We introduce a notion of stable spherical variety which includes the spherical varieties under a reductive group $G$ and their flat equivariant degenerations. Given any projective space $\bP$ where $G$ acts linearly, we construct a moduli space for stable spherical varieties over $\bP$, that is, pairs $(X,f)$, where $X$ is a stable spherical variety and $f : X \to \bP$ is a finite equivariant morphism. This space is projective, and its irreducible components are rational. It generalizes the moduli space of pairs $(X,D)$, where $X$ is a stable toric variety and $D$ is an effective ample Cartier divisor on $X$ which contains no orbit. The equivariant automorphism group of $\bP$ acts on our moduli space; the spherical varieties over $\bP$ and their stable limits form only finitely many orbits. A variant of this moduli space gives another view to the compactifications of quotients of thin Schubert cells constructed by Kapranov and Lafforgue.
We give a combinatorial description of all affine spherical varieties with prescribed weight monoid $Γ$. As an application, we obtain a characterization of the irreducible components of Alexeev and Brion's moduli scheme $\mathrm M_Γ$ for such varieties. Moreover, we find several sufficient conditions for $\mathrm M_Γ$ to be irreducible and exhibit several examples where $\mathrm M_Γ$ is reducible. Finally, we provide examples of non-reduced $\mathrm M_Γ$.
The moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties with real structure and with level $N=4m$ structure (with $m \ge 1$) is shown to coincide with the set of real points of a quasi-projective algebraic variety defined over $\mathbb Q$, and to consist of finitely many copies of the quotient of the space $\mathbf{GL}(n, \mathbb R)/\mathbf O(N)$ (of positive definite symmetric matrices) by the principal congruence subgroup of level $N$ in $\mathbf{GL}(n, \mathbb Z).$
We study Alexeev and Brion's moduli scheme $M_Γ$ of affine spherical varieties with weight monoid $Γ$ under the assumption that $Γ$ is free. We describe the tangent space to $M_Γ$ at its `most degenerate point' in terms of the combinatorial invariants of spherical varieties and deduce that the irreducible components of $M_Γ$, equipped with their reduced induced scheme structure, are affine spaces.
We construct the fine moduli space of log abelian varieties with PEL structure, which gives a toroidal compactification of the moduli space of abelian varieties with PEL structure.
A general framework for the reduction of the equations defining classes of spherical varieties to (maybe infinite dimensional) grassmannians is proposed. This is applied to model varieties of type A, B and C; in particular a standard monomial theory for these varieties is presented.
This is a note in which we first review symmetries of moduli spaces of stable meromorphic connections on trivial vector bundles over the Riemann sphere, and next discuss symmetries of their integrable deformations as an application. In the study of the symmetries, a realization of the moduli spaces as quiver varieties is given and plays an essential role.
We develop a moduli theory of algebraic varieties and pairs of non-negative Kodaira dimension. We define stable minimal models and construct their projective coarse moduli spaces under certain natural conditions. This can be applied to a wide range of moduli problems in algebraic geometry.
Using the theory of spherical varieties and especially Frobenius splitting results for symmetric varieties, we give a type independent very short proof of Wahl's conjecture for cominuscule homogeneous spaces for all primes different from 2.
The goal of these lectures is to explain speaker's results on uniqueness properties of spherical varieties. By a uniqueness property we mean the following. Consider some special class of spherical varieties. Define some combinatorial invariants for spherical varieties from this class. The problem is to determine whether this set of invariants specifies a spherical variety in this class uniquely (up to an isomorphism). We are interested in three classes: smooth affine varieties, general affine varieties, and homogeneous spaces.
We suggest a combinatorial criterion for the smoothness of an arbitrary spherical variety using the classification of multiplicity-free spaces, generalizing an earlier result of Camus for spherical varieties of type $A$.
This is an expository article on the recent developments of Hodge theory on moduli spaces of smooth projective varieties with semi-ample canonical line bundles.
