In his classic book on symmetric functions, Macdonald describes a remarkable result by Green relating the character theory of the finite general linear group to transition matrices between bases of symmetric functions. This connection allows us to analyze the representation theory of the general linear group via symmetric group combinatorics. Using the work of Ennola, Kawanaka, Lusztig and Srinivasan, this paper describes the analogous setting for the finite unitary group. In particular, we explain the connection between Deligne-Lusztig theory and Ennola's efforts to generalize Green's work, and deduce various representation theoretic results from these results. Applications include finding certain sums of character degrees, and a model of Deligne-Lusztig type for the finite unitary group, which parallels results of Klyachko and Inglis and Saxl for the finite general linear group.
We construct characteristic-free bases and BGG resolutions of unitary simple modules of quiver Hecke algebras and Cherednik algebras. We hence solve and vastly generalise Berkesch-Griffeth-Sam's conjecture, calculate the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of ideals of of certain highly symmetric linear subspace arrangements, and compute Dirac homology of Cherednik algebras.
We show that the modular branching rule (in the sense of Harish-Chandra) on unipotent modules for finite unitary groups is piecewise described by particular connected components of the crystal graph of well-chosen Fock spaces, under favourable conditions. Besides, we give the combinatorial formula to pass from one to the other in the case of modules arising from cuspidal modules of defect 0. This partly proves a recent conjecture of Jacon and the authors.
Let $G = {\rm U}(2m, {\mathbb F}_{q^2})$ be the finite unitary group, with $q$ the power of an odd prime $p$. We prove that the number of irreducible complex characters of $G$ with degree not divisible by $p$ and with Frobenius-Schur indicator -1 is $q^{m-1}$. We also obtain a combinatorial formula for the value of any character of ${\rm U}(n, {\mathbb F}_{q^2})$ at any central element, using the characteristic map of the finite unitary group.
Gelfand-Graev characters and their degenerate counterparts have an important role in the representation theory of finite groups of Lie type. Using a characteristic map to translate the character theory of the finite unitary groups into the language of symmetric functions, we study degenerate Gelfand-Graev characters of the finite unitary group from a combinatorial point of view. In particular, we give the values of Gelfand-Graev characters at arbitrary elements, recover the decomposition multiplicities of degenerate Gelfand-Graev characters in terms of tableau combinatorics, and conclude with …
For a compact surface $S = S_{g,n}$ with $3g + n \geq 4$, we introduce a family of unitary representations of the mapping class group Mod($S$) based on the space of measured foliations. For this family of representations, we show that none of them has almost invariant vectors. As one application, we obtain an inequality concerning the action of Mod($S$) on the Teichmüller space of $S$. Moreover, using the same method plus recent results about weak equivalence, we also give a classification, up to weak equivalence, for the unitary quasi-representations with respect to geometrical subgroups.
We lift the $5$-dimensional characteristic $3$ representation of $M_{11}$ to a complex representation of the amalgam ${\rm GL}(2,3)*_{D_8}S_{4}$, and consider its reduction (mod $p$) for other odd primes.
We discuss some natural maps from a unitary group U(n) to a smaller group U(n-m) (these maps are versions of the Livshic characteristic function). We calculate explicitly the direct images of the Haar measure under some maps. We evaluate some matrix integrals over classical groups and some symmetric spaces (values of the integrals are products of Gamma-functions). These integrals generalize Hua Loo Keng integrals. We construct inverse limits of unitary groups equipped with analogues of the Haar measure and evaluate some integrals over these inverse limits.
In this paper we show, using Deligne-Lusztig theory and Kawanaka's theory of generalised Gelfand-Graev representations, that the decomposition matrix of the special linear and unitary group in non defining characteristic can be made unitriangular with respect to a basic set that is stable under the action of automorphisms.
The Malle-Navarro conjecture relates central block theoretic invariants in two inequalities. In this paper, we prove the conjecture for the 2-blocks and the unipotent 3-blocks of the general linear and unitary groups in non-defining characteristic. Moreover, we show that the conjecture holds for the unipotent 3-blocks of quotients of central subgroups of the special linear and unitary groups.
Let $K$ be a simply connected compact Lie group and $T^{\ast}(K)$ its cotangent bundle. We consider the problem of "quantization commutes with reduction" for the adjoint action of $K$ on $T^{\ast}(K).$ We quantize both $T^{\ast}(K)$ and the reduced phase space using geometric quantization with half-forms. We then construct a geometrically natural map from the space of invariant elements in the quantization of $T^{\ast}(K)$ to the quantization of the reduced phase space. We show that this map is a constant multiple of a unitary map.
