We consider the case of an exponential map for which the singular value is accessible from the set of escaping points. We show that there are dynamic rays of which do not land. In particular, there is no analog of Douady's ``pinched disk model'' for exponential maps whose singular value belongs to the Julia set.
We also prove that the boundary of a Siegel disk $U$ for which the singular value is accessible both from the set of escaping points and from $U$ contains uncountably many indecomposable continua.
We consider growth conditions for (frequently) Birkhoff-universal functions of exponential type with respect to the different rays emanating from the origin. For that purpose, we investigate their (conjugate) indicator diagram or, equivalently, their indicator function. Some known results, where growth is measured with respect to the maximum modulus, are extended.
We answer a question of Schleicher by showing that, for an exponential map with nonescaping singular value, every periodic ray lands. This is an analog of a theorem of Douady and Hubbard concerning polynomials. We also prove a partial converse: there are periodic external rays landing at all periodic points, with the exception of at most one periodic orbit.
In this article, we present a landing theorem for periodic dynamic rays for transcendental entire maps which have bounded post-singular sets, by using standard hyperbolic geometry results.
The set of points that escape to infinity under iteration of a cosine map, that is, of the form $C_{a,b} \colon z \mapsto ae^z+be^{-z}$ for $a,b\in \mathbb{C}^\ast$, consists of a collection of injective curves, called dynamic rays. If a critical value of $C_{a,b}$ escapes to infinity, then some of its dynamic rays overlap pairwise and \textit{split} at critical points. We consider a large subclass of cosine maps with escaping critical values, including the map $z\mapsto \cosh(z)$. We provide an explicit topological model for their dynamics on their Julia sets. We do so by first providing a mo…
We investigate the set of parameters $κ\in\C$ for which the singular orbit $(0,e^κ,...)$ of $E_κ(z):=\exp(z+κ)$ converges to $\infty$. These parameters are organized in smooth curves in parameter space called \emph{parameter rays}.
We investigate the set $I$ of parameters $κ$ for which the singular value of $z\mapsto e^z+κ$ converges to $\infty$. The set $I$ consists of uncountably many parameter rays, plus landing points of some of these rays. We show that the parameter rays have Hausdorff dimension 1, while the ray endpoints in $I$ alone have dimension 2. Analogous results were known for dynamical planes of exponential maps; our result shows that this also holds in parameter space.
We show that repelling periodic points are landing points of periodic rays for exponential maps whose singular value has bounded orbit. For polynomials with connected Julia sets, this is a celebrated theorem by Douady, for which we present a new proof. In both cases we also show that points in hyperbolic sets are accessible by at least one and at most finitely many rays. For exponentials this allows us to conclude that the singular value itself is accessible.
We study the escaping set of functions in the class $\mathcal B^*$, that is, holomorphic functions $f:\mathbb C^*\to\mathbb C^*$ for which both zero and infinity are essential singularities, and the set of singular values of $f$ is contained in a compact annulus of $\mathbb C^*$. For functions in the class $\mathcal B^*$, escaping points lie in their Julia set. If $f$ is a composition of finite order transcendental self-maps of $\mathbb C^*$ (and hence, in the class $\mathcal B^*$), then we show that every escaping point of $f$ can be connected to one of the essential singularities by a curve …
We prove the exponential decay of correlations for C^α-observables (0<α=<2) for generic birational maps of P^k à la Bedford-Diller. In the particular case of regular birational maps, we give a better estimate of the speed of the decay, getting results as sharp as Dinh's results for Hénon maps.
Let $f$ be a Hénon-Sibony map (regular polynomial automorphism) of $\mathbb{C}^k$ and let $μ$ be the equilibrium measure of $f$. In this paper we prove that $μ$ is exponentially mixing for plurisubharmonic test functions.
We show that for many complex parameters a, the set of points that converge to infinity under iteration of the exponential map f(z)=e^z+a is connected. This includes all parameters for which the singular value escapes to infinity under iteration.
