In this article we describe the Hall algebra H_X of an elliptic curve X defined over a finite field and show that the group SL(2,Z) of exact auto-equivalences of the derived category D^b(Coh(X)) acts on the Drinfeld double DH_X of H_X by algebra automorphisms. Next, we study a certain natural subalgebra U_X of DH_X for which we give a presentation by generators and relations. This algebra turns out to be a flat two-parameter deformation of the ring of diagonal invariants C[x_1^{\pm 1}, ..., y_1^{\pm 1},...]^{S_{\infty}}, i.e. the ring of symmetric Laurent polynomials in two sets of countably many variables under the simultaneous symmetric group action.
We construct Hall algebra of elliptic curve over $\mathbb{F}_1$ using the theory of monoidal scheme due to Deitmar and the theory of Hall algebra for monoidal representations due to Szczesny. The resulting algebra is shown to be a specialization of elliptic Hall algebra studied by Burban and Schiffmann. Thus our algebra is isomorphic to the skein algebra for torus by the recent work of Morton and Samuelson.
We consider the motivic Hall algebra of coherent sheaves over an irreducible reduced projective curve of arithmetic genus $1$. We introduce the composition subalgebra in the singular curve case, and show that it is isomorphic to the composition subalgebra for a smooth elliptic curve. As in the case of smooth elliptic case studied by Burban and Schiffmann, the reduced Drinfeld double of the composition subalgebra is isomorphic to the quantum toroidal algebra for $\mathfrak{gl}_1$ (also called Ding-Iohara-Miki algebra), and it inherits automorphisms induced from equivalences of the associated de…
In this paper we compute the convolution algebra in the equivariant K-theory of the Hilbert scheme of A^2. We show that it is isomorphic to the elliptic Hall algebra, and hence to the spherical DAHA of GL_\infty. We explain this coincidence via the geometric Langlands correspondence for elliptic curves, by relating it also to the convolution algebra in the equivariant K-theory of the commuting variety. We also obtain a few other related results (action of the elliptic Hall algebra on the K-theory of the moduli space of framed torsion free sheaves over P^2, virtual fundamental classes, shuffle …
We show that the Hall algebra of the category of coherent sheaves on an elliptic curve (or, equivalently, the algebra of unramified automorphic forms for GL(n) for all n) is equal to the stable limit of spherical double affine Hecke algebras for GL(k) as k goes to infinity. The two parameters correspond to the size of the finite field and the modulus of the elliptc curve. Under this isomorphism the Hecke operators are mapped to the Macdonald operators. This allows us to give a geometric construction of Macdonald polynomials (eigenvectors for the Macdonald operator) in terms of a suitable speci…
We give an explicit construction of the cusp eigenforms on an elliptic curve defined over a finite field using the theory of Hall algebras and the Langlands correspondence for function fields and $\GL_n$. As a consequence we obtain a description of the Hall algebra of an elliptic curve as an infinite tensor product of simpler algebras. We prove that all these algebras are specializations of a universal spherical Hall algebra (as defined and studied in \cite{BS} and \cite{SV1}).
We develop the quantum Kodaira-Spencer theory on the elliptic curve and establish the corresponding higher genus B-model. We show that the partition functions of the higher genus B-model on the elliptic curve are almost holomorphic modular forms, which can be identified with partition functions of descendant Gromov-Witten invariants on the mirror elliptic curve. This gives the first compact Calabi-Yau example where mirror symmetry is established at all genera.
From the product of two elliptic curves, Shioda and Inose constructed an elliptic $K3$ surface having two $\mathrm{II}^*$ fibers. Its Mordell-Weil lattice structure depends on the morphisms between the two elliptic curves. In this paper, we give a method of writing down generators of the Mordell-Weil lattice of such elliptic surfaces when two elliptic curves are $3$-isogenous. In particular, we obtain a basis of the Mordell-Weil lattice for the singular $K3$ surfaces $X_{[3,3,3]}$, $X_{[3,2,3]}$ and $X_{[3,0,3]}$.
