This article investigates the parameter space of the exponential family $z\mapsto \exp(z)+κ$. We prove that the boundary (in $\C$) of every hyperbolic component is a Jordan arc, as conjectured by Eremenko and Lyubich as well as Baker and Rippon. In fact, we prove the stronger statement that the exponential bifurcation locus is connected in $\C$, which is an analog of Douady and Hubbard's celebrated theorem that the Mandelbrot set is connected. We show furthermore that $\infty$ is not accessible through any nonhyperbolic ("queer") stable component.
The main part of the argument consists of demonstrating a general "Squeezing Lemma", which controls the structure of parameter space near infinity. We also prove a second conjecture of Eremenko and Lyubich concerning bifurcation trees of hyperbolic components.
The aim of these lectures is the study of bifurcations within holomorphic families of polynomials or rational maps by mean of ergodic and pluripotential theoretic tools.
We study holomorphic families of polynomial-like maps depending on a parameter s. We prove that the partial sums of largest Lyapunov exponents are plurisubharmonic functions of s. We also study their continuity and introduce the bifurcation locus as the support of bifurcation currents.
We study the bifurcation loci of quadratic (and unicritical) polynomials and exponential maps. We outline a proof that the exponential bifurcation locus is connected; this is an analog to Douady and Hubbard's celebrated theorem that (the boundary of) the Mandelbrot set is connected. For these parameter spaces, a fundamental conjecture is that hyperbolic dynamics is dense. For quadratic polynomials, this would follow from the famous stronger conjecture that the bifurcation locus (or equivalently the Mandelbrot set) is locally connected. It turns out that a formally slightly weaker statement is …
The moduli space $\mathcal{M}_d$ of degree $d\geq2$ rational maps can naturally be endowed with a measure $μ_\mathrm{bif}$ detecting maximal bifurcations, called the bifurcation measure. We prove that the support of the bifurcation measure $μ_\mathrm{bif}$ has positive Lebesgue measure. To do so, we establish a general sufficient condition for the conjugacy class of a rational map to belong to the support of $μ_\mathrm{bif}$ and we exhibit a large set of Collet-Eckmann rational maps which satisfy this condition. As a consequence, we get a set of Collet-Eckmann rational maps of positive Lebesgu…
We give a complete combinatorial description of the bifurcation structure in the space of exponential maps $z\mapsto\exp(z)+κ$. This combinatorial structure is the basis for a number of important results about exponential parameter space. These include the fact that every hyperbolic component has connected boundary, a classification of escaping parameters, and the fact that all dynamic and parameter rays at periodic addresses land.
Bifurcations of the $A_{n}$ type in Arnold's classification, in non-autonomous $p$-periodic difference equations generated by parameter depending families with $p$ maps, are studied. It is proved that the conditions of degeneracy, non-degeneracy and unfolding are invariant relative to cyclic order of compositions for any natural number $n$. The main tool for the proofs is local topological conjugacy. Invariance results are essential to the proper definition of the bifurcations $A_{n}$, and lower codimension bifurcations associated, using all the possible cyclic compositions of the fiber famili…
We study bifurcations of cubic homoclinic tangencies in two-dimensional symplectic maps. We distinguish two types of cubic homoclinic tangencies, and each type gives different first return maps derived to diverse conservative cubic Hénon maps with quite different bifurcation diagrams. In this way, we establish the structure of bifurcations of periodic orbits in two parameter general unfoldings generalizing to the conservative case the results previously obtained for the dissipative case. We also consider the problem of 1:4 resonance for the conservative cubic Hénon maps.