We consider parameters $λ$ for which $0$ is preperiodic under the map $z\mapstoλe^z$. Given $k$ and $l$, let $n(r)$ be the number of $λ$ satisfying $0<|λ|\leq r$ such that $0$ is mapped after $k$ iterations to a periodic point of period $l$. We determine the asymptotic behavior of $n(r)$ as $r$ tends to $\infty$.
We develop an abstract model for the dynamics of an exponential map $z\mapsto \exp(z)+κ$ on its set of escaping points and, as an analog of Boettcher's theorem for polynomials, show that every exponential map is conjugate, on a suitable subset of its set of escaping points, to a restriction of this model dynamics. Furthermore, we show that any two attracting and parabolic exponential maps are conjugate on their sets of escaping points; in fact, we construct an analog of Douady's "pinched disk model" for the Julia sets of these maps. On the other hand, we show that two exponential maps are gene…
We give a complete classification of the set of parameters $κ$ for which the singular value of $E_κ:z\mapsto \exp(z)+κ$ escapes to infinity under iteration. In particular, we show that every path-connected component of this set is a curve to infinity.
We study the bifurcation loci of quadratic (and unicritical) polynomials and exponential maps. We outline a proof that the exponential bifurcation locus is connected; this is an analog to Douady and Hubbard's celebrated theorem that (the boundary of) the Mandelbrot set is connected. For these parameter spaces, a fundamental conjecture is that hyperbolic dynamics is dense. For quadratic polynomials, this would follow from the famous stronger conjecture that the bifurcation locus (or equivalently the Mandelbrot set) is locally connected. It turns out that a formally slightly weaker statement is …
The paper deals with Newton maps of complex exponential functions and a surgery tool developed by P. Haïssinsky. The concept of "Postcritically minimal" Newton maps of complex exponential functions are introduced, analogous to postcritically finite Newton maps of polynomials. The dynamics preserving mapping is constructed between the space of postcritically finite Newton maps of polynomials and the space of postcritically minimal Newton maps of complex exponential functions.
We discuss in detail the dynamics of maps $z\mapsto ae^z+be^{-z}$ for which both critical orbits are strictly preperiodic. The points which converge to $\infty$ under iteration contain a set $R$ consisting of uncountably many curves called ``rays'', each connecting $\infty$ to a well-defined ``landing point'' in $\C$, so that every point in $\C$ is either on a unique ray or the landing point of finitely many rays. The key features of this paper are the following two: (1) this is the first example of a transcendental dynamical system where the Julia set is all of $\C$ and the dynamics is descri…
Iterated monodromy groups of postcritically-finite rational maps form a rich class of self-similar groups with interesting properties. There are examples of such groups that have intermediate growth, as well as examples that have exponential growth. These groups arise from polynomials. We show exponential growth of the $\operatorname{IMG}$ of several non-polynomial maps. These include rational maps whose Julia set is the whole sphere, rational maps with Sierpiński carpet Julia set, and obstructed Thurston maps. Furthermore, we construct the first example of a non-renormalizable polynomial with…
We extend results about the dimension of the radial Julia set of certain exponential functions to quasiregular Zorich maps in higher dimensions. Our results improve on previous estimates of the dimension also in the special case of exponential functions.
We give a combinatorial classification of postsingularly finite exponential maps in terms of external addresses starting with the entry 0. This is an extension of the classification results for critically preperiodic polynomials \cite{BFH} to exponential maps. Our proof relies on the topological characterization of postsingularly finite exponential maps given recently in \cite{HSS}. Our results illustrate once again the fruitful interplay between combinatorics, topology and complex structure which has often been successful in complex dynamics.
Since 1984, many authors have studied the dynamics of maps of the form $\mathcal{E}_a(z) = e^z - a$, with $a > 1$. It is now well-known that the Julia set of such a map has an intricate topological structure known as a Cantor bouquet, and much is known about the dynamical properties of these functions. In recent papers some of these ideas have been generalised to a class of quasiregular maps in $\mathbb{R}^3$, which, in a precise sense, is analogous to the class of maps of the form $\mathcal{E}_a$. Our goal in this paper is to make similar generalisations in $\mathbb{R}^2$. In particular, we s…
For exponential mappings such that the orbit of the only singular value 0 is bounded, it is shown that no integrable density invariant under the dynamics exists on the complex plane.
