bf u}$, especially we show that $|u_þ(r,z)|\leq c\left(\f{\log r}{r}\right)^{\f 12}$ for any smooth axially symmetric D-solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations. These improvement are based on improved weighted estimates of $\om_þ$, integral representations of ${\bf u}$ in terms of $\bm{\om}=\textit{curl }{\bf u}$ and $A_p$ weight for singular integral operators, which yields good decay e…

We consider ionic electrodiffusion in fluids, described by the Nernst-Planck-Navier-Stokes system. We prove that the system has global smooth solutions for arbitrary smooth data: arbitrary positive Dirichlet boundary conditions for the ionic concentrations, arbitrary Dirichlet boundary conditions for the potential, arbitrary positive initial concentrations, and arbitrary regular divergence-free initial velocities. The result holds for any positive diffusivities of ions, in bounded domains with smooth boundary in three space dimensions, in the case of two ionic species, coupled to Stokes equati…
In this paper, we give two family of explicit blowup solution for $3$D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\RR^3$. Here one family of solutions admit the smooth initial data, and the initial data of another family of solutions are not smooth. The energy of those solutions is infinite.
In this paper, we investigate the global regularity to 3-D inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system with axisymmetric initial data which does not have swirl component for the initial velocity. We first prove that the $L^\infty$ norm to the quotient of the inhomogeneity by $r,$ namely $a/r\eqdefa\bigl(1/\r-1\bigr)\bigl/r,$ controls the regularity of the solutions. Then we prove the global regularity of such solutions provided that the $L^\infty$ norm of $a_0/r$ is sufficiently small. Finally, with additional assumption that the initial velocity belongs to $L^p$ for some $p\in [1,2),$ w…
In this paper we rigorously justify the convergence of smooth solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Maxwell equations towards smooth solutions of the classical $2D$ parabolic MHD equations in the case of vanishing dielectric constant . The result is achieved by means of higher-order energy estimates.

Katz and Pavlovic recently proposed a dyadic model of the Euler equations for which they proved finite time blow-up in the $H^{3/2+ε}$ Sobolev norm. It is shown that their model can be reduced to the dyadic inviscid Burgers equation where nonlinear interactions are restricted to dyadic wavenumbers. The inviscid Burgers equation exhibits finite time blow-up in $H^α$, for $α\ge 1/2$, but its dyadic restriction is even more singular, exhibiting blow-up for any $α> 0$. Friedlander and Pavlovic developed a closely related model for which they also prove finite time blow-up in $H^{3/2+ε}$. Some inco…
We consider solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation with fractional dissipation of order $α\geq 1$. We show that for any divergence-free initial datum $u_0$ such that $||u_0||_{H^δ} \leq M$, where $M$ is arbitrarily large and $δ$ is arbitrarily small, there exists an explicit $ε=ε(M, δ)>0$ such that the Navier-Stokes equations with fractional order $α$ has a unique smooth solution for $α\in (\frac{5}{4}-ε, \frac{5}{4}]$. This is related to a new stability result on smooth solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations with fractional dissipation showing that the set of initial data and fractional or…
This paper is concerned with two dual aspects of the regularity question of the Navier-Stokes equations. First, we prove a local in time localized smoothing effect for local energy solutions. More precisely, if the initial data restricted to the unit ball belongs to the scale-critical space $L^3$, then the solution is locally smooth in space for some short time, which is quantified. This builds upon the work of Jia and Šverák, who considered the subcritical case. Second, we apply these localized smoothing estimates to prove a concentration phenomenon near a possible Type I blow-up. Namely, we …
Motivated by \cite{CG10,CZ6}, we prove the global existence of solutions to the two-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with smooth initial data which are slowly varying in one direction and with initial density being away from vacuum. In particular, we present examples of initial data which generate unique global smooth solutions to 2D compressible Navier-Stokes equations with constant viscosity and with initial data which are neither small perturbation of some constant equilibrium state nor of small energy.
In this paper we study the periodic Navier--Stokes equation. From the periodic Navier--Stokes equation and the linear equation $\partial_t u = νΔu + \mathbb{P} [v\nabla u]$ we derive the corresponding equations for the time dependent Fourier coefficients $a_k(t)$. We prove the existence of a unique smooth solution $u$ of the linear equation by a Montel space version of Arzelà--Ascoli. We gain bounds on the $a_k$'s of $u$ depending on $v$. With $v = -u$ these bounds show that a unique smooth solution $u$ of the $n$-dimensional periodic Navier--Stokes equation exists for all $t\in [0,T^*)$ with …
