Using Maz'ya type integral identities with power weights, we obtain new boundary estimates for biharmonic functions on Lipschitz and convex domains in $R^n$. For $n\ge 8$, combined with a result in \cite{S2}, these estimates lead to the solvability of the $L^p$ Dirichlet problem for the biharmonic equation on Lipschitz domains for a new range of $p$. In the case of convex domains, the estimates allow us to show that the $L^p$ Dirichlet problem is uniquely solvable for any $2-\e<p<\infty$ and $n\ge 4$.
In dimension two or three, the weak maximum principal for biharmonic equation is valid in any bounded Lipschitz domains. In higher dimensions (greater than three), it was only known that the weak maximum principle holds in convex domains or $C^1$ domains, and may fail in general Lipschitz domains. In this paper, we prove the weak maximum principle in higher dimensions in quasiconvex Lipschitz domains, which is a sharp condition in some sense and recovers both convex and $C^1$ domains.
We show that a bilinear estimate for biharmonic functions in a Lipschitz domain $Ω$is equivalent to the solvability of the Dirichlet problem for the biharmonic equationin $Ω$. As a result, we prove that for any given bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω$ in $\rn{d}$ and $1<q<\infty$, the solvability of the $L^{q}$ Dirichlet problem for $Δ^2 u=0$ in $Ω$ with boundary data in ${\emph{WA}}^{1,q}(\partialΩ)$ is equivalent to that of the $L^p$ regularity problem for $Δ^2 u=0$ in $Ω$ with boundary data in ${\emph{WA}}^{2,p}(\partialΩ)$, where $\frac{1}{p} +\frac{1}{q}=1$. This duality relation, together with…
In this paper, we consider the characterizations of the Lipschitz spaces and homogeneous Lipschitz spaces associated to the biharmonic operator $Δ^2.$ With this characterizations, we prove the boundedness of the Bessel potentials, fractional integrals, fractional powers, Riesz transforms and multipliers of Laplace transforms type associated to $Δ^2$ on Lipschitz spaces and homogeneous Lipschitz spaces. The proofs of these results need the language of semigroups in an essential way.
We consider the Dirichlet problem for the biharmonic equation on an arbitrary convex domain and prove that the second derivatives of the variational solution are bounded in all dimensions.
In this paper, we study the phenomenon of increasing stability in the inverse boundary value problems for the biharmonic equation. By considering a linearized form, we obtain an increasing Lipschitz-like stability when k is large. Furthermore, we extend the discussion to the linearized inverse biharmonic potential problem with attenuation, where an exponential dependence of the attenuation constant is traced in the stability estimate.
We consider the problem of describing the traces of functions in $H^2(Ω)$ on the boundary of a Lipschitz domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb R^N$, $N\geq 2$. We provide a definition of those spaces, in particular of $H^{\frac{3}{2}}(\partialΩ)$, by means of Fourier series associated with the eigenfunctions of new multi-parameter biharmonic Steklov problems which we introduce with this specific purpose. These definitions coincide with the classical ones when the domain is smooth. Our spaces allow to represent in series the solutions to the biharmonic Dirichlet problem. Moreover, a few spectral properties of…
The behavior of solutions to the biharmonic equation is well-understood in smooth domains. In the past two decades substantial progress has also been made for the polyhedral domains and domains with Lipschitz boundaries. However, very little is known about higher order elliptic equations in the general setting. In this paper we introduce new integral identities that allow to investigate the solutions to the biharmonic equation in an arbitrary domain. We establish: (1) boundedness of the gradient of a solution in any three-dimensional domain; (2) pointwise estimates on the derivatives of the bi…
This paper is concerned with the stability of the inverse source problem for the damped biharmonic plate equation in three dimensions. The stability estimate consists of the Lipschitz type data discrepancy and the high frequency tail of the source function, where the latter decreases as the upper bound of the frequency increases. The stability also shows exponential dependence on the constant damping coefficient. The analysis employs Carleman estimates and time decay estimates for the damped plate wave equation to obtain an exact observability bound and depends on the study of the resonance-fr…
We develop a new approach to the invertibility of the layer potentials on $L^p$ associated with elliptic equations and systems in Lipschitz domains. As a consequence, for $n\ge 4$ and $(2(n-1)/(n+1))-ε<p<2$, we obtain the solvability of the L^p Neumann type boundary value problems for second order elliptic systems. The analogous results for the biharmonic equation are also established.