Devaney and Krych showed that for the exponential family $λe^z$, where $0<λ<1/e$, the Julia set consists of uncountably many pairwise disjoint simple curves tending to $\infty$. Viana proved that these curves are smooth. In this article we consider a quasiregular counterpart of the exponential map, the so-called Zorich maps, and generalize Viana's result to these maps.
This article investigates the parameter space of the exponential family $z\mapsto \exp(z)+κ$. We prove that the boundary (in $\C$) of every hyperbolic component is a Jordan arc, as conjectured by Eremenko and Lyubich as well as Baker and Rippon. In fact, we prove the stronger statement that the exponential bifurcation locus is connected in $\C$, which is an analog of Douady and Hubbard's celebrated theorem that the Mandelbrot set is connected. We show furthermore that $\infty$ is not accessible through any nonhyperbolic ("queer") stable component. The main part of the argument consists of demo…
We consider random dynamical systems on manifolds modeled by a skew product which have certain geometric properties and whose measures satisfy quenched decay of correlations at a sufficient rate. We prove that the limiting distribution for the hitting and return times to geometric balls are both exponential for almost every realisation. We then apply this result to random $C^2$ maps of the interval and random parabolic maps on the unit interval.
We obtain a unique, canonical one-to-one correspondence between the space of marked postcritically finite Newton maps of polynomials and the space of postcritically minimal Newton maps of entire maps that take the form $p(z) \text{exp}(q(z))$ for $p(z)$, $q(z)$ polynomials and $\text{exp}(z)$, the complex exponential function. This bijection preserves the dynamics and embedding of Julia sets and is induced by a surgery tool developed by Haïssinsky.
We show that for entire maps of the form $z \mapsto λ\exp(z)$ such that the orbit of zero is bounded and such that Lebesgue almost every point is transitive, no absolutely continuous invariant probability measure can exist. This answers a long-standing open problem.
We study the exponential maps induced by Sobolev type right-invariant (weak) Riemannian metrics of order $k\ge1$ on the Lie group of smooth, orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of the circle. We prove that each of them defines an {\em analytic} Fréchet chart of the identity.
We relate the properties of the postsingular set for the exponential family to the questions of stability. We calculate the action of the Ruelle operator for the exponential family. We prove that if the asymptotic value is a summable point and its orbit satisfies certain topological conditions, the map is unstable hence there are no Beltrami differentials in the Julia set. Also we show that if the postsingular set is a compact set, then the singular value is summable.
The Julia set of the exponential family $E_κ:z\mapstoκe^z$, $κ>0$ was shown to be the entire complex plane when $κ>1/e$ essentially by Misiurewicz. Later, Devaney and Krych showed that for $0<κ\leq1/e$ the Julia set is an uncountable union of pairwise disjoint simple curves tending to infinity. Bergweiler generalized the result of Devaney and Krych for a three dimensional analogue of the exponential map called the Zorich map. We show that the Julia set of certain Zorich maps with symmetry is the entire $\mathbb{R}^3$ generalizing Misiurewicz's result. Moreover, we show that the periodic points…
This paper studies the behavior under iteration of the maps T_{ab}(x,y) = (F_{ab}(x)-y,x) of the plane R^2, in which F_{ab}(x)=ax if x>=0 and bx if x<0. The orbits under iteration correspond to solutions of the nonlinear difference equation x_{n+2}= 1/2(a-b)|x_{n+1}| + 1/2(a+b)x_{n+1} - x_n. This family of piecewise-linear maps has the parameter space (a,b)\in R^2. These maps are area-preserving homeomorphisms of R^2 that map rays from the origin into rays from the origin. The action on rays defines a map S_{ab} of the circle, which has a well-defined rotation number. This paper characterizes …
We prove exponential contraction of renormalization along hybrid classes of infinitely renormalizable unimodal maps (with arbitrary combinatorics), in any even degree $d$. We then conclude that orbits of renormalization are asymptotic to the full renormalization horseshoe, which we construct. Our argument for exponential contraction is based on a precompactness property of the renormalization operator ("beau bounds"), which is leveraged in the abstract analysis of holomorphic iteration. Besides greater generality, it yields a unified approach to all combinatorics and degrees: there is no need …
We show that an exponential map $f_c(z)=e^z+c$ whose singular value $c$ is combinatorially non-recurrent and non-escaping is uniquely determined by its combinatorics, i.e. the pattern in which its dynamic rays land together. We do this by constructing puzzles and parapuzzles in the exponential family. We also prove a theorem about hyperbolicity of the postsingular set in the case that the singular value is non-recurrent. Finally, we show that boundedness of the postsingular set implies combinatorial non-recurrence if $c$ is in the Julia set.
