In this note we prove that a positive multiple of each even-dimensional integral homology class of a compact symplectic manifold $(M^{2n}, ω)$ can be represented as the difference of the fundamental classes of two symplectic submanifolds in $(M^{2n}, ω)$. We also discuss the realizability of integral homology classes by symplectic surfaces in $(M^{2n}, ω)$.
In this short note, we provide a criterion for DGA-homotopy of augmentations of Chekanov-Eliashberg algebra of disconnected Legendrian submanifolds. We apply the criterion to obtain the extension of geography results of Bourgeois and Galant concerning bilinearized Legendrian contact homology to the case of disconnected Legendrian submanifolds.
This is a translation of an article appeared in Japanese in Suugaku 63 (2011), no. 1, 43-66 (MR2790665) and is a survey of Lagrangian Floer homology which the author studies jointly with Y.-G.Oh, H. Ohta, and K. Ono. It also contains some explanation on its relation to (homological) mirror symmetry.
We establish a new version of Floer homology for monotone Lagrangian submanifolds and apply it to prove the following (generalized) version of Audin's conjecture : if $L$ is an aspherical manifold which admits a monotone Lagrangian embedding in ${\bf C^{n}}$, then its Maslov number equals $2$. We also prove other results on the topology of monotone Lagrangian submanifolds $L\subset M$ of maximal Maslov number under the hypothesis that they are displaceable through a Hamiltonian isotopy.
In this note we study homological cycles in the mirror quintic Calabi-Yau threefold which can be realized by special Lagrangian submanifolds. We have used Picard-Lefschetz theory to establish the monodromy action and to study the orbit of Lagrangian vanishing cycles. For many prime numbers $p$ we can compute the orbit modulo $p$. We conjecture that the orbit in homology with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}$ can be determined by these orbits with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}_p$.
Loose Legendrian n-submanifolds, for n at least 2, were introduced by Murphy and proved to be flexible in the h-principle sense: any two loose Legendrian submanifolds that are formally Legendrian isotopic are also actually Legendrian isotopic. Legendrian contact homology is a Floer theoretic invariant that associates a differential graded algebra (DGA) to a Legendrian submanifold. The DGA of a loose Legendrian submanifold is trivial.
We investigate the extrinsic topology of Lagrangian submanifolds and of their submanifolds in closed symplectic manifolds using Floer homological methods. The first result asserts that the homology class of a displaceable monotone Lagrangian submanifold vanishes in the homology of the ambient symplectic manifold. Combining this with spectral invariants we provide a new mechanism for proving Lagrangian intersection results e.g. entailing that any two simply connected Lagrangian submanifold in $\CP^n\times\CP^n$ must intersect.
We show that a small neighborhood of a closed symplectic submanifold in a geometrically bounded aspherical symplectic manifold has non-vanishing symplectic homology. As a consequence, we establish the existence of contractible closed characteristics on any thickening of the boundary of the neighborhood. When applied to twisted geodesic flows on compact symplectically aspherical manifolds, this implies the existence of contractible periodic orbits for a dense set of low energy values.
