We consider the mixed problem for the Laplace operator in a class of Lipschitz graph domains in two dimensions with Lipschitz constant at most 1. The boundary of the domain is decomposed into two disjoint sets D and N. We suppose the Dirichlet data, f_D has one derivative in L^p(D) of the boundary and the Neumann data is in L^p(N). We find conditions on the domain and the sets D and N so that there is a p_0>1 so that for p in the interval (1,p_0), we may find a unique solution to the mixed problem and the gradient of the solution lies in L^p.
We establish a priori Lipschitz estimates for equations with mixed local and nonlocal diffusion, coercive gradient terms and unbounded right-hand side in Lebesgue spaces through an integral refinement of the Bernstein method. This relies on a nonlinear, nonlocal and variational version of the Bochner identity that involves the adjoint equation of the linearization of the initial problem.
We prove a global version of the so-called div-curl-lemma, a crucial result for compensated compactness and in homogenization theory, for mixed tangential and normal boundary conditions in bounded weak Lipschitz domains in 3D and weak Lipschitz interfaces. The crucial tools and the core of our arguments are the de Rham complex and Weck's selection theorem, the essential compact embedding result for Maxwell's equations.
A mixed boundary value problem for the partial differential equation of diffusion in an inhomogeneous medium in a Lipschitz domain is reduced to a system of direct segregated parametrix-based Boundary-Domain Integral Equations (BDIEs). We use a parametrix different from the one employed in the papers by Mikhailov (2002, 2006) and Chkadua, Mikhailov, Natroshvili (2009). We prove the equivalence between the original BVP and the corresponding BDIE system. The invertibility and Fredholm properties of the boundary-domain integral operators are also analysed.
We establish new Hoelder and Lipschitz estimates for viscosity solutions of a large class of elliptic and parabolic nonlinear integro-differential equations, by the classical Ishii-Lions's method. We thus extend the Hoelder regularity results recently obtained by Barles, Chasseigne and Imbert (2011). In addition, we deal with a new class of nonlocal equations that we term mixed integro-differential equations. These equations are particularly interesting, as they are degenerate both in the local and nonlocal term, but their overall behavior is driven by the local-nonlocal interaction, e.g. the …
We consider the mixed boundary value problem or Zaremba's problem for the Laplacian in a bounded Lipschitz domain in R^n. We specify Dirichlet data on part of the boundary and Neumann data on the remainder of the boundary. We assume that the boundary between the sets where we specify Dirichlet and Neumann data is a Lipschitz surface. We require that the Neumann data is in L^p and the Dirichlet data is in the Sobolev space of functions having one derivative in L^p for some p near 1. Under these conditions, there is a unique solution to the mixed problem with the non-tangential maximal function …
This paper continues the study of the mixed problem for the Laplacian. We consider a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset \reals^n$, $n\geq2$, with boundary that is decomposed as $\partialΩ=D\cup N$, $D$ and $N$ disjoint. We let $Λ$ denote the boundary of $D$ (relative to $\partialΩ$) and impose conditions on the dimension and shape of $Λ$ and the sets $N$ and $D$. Under these geometric criteria, we show that there exists $p_0>1$ depending on the domain $Ω$ such that for $p$ in the interval $(1,p_0)$, the mixed problem with Neumann data in the space $L^p(N)$ and Dirichlet data in the Sobolev spa…
We prove that for bounded Lipschitz domains in $\mathbb{R}^N$ Korn's first inequality holds for vector fields satisfying homogeneous mixed normal and tangential boundary conditions.
The purpose of this paper is to study the mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary value problem for the semilinear Darcy-Forchheimer-Brinkman system in $L_p$-based Besov spaces on a bounded Lipschitz domain in ${\mathbb R}^3$, with $p$ in a neighborhood of $2$. This system is obtained by adding the semilinear term $|{\bf u}|{\bf u}$ to the linear Brinkman equation. {First, we provide some results about} equivalence between the Gagliardo and non-tangential traces, as well as between the weak canonical conormal derivatives and the non-tangential conormal derivatives. Various mapping and invertibility p…
In dimension two or three, the weak maximum principal for biharmonic equation is valid in any bounded Lipschitz domains. In higher dimensions (greater than three), it was only known that the weak maximum principle holds in convex domains or $C^1$ domains, and may fail in general Lipschitz domains. In this paper, we prove the weak maximum principle in higher dimensions in quasiconvex Lipschitz domains, which is a sharp condition in some sense and recovers both convex and $C^1$ domains.
