In two 1966 papers, Jacques Tits gave a construction of exceptional Lie algebras (hence implicitly exceptional algebraic groups) and a classification of possible indexes of simple algebraic groups. For the special case of his construction that gives groups of type E6, we connect the two papers by answering the question: Given an Albert algebra A and a separable quadratic field extension K, what is the index of the resulting algebraic group?
Any group of type ${\rm F}_4$ is obtained as the automorphism group of an Albert algebra. We prove that such a group is $R$-trivial whenever the Albert algebra is obtained from the first Tits construction. Our proof uses cohomological techniques and the corresponding result on the structure group of such Albert algebras.
This paper is a short survey on four basic questions on Artin-Tits groups: the torsion, the center, the word problem, and the cohomology ($K(π,1)$ problem). It is also an opportunity to prove three new results concerning these questions: (1) if all free of infinity Artin-Tits groups are torsion free, then all Artin-Tits groups will be torsion free; (2) If all free of infinity irreducible non-spherical type Artin-Tits groups have a trivial center then all irreducible non-spherical type Artin-Tits groups will have a trivial center; (3) if all free of infinity Artin-Tits groups have solutions to …
Let $G=G_1\ast\dots\ast G_k\ast F$ be a countable group which splits as a free product, where all groups $G_i$ are freely indecomposable and not isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}$, and $F$ is a finitely generated free group. If for all $i\in\{1,\dots,k\}$, both $G_i$ and its outer automorphism group $\text{Out}(G_i)$ satisfy the Tits alternative, then $\text{Out}(G)$ satisfies the Tits alternative. As an application, we prove that the Tits alternative holds for outer automorphism groups of right-angled Artin groups, and of torsion-free groups that are hyperbolic relative to a finite family of virtuall…
A conjecture of Dehornoy claims that, given a presentation of an Artin-Tits group, every word that represents the identity can be transformed into the trivial word using the braid relations, together with certain rules (between pairs of words that are not both positive) that can be derived directly from the braid relations, as well as free reduction, but without introducing trivial factors $ss^{-1} $ or $s^{-1} s$. This conjecture is known to be true for Artin-Tits groups of spherical type or of FC type. We prove the conjecture for Artin--Tits groups of sufficiently large type.
We prove that the structure group of any Albert algebra over an arbitrary field is $R$-trivial. This implies the Tits-Weiss conjecture for Albert algebras and the Kneser-Tits conjecture for isotropic groups of type $\mathrm{E}_{7,1}^{78}, \mathrm{E}_{8,2}^{78}$. As a further corollary, we show that some standard conjectures on the groups of $R$-equivalence classes in algebraic groups and the norm principle are true for strongly inner forms of type $^1\mathrm{E}_6$.
Seeking for a converse to a well-known theorem by Borel-Tits, we address the question whether the group of rational points G(k) of an anisotropic reductive k-group may admit a split spherical BN-pair. We show that if k is a perfect field or a local field, then such a BN-pair must be virtually trivial. We also consider arbitrary compact groups and show that the only abstract BN-pairs they can admit are spherical, and even virtually trivial provided they are split.
We conjecture that the word problem of Artin-Tits groups can be solved without introducing trivial factors ss^{-1} or s^{-1}s. Here we make this statement precise and explain how it can be seen as a weak form of hyperbolicity. We prove the conjecture in the case of Artin-Tits groups of type FC, and we discuss various possible approaches for further extensions, in particular a syntactic argument that works at least in the right-angled case.