We give a construction of the Floer homology of the pair of {\it non-compact} Lagrangian submanifolds, which satisfies natural continuity property under the Hamiltonian isotopy which moves the infinity but leaves the intersection set of the pair compact. This construction uses the concept of Lagrangian cobordism and certain singular Lagrangian submanifolds. We apply this construction to conormal bundles (or varieties) in the cotangent bundle, and relate it to a conjecture made by MacPherson on the intersection theory of the characteristic Lagrangian cycles associated to the perverse sheaves co…
Contact homology for Legendrian submanifolds in standard contact $(2n+1)$-space is rigorously defined using moduli spaces of holomorphic disks with Lagrangian boundary conditions in complex $n$-space. It provides new invariants of Legendrian isotopy. Using these invariants the theory of Legendrian isotopy is shown to be very rich. For example, infinite families of pairwise non-isotopic Legendrian $n$-spheres and $n$-tori, which are indistinguishable by means of previously known invariants, are constructed. In a sense, the definition of contact homology presented in this paper is a high dimensi…
In general, Lagrangian Floer homology - if well-defined - is not isomorphic to singular homology. For arbitrary closed Lagrangian submanifolds a local version of Floer homology is defined in [Flo89, Oh96] which is isomorphic to singular homology. This construction assumes that the involved Hamiltonian function $H$ is sufficiently $C^2$-small and the almost complex structure is sufficiently standard. In this note we develop a new construction of local Floer homology which works for any (compatible) almost complex structure and all Hamiltonian function with Hofer norm less than the minimal (symp…
The quantum homology of the monotone complex quadric surface splits into the sum of two fields. We outline a proof of the following statement: The unities of these fields give rise to distinct symplectic quasi-states defined by asymptotic spectral invariants. In fact, these quasi-states turn out to be "supported" on disjoint Lagrangian submanifolds. Our method involves a spectral sequence which starts at homology of the loop space of the 2-sphere and whose higher differentials are computed via symplectic field theory, in particular with the help of the Bourgeois-Oancea exact sequence.
In this paper, we extend Rabinowitz Floer homology theory which has been established and extensively studied for hypersurfaces to coisotropic submanifolds of higher codimension. With this generalized version of Rabinowitz Floer homology theory, we explore the coisotropic intersection problem which interpolates between the Lagrangian intersection problem and the closed orbit problem. To be specific, we study the existence of leafwise intersection points on contact coisotropic submanifolds and the displaceability of stable coisotropic submanifolds.
We assign, to a Langrangian submanifold $L$, a new homology which manages the bubbling of disks by means of auxiliary Morse data. This invariant of the Hamiltonian isotopy class of $L$ has many applications and naturally leads to a universal Floer theory for Lagrangian intersections.
For an adiscal or monotone regular coisotropic submanifold $N$ of a symplectic manifold I define its Floer homology to be the Floer homology of a certain Lagrangian embedding of $N$. Given a Hamiltonian isotopy $ϕ=(ϕ^t)$ and a suitable almost complex structure, the corresponding Floer chain complex is generated by the $(N,ϕ)$-contractible leafwise fixed points. I also outline the construction of a local Floer homology for an arbitrary closed coisotropic submanifold. Results by Floer and Albers about Lagrangian Floer homology imply lower bounds on the number of leafwise fixed points. This repro…
We study the following rigidity problem in symplectic geometry:can one displace a Lagrangian submanifold from a hypersurface? We relate this to the Arnold Chord Conjecture, and introduce a refined question about the existence of relative leaf-wise intersection points, which are the Lagrangian-theoretic analogue of the notion of leaf-wise intersection points defined by Moser. Our tool is Lagrangian Rabinowitz Floer homology, which we define first for Liouville domains and exact Lagrangian submanifolds with Legendrian boundary. We then extend this to the `virtually contact' setting. By means of …
Rabinowitz Floer homology has been investigated on a submanifold of contact type. The contact condition, however, is quite restrictive. For example, a product of contact hypersurfaces is rarely of contact type. In this article, we study Rabinowitz Floer homology for a class of non-contact submanifolds. We show for this example that there are infinitely many leafwise intersection points by proving a Künneth formula for Rabinowitz Floer homology.
We show how to compute the Lagrangian Floer homology in the one-point blow up of the proper transform of Lagrangians submanifolds, solely in terms of information of the base manifold. As an example we present an alternative computation of the Lagrangian quantum homology in the one-point blow up of (CP^2,ω) of the proper transform of the Clifford torus.