Homeomorphisms allowing us to prove topological equivalences between one-parameter families of maps undergoing the same bifurcation are constructed in this paper. This provides a solution for a classical problem in bifurcation theory that was set out three decades ago and remained unexpectedly unpublished until now
We prove that given any $θ_1,\ldots,θ_{2d-2}\in \R\setminus\Z$, the support of the bifurcation measure of the moduli space of degree $d$ rational maps coincides with the closure of classes of maps having $2d-2$ neutral cycles of respective multipliers $e^{2iπθ_1},\ldots,e^{2iπθ_{2d-2}}$. To this end, we generalize a famous result of McMullen, proving that homeomorphic copies of $(\partial \Mand)^{k}$ are dense in the support of the $k^{th}$-bifurcation current $T^k_\bif$ in general families of rational maps, where $\Mand$ is the Mandelbrot set. As a consequence, we also get sharp dimension est…
We strengthen the standard bifurcation theorems for saddle-node, transcritical, pitchfork, and period-doubling bifurcations of maps. Our new formulation involves adding one or two extra terms to the standard truncated normal forms with coefficients determined by algebraic equations. These extended normal forms are differentiably conjugate to the original maps on basins of attraction and repulsion of fixed points or periodic orbits. This reflects common assumptions about the additional information in normal forms despite standard bifurcation theorems being formulated only in terms of topologica…
We study bifurcations of non-orientable area-preserving maps with quadratic homoclinic tangencies. We study the case when the maps are given on non-orientable two-dimensional surfaces. We consider one and two parameter general unfoldings and establish results related to the emergence of elliptic periodic orbits.
In the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_d$ of degree $d$ rational maps, the bifurcation locus is the support of a closed $(1,1)$ positive current $T_\bif$ which is called the bifurcation current. This current gives rise to a measure $μ_\bif:=(T_\bif)^{2d-2}$ whose support is the seat of strong bifurcations. Our main result says that $\supp(μ_\bif)$ has maximal Hausdorff dimension $2(2d-2)$. As a consequence, the set of degree $d$ rational maps having $2d-2$ distinct neutral cycles is dense in a set of full Hausdorff dimension.
We study bifurcations of area-preserving maps, both orientable (symplectic) and non-orientable, with quadratic homoclinic tangencies. We consider one and two parameter general unfoldings and establish results related to the appearance of elliptic periodic orbits. In particular, we find conditions for such maps to have infinitely many generic (KAM-stable) elliptic periodic orbits of all successive periods starting at some number.
We describe the behaviour at infinity of the bifurcation current in the moduli space of quadratic rational maps. To this purpose, we extend it to some closed, positive (1, 1)-current on a two-dimensional complex projective space and then compute the Lelong numbers and the self-intersection of the extended current.
We review recent results that lead to a very precise understanding of the dynamics of typical unimodal maps from the statistical point of view. We also describe the (generalized) renormalization approach to the study of the statistical properties of typical unimodal maps.
We show the existence of open sets of bifurcations near Latt{è}s maps of sufficiently high degree. In particular, every Latt{è}s map has an iterate which is in the closure of the interior of the bifurcation locus. To show this, we design a method to intersect the limit set of some particular type of IFS with a well-oriented curve. Then, we show that a Latt{è}s map of sufficiently high degree can be perturbed to exhibit this geometry.
Resonance tongues are mode-locking regions of parameter space in which stable periodic solutions occur; they commonly occur, for example, near Neimark-Sacker bifurcations. For piecewise-smooth, continuous maps these tongues typically have a distinctive lens-chain (or sausage) shape in two-parameter bifurcation diagrams. We give a symbolic description of a class of "rotational" periodic solutions that display lens-chain structures for a general $N$-dimensional map. We then unfold the codimension-two, shrinking point bifurcation, where the tongues have zero width. A number of codimension-one bif…
Mode-locking regions (resonance tongues) formed by border-collision bifurcations of piecewise-smooth, continuous maps commonly exhibit a distinctive sausage-like geometry with pinch points called "shrinking points". In this paper we extend our unfolding of the piecewise-linear case [{\em Nonlinearity}, 22(5):1123-1144, 2009] to show how shrinking points are destroyed by nonlinearity. We obtain a codimension-three unfolding of this shrinking point bifurcation for $N$-dimensional maps. We show that the destruction of the shrinking points generically occurs by the creation of a curve of saddle-no…
We consider the conservative Hénon family at the period-doubling bifurcation of its fixed point and demonstrate that the separatrices of the fixed saddle point nearing the bifurcation split exponentially: given that $λ_+$ is the smaller of the eigenvalues of the saddle point, the angle between the separatrices along the homoclinic orbit satisfies $$\sin α= O(e^{-{π^2 \over \log |λ_+|}})+ O\left( e^{-2 (1-κ) {π^2 \over \log |λ_+|}} \right),$$ for any positive $κ<1$.