We prove that for any e>0, there exists only finitely many e-log terminal spherical Fano varieties of fixed dimension. We also introduce an invariant of a spherical subgroup H in a reductive group G which measures how nice an equivariant Fano compactification G/H there exists.
We describe categories of equivariant vector bundles on certain toroidal spherical varieties in linear algebra terms: vector spaces equipped with filtrations, group and Lie algebra actions, and linear maps preserving these structures.
In this note it is shown that associating to a principally polarized abelian variety its de Rham cohomology defines a faithfully flat morphism of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties in positive characteristics to the moduli space of symplectic $F$-Zips as defined in \cite{MW}.
We prove some fundamental structural results for spherical varieties in arbitrary characteristic. In particular, we study Luna's two types of localization and use it to analyze spherical roots, colors and their interrelation. At the end, we propose a preliminary definition of a p-spherical system.
In this article, we investigate the geometry of reductive group actions on algebraic varieties. Given a connected reductive group $G$, we elaborate on a geometric and combinatorial approach based on Luna-Vust theory to describe every normal $G$-variety with spherical orbits. This description encompasses the classical case of spherical varieties and the theory of $\mathbb{T}$-varieties recently introduced by Altmann, Hausen, and Süss.
We give a short appreciation of Mumford's work on the moduli of varieties by putting it into historical context. By reviewing earlier works we highlight the innovations introduced by Mumford. Then we discuss recent developments whose origins can be traced back to Mumford's ideas.
This paper proves that every projective toric variety is the fine moduli space for stable representations of an appropriate bound quiver. To accomplish this, we study the quiver $Q$ with relations $R$ corresponding to the finite-dimensional algebra $\bigl(\bigoplus_{i=0}^{r} L_i \bigr)$ where $\mathcal{L} := (\mathscr{O}_X,L_1, ...c, L_r)$ is a list of line bundles on a projective toric variety $X$. The quiver $Q$ defines a smooth projective toric variety, called the multilinear series $|\mathcal{L}|$, and a map $X \to |\mathcal{L}|$. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the indu…
We define and study a class of spherical subgroups of a Kac-Moody group. In analogy with the standard theory of spherical varieties, we introduce a combinatorial object associated with such a subgroup, its homogeneous spherical datum, and we prove that it satisfies the same axioms as in the finite-dimensional case. Our main tool is a study of varieties that are spherical under the action of a connected reductive group L, and come equipped with a transitive action of a group containing L as a Levi subgroup.
We describe the moduli stack of Gushel-Mukai varieties as a global quotient stack and its coarse moduli space as the corresponding GIT quotient. The construction is based on a comprehensive study of the relation between this stack and the stack of Lagrangian data; roughly speaking, we show that the former is a generalized root stack of the latter. As an application, we define the period map for Gushel-Mukai varieties and construct some complete nonisotrivial families of smooth Gushel-Mukai varieties. In an appendix, we describe a generalization of the root stack construction used in our approa…
We study the moduli space of abelian threefolds with Iwahori level structure in positive characteristic. We explicitly determine the fibers of the canonical projection to the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties and draw conclusions about the relationship between the Ekedahl-Oort, the Kottwitz-Rapoport and the Newton stratification on these spaces.
The moduli space $\cM_g$ of nonsingular projective curves of genus $g$ is compactified into the moduli $\bcM_g$ of Deligne-Mumford stable curves of genus $g$. We compactify in a similar way the moduli space of abelian varieties by adding some mildly degenerating limits of abelian varieties. A typical case is the moduli space of Hesse cubics. Any Hesse cubic is GIT-stable in the sense that its $\SL(3)$-orbit is closed in the semistable locus, and conversely any GIT-stable planar cubic is one of Hesse cubics. Similarly in arbitrary dimension, the moduli space of abelian varieties is compactified…
In this paper we give a lower bound for the codimension of the Andreotti-Mayer loci in the moduli space of principally polarized complex abelian varieties. We also present a conjecture on this codimension.