Suppose $X^{N}$ is a closed oriented manifold, $α\in H^*(X;\mathbb{R})$ is a cohomology class, and $Z \in H_{N-k}(X)$ is an integral homology class. We ask the following question: is there an oriented embedded submanifold $Y^{N-k} \subset X$ with homology class $Z$ such that $α|_Y = 0 \in H^*(Y;\mathbb{R})$? In this article, we provide a family of computable obstructions to the existence of such 'exact' submanifolds in a given homology class which arise from studying formal deformations of the de Rham complex. In the final section, we apply these obstructions to prove that the following symple…
In the usual setup, the grading on Floer homology is relative: it is unique only up to adding a constant. "Graded Lagrangian submanifolds" are Lagrangian submanifolds with a bit of extra structure, which fixes the ambiguity in the grading. The idea is originally due to Kontsevich. This paper contains an exposition of the theory. Several applications are given, amongst them: (1) topological restrictions on Lagrangian submanifolds of projective space, (2) the existence of "symplectically knotted" Lagrangian spheres on a K3 surface, (3) a result about the symplectic monodromy of weighted homogene…
We prove the Arnold-Givental conjecture for a class of Lagrangian submanifolds in Marsden-Weinstein quotients which are fixpoint sets of some antisymplectic involution. For these Lagrangians the Floer homology cannot in general be defined by standard means due to the bubbling phenomenon. To overcome this difficulty we consider moment Floer homology whose boundary operator is defined by counting solutions of the symplectic vortex equations on the strip which have better compactness properties than the original Floer equations.
Lagrangian Floer homology in a general case has been constructed by Fukaya, Oh, Ohta and Ono, where they construct an $\AI$-algebra or an $\AI$-bimodule from Lagrangian submanifolds, and studied the obstructions and deformation theories. But for obstructed Lagrangian submanifolds, standard Lagrangian Floer homology can not be defined. We explore several well-known cohomology theories on these $\AI$-objects and explore their properties, which are well-defined and invariant even in the obstructed cases. These are Hochschild and cyclic homology of an $\AI$-objects and Chevalley-Eilenberg or cycli…
A rigorous foundation for the contact homology of Legendrian submanifolds in a contact manifold of the form $P\times \R$ where $P$ is an exact symplectic manifold is established. The class of such contact manifolds include 1-jet spaces of smooth manifolds. As an application, contact homology is used to provide (smooth) isotopy invariants of submanifolds of $\R^n$ and, more generally, invariants of self transverse immersions into $\R^n$ up to restricted regular homotopies. When $n=3$, this application is the first step in extending and providing a contact geometric underpinning for the new knot…
In this note we prove the following theorem: Let $G$ be a compact Lie group acting on a compact symplectic manifold $M$ in a Hamiltonian fashion. If $L$ is an $l$-dimensional closed invariant submanifold of $M$, on which the $G$-action is locally free then the fundamental class $[L]$ is trivial in $H_l(M,{\mathbb Q})$. We also prove similar results for lower homology groups of $L$, in case the group $G$ is a finite product of copies of $S^1$ and SU(2). The key ingredients of the proofs are Kirwan's theorem that Hamiltonian spaces are equivariantly formal and symplectic reduction.
This paper explores the topology of monotone Lagrangian submanifolds $L$ inside a symplectic manifold $M$ by exploiting the relationships between the quantum homology of $M$ and various quantum structures associated to the Lagrangian $L$.
In this paper we define instanton Floer homology groups for a pair consisting of a compact oriented 3-manifold with boundary and a Lagrangian submanifold of the moduli space of flat SU(2)-connections over the boundary. We carry out the construction for a general class of irreducible, monotone boundary conditions. The main examples of such Lagrangian submanifolds are induced from a disjoint union of handle bodies such that the union of the 3-manifold and the handle bodies is an integral homology 3-sphere. The motivation for introducing these invariants arises from our program for a proof of the…
In this note we present a brief introduction to Lagrangian Floer homology and its relation with the solution of Arnol'd conjecture, on the minimal number of non-degenerate fixed points of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism. We start with the basic definition of critical point on smooth manifolds, in oder to sketch some aspects of Morse theory. Introduction to the basics concepts of symplectic geometry are also included, with the idea of understanding the statement of Arnol'd Conjecture and how is related to the intersection of Lagrangian submanifolds.
