Using Serre's proposed complement to Shih's Theorem, we obtain PSL_2(F_p) as a Galois group over Q for at least 614 new primes p. Under the assumption that rational elliptic curves with odd analytic rank have positive rank, we obtain Galois realizations for 3/8 of the primes not covered by previous results; it would also suffice to assume a certain (plausible, and perhaps tractable) conjecture concerning class numbers of quadratic fields. The key issue is to understand rational points on Atkin-Lehner twists of X_0(N). In an appendix, we explore the existence of local points on these curves.
The present paper deals with Atkin-Lehner theory for Drinfeld modular forms. We provide an equivalent definition of $\mathfrak{p}$-newforms (which makes computations easier) and commutativity results between Hecke operators and Atkin-Lehner involutions. As applications we show a criterion for a direct sum decomposition of cusp forms, we exibit $\mathfrak{p}$-newforms arising from lower levels and we provide $\mathfrak{p}$-adic Drinfeld modular forms of level greater than 1.
Guo and Yang give defining equations for all geometrically hyperelliptic Shimura curves $X_0(D,N)$. In this paper we compute the $\mathbb{Q}$-rational points on the Atkin-Lehner quotients of these curves using a variety of techniques. We also determine which rational points are CM for many of these curves.
Let $D > 546$ be the discriminant of an indefinite rational quaternion algebra. We show that there are infinitely many imaginary quadratic fields $l/\mathbb Q$ such that the twist of the Shimura curve $X^D$ by the main Atkin-Lehner involution $w_D$ and $l/\mathbb Q$ violates the Hasse Principle over $\mathbb Q$.
In this paper we give a method for studying global rational points on certain quotients of Shimura curves by Atkin-Lehner involutions. We obtain explicit conditions on such quotients for rational points to be ``trivial'' (coming from CM points only) and exhibit an explicit infinite family of such quotients satisfying these conditions.
We introduce a higher dimensional Atkin-Lehner theory for Siegel-Parahoric congruence subgroups of $GSp(2g)$. Old Siegel forms are induced by geometric correspondences on Siegel moduli spaces which commute with almost all local Hecke algebras. We also introduce an algorithm to get equations for moduli spaces of Siegel-Parahoric level structures, once we have equations for prime levels and square prime levels over the level one Siegel space. This way we give equations for an infinite tower of Siegel spaces after N. Elkies who did the genus one case.
Let $p$ and $q$ be two distinct prime numbers, and $X^{pq}/w_q$ be the quotient of the Shimura curve of discriminant $pq$ by the Atkin-Lehner involution $w_q$. We describe a way to verify in wide generality a criterion of Parent and Yafaev to prove that if $p$ and $q$ satisfy some explicite congruence conditions, known as the conditions of the non ramified case of Ogg, and if $p$ is large enough compared to $q$, then the quotient $X^{pq}/w_q$ has no rational point, except possibly special points.
We wish to give a new proof of one of the main results of Atkin and Lehner. Their theory depends, among other things, on a theorem characterizing forms in S_k(Gamma_0(N)) whose Fourier coefficients satisfy a certain vanishing condition. Our proof involves rephrasing this vanishing condition in terms of representation theory; this, together with an elementary linear algebra argument, allows us to rewrite the problem as a collection of local problems. Furthermore, the classical phrasing of the theorem makes the resulting local problems trivial; this is in contrast to the method of Casselman, who…
Poonen and Stoll have shown that the reduced Shafarevich-Tate group of a principally polarized abelian variety over a global field can have order twice a square (the odd case) as well as a square (the even case). For a curve over a global field, they give a local diophantine criterion for its jacobian to be even or odd. In this note we use the Cherednik-Drinfeld p-adic uniformization to study the local points and divisors on certain Atkin-Lehner quotients of Shimura curves. We exhibit an explicit family of such quotient curves over the rationals with odd jacobians, with genus going to infinity…
In this article, we settle a part of the Conjecture by Bandini and Valentino (\cite{BV19a}) for $S_{k,l}(Γ_0(T))$ when $\mathrm{dim}\ S_{k,l}(\mathrm{GL}_2(A))\leq 2$. Then, we frame this conjecture for prime, higher levels, and provide some evidence in favour of it. For any square-free level $\mathfrak{n}$, we define oldforms $S_{k,l}^{\mathrm{old}}(Γ_0(\mathfrak{n}))$, newforms $S_{k,l}^{\mathrm{new}}(Γ_0(\mathfrak{n}))$, and investigate their properties. These properties depend on the commutativity of the (partial) Atkin-Lehner operators with the $U_\mathfrak{p}$-operators. Finally, we show…
We show how to construct counter-examples to the Hasse principle over the field of rational numbers on Atkin-Lehner quotients of Shimura curves and on twisted forms of Shimura curves by Atkin-Lehner involutions. A particular example is the quotient of the Shimura curve X attached to the indefinite rational quaternion algebra of discriminant 23*107 by the Atkin-Lehner involution w107. The quadratic twist of X by Q(sqrt{-23}) with respect to this involution is also a counter-example to the Hasse principle over Q.