We consider the conservative Hénon family at the period-doubling bifurcation of its fixed point and demonstrate that the separatrices of the fixed saddle point nearing the bifurcation split exponentially: given that $λ_+$ is the smaller of the eigenvalues of the saddle point, the angle between the separatrices along the homoclinic orbit satisfies $$\sin α= O(e^{-{π^2 \over \log |λ_+|}})+ O\left( e^{-2 (1-κ) {π^2 \over \log |λ_+|}} \right),$$ for any positive $κ<1$.
In this paper we define a topological class of branched covering maps of the plane called {\em topological exponential maps of type $(p,q)$} and denoted by $\TE_{p,q}$, where $p\geq 0$ and $q\geq 1$. We follow the framework given in \cite{Ji} to study the problem of combinatorially characterizing an entire map $P e^{Q}$, where $P$ is a polynomial of degree $p$ and $Q$ is a polynomial of degree $q$ using an {\em iteration scheme defined by Thurston} and a {\em bounded geometry condition}. We first show that an element $f \in {\TE}_{p,q}$ with finite post-singular set is combinatorially equivale…
This paper introduces iterated monodromy groups for transcendental functions and discusses them in the simplest setting, for post-singularly finite exponential functions. These groups are self-similar groups in a natural way, based on an explicit construction in terms of kneading sequences. We investigate the group theoretic properties of these groups, and show in particular that they are amenable, but they are not elementary subexponentially amenable.
We consider transcendental entire functions that are compositions of a polynomial and the exponential for which all singular values escape on disjoint rays. Based on their classification in [B3] we investigate their dependence on parameters, that is, on the potentials and external addresses of singular values. Using continuity argument we generalize the classification in [B3] to the case when dynamic rays containing singular values are (pre-)periodic.
We prove that every finite energy $J$-holomorphic map $u(s,t):\mathbb R\times S^1 \rightarrow {\mathbb R} \times \widetilde{M}$ exponentially converges to a periodic orbit of Reeb vector field of $\widetilde M,$ as $s\to \infty.$
We show that genuinely higher rank expanding actions of abelian semi-groups on compact manifolds are $C^{\infty}$-conjugate to affine actions on infra-nilmanifolds. This is based on the classification of expanding diffeomorphisms up to \holder conjugacy by Gromov and Shub, and is similar to recent work on smooth classification of higher rank Anosov actions on tori and nilmanifolds. To prove regularity of the conjugacy in the higher rank setting, we establish exponential mixing of solenoid actions induced from semi-group actions by nilmanifold endomorphisms, a result of independent interest. We…
We prove a Berry-Esseen theorem, a local central limit theorem and (local) large and (global) moderate deviations principles for i.i.d. (uniformly) random non-uniformly expanding or hyperbolic maps with exponential first return times. Using existing results the problem is reduced to certain random (Young) tower extensions, which is the main focus of this paper. On the random towers we will obtain our results using contraction properties of random complex equivariant cones with respect to the complex Hilbert projective metric.