We study the relation of an embedded Lagrangian cobordism between two closed, orientable Legendrian submanifolds of R^{2n+1}. More precisely, we investigate the behavior of the Thurston-Bennequin number and (linearized) Legendrian contact homology under this relation. The result about the Thurston-Bennequin number can be considered as a generalization of the result of Chantraine which holds when n = 1. In addition, we provide a few constructions of Lagrangian cobordisms and prove that there are infinitely many pairs of exact Lagrangian cobordant and not pairwise Legendrian isotopic Legendrian …
If $(X, ω)$ is a symplectic manifold, and $Σ$ is a smooth symplectic submanifold Poincaré dual to a positive multiple of $ω$, $X \setminus Σ$ admits a compactification as a Liouville domain, which we then complete to $(W, dλ)$. Under monotonicity assumptions on $X$ and on $Σ$, we construct a chain complex whose homology computes the Symplectic Homology of $W$. We show the differential is given in terms of Morse contributions, terms computed from Gromov-Witten invariants of $X$ relative to $Σ$ and terms computed from the Gromov-Witten invariants of $Σ$. We use a Morse-Bott model for symplectic …
In this paper we construct an $\mathcal{A}_\infty$-category associated to a Legendrian submanifold of jet spaces. Objects of the category are augmentations of the Chekanov algebra $\mathcal{A}(Λ)$ and the homology of the morphism spaces forms a new set of invariants of Legendrian submanifolds called the bilinearised Legendrian contact homology. Those are constructed as a generalisation of linearised Legendrian contact homology using two augmentations instead of one. Considering similar constructions with more augmentations leads to the higher order compositions map in the category and generali…
In this paper we use Floer theory to study topological restrictions on Lagrangian embeddings in closed symplectic manifolds. One of the phenomena arising from our results is ``homological rigidity'' of Lagrangian submanifolds. Namely, in certain symplectic manifolds, conditions on low dimensional topological invariants of a Lagrangian (such as its first homology) completely determine its entire homology. We also develop methods for studying Hamiltonian displacement of Lagrangian submanifolds and its relations to the topology of Lagrangians. Finally we present some new results on Lagrangian int…
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the following problem: For a fixed 2-dimensional homology class K in a simply connected symplectic 4-manifold, up to smooth isotopy, how many connected smoothly embedded symplectic submanifolds represent K? We show that when K can be represented by a symplectic torus, there are many instances when K can be representated by infinitely many non-isotopic symplectic tori.
Positive loops of Legendrian embeddings are examined from the point of view of Floer homology of Lagrangian cobordisms. This leads to new obstructions to the existence of a positive loop containing a given Legendrian, expressed in terms of the Legendrian contact homology of the Legendrian submanifold. As applications, old and new examples of orderable contact manifolds are obtained and discussed. We also show that contact manifolds admitting a filling of a Liouville domain with non-zero symplectic homology is strongly orderable in the sense of Liu.
Let $M$ be a closed symplectic manifold and $L \subset M$ a Lagrangian submanifold. Denote by $[L]$ the homology class induced by $L$ viewed as a class in the quantum homology of $M$. The present paper is concerned with properties and identities involving the class $[L]$ in the quantum homology ring. We also study the relations between these identities and invariants of $L$ coming from Lagrangian Floer theory. We pay special attention to the case when $L$ is a Lagrangian sphere.
Let $L\subset J^1(M)$ be a Legendrian submanifold of the 1-jet space of a Riemannian $n$-manifold $M$. A correspondence is established between rigid flow trees in $M$ determined by $L$ and boundary punctured rigid pseudo-holomorphic disks in $T^\ast M$, with boundary on the projection of $L$ and asymptotic to the double points of this projection at punctures, provided $n\le 2$, or provided $n>2$ and the front of $L$ has only cusp edge singularities. This result, in particular, shows how to compute the Legendrian contact homology of $L$ in terms of Morse theory.