We use the method of quadratic Chabauty on the quotients $X_0^+(N)$ of modular curves $X_0(N)$ by their Fricke involutions to provably compute all the rational points of these curves for prime levels $N$ of genus four, five, and six. We find that the only such curves with exceptional rational points are of levels $137$ and $311$. In particular there are no exceptional rational points on those curves of genus five and six. More precisely, we determine the rational points on the curves $X_0^+(N)$ for $N=137,173,199,251,311,157,181,227,263,163,197,211,223,269,271,359$.
We give conditions when the fixed points by the partial Atkin-Lehner involutions on $X_0(N)$ are Weierstrass points as an extension of the result by Lehner and Newman \cite{LN}. Furthermore, we complete their result by determining whether the fixed points by the full Atkin-Lehner involutions on $X_0(N)$ are Weierstrass points or not.
We complete the computation of all $\mathbb{Q}$-rational points on all the $64$ maximal Atkin-Lehner quotients $X_0(N)^*$ such that the quotient is hyperelliptic. To achieve this, we use a combination of various methods, namely the classical Chabauty--Coleman, elliptic curve Chabauty, quadratic Chabauty, and the bielliptic quadratic Chabauty method combined with the Mordell-Weil sieve. Additionally, for square-free levels $N$, we classify all $\mathbb{Q}$-rational points as cusps, CM points (including their CM field and $j$-invariants) and exceptional ones. We further indicate how to use this …
We examine the existence of rational divisors on modular curves of $\mathcal{D}$-elliptic sheaves and on Atkin-Lehner quotients of these curves over local fields. Using a criterion of Poonen and Stoll, we show that in infinitely many cases the Tate-Shafarevich groups of the Jacobians of these Atkin-Lehner quotients have non-square orders.
We prove many simultaneous congruences mod 2 for elliptic and Hilbert modular forms among forms with different Atkin--Lehner eigenvalues. The proofs involve the notion of quaternionic $S$-ideal classes and the distribution of Atkin--Lehner signs among newforms.
Given an algebraic curve C/Q having points everywhere locally and endowed with a suitable involution, we show that there exists a positive density family of prime quadratic twists of C violating the Hasse principle. The result applies in particular to w_N-Atkin-Lehner twists of most modular curves X_0(N) and to w_p-Atkin-Lehner twists of certain Shimura curves X^{D+}.
We determine the group structure of the normalizer of $Γ_0(N)$ in $SL_2(\R)$ modulo $Γ_0(N)$. These results correct the Atkin-Lehner statement at the paper Hecke operators of $Γ_0(N)$.
Let V_D be the Shimura curve over \Q attached to the indefinite rational quaternion algebra of discriminant D. In this note we investigate the group of automorphisms of V_D and prove that, in many cases, it is the Atkin-Lehner group. Moreover, we determine the family of bielliptic Shimura curves over \bar \Q and over \Q and we use it to study the set of rational points on V_D over quadratic fields. Finally, we obtain explicit equations of elliptic Atkin-Lehner quotients of V_D.
We first obtain the dimension formulas for the spaces of holomorphic modular forms with character for the Fricke group $Γ_0^+(N)$, then that for $Γ_0^*(N)$ with all Atkin-Lehner involutions added in a particular case.