We estimate harmonic scalings in the parameter space of a one-parameter family of critical circle maps. These estimates lead to the conclusion that the Hausdorff dimension of the complement of the frequency-locking set is less than $1$ but not less than $1/3$. Moreover, the rotation number is a Hölder continuous function of the parameter.
We study critical orbits and bifurcations within the moduli space of quadratic rational maps on $\mathbb{P}^1$. We focus on the family of curves, $Per_1(λ)$ for $λ$ in $\mathbb{C}$, defined by the condition that each $f\in Per_1(λ)$ has a fixed point of multiplier $λ$. We prove that the curve $Per_1(λ)$ contains infinitely many postcritically-finite maps if and only if $λ= 0$; addressing a special case of [BD2, Conjecture 1.4]. We also show that the two critical points of a map $f$ define distinct bifurcation measures along $Per_1(λ)$.
From two-dimensional continuous maps to one-dimensional discontinuous maps: a novel reduction explaining complex bifurcation structures in piecewise-linear families of maps
In this paper two important aspects related to Caputo fractional-order discrete variant of a class of maps defined on the complex plane, are analytically and numerically revealed: attractors symmetry-broken induced by the fractional-order and the sensible problem of determining the right bifurcation diagram of discrete systems of fractional-order. It is proved that maps of integer order with dihedral symmetry or cycle symmetry loose their symmetry once they are transformed in fractional-order maps. Also, it is conjectured that, contrarily to integer-order maps, determining the bifurcation diag…
Numerical computations of bifurcation maps for one dimensional maps show patterns (regular jumps in point density) in the zones of chaotic behaviour. In this work, empiric formulas are given for these patterns for an entire class of maps.
We consider the bifurcation structure of one-parameter families of unimodal maps whose differentiability is only $C^1$. The structure of its bifurcation diagram can be a very wild one in such case. However we prove that in a certain topological sense, the structure is the same as that of the standard family of quadratic polynomials. In the case of families of polynomials, irreducible component of the bifurcation diagram can be defined naturally by dividing by the polynomials corresponding to lower periods. We show that such a irreducible component can be defined even if the maps and the family…
We propose an extension of the one dimensional (doubling) renormalization operator to the case of maps on the cylinder. The kind of maps considered are commonly referred as quasi-periodic forced one dimensional maps. We prove that the fixed point of the one dimensional renormalization operator extends to a fixed point of the quasi-periodic forced renormalization operator. We also prove that the operator is differentiable around the fixed point and we study its derivative. Then we consider a two parametric family of quasi-periodically forced maps which is a unimodal one dimensional map with a f…
We study one-parameter families of quasi-periodically forced monotone interval maps and provide sufficient conditions for the existence of a parameter at which the respective system possesses a non-uniformly hyperbolic attractor. This is equivalent to the existence of a sink-source orbit, that is, an orbit with positive Lyapunov exponent both forwards and backwards in time. The attractor itself is a non-continuous invariant graph with negative Lyapunov exponent, often referred to as "SNA". In contrast to former results in this direction, our conditions are C^2-open in the fibre maps. By applyi…
Piecewise linear recurrent neural networks (PLRNNs) form the basis of many successful machine learning applications for time series prediction and dynamical systems identification, but rigorous mathematical analysis of their dynamics and properties is lagging behind. Here we contribute to this topic by investigating the existence of n-cycles $(n\geq 3)$ and border-collision bifurcations in a class of n-dimensional piecewise linear continuous maps which have the general form of a PLRNN. This is particularly important as for one-dimensional maps the existence of 3-cycles implies chaos. It is sho…
It was established in 2006 that bifurcations of three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with a homoclinic tangency to a saddle-focus fixed point with the Jacobian equal to 1 can lead to Lorenz-like strange attractors. In the present paper we prove an analogous result for three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with a homoclinic tangency to a saddle fixed point with the Jacobian equal to 1, provided the quadratic homoclinic tangency under consideration is non-simple.
