We list the elliptic curves defined over $Q(\sqrt 5)$ with good reduction away from 2. There are 368 isomorphism classes. We give a global minimal model for each class.
This is the third part of a series of papers discussing the cyclic torsion subgroup of elliptic curves over cubic number fields. For $N=39$, we show that $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$ is not a subgroup of $E(K)_{tor}$ for any elliptic curve $E$ over a cubic number field $K$.
This is the third in a series of papers in which we study the n-Selmer group of an elliptic curve, with the aim of representing its elements as curves of degree n in P^{n-1}. The methods we describe are practical in the case n=3 for elliptic curves over the rationals, and have been implemented in Magma. One important ingredient of our work is an algorithm for trivialising central simple algebras. This is of independent interest: for example, it could be used for parametrising Brauer-Severi surfaces.
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of odd characteristic $p$. We exhibit elliptic curves over the rational function field $K = \mathbb{F}_q(t)$ whose Tate-Shafarevich groups are large. More precisely, we consider certain infinite sequences of explicit elliptic curves $E$, for which we prove that their Tate-Shafarevich group $\mathrm{III}(E)$ is finite and satisfies $|\mathrm{III}(E)| = H(E)^{1+o(1)}$ as $H(E)\to\infty$, where $H(E)$ denotes the exponential differential height of $E$. The elliptic curves in these sequences are pairwise neither isogenous nor geometrically isomorphic. We furthe…
Given a real elliptic curve $E$ with non-empty real part and $[D]\in \mbox{Pic}^2 E$ its $g_2^1$, we study the real inflection points of distinguished subseries of the complete real linear series $|\mathcal{L}_\mathbb{R}(kD)|$ for $k\geq 3$. We define {\it key polynomials} whose roots index the ($x$-coordinates of) inflection points of the linear series, away from the points where $E$ ramifies over $\mathbb{P}^1$. These fit into a recursive hierarchy, in the same way that division polynomials index torsion points. Our study is motivated by, and complements, an analysis of how inflectionary loc…
In previous articles, we classified the characters associated to algebraic points on Shimura curves of $Γ_0(p)$-type, and over number fields in a certain large class we showed that there are at most elliptic points on such a Shimura curve for every sufficiently large prime number $p$. In this article, we prove the non-existence of elliptic points on Shimura curves of $Γ_0(p)$-type under a mild assumption. We also give an explicit example.
Fix a number field $k$ and a rational prime $\ell$. We consider abelian varieties whose $\ell$-power torsion generates a pro-$\ell$ extension of $k(μ_{\ell^\infty})$ which is unramified away from $\ell$. It is a necessary, but not generally sufficient, condition that such varieties have good reduction away from $\ell$. In the special case of $\ell = 2$, we demonstrate that for abelian surfaces $A/\mathbb{Q}$, good reduction away from $\ell$ does suffice. The result is extended to elliptic curves and abelian surfaces over certain number fields unramified away from $\{2,\infty\}$. An explicit ex…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $\underline{III}(E)$ be a certain group of equivalence classes of homogeneous spaces of $E$ called its Tate-Shafarevich group. We show in this paper that this group has finite cardinality and discuss its role in the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture. In particular, our result implies the Parity Conjecture, or the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture modulo 2. It also removes the finiteness condition of $\underline{III}(E)$ from previous results in the literature of this subject and makes possible for some computation problems concerning th…
Let $\mathbb{F}_r$ be a finite field of characteristic $p>3$. For any power $q$ of $p$, consider the elliptic curve $E=E_{q,r}$ defined by $y^2=x^3 + t^q -t$ over $K=\mathbb{F}_r(t)$. We describe several arithmetic invariants of $E$ such as the rank of its Mordell--Weil group $E(K)$, the size of its Néron--Tate regulator $\text{Reg}(E)$, and the order of its Tate--Shafarevich group $III(E)$ (which we prove is finite). These invariants have radically different behaviors depending on the congruence class of $p$ modulo 6. For instance $III(E)$ either has trivial $p$-part or is a $p$-group. On the…