Existence of mild solutions for the 3D MHD system in bounded Lipschitz domains is established in critical spaces with the absolute boundary conditions.
We introduce the class of quasiconvex Lipschitz domains, which covers both $C^1$ and convex domains, to the study of boundary unique continuation for elliptic operators. In particular, we prove the upper bound of the size of nodal sets for Dirichlet eigenfunctions of general elliptic equations in bounded quasiconvex Lipschitz domains. Our result is new even for Laplace operator in convex domains.
This is a survey of results mostly relating elliptic equations and systems of arbitrary even order with rough coefficients in Lipschitz graph domains. Asymptotic properties of solutions at a point of a Lipschitz boundary are also discussed.
We study the boundary integral operator induced from fractional Laplace equation in a bounded Lipschitz domain. As an application, we study the boundary value problem of a fractional Laplace equation.
We establish two commutator estimates for the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated with a second-order elliptic system in divergence form in Lipschitz domains. Our approach is based on Dahlberg's bilinear estimates.
We develop various quantitative estimates for the anisotropic Maxwell system in Lipschitz domains, with a focus on how the estimates precisely depend on the Lipschitz character of the domain. We pay special attention to trace operators and extension operators over certain Sobolev spaces. Finally, we provide a weak formulation of the interior scattering problem in terms of the exterior Calderón operator, and provide explicit bounds for the solution of the interior problem in terms of the incident fields and the Lipschitz character of the domain.
In this paper we study the resolvent of wave operators on open and bounded Lipschitz domains of $\mathbb{R}^N$ with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. We give results on existence and estimates of the resolvent for the real and complex cases.
We construct solutions to p-Laplace type equations in unbounded Lipschitz domains in the plane with prescribed boundary data in appropriate fractional Sobolev spaces. Our approach builds on a Cauchy integral representation formula for solutions.
In this paper we consider scalar parabolic equations in a general non-smooth setting with emphasis on mixed interface and boundary conditions. In particular, we allow for dynamics and diffusion on a Lipschitz interface and on the boundary, where diffusion coefficients are only assumed to be bounded, measurable and positive semidefinite. In the bulk, we additionally take into account diffusion coefficients which may degenerate towards a Lipschitz surface. For this problem class, we introduce a unified functional analytic framework based on sesquilinear forms and show maximal regularity for the …
This paper is concerned with boundary regularity estimates in the homogenization of elliptic equations with rapidly oscillating and high-contrast coefficients. We establish uniform nontangential-maximal-function estimates for the Dirichlet, regularity, and Neumann problems with $L^2$ boundary data in a periodically perforated Lipschitz domain.
We prove wellposedness of the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation for any defocusing power nonlinearity on a domain of the plane with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The main argument is based on a generalized Strichartz inequality on manifolds with Lipschitz metric.
We develop a new real-variable method for weighted $L^p$ estimates. The method is applied to the study of weighted $W^{1, 2}$ estimates in Lipschitz domains for weak solutions of second-order elliptic systems in divergence form with bounded measurable coefficients. It produces a necessary and sufficient condition, which depends on the weight function, for the weighted $W^{1,2}$ estimate to hold in a fixed Lipschitz domain with a given weight. Using this condition, for elliptic systems in Lipschitz domains with rapidly oscillating, periodic and VMO coefficients, we reduce the problem of weighte…
We prove global and local versions of the so-called div-curl-lemma, a crucial result in the homogenization theory of partial differential equations, for mixed boundary conditions on bounded weak Lipschitz domains in 3D with weak Lipschitz interfaces. We will generalize our results using an abstract Hilbert space setting, which shows corresponding results to hold in arbitrary dimensions as well as for various differential operators. The crucial tools and the core of our arguments are Hilbert complexes and related compact embeddings.