The so-called Tits class, associated to an adjoint absolutely almost simple algebraic group, provides a cohomological obstruction for this group to admit an outer automorphism. If the group has inner type, this obstruction is the only one. In this paper, we prove this is not the case for classical groups of outer type, except for groups of type $^2\mathsf{A}_n$ with $n$ even, or $n=5$. More precisely, we prove a descent theorem for exponent $2$ and degree $6$ algebras with unitary involution, which shows that their automorphism groups have outer automorphisms. In all other relevant classical t…
We prove the Tits-Weiss conjecture for Albert division algebras over fields of arbitrary characteristics in the affirmative. The conjecture predicts that every norm similarity of an Albert division algebra is a product of a scalar homothety and $U$-operators. This conjecture is equivalent to the Kneser-Tits conjecture for simple, simply connected algebraic groups with Tits index $E^{78}_{8,2}$. We prove that a simple, simply connected algebraic group with Tits index $E_{8,2}^{78}$ or $E_{7,1}^{78}$, defined over a field of arbitrary characteristic, is $R$-trivial, in the sense of Manin, thereb…
The main aim of this paper is to prove $R$-triviality for simple, simply connected algebraic groups with Tits index $E_{8,2}^{78}$ or $E_{7,1}^{78}$, defined over a field $k$ of arbitrary characteristic. Let $G$ be such a group. We prove that there exists a quadratic extension $K$ of $k$ such that $G$ is $R$-trivial over $K$, i.e., for any extension $F$ of $K$, $G(F)/R=\{1\}$, where $G(F)/R$ denotes the group of $R$-equivalence classes in $G(F)$, in the sense of Manin (see \cite{M}). As a consequence, it follows that the variety $G$ is retract $K$-rational and that the Kneser-Tits conjecture h…
We prove: (1) The group of multipliers of similitudes of a 12-dimensional anisotropic quadratic form over a field K with trivial discriminant and split Clifford invariant is generated by norms from quadratic extensions E/K such that q_E is hyperbolic. (2) If G is the group of K-rational points of an absolutely simple algebraic group whose Tits index is E_{8,2}^{66}, then G is generated by its root groups, as predicted by the Kneser-Tits conjecture.
The Tits core G^+ of a totally disconnected locally compact group G is defined as the abstract subgroup generated by the closures of the contraction groups of all its elements. We show that a dense subgroup is normalised by the Tits core if and only if it contains it. It follows that every dense subnormal subgroup contains the Tits core. In particular, if G is topologically simple, then the Tits core is abstractly simple, and if G^+ is non-trivial then it is the unique minimal dense normal subgroup. The proofs are based on the fact, of independent interest, that the map which associates to an …
We prove that an Artin-Tits group of type $\tilde C$ is the group of fractions of a Garside monoid, analogous to the known dual monoids associated with Artin-Tits groups of spherical type and obtained by the "generated group" method. This answers, in this particular case, a general question on Artin-Tits groups, gives a new presentation of an Artin-Tits group of type $\tilde C$, and has consequences for the word problem, the computation of some centralizers or the triviality of the center. A key point of the proof is to show that this group is a group of fixed points in an Artin-Tits group of …
In this note we show that many subgroups of mapping class groups of infinite-type surfaces without boundary have trivial centers, including all normal subgroups. Using similar techniques, we show that every nontrivial normal subgroup of a big mapping class group contains a nonabelian free group. In contrast, we show that no big mapping class group satisfies the strong Tits alternative enjoyed by finite-type mapping class groups. We also give examples of big mapping class groups that fail to satisfy even the classical Tits alternative and give a proof that every countable group appears as a sub…
We extend (scheme-theoretic) Bruhat-Tits theory to quasi-reductive groups i.e. with trivial split unipotent radical over discretely valued henselian non-archimedean fields $K$, whose ring of integers is excellent and residue field is perfect, building on Bruhat-Tits I et II and the classification of pseudo-reductive groups by Conrad-Gabber-Prasad. The buildings had been constructed previously by Solleveld in a different manner, but they ultimately coincide with ours. We were motivated by the geometry of affine Grassmannians and give some applications at the end (compare also with previously su…
We study subgroups and quotients of outer automorphism groups of right-angled Artin groups (RAAGs). We prove that for all RAAGS, the outer automorphism group is residually finite and, for a large class of RAAGs, it satisfies the Tits alternative. We also investigate which of these automorphism groups contain non-abelian solvable subgroups.

We show that the outer automorphism groups of graph products of finitely generated abelian groups satisfy the Tits alternative, are residually finite, their so-called Torelli subgroups are finitely generated, and they satisfy a dichotomy between being virtually nilpotent and containing a non-abelian free subgroup that is determined by a graphical condition on the underlying labelled graph. Graph products of finitely generated abelian groups simultaneously generalize right-angled Artin groups (RAAGs) and right-angled Coxter groups (RACGs), providing a common framework for studying these groups.…
It is known that simple algebraic groups of type $F_4$ defined over a field $k$ are precisely the full automorphism groups of Albert algebras over $k$. We explore $R$-triviality for the group $\text{\bf Aut}(A)$ when $A$ is an Albert algebra. In this paper, we consider the case when $A$ is an Albert division algebra, that arises from the first Tits construction. We prove that $\text{\bf Aut}(A)$ is $R$-trivial, in the sense of Manin.