Let F be a non-Archimedean local field of characteristic 0, and let D be a finite dimensional central division algebra over F. We prove that any unitary irreducible representation of a Levi subgroup of GL(m,D), with m a positive integer, induces irreducibly to GL(m,D). This ends the classification of the unitary dual of GL(m,D) initiated by Tadic.
We introduce a new notion of rank for unitary representations of semisimple groups over a local field of characteristic zero. The theory is based on Kirillov's method of orbits for nilpotent groups over local fields. When the semisimple group is classical, we prove that the new theory is essentially equivalent to Howe's theory of N-rank.
Using our recent results on eigenvalues of invariants associated to the Lie superalgebra gl(m|n), we use characteristic identities to derive explicit matrix element formulae for all gl(m|n) generators, particularly non-elementary generators, on finite dimensional type 1 unitary irreducible representations. We compare our results with existing works that deal with only subsets of the class of type 1 unitary representations, all of which only present explicit matrix elements for elementary generators. Our work therefore provides an important extension to existing methods, and thus highlights the…
We compute the auto-correlations functions of order $m\ge 1$ for the characteristic polynomials of random matrices from certain subgroups of the unitary groups $\U(2)$ and $\U(3)$ by applying branching rules. These subgroups can be understood as analogs of Sato--Tate groups of $\USp(4)$ in our previous paper. This computation yields symmetric polynomial identities with $m$-variables involving irreducible characters of $\U(m)$ for all $m \ge 1$ in an explicit, uniform way.
In the modular representation theory of finite unitary groups when the characteristic $\ell$ of the ground field is a unitary prime, the $\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}_e$-crystal on level $2$ Fock spaces graphically describes the Harish-Chandra branching of unipotent representations restricted to the tower of unitary groups. However, how to determine the cuspidal support of an arbitrary unipotent representation has remained an open question. We show that for $\ell$ sufficiently large, the $\mathfrak{sl}_\infty$-crystal on the same level $2$ Fock spaces provides the remaining piece of the puzzle for the …
Let $F$ be a local non-Archimedean field of characteristic zero with a finite residue field. Based on Tadić's classification of the unitary dual of $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}(F)$, we classify irreducible unitary representations of $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}(F)$ that have nonzero linear periods, in terms of Speh representations that have nonzero periods. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a nonzero linear period for a Speh representation.
We propose a relative trace formula approach and state the corresponding fundamental lemma toward the global restriction problem involving Bessel or Fourier-Jacobi periods of unitary groups $\mathrm{U}_n\times\mathrm{U}_m$, extending the work of Jacquet-Rallis for $m=n-1$ (which is a Bessel period). In particular, when $m=0$, we recover a relative trace formula proposed by Flicker concerning Kloosterman/Fourier integrals on quasi-split unitary groups. As evidence for our approach, we prove the fundamental lemma for $\mathrm{U}_n\times\mathrm{U}_n$ in positive characteristics.
We explicitly construct the structure of Jacquet modules of parabolically induced representations of even unitary groups and even general unitary groups over a $p$-adic field $F$ of characteristic different than two. As an application, we obtain a classification of strongly positive discrete series representations of those groups.
The goal of this paper is to show that the cohomology of compact unitary Shimura varieties is concentrated in the middle degree and torsion-free, after localizing at a maximal ideal of the Hecke algebra satisfying a suitable genericity assumption. Along the way, we establish various foundational results on the geometry of the Hodge-Tate period map. In particular, we compare the fibres of the Hodge-Tate period map with Igusa varieties.
Let $G$ be a finite symmetric, general linear, or general unitary group defined over a field of characteristic coprime to $3$. We construct a canonical correspondence between irreducible characters of degree coprime to $3$ of $G$ and those of $N_{G}(P)$, where $P$ is a Sylow $3$-subgroup of $G$. Since our bijections commute with the action of the absolute Galois group over the rationals, we conclude that fields of values of character correspondents are the same.
The distribution of the unipotent modules (in non-defining prime characteristic) of the finite unitary groups into Harish-Chandra series is investigated. We formulate a series of conjectures relating this distribution with the crystal graph of an integrable module for a certain quantum group. Evidence for our conjectures is presented, as well as proofs for some of their consequences for the crystal graphs involved. In the course of our work we also generalize Harish-Chandra theory for some of the finite classical groups, and we introduce their Harish-Chandra branching graphs.