Let X be an irreducible affine T-variety. We consider families of affine stable toric T-varieties over X and give a description of the corresponding moduli space as the quotient stack of an open subscheme in a certain toric Hilbert scheme under the action of a torus.
We describe the moduli spaces of morphisms between polarized complex abelian varieties. The discrete invariants, derived from a Poincare' decomposition of morphisms, are the types of polarizations and of lattice homomorphisms occurring in the decomposition. For a given type of morphisms the moduli variety is irreducible, and is obtained from a product of Siegel spaces modulo the action of a discrete group.
Let G be a connected complex reductive group. A well known theorem of I. Losev's says that a smooth affine spherical G-variety X is uniquely determined by its weight monoid, which is the set of irreducible representations of G that occur in the coordinate ring of X. In this paper, we use the combinatorial theory of spherical varieties and a smoothness criterion of R. Camus to characterize the weight monoids of smooth affine spherical varieties.
We give upper and lower bounds for the order of the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle on the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties.
Brion proved that the valuation cone of a complex spherical variety is a fundamental domain for a finite reflection group, called the little Weyl group. The principal goal of this paper is to generalize this fundamental theorem to fields of characteristic unequal to 2. We also prove a weaker version which holds in characteristic 2, as well. Our main tool is a generalization of Akhiezer's classification of spherical rank-1-varieties.
We give upper and lower bounds for the order of the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle on the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties. We also give a generalization to higher genera of the famous formula $12 λ_1=δ$ for genus 1.
This is a survey paper on moduli spaces that have a natural structure of a (possibly incomplete) locally symmetric variety. We outline the Baily-Borel compactification for such varieties and compare it with the compactifications furnished by techniques in algebraic geometry. These differ in general, but we show that a reconciliation is possible by means of a generalization of the Baily-Borel technique for a class of incomplete locally symmetric varieties. The emphasis is here on moduli spaces of varieties other than that of polarized abelian varieties.

This paper surveys some applications of moduli theory to issues concerning the distribution of rational points on algebraic varieties. It will appear on the proceedings of the Fano Conference.
We prove a strengthening of Kollár's Ampleness Lemma and use it to prove that any proper coarse moduli space of stable log-varieties of general type is projective. We also prove subadditivity of log-Kodaira dimension for fiber spaces whose general fiber is of log general type.
We propose two conjectures on a moduli theoretic approach to constructing Lagrangian subvarieties of hyperkähler varieties arising from the Kuznetsov components of cubic fourfolds or Gushel--Mukai fourfolds. Then we verify the conjectures in several cases, recovering classical examples. As a corollary, we confirm a conjecture of O'Grady in several instances on the existence of Lagrangian covering families for hyperkähler varieties.
Let $\mathcal{A}_g$ denote the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g \ge 3.$ In this paper we prove the connectedness of the singular sublocus of $\mathcal{A}_g$ consisting of those abelian varieties which possess an involution different from $-id$.
Given a connected reductive algebraic group $G$ and a finitely generated monoid $Γ$ of dominant weights of $G$, in 2005 Alexeev and Brion constructed a moduli scheme $\mathrm M_Γ$ for multiplicity-free affine $G$-varieties with weight monoid $Γ$. This scheme is equipped with an action of an `adjoint torus' $T_{\mathrm{ad}}$ and has a distinguished $T_{\mathrm{ad}}$-fixed point $X_0$. In this paper, we obtain a complete description of the $T_{\mathrm{ad}}$-module structure in the tangent space of $\mathrm M_Γ$ at $X_0$ for the case where $Γ$ is saturated. Using this description, we prove that t…
We consider the action of the Levi subgroup of a parabolic subgroup that stabilizes a Schubert variety. We show that a smooth Schubert variety is a homogeneous space for a parabolic subgroup, or it has a smooth Schubert divisor. Further, we show that all smooth Schubert varieties in a (partial) flag variety of a rank two simple algebraic group are spherical.