We study the symplectic topology of some finite algebraic quotients of the An Milnor fibre which are diffeomorphic to the rational homology balls that appear in Fintushel and Stern's rational blowdown construction. We prove that these affine surfaces have no closed exact Lagrangian submanifolds by using the already available and deep understanding of the Fukaya category of the An Milnor fibre coming from homological mirror symmetry. On the other hand, we find Floer theoretically essential monotone Lagrangian tori, finitely covered by the monotone tori which we study in the An Milnor fibre. We …
Let $Λ, Λ'$ be a pair of closed Legendrian submanifolds in a closed contact manifold $(Y, ξ= Ker(α))$ related by a Legendrian cobordism $W\subset (\mathbb{C}\times Y, \tildeξ=Ker(-y dx +α))$. In this note, we show that in the hypertight setting, if $Λ$ intersects a closed, weakly exact or monotone pre-Lagrangian $P\subset Y$ for reasons of Floer homology, then so does $Λ'$.
We use Floer homology to study the Hofer-Zehnder capacity of neighborhoods near a closed symplectic submanifold M of a geometrically bounded and symplectically aspherical ambient manifold. We prove that, when the unit normal bundle of M is homologically trivial in degree dim(M) (for example, if codim(M) > dim(M)), a refined version of the Hofer-Zehnder capacity is finite for all open sets close enough to M. We compute this capacity for certain tubular neighborhoods of M by using a squeezing argument in which the algebraic framework of Floer theory is used to detect nontrivial periodic orbits. …
We introduce a homology theory whose Euler characteristics counts ASD bundles over four dimensional co-associative submanifolds in (almost) G_2 manifolds. As a TQFT, in relative situations, we have the Fukaya-Floer category of Lagrangians intersection in the moduli space of special Lagrangian submanifolds in CY threefolds.
In this article, the authors review what the Floer homology is and what it does in symplectic geometry both in the closed string and in the open string context. In the first case, the authors will explain how the chain level Floer theory leads to the $C^0$ symplectic invariants of Hamiltonian flows and to the study of topological Hamiltonian dynamics. In the second case, the authors explain how Floer's original construction of Lagrangian intersection Floer homology is obstructed in general as soon as one leaves the category of exact Lagrangian submanifolds. They will survey construction, obstr…
We investigate the relations between algebraic structures, spectral invariants, and persistence modules, in the context of monotone Lagrangian Floer homology with Hamiltonian term. Firstly, we use the newly introduced method of filtered continuation elements to prove that the Lagrangian spectral norm controls the barcode of the Hamiltonian perturbation of the Lagrangian submanifold, up to shift, in the bottleneck distance. Moreover, we show that it satisfies Chekanov type low-energy intersection phenomena, and non-degeneracy theorems. Secondly, we introduce a new averaging method for bounding …
For each member of an infinite family of homology classes in the K3-surface E(2), we construct infinitely many non-isotopic symplectic tori representing this homology class. This family has an infinite subset of primitive classes. We also explain how these tori can be non-isotopically embedded as homologous symplectic submanifolds in many other symplectic 4-manifolds including the elliptic surfaces E(n) for n>2.
We show that if K: P \to R is an autonomous Hamiltonian on a symplectic manifold (P,Ω) which attains 0 as a Morse-Bott nondegenerate minimum along a symplectic submanifold M, and if c_1(TP)|_M vanishes in real cohomology, then the Hamiltonian flow of K has contractible periodic orbits with bounded period on all sufficiently small energy levels. As a special case, if the geodesic flow on the cotangent bundle of M is twisted by a symplectic magnetic field form, then the resulting flow has contractible periodic orbits on all low energy levels. These results were proven by Ginzburg and Gürel when …
We prove a version of the Arnol'd conjecture for Lagrangian submanifolds of conformal symplectic manifolds: a Lagrangian $L$ which has non-zero Morse-Novikov homology for the restriction of the Lee form $β$ cannot be disjoined from itself by a $C^0$-small Hamiltonian isotopy. Furthermore for generic such isotopies the number of intersection points equals at least the sum of the free Betti numbers of the Morse-Novikov homology of $β$. We also give a short exposition of conformal symplectic geometry, aimed at readers who are familiar with (standard) symplectic or contact geometry.