A celebrated theorem of Curtis and Tits on groups with finite BN-pair shows that roughly speaking these groups are determined by their local structure. This result was later extended to Kac-Moody groups by P.~Abramenko and B.~Mühlherr. Their theorem states that a Kac-Moody group $G$ is the universal completion of an amalgam of rank two (Levi) subgroups, as they are arranged inside $G$ itself. Taking this result as a starting point, we define a Curtis-Tits structure over a given diagram to be an amalgam of groups such that the sub-amalgam corresponding to a two-vertex sub-diagram is the Curtis-…
We prove, for any infinite field k, that any virtually trivial split spherical BN-pair in the group G(k) of k-rational points of a reductive k-group G is already trivial. We then inspect the case when G is k-anisotropic and show that in many situations G(k) admits no non-trivial split spherical BN-pairs. This improves results and contributes to a conjecture of Caprace and Marquis, which can be viewed as a converse to a well-known result of Borel and Tits.
Let $Γ$ be a crystallographic group of dimension $n,$ i.e. a discrete, cocompact subgroup of $\operatorname{Isom}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ = $O(n)\ltimes\mathbb{R}^n.$ For any $n\geq 2,$ we construct a crystallographic group with a trivial center and a trivial outer automorphism group.
We study the outer automorphism group of a right-angled Artin group A_G in the case where the defining graph G is connected and triangle-free. We give an algebraic description of Out(A_G) in terms of maximal join subgraphs in G and prove that the Tits' alternative holds for Out(A_G). We construct an analogue of outer space for Out(A_G) and prove that it is finite dimensional, contractible, and has a proper action of Out(A_G). We show that Out(A_G) has finite virtual cohomological dimension, give upper and lower bounds on this dimension and construct a spine for outer space realizing the most g…
For any right-angled Artin group, we show that its outer automorphism group contains either a finite-index nilpotent subgroup or a nonabelian free subgroup. This is a weak Tits alternative theorem. We find a criterion on the defining graph that determines which case holds. We also consider some examples of solvable subgroups, including one that is not virtually nilpotent and is embedded in a non-obvious way.
Let $G$ be a finite group, $N(G)$ be the set of conjugacy classes of the group $G$. In the present paper it is proved $G\simeq L$ if $N(G)=N(L)$, where $G$ is a finite group with trivial center and $L$ is a finite simple group of exceptional Lie type or Tits group.
Let R be a semi-local regular ring containing an infinite perfect field, and let K be the field of fractions of R. Let H be a simple algebraic group of type F_4 over R such that H_K is the automorphism group of a 27-dimensional Jordan algebra which is a first Tits construction. If char K is not 2, this means precisely that the f_3 invariant of H_K is trivial. We prove that if an H-torsor is rationally trivial, then it is trivial over R. This result is a particular case of the Grothendieck-Serre conjecture. It continues the recent series of papers by I. Panin, N.Vavilov and the authors, and com…
We show that every non-amenable free product of groups admits free ergodic probability measure preserving actions which have relative property (T) in the sense of S.-Popa \cite[Def. 4.1]{Pop06}. There are uncountably many such actions up to orbit equivalence and von Neumann equivalence, and they may be chosen to be conjugate to any prescribed action when restricted to the free factors. We exhibit also, for every non-amenable free product of groups, free ergodic probability measure preserving actions whose associated equivalence relation has trivial outer automorphisms group. This gives in part…
We determine the precise conditions under which $\mathrm{SOut}(F_n)$, the unique index two subgroup of $\mathrm{Out}(F_n)$, can act non-trivially via outer automorphisms on a RAAG whose defining graph has fewer than $\frac 1 2 \binom n 2 $ vertices. We also show that the outer automorphism group of a RAAG cannot act faithfully via outer automorphisms on a RAAG with a strictly smaller (in number of vertices) defining graph. Along the way we determine the minimal dimensions of non-trivial linear representations of congruence quotients of the integral special linear groups over algebraically clos…
Let $G$ be a Kac-Moody group over a finite field corresponding to a generalized Cartan matrix $A$, as constructed by Tits. It is known that $G$ admits the structure of a BN-pair, and acts on its corresponding building. We study the complete Kac-Moody group $\hat{G}$ which is defined to be the closure of $G$ in the automorphism group of its building. Our main goal is to determine when complete Kac-Moody groups are abstractly simple, that is have no proper non-trivial normal subgroups. Abstract simplicity of $\hat{G}$ was previously known to hold when A is of affine type. We extend this result t…
It is known that a group shift on a polycyclic group is necessarily of finite type. We show that, for trivial reasons, if a group does not satisfy the maximal condition on subgroups, then it admits non-SFT abelian group shifts. In particular, we show that if group is elementarily amenable or satisfies the Tits alternative, then it is virtually polycyclic if and only if all its group shifts are of finite type. Our theorems are minor elaborations of results of Schmidt and Osin.