We study the splitting properties of the Verlinde bundles over elliptic curves. Our methods rely on the explicit description of the moduli space of semistable vector bundles on elliptic curves, and on the analysis of the symmetric powers of the Schrodinger representation of the Theta group.
We study stable curves of arithmetic genus 2 which admit two morphisms of finite degree $p$, resp. $d$, onto smooth elliptic curves, with particular attention to the case $p$ prime.
The graph of a Hecke operator encodes all information about the action of this operator on automorphic forms over a global function field. These graphs were introduced by Lorscheid in his PhD thesis for $\text{PGL}_{2}$ and we generalized to $\text{GL}_{n}$ in the paper "On graphs of Hecke operators". After reviewing some general properties, we explain the connection to the Hall algebra of the function field. In the case of an elliptic function field, we can use structure results of Burban-Schiffmann and Fratila to develop an algorithm which explicitly calculate these graphs. We apply this alg…
In this paper, we develop an algebraic de Rham theory for unipotent fundamental groups of once punctured elliptic curves over a field of characteristic zero using the universal elliptic KZB connection of Calaque-Enriquez-Etingof and Levin-Racinet. We use it to give an explicit version of Tannaka duality for unipotent connections over an elliptic curve with a regular singular point at the identity.
We study non-commutative degenerations of elliptic curves over local fields. The corresponding objects are close relatives of non-commutative tori of Connes and Rieffel.
In this paper we complete the classification of the elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces which admit a non-symplectic involution acting trivially on the Néron--Severi group. We use the geometric method introduced by Oguiso and moreover we provide a geometric construction of the fibrations classified. If the non-symplectic involution fixes at least one curve of genus 1, we relate all the elliptic fibrations on the K3 surface with either elliptic fibrations or generalized conic bundles on rational elliptic surfaces. This description allows us to write the Weierstrass equations of the elliptic fibr…
Genus two curves covering elliptic curves have been the object of study of many articles. For a fixed degree $n$ the subloci of the moduli space $\mathcal M_2$ of curves having a degree $n$ elliptic subcover has been computed for $n=3, 5$ and discussed in detail for $n$ odd; see \cite{Sh1, SV2, Fr, FK}. When the degree of the cover is even the case in general has been treated in \cite{PRS}. In this paper we compute the sublocus of $\mathcal M_2$ of curves having a degree 4 elliptic subcover.
We show that the linear syzygy spaces of elliptic normal curves, their secant varieties and of bielliptic canonical curves are spanned by geometric syzygies.
The Prym variety for a branched double covering of a nonsingular projective curve is defined as a polarized abelian variety. We prove that any double covering of an elliptic curve which has more than $4$ branch points is recovered from its Prym variety.
We introduce a procedure for constructing a generalized elliptic curve from a genus-one twisted curve, and we use this procedure to define an explicit, modular isomorphism between two compactifications of moduli stacks of elliptic curves with level structure.
This paper is a sequel to math.AG/0505148, where the Hall algebra U^+_E of the category of coherent sheaves on an elliptic curve E defined over a finite field was explicitly described, and shown to be a two-parameter deformation of the ring of diagonal invariants R^+=C[x_1^{\pm 1}, ..., y_1,...]^{S_{\infty}} (in infinitely many variables). In the present work, we study a geometric version of this Hall algebra, by considering a convolution algebra of perverse sheaves on the moduli spaces of coherent sheaves on E. This allows us to define a "canonical basis" B of U^+_E in terms of intersection c…
Let $M$ be the moduli space of rank $2$ stable bundles with fixed determinant of degree $1$ on a smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $g\ge 2$. When $C$ is generic, we show that any elliptic curve on $M$ has degree (respect to anti-canonical divisor $-K_M$) at least 6, and we give a complete classification for elliptic curves of degree $6$. Moreover, if $g>4$, we show that any elliptic curve passing through the generic point of $M$ has degree at least $12$. We also formulate a conjecture for higher rank.
In this paper we consider smooth affine elliptic plane curves having one place at infinity. We identify them with elliptic projective plane curves having only one cusp as their singular points and meeting with the line at infinity only at the cusp. We characterize such curves by the self-intersection number of the strict transform of them via the minimal embedded resolution of their cusp. Furthermore, we prove that the self-intersection number of them is the maximum value among those of all the elliptic plane curves having only one cusp.