This paper is devoted to the proof of Lipschitz regularity, down to the microscopic scale, for solutions of an elliptic system with highly oscillating coefficients, over a highly oscillating Lipschitz boundary. The originality of this result is that it does not assume more than Lipschitz regularity on the boundary. Our Theorem, which is a significant improvement of our previous work on Lipschitz estimates in bumpy domains, should be read as an improved regularity result for an elliptic system over a Lipschitz boundary. Our progress in this direction is made possible by an estimate for a bounda…
It is proved that the space of differential forms with weak exterior and co-derivative, is compactly embedded into the space of square integrable differential forms. Mixed boundary conditions on weak Lipschitz domains are considered. Furthermore, canonical applications such as Maxwell estimates, Helmholtz decompositions and a static solution theory are proved. As a side product and crucial tool for our proofs we show the existence of regular potentials and regular decompositions as well.
Using Maz'ya type integral identities with power weights, we obtain new boundary estimates for biharmonic functions on Lipschitz and convex domains in $R^n$. For $n\ge 8$, combined with a result in \cite{S2}, these estimates lead to the solvability of the $L^p$ Dirichlet problem for the biharmonic equation on Lipschitz domains for a new range of $p$. In the case of convex domains, the estimates allow us to show that the $L^p$ Dirichlet problem is uniquely solvable for any $2-\e<p<\infty$ and $n\ge 4$.
We establish the $L^p$ resolvent estimates for the Stokes operator in Lipschitz domains in $R^d$, $d\ge 3$ for $|\frac{1}{p}-1/2|< \frac{1}{2d} +ε$. The result, in particular, implies that the Stokes operator in a three-dimensional Lipschitz domain generates a bounded analytic semigroup in $L^p$ for $(3/2)-\varep < p< 3+ε$. This gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture of M. Taylor.
We show that a Lipschitz domain can be expanded solely near a part of its boundary, assuming that the part is enclosed by a piecewise C1 curve. The expanded domain as well as the extended part are both Lipschitz. We apply this result to prove a regular decomposition of standard vector Sobolev spaces with vanishing traces only on part of the boundary. Another application in the construction of low-regularity projectors into finite element spaces with partial boundary conditions is also indicated.
We study spectral estimates of the divergence form uniform elliptic operators $-\textrm{div}[A(z) \nabla f(z)]$ with the Dirichlet boundary condition in bounded non-Lipschitz simply connected domains $Ω\subset \mathbb C$. The suggested method is based on the quasiconformal composition operators on Sobolev spaces with applications to the weighted Poincaré-Sobolev inequalities.
We give blow-up analysis for a Brezis-Merle's problem on the boundary. Also we give a proof of a compactness result with Lipschitz condition and weaker assumption on the regularity of the domain (smooth domain or $ C^{2,α} $ domain).
We develop a new approach to the invertibility of the layer potentials on $L^p$ associated with elliptic equations and systems in Lipschitz domains. As a consequence, for $n\ge 4$ and $(2(n-1)/(n+1))-ε<p<2$, we obtain the solvability of the L^p Neumann type boundary value problems for second order elliptic systems. The analogous results for the biharmonic equation are also established.
In the paper, we establish commutator estimates for the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map of Stokes systems in Lipschitz domains. The approach is based on Dahlberg's bilinear estimates, and the results may be regarded as an extension of [Dahlberg, Poisson semigroups and singular integrals, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., 97(1986), no.1, 41-48.] and [Shen, Commutator estimates for the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map in Lipschitz domains, Some topics in harmonic analysis and applications, 369C384, Adv. Lect. Math. (ALM)34, Int. Press, Somerville, MA, 2016.] to Stokes systems.
For a bounded weak Lipschitz domain we show the so called `Maxwell compactness property', that is, the space of square integrable vector fields having square integrable weak rotation and divergence and satisfying mixed tangential and normal boundary conditions is compactly embedded into the space of square integrable vector fields. We will also prove some canonical applications, such as Maxwell estimates, Helmholtz decompositions and a static solution theory. Furthermore, a Fredholm alternative for the underlying time-harmonic Maxwell problem and all corresponding and related results for exter…
The aim of this paper is to establish $W^2_p$ estimate for non-divergence form second-order elliptic equations with the oblique derivative boundary condition in domains with small Lipschitz constants. Our result generalizes those in [14, 15], which work for $C^{1,α}$ domains with $α> 1-1/p$. As an application, we also obtain a solvability result. An extension to fully nonlinear elliptic equations with the oblique derivative boundary condition is also discussed.