In this paper, we study for the first time the stability of the inverse source problem for the biharmonic operator with a compactly supported potential in $\mathbb R^3$. Firstly, to connect the boundary data with the unknown source, we shall consider an eigenvalue problem for the bi-Schr$\ddot{\rm o}$dinger operator $Δ^2 + V(x)$ on a ball which contains the support of the potential $V$. We prove a Weyl-type law for the upper bounds of spherical normal derivatives of both the eigenfunctions $ϕ$ and their Laplacian $Δϕ$ corresponding to the bi-Schr$\ddot{\rm o}$dinger operator. This type of uppe…

We consider the problem of minimizing the Lagrangian $\int [F(\nabla u)+f\,u]$ among functions on $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ with given boundary datum $φ$. We prove Lipschitz regularity up to the boundary for solutions of this problem, provided $Ω$ is convex and $φ$ satisfies the bounded slope condition. The convex function $F$ is required to satisfy a qualified form of uniform convexity {\it only outside a ball} and no growth assumptions are made.
We introduce the class of quasiconvex Lipschitz domains, which covers both $C^1$ and convex domains, to the study of boundary unique continuation for elliptic operators. In particular, we prove the upper bound of the size of nodal sets for Dirichlet eigenfunctions of general elliptic equations in bounded quasiconvex Lipschitz domains. Our result is new even for Laplace operator in convex domains.

Given a semi-convex potential V on a convex and bounded domain $Ω$, we consider the Jordan-Kinderlehrer-Otto scheme for the Fokker-Planck equation with potential V, which defines, for fixed time step $τ$ > 0, a sequence of densities $ρ$ k $\in$ P($Ω$). Supposing that V is $α$-convex, i.e. D 2 V $\ge$ $α$I, we prove that the Lipschitz constant of log $ρ$ + V satisfies the following inequality: Lip(log($ρ$ k+1) + V)(1 + $α$$τ$) $\le$ Lip(log($ρ$ k) + V). This provides exponential decay if $α$ > 0, Lipschitz bounds on bounded intervals of time, which is coherent with the results on the continuous…
The paper is concerned with a free boundary problem generated by the biharmonic operator and an obstacle. The main goal is to deduce a fully guaranteed upper bound of the difference between the exact minimizer u and any function (approximation) from the corresponding energy class (which consists of the functions in $H^2$ satisfying the prescribed boundary conditions and the restrictions stipulated by the obstacle). For this purpose we use the duality method of the calculus of variations and general type error identities earlier derived for a wide class of convex variational problems. By this m…
This paper is concerned with an inverse source problem for the three-dimensional Helmholtz equation by a single boundary measurement at a fixed frequency. We show the Lipschitz stability under the assumption that the source function is piecewise constant on a domain which is made of a union of disjoint convex polyhedral subdomains..
We consider a model convex functional with orthotropic structure and super-quadratic nonstandard growth conditions. We prove that bounded local minimizers are locally Lipschitz, with no restrictions on the ratio between the highest and the lowest growth rate.
We show that sweeping processes with possibly non-convex prox-regular constraints generate a strongly continuous input-output mapping in the space of absolutely continuous functions. Under additional smoothness assumptions on the constraint we prove the local Lipschitz continuity of the input-output mapping. Using the Banach contraction principle, we subsequently prove that also the solution mapping associated with the state-dependent problem is locally Lipschitz continuous.
Let (X, d) be a quasi-convex, complete and separable metric space with reference probability measure m. We prove that the set of of real valued Lipschitz function with non zero point-wise Lipschitz constant m-almost everywhere is residual, and hence dense, in the Banach space of Lipschitz and bounded functions. The result is the metric analogous of a result proved for real valued Lipschitz maps defined on R2 by Alberti, Bianchini and Crippa in [1].
We define self-adjoint extensions of the Hodge Laplacian on Lipschitz domains in Riemannian manifolds, corresponding to either the absolute or the relative boundary condition, and examine regularity properties of these operators' domains and form domains. We obtain results valid for general Lipschitz domains, and stronger results for a special class of ``almost convex'' domains, which apply to domains with corners.
For a bounded domain equipped with a piecewise Lipschitz continuous Riemannian metric g, we consider harmonic map from $(Ω, g)$ to a compact Riemannian manifold $(N,h)\subset\mathbb R^k$ without boundary. We generalize the notion of stationary harmonic map and prove the partial regularity. We also discuss the global Lipschitz and piecewise $C^{1,α}$-regularity of harmonic maps from $(Ω, g)$ manifolds that support convex distance functions.
We provide a direct proof of Weyl's law for the buckling eigenvalues of the biharmonic operator on a wide class of domains of $\mathbb R^d$ including bounded Lipschitz domains. The proof relies on asymptotically sharp lower and upper bounds that we develop for the Riesz mean $R_2(z)$. Lower bounds are obtained by making use of the so-called "averaged variational principle". Upper bounds are obtained in the spirit of Berezin-Li-Yau. Moreover, we state a conjecture for the second term in Weyl's law and prove its correctness in two special cases: balls in $\mathbb R^d$ and bounded intervals in $\…