We study the elliptic modular surface attached to the commutator subgroup of the modular group. This has an elliptic curve as base and only one singular fibre. We employ an algebraic approach and then consider some arithmetic questions.
We prove that all elliptic curves over quadratic fields with a subgroup isomorphic to $C_{16}$, as well as all elliptic curves over cubic fields with a subgroup isomorphic to $C_2\times C_{14}$, are base changes of elliptic curves defined over $\Q$. We obtain these results by studying geometric properties of modular curves and maps between modular curves, and then obtaining a modular description of these curves and maps.
We show that for any elliptic curve (with j invariant not 0 or 1728) over any field of characteristic different from 2 and 3, there exists an hyperelliptic curve H of genus 5 with two independent maps to the given elliptic curve. We also show that, if we want such a curve to be just geometrically hyperelliptic, so having a degree two map to a conic, then there are some with genus 3.
We show that one can define a spectral curve for the Cauchy-Riemann operator on a punctured elliptic curve if one imposes appropriate boundary conditions. Algebraic curves of the type thus obtained appear as irreducible components of spectral curves of minimal tori with planar ends in R^3. It appears that these curves coincide with the spectral curves of certain elliptic KP solitons as studied by Krichever.
We discuss a non-computational elementary approach to a well-known criterion of divisibility by 2 in the group of rational points on an elliptic curve.
We prove a genus formula for modular curves of $D$-elliptic sheaves. We use this formula to show that the reductions of modular curves of $D$-elliptic sheaves attain the Drinfeld-Vladut bound as the degree of the discriminant of $D$ tends to infinity.
In this paper, we study the finiteness problem of torsion points on an elliptic curve whose coordinates satisfy some multiplicative dependence relations. In particular, we prove that on an elliptic curve defined over a number field there are only finitely many torsion points whose coordinates are multiplicatively dependent. Moreover, we produce an effective result when the elliptic curve is defined over the rational numbers or has complex multiplication.
For any number field, we prove that there exists an elliptic curve defined over this field such that its Shafarevich-Tate group has a nontrivial 2-torsion subgroup.
The V_4-lines for each linearly normal space elliptic curve form the edges of a tetrahedron, however in case the elliptic curve has j=12^3, there exist Z_4-lines in addition. We show the arrangement of V_4 and Z_4-lines explicitly for the curve. As a corollary we obtain that each irreducible quartic curve with genus one has at most two Galois points.
In this paper, we give an explicit description of the de Rham and p-adic polylogarithms for elliptic curves using the Kronecker theta function. We prove in particular that when the elliptic curve has complex multiplication and good reduction at p, then the specializations to torsion points of the p-adic elliptic polylogarithm are related to p-adic Eisenstein-Kronecker numbers, proving a p-adic analogue of the result of Beilinson and Levin expressing the complex elliptic polylogarithm in terms of Eisenstein-Kronecker-Lerch series. Our result is valid even if the elliptic curve has supersingular…
We give an asymptotic formula for the number of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ with bounded Faltings height. Silverman has shown that the Faltings height for elliptic curves over number fields can be expressed in terms of modular functions and the minimal discriminant of the elliptic curve. We use this to recast the problem as one of counting lattice points in a particular region in $\mathbb{R}^2$.
We prove that the group of rational points of a non-isotrivial elliptic curve defined over the perfect closure of a function field in one variable over a finite field is finiteley generated.
We list the elliptic curves defined over $Q(\sqrt 5)$ with good reduction away from 2. There are 368 isomorphism classes. We give a global minimal model for each class.
We investigate stable operations in supersingular elliptic cohomology using isogenies of supersingular elliptic curves over finite fields. Our main results provide a framework in which we give a conceptually simple proof of an elliptic cohomology version of the Morava change of rings theorem and also gives models for explicit stable operations in terms of isogenies and morphisms in certain enlarged isogeny categories. We relate our work to that of G. Robert on the Hecke algebra structure of the ring of supersingular modular forms.