We consider the classical obstacle problem on bounded, connected Lipschitz domains $D \subset \mathbb{R}^n$. We derive quantitative bounds on the changes to contact sets under general perturbations to both the right hand side and the boundary data for obstacle problems. In particular, we show that the Lebesgue measure of the symmetric difference between two contact sets is linearly comparable to the $L^1$-norm of perturbations in the data.
We establish interior Lipschitz estimates at the macroscopic scale for solutions to systems of linear elasticity with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients and mixed boundary conditions in domains periodically perforated at a microscopic scale $\varepsilon$ by establishing $H^1$-convergence rates for such solutions. The interior estimates are derived directly without the use of compactness via an argument presented in [3] that was adapted for elliptic equations in [2] and [11]. As a consequence, we derive a Liouville type estimate for solutions to the systems of linear elasticity in unboun…
In this paper, we study a Dirichlet problem of a fractional Laplace equation in a bounded Lipschitz domain in $ \R, n \geq 2$. Our main result is that for the given data $F \in \dot H^s(\Om^c), 0 < s<1$, we find the function which satisfies that $\De^s u =0$ in $\Om$, $u|_{\Om^c} =F$ and $|u|_{\dot{H}^s(\R)} \leq c |F|_{\dot H^s(\Om^c)}$. Furthermore, we represent the solution with an integral operator.
For a linear, strictly elliptic second order differential operator in divergence form with bounded, measurable coefficients on a Lipschitz domain $Ω$ we show that solutions of the corresponding elliptic problem with Robin and thus in particular with Neumann boundary conditions are Hoelder continuous for sufficiently $L^p$-regular right-hand sides. From this we deduce that the parabolic problem with Robin or Wentzell-Robin boundary conditions are well-posed on $\mathrm{C}(\barΩ)$.
This paper contains two results on the $L^p$ regularity problem on Lipschitz domains. For second order elliptic systems and $1<p<\infty$, we prove that the solvability of the $L^p$ regularity problem is equivalent to that of the $L^{p^\prime}$ Dirichlet problem. For higher order elliptic equations and systems, we show that if $p>2$, the solvability of the $L^p$ regularity problem is equivalent to a weak reverse Hölder condition with exponent $p$.
In this paper, we study a class of boundary value problems (BVPs) with Robin conditions in some $L^p$ spaces for polyharmonic equation on Lipschitz domains. Utilizing polyharmonic fundamental solutions, these Robin BVPs are solved by the method of layer potentials. The crucial ingedients of our approach are the classical single layer potential and its higher order analog (which are called multi-layer $S$-potentials), and the main results generalize ones of second order (Laplacian) case to higher order (polyharmonic) case.
We study the Dirichlet problem in Lipschitz domains and with boundary data in Besov spaces, for divergence form strongly elliptic systems of arbitrary order, with bounded, complex-valued coefficients. Our main result gives a sharp condition on the local mean oscillations of the coefficients of the differential operator and the unit normal to the boundary (which is automatically satisfied if these functions belong to space VMO) guaranteeing that the solution operator associated with this problem is an isomorphism.
This paper treats the time-harmonic electro-magnetic scattering or radiation problem governed by Maxwell's equations in an exterior weak Lipschitz domain divided into two disjoint weak Lipschitz parts We will present a solution theory using the framework of polynomially weighted Sobolev spaces for the rotation and divergence. We will show a Fredholm alternative type result to hold using the principle of limiting absorption introduced by Eidus in the 1960's. The necessary a-priori-estimate and polynomial decay of eigenfunctions for the Maxwell equations will be obtained by transferring well kno…
We study second order equations and systems on non-Lipschitz domains including mixed boundary conditions. The key result is interpolation for suitable function spaces. From this, elliptic and parabolic regularity results are deduced by means of Sneiberg's isomorphism theorem.
We prove that the time-harmonic solutions to Maxwell's equations in a 3D exterior domain converge to a certain static solution as the frequency tends to zero. We work in weighted Sobolev spaces and construct new compactly supported replacements for Dirichlet-Neumann fields. Moreover, we even show convergence in operator norm.