We extend the classical construction of operator colligations and characteristic functions. Consider the group $G$ of finite block unitary matrices of size $α+\infty+...+\infty$ ($k$ times). Consider the subgroup $K=U(\infty)$, which consists of block diagonal unitary matrices (with a block 1 of size $α$ and a matrix $u\in U(\infty)$ repeated $k$ times). It appears that there is a natural multiplication on the conjugacy classes $G//K$. We construct 'spectral data' of conjugacy classes, which visualize the multiplication and are sufficient for a reconstruction of a conjugacy class.
We find all irreducible constituents of the Weil representation of a unitary group $U_m(A)$ of rank $m$ associated to a ramified quadratic extension $A$ of a finite, commutative, local and principal ring $R$ of odd characteristic. We show that this Weil representation is multiplicity free with monomial irreducible constituents. We also find the number of these constituents and describe them in terms of Clifford theory with respect to a congruence subgroup. We find all character degrees in the special case when $R$ is a field.
We investigate the structure of subspaces of a Hilbert space that are invariant under unitary representations of a discrete group. We work with square integrable representations, and we show that they are those for which we can construct an isometry intertwining the representation with the right regular representation, that we call a Helson map. We then characterize invariant subspaces using the Helson map, and provide general characterizations of Riesz and frame sequences of orbits. These results extend to the nonabelian setting several known results for abelian groups. They also extend to co…

A bounded linear operator $T$ on a Hilbert space is said to be homogeneous if $φ(T)$ is unitarily equivalent to $T$ for all $φ$ in the group Möb of bi-holomorphic automorphisms of the unit disc. A projective unitary representation $σ$ of Möb is said to be associated with an operator T if $φ(T)= σ(φ)^\star T σ(φ)$ for all $φ$ in Möb. In this paper, we develop a Möbius equivariant version of the Sz.-Nagy--Foias model theory for completely non-unitary (cnu) contractions. As an application, we prove that if T is a cnu contraction with associated (projective unitary) representation $σ$, then there …
We characterize orthonormal bases, Riesz bases and frames which arise from the action of a countable discrete group $Γ$ on a single element $ψ$ of a given Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. As $Γ$ might not be abelian, this is done in terms of a bracket map taking values in the $L^1$-space associated to the group von Neumann algebra of $Γ$. Our result generalizes recent work for LCA groups. In many cases, the bracket map can be computed in terms of a noncommutative form of the Zak transform.
We establish an explicit Plancherel decomposition for $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)\backslash \mathrm{GL}_n(E)$ where $E/F$ is a quadratic extension of local fields of characteristic zero by making use of a local functional equation for Asai $γ$-factors. We also give two applications of this Plancherel formula: first to the global Ichino-Ikeda conjecture for unitary groups by completing a comparison between local relative characters that was left open by W. Zhang and secondly to the Hiraga-Ichino-Ikeda conjecture on formal degrees in the case of unitary groups.
We prove that "unitary deformation K-theory" takes products of finitely generated groups to coproducts of algebra spectra over ku, the connective K-theory spectrum. Additionally, we give spectral sequences for computing the homotopy groups of the unitary deformation K-theory of a group G and the cofiber of the Bott map in terms of PU(n)-equivariant K-theory and homology of spaces of G-representations.
Let $\mathbf{G}$ be an algebraic group over a local field $\mathbf k$ of characteristic zero. We show that the locally compact group $\mathbf G(\mathbf k)$ consisting of the $\mathbf k$-rational points of $\mathbf G$ is of type I. Moreover, we complete Lipsman's characterization of the groups $\mathbf G$ for which every irreducible unitary representation of $\mathbf G(\mathbf k)$ is a CCR representation and show at the same time that such groups $\mathbf G(\mathbf k)$ are trace class as studied recently by Deitmar and van Dijk.
We present a simple technique to compute moments of derivatives of unitary characteristic polynomials. The first part of the technique relies on an idea of Bump and Gamburd: it uses orthonormality of Schur functions over unitary groups to compute matrix averages of characteristic polynomials. In order to consider derivatives of those polynomials, we here need the added strength of the Generalized Binomial Theorem of Okounkov and Olshanski. This result is very natural as it provides coefficients for the Taylor expansions of Schur functions, in terms of shifted Schur functions. The answer is fin…