For a classical group $G$ of type $\mathsf D_n$ over a field $k$ of characteristic different from $2$, we show the existence of a finitely generated regular extension $R$ of $k$ such that $G$ admits outer automorphisms over $R$. Using this result and a construction of groups of type $\mathsf A$ from groups of type $\mathsf D$, we construct new examples of groups of type $^2\mathsf A_n$ with $n\equiv 3\bmod 4$ and the first examples of type $^2\mathsf A_n$ with $n\equiv 1\bmod 4$ $(n\geq 5)$ that are not $R$-trivial, hence not rational (nor stably rational).
Let $G$ be a countable group that splits as a free product of groups of the form $G=G_1\ast\dots\ast G_k\ast F_N$, where $F_N$ is a finitely generated free group. We identify the closure of the outer space $P\mathcal{O}(G,\{G_1,\dots,G_k\})$ for the axes topology with the space of projective minimal, \emph{very small} $(G,\{G_1,\dots,G_k\})$-trees, i.e. trees whose arc stabilizers are either trivial, or cyclic, closed under taking roots, and not conjugate into any of the $G_i$'s, and whose tripod stabilizers are trivial. Its topological dimension is equal to $3N+2k-4$, and the boundary has dim…
In this article we give a sufficient and necessary condition to determine wether or not an element of the free group induces a non-trivial element of the free Burnside group of sufficiently large odd exponent. This criterion can be stated without any knowledge about Burnside groups, in particular about the proof of its infiniteness. Therefore it provides a useful tool that we will use later to study outer automorphisms of Burnside groups. We also state an analogue result for periodic quotients of torsion-free hyperbolic groups.
This is an essentially extended version of the preprint dated by August 2005 (this includes now the varieties of types F_4, E_6 and E_7). Let k be a field of characteristic not 2 and 3. Let G be an exceptional simple algebraic group of type F_4, inner type E_6 or E_7 with trivial Tits algebras. Let X be a projective G-homogeneous variety. If G is of type E_7 we assume in addition that the respective parabolic subgroup is of type P_7. The main result of the paper says that the degree map on the group of zero cycles of X is injective.
We investigate the combinatorial and geometric properties of automorphism groups of universal right-angled Coxeter groups, which are the automorphism groups of free products of copies of Z_2. It is currently an open question as to whether or not these automorphism groups have non-positive curvature. Analogous to Outer Space as a model for Out(F_n), we prove that the natural combinatorial and topological model for their outer automorphism groups can \emph{not} be given an equivariant CAT(0) metric. This is particularly interesting as there are very few non-trivial examples of proving that a mod…
This note gives an elementary proof that the symmetric groups possess only one exceptional symmetry. I am referring to the fact that the outer automorphism group of the symmetric group $S_n$ is trivial unless $n=6$ and the outer automorphism group of $S_6$ has a unique nontrivial element.
We examine the Johnson filtration of the (outer) automorphism group of a finitely generated group. In the case of a free group, we find a surprising result: the first Betti number of the second subgroup in the Johnson filtration is finite. Moreover, the corresponding Alexander invariant is a non-trivial module over the Laurent polynomial ring. In the process, we show that the first resonance variety of the outer Torelli group of a free group is trivial. We also establish a general relationship between the Alexander invariant and its infinitesimal counterpart.