Connected Shimura varieties are the quotients of hermitian symmetric domains by discrete groups defined by congruence conditions. We examine their relation with moduli varieties. (Handbook of Moduli).
We study the moduli space of a product of stable varieties over the field of complex numbers, as defined via the minimal model program. Our main results are: (a) taking products gives a well-defined morphism from the product of moduli spaces of stable varieties to the moduli space of a product of stable varieties, (b) this map is always finite étale, and (c) this map very often is an isomorphism. Our results generalize and complete the work of Van Opstall in dimension 1. The local results rely on a study of the cotangent complex using some derived algebro-geometric methods, while the global on…
The moduli stacks of Calabi-Yau varieties are known to enjoy several hyperbolicity properties. The best results have so far been proven using sophisticated analytic tools such as complex Hodge theory. Although the situation is very different in positive characteristic (e.g. the moduli stack of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension at least 2 contains rational curves), we explain in this note how one can prove many hyperbolicity results by reduction to positive characteristic, relying ultimately on the nonabelian Hodge theory in positive characteristic developed by Ogus and Volog…
In a previous paper we showed that for every polarization on an abelian variety there is a dual polarization on the dual abelian variety. In this note we extend this notion of duality to families of polarized abelian varieties. As a main consequence we obtain an involution on the set of moduli spaces of polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$. In particular, the moduli spaces $\mathcal A_{(d_1,...,d_g)}$ and $\mathcal A_{(d_1,\frac{d_1d_g}{d_{g-1}},...,\frac{d_1d_g}{d_2},d_g)}$ are canonically isomorphic.
We show that the moduli spaces of sheaves on a projective K3 surface are irreducible symplectic varieties, and that the same holds for the fibers of the Albanese map of moduli spaces of sheaves on an Abelian surface.
We study the geometry of some varieties of sums of powers related to the Klein quartic. This allows us to describe the birational geometry of certain moduli spaces of abelian surfaces. In particular we show that the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_2(1,7)^{-}_{sym}$ of $(1,7)$-polarized abelian surfaces with a symmetric theta structure and an odd theta characteristic is unirational by showing that it admits a dominant morphism from a unirational conic bundle.
We study the geometry of a class of $n$-dimensional smooth projective varieties constructed by Schreieder for their noteworthy Hodge-theoretic properties. In particular, we realize Schreieder's surfaces as elliptic modular surfaces and Schreieder's threefolds as one-dimensional families of Picard rank $19$ $K3$ surfaces.
We discuss the geometry of the moduli space of Prym varieties. The article is based on series of lectures given in Bedlewo and Luminy. The first section of the paper contains a detailed historical account of the lives of Friedrich Prym and Friedrich Schottky.
It is a short report for the ICCM2019 Proceedings on recent results obtained with Michael Groechenig and Moritz Kerz concerning special subloci of the Betti moduli space of irreducible complex local systems on complex varieties.
We determine generators for the codimension 1 Chow group of the moduli spaces of genus zero stable maps to flag varieties G/P. In the case of SL flags, we find all relations between our generators, showing that they essentially come from $\bar M_{0,n}$. In addition, we analyze the codimension 2 classes on the moduli spaces of stable maps to Grassmannians and prove a new codimension 2 relation. This will lead to a partial reconstruction theorem for the Grassmannian of 2 planes.
For fixed $k<g$ and a family of polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$ over $\mathbb{R}$, we give a criterion for the density in the parameter space of those abelian varieties over $\mathbb{R}$ containing a $k$-dimensional abelian subvariety over $\mathbb{R}$. As application, we prove density of such a set in the moduli space of polarized real abelian varieties of dimension $g$, and density of real algebraic curves mapping non-trivially to real $k$-dimensional abelian varieties in the moduli space of real algebraic curves as well as in the space of real plane curves. This extends to the …