Let $\mathcal{L}$ be a second-order linear elliptic operator with complex coefficients. We show that if the $L^p$ Dirichlet problem for the elliptic system $\mathcal{L}(u)=0$ in a fixed Lipschitz domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is solvable for some $1<p=p_0< \frac{2(d-1)}{d-2}$, then it is solvable for all $p$ satisfying $$ p_0<p< \frac{2(d-1)}{d-2} +\varepsilon. $$ The proof is based on a real-variable argument. It only requires that local solutions of $\mathcal{L}(u)=0$ satisfy a boundary Cacciopoli inequality.
The purpose of this paper is to study boundary value problems of transmission type for the Navier-Stokes and Darcy-Forchheimer-Brinkman systems in two complementary Lipschitz domains on a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension 2 or 3. We exploit a layer potential method combined with a fixed point theorem in order to show existence and uniqueness results when the given data are suitably small in $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces.
We study the $L^p$ Dirichlet problem for the Stokes system on Lipschitz domains. For any fixed $p>2$, we show that a reverse Hölder condition with exponent $p$ is sufficient for the solvability of the Dirichlet problem with boundary data in $L^p_N(\partialΩ,\rn{d})$. Then we obtain a much simpler condition which implies the reverse Hölder condition. Finally, we establish the solvability ofthe $L^p$ Dirichlet problem for $d\geq 4$ and $2-\varepsilon<p<\frac{2(d-1)}{d-3}+\varepsilon$.
In this paper, we analyze the behavior of a family of solutions of a nonlinear elliptic equation with nonlinear boundary conditions, when the boundary of the domain presents a highly oscillatory behavior which is uniformly Lipschitz and nonlinear terms are concentrated in a region which neighbors the boundary domain. We prove that this family of solutions converges to the solutions of a limit problem in H^1 , an elliptic equation with nonlinear boundary conditions which captures the oscillatory behavior of the boundary and whose nonlinear terms are transformed into a flux condition on the boun…
We prove forward and backward parabolic boundary Harnack principles for nonnegative solutions of the heat equation in the complements of thin parabolic Lipschitz sets given as subgraphs $E=\{(x,t): x_{n-1}\leq f(x'',t),x_n=0\}\subset \mathbb{R}^{n-1}\times\mathbb{R} $ for parabolically Lipschitz functions $f$ on $\mathbb{R}^{n-2}\times\mathbb{R}$. We are motivated by applications to parabolic free boundary problems with thin (i.e co-dimension two) free boundaries. In particular, at the end of the paper we show how to prove the spatial $C^{1,α}$ regularity of the free boundary in the parabolic …
We settle the issue of well-posedness for the Dirichlet problem for a higher order elliptic system ${\mathcal L}(x,D_x)$ with complex-valued, bounded, measurable coefficients in a Lipschitz domain $Ω$, with boundary data in Besov spaces. The main hypothesis under which our principal result is established is in the nature of best possible and requires that, at small scales, the mean oscillations of the unit normal to $\partialΩ$ and of the coefficients of the differential operator ${\mathcal L}(x,D_x)$ are not too large.
We use the scale $B^s_τ(L_τ(Ω))$, $1/τ=s/d+1/2$, $s>0$, to study the regularity of the stationary Stokes equation on bounded Lipschitz domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 3$, with connected boundary. The regularity in these Besov spaces determines the order of convergence of nonlinear approximation schemes. Our proofs rely on a combination of weighted Sobolev estimates and wavelet characterizations of Besov spaces. By using Banach's fixed point theorem, we extend this analysis to the stationary Navier-Stokes equation with suitable Reynolds number and data, respectively.
Consider operators $L^{V}:=Δ+ V$ in a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$. Assume that $V\in C^{1,1}(Ω)$ and $V$ satisfies $V(x) \leq \overline{a} \mathrm{dist}(x,\partialΩ)^{-2}$ in $Ω$ and a second condition that guarantees the existence of a ground state $Φ_V$. If, for example, $V>0$ this condition reads $1<c_H(V)$ (= the Hardy constant relative to $V$). We derive estimates of positive $L_V$ harmonic functions and of positive Green potentials of measures $τ\in {\mathfrak M}_+(Ω;Φ_V)$. These imply estimates of positive $L_V$ supersolutions and of $L_V$ subsolutions. Similar resu…