Bifurcation loci in the moduli space of degree $d$ rational maps are shaped by the hypersurfaces defined by the existence of a cycle of period $n$ and multiplier 0 or $e^{iθ}$. Using potential-theoretic arguments, we establish two equidistribution properties for these hypersurfaces with respect to the bifurcation current. To this purpose we first establish approximation formulas for the Lyapunov function. In degree $d=2$, this allows us to build holomorphic motions and show that the bifurcation locus has a lamination structure in the regions where an attracting basin of fixed period exists.
In this paper we are concerned with quasi-periodic forced one dimensional maps. We consider a two parametric family of quasi-periodically forced maps such that the one dimensional map (before forcing) is unimodal and it has a full cascade of period doubling bifurcations. Between one period doubling and the next one it is known that there exist a parameter value where the $2^n$-periodic orbit is superatracting. In a previous work we proposed an extension of the one-dimensional (doubling) renormalization operator to the quasi-periodic case. We proved that, if the family satisfies suitable hypoth…
We effect a multifractal analysis for a strongly dissipative Hénon-like map at the first bifurcation parameter at which the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of tangencies inside the limit set. We decompose the set of non wandering points on the unstable manifold into level sets of Birkhoff averages of continuous functions, and derive a formula for the Hausdorff dimension of the level sets in terms of the entropy and unstable Lyapunov exponent of invariant probability measures.
The regular structures of a generic 4D symplectic map with a mixed phase space are organized by one-parameter families of elliptic 1D-tori. Such families show prominent bends, gaps, and new branches. We explain these features in terms of bifurcations of the families when crossing a resonance. For these bifurcations no external parameter has to be varied. Instead, the longitudinal frequency, which varies along the family, plays the role of the bifurcation parameter. As an example we study two coupled standard maps by visualizing the elliptic and hyperbolic 1D-tori in a 3D phase-space slice, loc…
Lorenz attractors play an important role in the modern theory of dynamical systems. The reason is that they are robust, i.e. preserve their chaotic properties under various kinds of perturbations. This means that such attractors can exist in applied models and be observed in experiments. It is known that discrete Lorenz attractors can appear in local and global bifurcations of multidimensional diffeomorphisms. However, to date, only partial cases were investigated. In this paper bifurcations of homoclinic and heteroclinic cycles with quadratic tangencies of invariant manifolds are studied. A f…
This survey article is concerned with the study of bifurcations of piecewise-smooth maps. We review the literature in circle maps and quasi-contractions and provide paths through this literature to prove sufficient conditions for the occurrence of two types of bifurcation scenarios involving rich dynamics. The first scenario consists of the appearance of periodic orbits whose symbolic sequences and "rotation" numbers follow a Farey tree structure; the periods of the periodic orbits are given by consecutive addition. This is called the {\em period adding} bifurcation, and its proof relies on re…
We study several families of planar quadratic diffeomorphisms near a Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation. For each family, the associate bifurcation diagram can be deduced from the interpolating flow. However, a zone of chaos confined between two lines of homoclinic bifurcation that are exponentially close to one-another is observed. The goal of this paper is to test numerically an accurate asymptotic expansion for the width of this chaotic zone for different families.