We establish several results towards the two-variable main conjecture of Iwasawa theory for elliptic curves without complex multiplication over imaginary quadratic fields, namely (i) the existence of an appropriate p-adic L-function, building on works of Hida and Perrin-Riou, (ii) the basic structure theory of the dual Selmer group, following works of Coates, Hachimori-Venjakob, et al., and (iii) the implications of dihedral or anticyclotomic main conjectures with basechange. The result of (i) is deduced from the construction of Hida and Perrin-Riou, which in particular is seen to give a bound…
Let $k$ be a global field, let $A$ be a Dedekind domain with $\text{Quot}(A) = k$, and let $K$ be a finitely generated field. Using a unified approach for both elliptic curves and Drinfeld modules $M$ defined over $K$ and having a trivial endomorphism ring, with $k= \mathbb{Q}$, $A = \mathbb{Z}$ in the former case and $k$ a global function field, $A$ its ring of functions regular away from a fixed prime in the latter case, for any nonzero ideal $\mathfrak{a} \lhd A$ we prove best possible estimates in the norm $|\mathfrak{a}|$ for the degrees over $K$ of the subfields of the $\mathfrak{a}$-div…
Let E/Q be an elliptic curve and let p be an odd supersingular prime for E. In this article, we study the simplest case of Iwasawa theory for elliptic curves, namely when E(Q) is finite, III(E/Q) has no p-torsion and the Tamagawa factors for E are all prime to p. Under these hypotheses, we prove that E(Q_n) is finite and make precise statemens about the size and structure of the p-power part of III(E/Q_n). Here Q_n is the n-th step in the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of Q.
Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field F. For a prime number $\ell$, we consider the field extension of F generated by the $\ell$-powered torsion points of A. According to a conjecture made by Rasmussen and Tamagawa, if we require these fields to be both a pro-$\ell$ extension of $F(μ_{\ell^{\infty}})$ and unramified away from $\ell$, examples are quite rare. Indeed, it is expected that for a fixed dimension and field of definition, there exists such an abelian variety for only a finite number of primes. We prove a uniform version of the conjecture in the case where the abelia…
We continue our study of the Legendre elliptic curve $y^2=x(x+1)(x+t)$ over function fields $K_d=\mathbf{F}_p(μ_d,t^{1/d})$. When $d=p^f+1$, we have previously exhibited explicit points generating a subgroup $V_d$ of $E(K_d)$ of rank $d-2$ and of finite, $p$-power index. We also proved the finiteness of $III(E/K_d)$ and a class number formula: $[E(K_d):V_d]^2=|III(E/K_d)|$. In this paper, we compute $E(K_d)/V_d$ and $III(E/K_d)$ explicitly as modules over $\mathbf{Z}_p[\mathrm{Gal}(K_d/F_p(t))]$.
In an earlier article we proved the existence of a canonical Kolyvagin derivative homomorphism between the modules of Euler and Kolyvagin systems (in any given rank) that are associated to $p$-adic representations over number fields. We now explain how the existence of such a homomorphism leads to new results on the structure of the Selmer modules of Galois representations over Gorenstein orders and to a strategy for verifying (refinements of) the Tamagawa number conjecture of Bloch and Kato. We describe concrete applications relating to the multiplicative group over arbitrary number fields an…
We use Andrew Baker's analysis of the cofiber of the endomorphism of the $p$-adic elliptic spectrum ($p>3$) defined by multiplication by the `Hasse invariant' $E_{p-1}$ to present its completion away from the locus of ordinary elliptic curves as a sum of roughly $p/12$ copies (indexed by supesingular elliptic curves) of $p$-adic lifts of the height two mod $p$ cohomology theory $K(2)$. See a recent paper of Zhu Yifei for a much deeper exploration of the topics considered in this note.