We use the action of Atkin-Lehner operators to generate a family of reciprocity formulas for newform Dedekind sums. This family of reciprocity formulas provides symmetries which we use to investigate the kernel of these Dedekind sums.
We prove that for $d \in \{ 2,3,5,7,13 \}$ and $K$ a quadratic (or rational) field of discriminant $D$ and Dirichlet character $χ$, if a prime $p$ is large enough compared to $D$, there is a newform $f \in S_2(Γ_0(dp^2))$ with sign $(+1)$ with respect to the Atkin-Lehner involution $w_{p^2}$ such that $L(f \otimes χ,1) \neq 0$. This result is obtained through an estimate of a weighted sum of twists of $L$-functions which generalises a result of Ellenberg. It relies on the approximate functional equation for the $L$-functions $L(f \otimes χ, \cdot)$ and a Petersson trace formula restricted to A…
We determine the automorphism group of the modular curve $X_0^*(N)$, obtained as the quotient of the modular curve $X_0(N)$ by the group of its Atkin-Lehner involutions, for all square-free values of $N$.
Consider a Shimura curve $X^D_0(N)$ over the rational numbers. We determine criteria for the twist by an Atkin-Lehner involution to have points over a local field. As a corollary we give a new proof of the theorem of Jordan-Livné on $\mathbf{Q}_p$ points when $p\mid D$ and for the first time give criteria for $\mathbf{Q}_p$ points when $p\mid N$. We also give congruence conditions for roots modulo $p$ of Hilbert class polynomials.
Let X_0+(N) be the Atkin-Lehner quotient of the modular curve X_0(N) associated to the Fricke involution wN. Assume N > 3 prime and endow the real locus X+ 0 (N)(R) with the real topology. In this paper we revisit a special case of result due to Ogg on the connected components of X_0+(N)(R). Then we obtain a formula for the homology class of each connected component of X_0+(N)(R) in terms of Manin symbols.
Let $p(n)$ be the ordinary partition function. In the 1960s Atkin found a number of examples of congruences of the form $p( Q^3 \ell n+β)\equiv0\pmod\ell$ where $\ell$ and $Q$ are prime and $5\leq \ell\leq 31$; these lie in two natural families distinguished by the square class of $1-24β\pmod\ell$. In recent decades much work has been done to understand congruences of the form $p(Q^m\ell n+β)\equiv 0\pmod\ell$. It is now known that there are many such congruences when $m\geq 4$, that such congruences are scarce (if they exist at all) when $m=1, 2$, and that for $m=0$ such congruences exist onl…
We compute the rational points on the Atkin-Lehner quotient $X^+_0(125)$ using the quadratic Chabauty method. Our work completes the study of exceptional rational points on the curves $X^+_0(N)$ of genus between 2 and 6. Together with the work of several authors, this completes the proof of a conjecture of Galbraith.
Let $p$ be an odd prime number and let $X_0^+(p)$ be the quotient of the classical modular curve $X_0(p)$ by the action of the Atkin-Lehner operator $w_p$. In this paper we show how to compute explicit equations for the canonical model of $X_0^+(p)$. Then we show how to compute the modular parametrization, when it exists, from $X_0^+(p)$ to an isogeny factor $E$ of dimension 1 of its jacobian $J_0^+(p)$. Finally we show how use this map to determine the rational points on $X_0^+(p)$ up to a large fixed height.
For a fixed odd prime p and a representation ρof the absolute Galois group of Q into the projective group PGL(2,p), we provide the twisted modular curves whose rational points supply the quadratic Q-curves of degree N prime to p that realize ρthrough the Galois action on their p-torsion modules. The modular curve to twist is either the fiber product of the modular curves X_0(N) and X(p) or a certain quotient of Atkin-Lehner type, depending on the value of N mod p. For our purposes, a special care must be taken in fixing rational models for these modular curves and in studying their automorphis…
We present explicit models for Shimura curves X_D and Atkin-Lehner quotients X_D/w_m of them of genus 2. We show that several equations conjectured by Kurihara are correct and compute for them the kernel of Ribet's isogeny J_0(D)^{new} --> J_D between the new part of the Jacobian of the modular curve X_0(D) and the Jacobian of X_D.