We study the dynamics of iterated cosine maps $E\colon z \mapsto ae^z+be^{-z},$ with $a,b \in \C\setminus \{0\}$. We show that the points which converge to infinity under iteration are organized in the form of rays and, as in the exponential family, every escaping point is either on one of these rays or the landing point of a unique ray. Thus we get a complete classification of the escaping points of the cosine family, confirming a conjecture of Eremenko in this case. We also get a particularly strong version of the ``dimension paradox'': the set of rays has Hausdorff dimension 1, while the se…
We consider random perturbations of non-uniformly expanding maps, possibly having a non-degenerate critical set. We prove that, if the Lebesgue measure of the set of points failing the non-uniform expansion or the slow recurrence to the critical set at a certain time, for almost all random orbits, decays in a (stretched) exponential fashion, then the decay of correlations along random orbits is stretched exponential, up to some waiting time. As applications, we obtain almost sure stretched exponential decay of random correlations for Viana maps, as for a class of non-uniformly expanding local …
We study the distribution of periodic points for a wide class of maps, namely entire transcendental functions of finite order and with bounded set of singular values, or compositions thereof. Fix $p\in\N$ and assume that all dynamic rays which are invariant under $f^p$ land. An interior $p$-periodic point is a fixed point of $f^p$ which is not the landing point of any periodic ray invariant under $f^p$. Points belonging to attracting, Siegel or Cremer cycles are examples of interior periodic points. For functions as above we show that rays which are invariant under $f^p$, together with their l…
We consider two examples of Viana maps for which the base dynamics has singularities (discontinuities or critical points) and show the existence of a unique absolutely continuous invariant probability measure and related ergodic properties such as stretched exponential decay of correlations and stretched exponential large deviations.
In one-dimensional real and complex dynamics, a map whose post-singular (or post-critical) set is bounded and uniformly repelling is often called a Misiurewicz map. In results hitherto, perturbing a Misiurewicz map is likely to give a non-hyperbolic map, as per Jakobson's Theorem for unimodal interval maps. This is despite genericity of hyperbolic parameters (at least in the interval setting). We show the contrary holds in the complex exponential family $z \mapsto λ\exp(z)$: Misiurewicz maps are Lebesgue density points for hyperbolic parameters. As a by-product, we also show that Lyapunov expo…
Chaotic dynamics with sensitive dependence on initial conditions may result in exponential decay of correlation functions. We show that for one-dimensional interval maps the corresponding quantities, that is, Lyapunov exponents and exponential decay rates are related. For piecewise linear expanding Markov maps observed via piecewise analytic functions we provide explicit bounds of the decay rate in terms of the Lyapunov exponent. In addition, we comment on similar relations for general piecewise smooth expanding maps.
We prove a number of results concerning the Hausdorff and packing dimension of sets of points which escape (at least in average) to infinity at a given rate under non-autonomous iteration of exponential maps. In particular, we generalize the results proved by Sixsmith in 2016 and answer his question on annular itineraries for exponential maps.
In this paper we deal with the following family of exponential maps $(f_λ:z\mapsto λ(e^z-1))_{λ\in [1,+\infty)}$. Denoting $d(λ)$ the hyperbolic dimension of $f_λ$. It is known that the function $λ\mapsto d(λ)$ is real analytic in $(1,+\infty)$, and that it is continuous in $[1,+\infty)$. In this paper we prove that this map is C$^1$ on $[1,+\infty)$, with $d'(1^+)=0$. Moreover, depending on the value of $d(1)$, we give estimates of the speed of convergence towards 0.
We consider two dimensional maps preserving a foliation which is uniformly contracting and a one dimensional associated quotient map having exponential convergence to equilibrium (iterates of Lebesgue measure converge exponentially fast to physical measure). We prove that these maps have exponential decay of correlations over a large class of observables. We use this result to deduce exponential decay of correlations for the Poincare maps of a large class of singular hyperbolic flows. From this we deduce logarithm laws for these flows.