The local zero structure of a smooth map may qualitatively change, when the map is subjected to small perturbations. The changes may include births and/or deaths of zeros. The qualitative properties are defined as the invariances of an appropriate equivalence relation. The occurrence of a qualitative change in the zero structures is called a bifurcation and the map is named a singularity. The local bifurcation analysis of singularities has been extensively studied in singularity theory and many powerful algebraic tools have been developed for their study. However, there does not exist any symb…
For a strongly dissipative Hénon-like map at the first bifurcation parameter at which the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of tangencies inside the limit set, we effect a multifractal analysis, i.e., decompose the set of non wandering points on the unstable manifold into level sets of an unstable Lyapunov exponent, and give a partial description of the Lyapunov spectrum which encodes this decomposition. We derive a formula for the Hausdorff dimension of the level sets in terms of the entropy and unstable Lyapunov exponent of invariant probability measures, and show the conti…
We study the 1:4 resonance for the conservative cubic Hénon maps $\mathbf{C}_\pm$ with positive and negative cubic term. These maps show up different bifurcation structures both for fixed points with eigenvalues $\pm i$ and for 4-periodic orbits. While for $\mathbf{C}_-$ the 1:4 resonance unfolding has the so-called Arnold degeneracy (the first Birkhoff twist coefficient equals (in absolute value) to the first resonant term coefficient), the map $\mathbf{C}_+$ has a different type of degeneracy because the resonant term can vanish. In the last case, non-symmetric points are created and destroy…
We develop a thermodynamic formalism for a strongly dissipative Hénon-like map at the first bifurcation parameter at which the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of tangencies inside the limit set. For any $t\in\mathbb R$ we prove the existence of an invariant Borel probability measure which minimizes the free energy associated with a non continuous geometric potential $-t\log J^u$, where $J^u$ denotes the Jacobian in the unstable direction. Under a mild condition, we show that any accumulation point of these measures as $t\to+\infty$ minimizes the unstable Lyapunov exponent. …
We study bifurcation mechanisms for the appearance of hyperchaotic attractors in three-dimensional diffeomorphisms, i.e., such attractors whose orbits have two positive Lyapunov exponents in numerical experiments. In order to possess this property periodic orbits belonging to the attractor should have two-dimensional unstable invariant manifolds. For realization of this possibility, we propose several bifurcation scenarios that include cascades of both supercritical period-doubling bifurcations with saddle periodic orbits and supercritical Neimark-Sacker bifurcations with stable periodic orbit…
This article is meant as a mathematical appendix or comment on [BT]. We first consider the notion of transcritical bifurcations of fixed points of general area-preserving maps, and then adress some questions related to [BT] on bifurcation in Poincaré maps of 2-dimensional Hamiltonian systems. For Hamitonian systems with 3/2 degrees of freedom close to nonlinear integrable and for symplectic maps of the cylinder, bifurcations in degenerate resonance zones are discussed.
We study bifurcations of invariant graphs in skew product dynamical systems driven by hyperbolic surface maps T like Anosov surface diffeomorphisms or baker maps and with one-dimensional concave fibre maps under multiplicative forcing when the forcing is scaled by a parameter r=e^{-t}. For a range of parameters two invariant graphs (a trivial and a non-trivial one) coexist, and we use thermodynamic formalism to characterize the parameter dependence of the Hausdorff and packing dimension of the set of points where both graphs coincide. As a corollary we characterize the parameter dependence of …
We give an explicit family of polynomial maps called center unstable Hénon-like maps and prove that they exhibits blenders for some parametervalues. Using this family, we also prove the occurrence of blenders near certain non-transverse heterodimensional cycles under high regularity assumptions. The proof involves a renormalization scheme along heteroclinic orbits. We also investigate the connection between the blender and the original heterodimensional cycle.
We treat a problem at the interface of dynamical systems and equilibrium statistical physics. It is well-known that the geometric pressure function $$t\in\mathbb R\mapsto \sup_μ\left\{h_μ(T_2)-t\int\log |dT_2(x)|dμ(x)\right\}$$ of the Chebyshev quadratic map $T_2(x)=1-2x^2$ $(x\in\mathbb R)$ is not differentiable at $t=-1$. We show that this phase transition can be "removed", by an arbitrarily small singular perturbation of the map $T_2$ into Hénon-like diffeomorphisms. A proof of this result relies on an elaboration of the well-known inducing techniques adapted to Hénon-like dynamics near the…