In response to a question of B. Poonen, we exhibit for each global field k an algebraic curve over k which violates the Hasse Principle. In fact we can find such examples among Atkin-Lehner twists of certain elliptic modular curves and -- in positive characteristic -- Drinfeld modular curves. Our main tool is a refinement of the "Twist Anti-Hasse Principle" (TAHP). We also use TAHP to construct further Hasse Principle violations, for instance among curves over any number field of any given genus g which is at least 2.
Let C be the image of a canonical embedding C of the Atkin-Lehner quotient X+0(N) associated to the Fricke involution wN. In this note we exhibit some relations among the rational points of C. For each g = 3 (resp. the first g = 4) curve C we found that there are one or more lines (resp. planes) in projectie space whose intersection with C consists entirely of rational Heegner points or the cusp point, where N is prime. We also discuss an explanation of the first non-hyperelliptic exceptional rational point.
We study the automorphisms of modular curves associated to Cartan subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z)$ and certain subgroups of their normalizers. We prove that if $n$ is large enough, all the automorphisms are induced by the ramified covering of the complex upper half-plane. We get new results for non-split curves of prime level $p\ge 13$: the curve $X_{\text{ns}}^+(p)$ has no non-trivial automorphisms, whereas the curve $X_{\text{ns}}(p)$ has exactly one non-trivial automorphism. Moreover, as an immediate consequence of our results we compute the automorphism group of $X_0^*(n)…
Let $F/E$ be a Galois extension of totally real number fields, with Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}(F/E)$. Let $\mathfrak{N}$ be an integral ideal which is $\mathrm{Gal}(F/E)$-invariant, and $k \ge 2$ an integer. In this note, we study the action of $\mathrm{Gal}(F/E)$ on the Hecke orbits of Hilbert newforms of level $\mathfrak{N}$ and weight $k$. We also discuss the geometric counterpart to this action, which is closely related to the notion of abelian varieties potentially of $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type. The two actions have some consequences in relation with Langlands Functoriality. We conclude with an…
We study the finiteness of low degree points on certain modular curves and their Atkin--Lehner quotients, and, as an application, prove the modularity of elliptic curves over all but finitely many totally real fields of degree $5$. On the way, we prove a criterion for the finiteness of rational points of degree $5$ on a curve of large genus over a number field using the results of Abramovich--Harris and Faltings on subvarieties of Jacobians.
We describe how the quadratic Chabauty method may be applied to explicitly determine the set of rational points on modular curves of genus $g>1$ whose Jacobians have Mordell--Weil rank $g$. This extends our previous work on the split Cartan curve of level 13 and allows us to consider modular curves that may have few known rational points or nontrivial local height contributions at primes of bad reduction. We illustrate our algorithms with a number of examples where we determine the set of rational points on several modular curves of genus 2 and 3: this includes Atkin--Lehner quotients $X_0^+(N…
We study the group of automorphisms of Shimura curves $X_0(D, N)$ attached to an Eichler order of square-free level $N$ in an indefinite rational quaternion algebra of discriminant $D>1$. We prove that, when the genus $g$ of the curve is greater than or equal to 2, $\Aut (X_0(D, N))$ is a 2-elementary abelian group which contains the group of Atkin-Lehner involutions $W_0(D, N)$ as a subgroup of index 1 or 2. It is conjectured that $\Aut (X_0(D, N)) = W_0(D, N)$ except for finitely many values of $(D, N)$ and we provide criteria that allow us to show that this is indeed often the case. Our met…
Let X^d(N) be the quadratic twist of the modular curve X_0(N) through the Atkin-Lehner involution w_N and a quadratic extension Q(\sqrt{d})/Q. The points of X^d(N)(Q) are precisely the Q(\sqrt{d})-rational points of X_0(N) that are fixed by σcomposition w_N, where σis the generator of Gal(Q(\sqrt{d})/Q).Ellenberg asked the following question: For which d and N does X^d(N) have rational points over every completion of Q? Given (N,d,p) we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a Q_p-rational point on X^d(N), whenever p is not simultaneously ramified in Q(\sqrt{d}) and Q(\s…