We show that the canonical-lift construction for ordinary elliptic curves over perfect fields of characteristic $p>0$ extends uniquely to arbitrary families of ordinary elliptic curves, even over $p$-adic formal schemes. In particular, the universal ordinary elliptic curve has a canonical lift. The existence statement is largely a formal consequence of the universal property of Witt vectors applied to the moduli space of ordinary elliptic curves, at least with enough level structure. As an application, we show how this point of view allows for more formal proofs of recent results of Finotti an…
We define three hard problems in the theory of elliptic divisibility sequences (EDS Association, EDS Residue and EDS Discrete Log), each of which is solvable in sub-exponential time if and only if the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem is solvable in sub-exponential time. We also relate the problem of EDS Association to the Tate pairing and the MOV, Frey-Rück and Shipsey EDS attacks on the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem in the cases where these apply.
In this note we investigate the $p$-degree function of elliptic curves over the field $\mathbb{Q}_p$ of $p$-adic numbers. The $p$-degree measures the least complexity of a non-zero $p$-torsion point on an elliptic curve. We prove some properties of this function and compute it explicitly in some special cases.
For an elliptic curve over Q of analytic rank 1, we use the level-two Selmer variety and secondary cohomology products to find explicit analytic defining equations for global integral points inside the set of p-adic points.
We give examples of points with particularly low height on elliptic curves over quadratic fields, recovered by a search over elliptic divisibility sequences. The smallest example identified satisfies dh(P)=0.0077127...: improving on the previous smallest for curves over quadratic fields of dh(P)=0.0194426... given by Everest and Ward; and comparable with some of the examples of smallest height on curves over Q tabulated by Elkies.
This article is a contribution to the project of classifying the torsion growth of elliptic curve upon base-change. In this article we treat the case of elliptic curve defined over the rationals with complex multiplication. For this particular case, we give a description of the possible torsion growth over cubic fields and a completely explicit description of this growth in terms of some invariants attached to a given elliptic curve.
We show that for all odd primes $p$, there exist ordinary elliptic curves over $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p(x)$ with arbitrarily high rank and constant $j$-invariant. This shows in particular that there are elliptic curves with arbitrarily high rank over these fields for which the corresponding elliptic surface is not supersingular. The result follows from a theorem which states that for all odd prime numbers $p$ and $\ell$, there exists a hyperelliptic curve over $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$ of genus $(\ell-1)/2$ whose Jacobian is isogenous to the power of one ordinary elliptic curve.
This paper is a follow up of arXiv:1702.02255 [math.NT]. We construct explicitly versal families of elliptic curves with rational points of order 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 respectively.
Let C be an algebraic curve in a power of an elliptic curve, both defined over the algebraic numbers. We show that the set of algebraic points of C which satisfy certain conditions is a finite set. This result has implications with the Pink-Zilber Conjeture and the Mordel-Lang plus Bogomolov Theorem for curves.
Building on the positive solution of Pillay's conjecture we present a notion of "intrinsic" reduction for elliptic curves over a real closed field K. We compare such notion with the traditional algebro-geometric reduction and produce a classification of the group of K-points of an elliptic curve E with three "real" roots according to the way E reduces (algebro-geometrically) and the geometric complexity of the "intrinsically" reduced curve.
It is argued that a nonsingular elliptic curve admits a natural or fundamental abelian heap structure uniquely determined by the curve itself. It is shown that the set of complex analytic or rational functions from a nonsingular elliptic curve to itself is a truss arising from endomorphisms of this heap.
We construct nontrivial L-equivalence between curves of genus one and degree five, and between elliptic surfaces of multisection index five. These results give the first examples of L-equivalence for curves (necessarily over non-algebraically closed fields) and provide a new bit of evidence for the conjectural relationship between L-equivalence and derived equivalence. The proof of the L-equivalence for curves is based on Kuznetsov's Homological Projective Duality for Gr(2,5), and L-equivalence is extended from genus one curves to elliptic surfaces using the Ogg--Shafarevich theory of twisting…