The fundamental group of a finite graph of groups with trivial edge groups is a free product. We are interested in those outer automorphisms of such a free product that permute the conjugacy classes of the vertex groups. We show that in particular cases of interest, such as where vertex groups are themselves finite free products of finite and cyclic groups, given such an outer automorphism, after passing to a positive power, the outer automorphism is represented by a particularly nice kind of relative train track map called a CT. CTs were first introduced by Feighn and Handel for outer automor…
Among the simplest invariants of the sporadic finite simple groups are their outer automorphism groups. For 12 of the 26 possible isomorphism types of a sporadic simple group G, the outer automorphism group Out(G) has order 2, and in the remaining 14 cases, Out(G) is trivial. Historically the suspicion of the existence of a sporadic group was followed in fairly short order by the calculation of a good upper bound on the size of its outer automorphism group. In a few cases establishing the existence of certain outer automorphisms, like the existence of the groups themselves, presented difficult…
We prove that every separable tracial von Neumann algebra embeds into a II$_1$ factor with property (T) which can be taken to have trivial outer automorphism and fundamental groups. We also establish an analogous result for the trivial extension over a non-atomic probability space of every countable p.m.p. equivalence relation. These results are obtained by using the class of wreath-like product groups introduced recently in \cite{CIOS21}.
We prove the following extension of Tits' simplicity theorem. Let $k$ be an infinite field, $G$ an algebraic group defined and quasi-simple over $k,$ and $G(k)$ the group of $k$-rational points of $G.$ Let $G(k)^+$ be the subgroup of $G(k)$ generated by the unipotent radicals of parabolic subgroups of $G$ defined over $k$ and $PG(k)^+$ the quotient of $G(k)^+$ by its center. Then every normalized function of positive type on $PG(k)^+$ which is constant on conjugacy classes is a convex combination of $1_{PG(k)^+}$ and $δ_e.$ As corollary, we obtain that the only ergodic invariant random subgrou…
In this paper we develop the metric theory for the outer space of a free product of groups. This generalizes the theory of the outer space of a free group, and includes its relative versions. The outer space of a free product is made of $G$-trees with possibly non-trivial vertex stabilisers. The strategies are the same as in the classical case, with some technicalities arising from the presence of infinite-valence vertices. In particular, we describe the Lipschitz metric and show how to compute it; we prove the existence of optimal maps; we describe geodesics represented by folding paths. We s…
A graph is Helly if every family of pairwise intersecting combinatorial balls has a nonempty intersection. We show that weak Garside groups of finite type and FC-type Artin groups are Helly, that is, they act geometrically on Helly graphs. In particular, such groups act geometrically on spaces with convex geodesic bicombing, equipping them with a nonpositive-curvature-like structure. That structure has many properties of a CAT(0) structure and, additionally, it has a combinatorial flavor implying biautomaticity. As immediate consequences we obtain new results for FC-type Artin groups (in parti…
We establish new results and introduce new methods in the theory of measurable orbit equivalence, using bounded cohomology of group representations. Our rigidity statements hold for a wide (uncountable) class of groups arising from negative curvature geometry. Amongst our applications are (a) measurable Mostow-type rigidity theorems for products of negatively curved groups; (b) prime factorization results for measure equivalence; (c) superrigidity for orbit equivalence; (d) the first examples of continua of type II_1 equivalence relations with trivial outer automorphism group that are mutually…
Let G be a linear algebraic group defined over a field k. We prove that, under mild assumptions on k and G, there exists a finite k-subgroup S of G such that the natural map H^1(K, S) -> H^1(K, G) is surjective for every field extension K/k. We give several applications of this result in the case where k an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and K/k is finitely generated. In particular, we prove that for every z in H^1(K, G) there exists an abelian field extension L/K such that z_L \in H^1(L, G) is represented by a G-torsor over a projective variety. From this we deduce that z_L…
The outer automorphism group Out(G) of a group G acts on the set of conjugacy classes of elements of G. McCool proved that the stabilizer $Mc(c_1,...,c_n)$ of a finite set of conjugacy classes is finitely presented when G is free. More generally, we consider the group $Mc(H_1,...,H_n)$ of outer automorphisms $Φ$ of G acting trivially on a family of subgroups $H_i$, in the sense that $Φ$ has representatives $α_i$ with $α_i$ equal to the identity on $H_i$. When G is a toral relatively hyperbolic group, we show that these two definitions lead to the same subgroups of Out(G), which we call "McCool…
We show that the complex of free factors of a free group of rank n > 1 is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres of dimension n-2. We also prove that for n > 1, the complement of (unreduced) Outer space in the free splitting complex is homotopy equivalent to the complex of free factor systems and moreover is (n-2)-connected. In addition, we show that for every non-trivial free factor system of a free group, the corresponding relative free splitting complex is contractible.
