Let $K$ be a number field and $S$ a fixed finite set of places of $K$ containing all the archimedean ones. Let $R_S$ be the ring of $S$-integers of $K$. In the present paper we study the cycles for rational maps of $\mathbb{P}_1(K)$ of degree $\geq2$ with good reduction outside $S$. We say that two ordered $n$-tuples $(P_0,P_1,...,P_{n-1})$ and $(Q_0,Q_1,...,Q_{n-1})$ of points of $\mathbb{P}_1(K)$ are equivalent if there exists an automorphism $A\in{\rm PGL}_2(R_S)$ such that $P_i=A(Q_i)$ for every index $i\in\{0,1,...,n-1\}$. We prove that if we fix two points $P_0,P_1\in\mathbb{P}_1(K)$, then the number of inequivalent cycles for rational maps of degree $\geq2$ with good reduction outside $S$ which admit $P_0,P_1$ as consecutive points is finite and depends only on $S$. We also prove that this result is in a sense best possible.
Let n be an odd number and F an imaginary quadratic field with odd discriminant. We show that there exists infinitely many cubic fields K such that the class number of K is divisible by n and the Galois closure of K contains F.
Given a number field $K$ and a finite set $S$ of places of $K$, the first main result of this paper shows that the quadratic rational maps $ϕ:{\mathbb P}^1\to{\mathbb P}^1$ defined over $K$ which have good reduction at all places outside $S$ comprise a Zariski-dense subset of the moduli space ${\mathcal M}_2$ parametrizing all isomorphism classes of quadratic rational maps. We then consider quadratic rational maps with double unramified fixed-point structure, and our second main result establishes a geometric Shafarevich-type non-Zariski-density result for the set of such maps with good reduct…
Let $ξ$ be a real irrational number. We are interested in sequences of linear forms in 1 and $ξ$, with integer coefficients, which tend to 0. Does such a sequence exist such that the linear forms are small (with given rate of decrease) and the coefficients have some given rate of growth? If these rates are essentially geometric, a necessary condition for such a sequence to exist is that the linear forms are not too small, a condition which can be expressed precisely using the irrationality exponent of $ξ$. We prove that this condition is actually sufficient, even for arbitrary rates of growth …
Mazur's theorem states that there are exactly 15 possibilities for the torsion subgroup of an elliptic curve over the rational numbers. We determine how often each of these groups actually occurs. Precisely, if $G$ is one of these 15 groups, we show that the number of elliptic curves up to height $X$ whose torsion subgroup is isomorphic to $G$ is on the order of $X^{1/d}$, for some number $d=d(G)$ which we compute.
In this paper we study the problem of how to determine all elliptic curves defined over an arbitrary number field $K$ with good reduction outside a given finite set of primes $S$ of $K$ by solving $S$-unit equations. We give examples of elliptic curves over $\mathbb Q$ and quadratic fields.
In this paper we prove that there exists a Zariski dense open subset U defined over the rationals Q in the space of all one-variable rational functions with arbitrary k poles of prescribed orders, such that for every geometric point f in U(Qbar)$, the L-function of the exponential sum of f at a prime p has Newton polygon approaching the Hodge polygon as p approaches infinity. As an application to algebraic geometry, we prove that the p-adic Newton polygon of the zeta function of a p-cover of the projective line totally ramified at arbitrary k points of prescribed orders has an asymptotic gener…
We give a simple proof of the well-known divisibility by 2 condition for rational points on elliptic curves with rational 2-torsion. As an application of the explicit division by $2^n$ formulas obtained in Sec.2, we construct versal families of elliptic curves containing points of orders 4, 5, 6, and 8 from which we obtain an explicit description of elliptic curves over certain finite fields $\mathbb{F}_q$ with a prescribed (small) group $E(\mathbb{F}_q)$. In the last two sections we study 3- and 5-torsion. This paper supercedes arXiv:1605.09279 [math.NT] .
Deng (arXiv:math/9812082) gave an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points on a weighted projective space over a number field with respect to a certain height function. We prove a generalization of Deng's result involving a morphism between weighted projective spaces, allowing us to count rational points whose image under this morphism has bounded height. This method provides a more general and simpler proof for a result of the first-named author and Najman on counting elliptic curves with prescribed level structures over number fields. We further include some examples of applicati…
In this paper, we describe the construction of superelliptic curves with a rational point of prescribed order on their jacobians. The construction is based on Hensel's Lemma and produces for a given integer $N$ a superelliptic curve of genus linear in $N$ with a rational $N$-division point on the jacobian. The method is illustrated with multiple examples.
We consider the question of approximating any real number $α$ by sums of $n$ rational numbers $\frac{a_1}{q_1} + \frac{a_2}{q_2} + ... + \frac{a_n}{q_n}$ with denominators $1 \leq q_1, q_2, ..., q_n \leq N$. This leads to an inquiry on approximating a real number by rational numbers with a prescribed number of prime factors in the denominator.
We study the minimal number of ramified primes in Galois extensions of rational function fields over finite fields with prescribed finite Galois group. In particular, we obtain a general conjecture in analogy with the well studied case of number fields, which we establish for abelian, symmetric and alternating groups in many cases.
We present a database of rational elliptic curves, up to Q-isomorphism, with good reduction outside {2,3,5,7,11,13}. We provide a heuristic involving the abc and BSD conjectures that the database is likely to be the complete set of such curves. Moreover, proving completeness likely needs only more computation time to conclude. We present data on the distribution of various quantities associated to curves in the set. We also discuss the connection to S-unit equations and the existence of rational elliptic curves with maximal conductor.
In 1984, K. Mahler asked how well elements in the Cantor middle third set can be approximated by rational numbers from that set, and by rational numbers outside of that set. We consider more general missing digit sets $C$ and construct numbers in $C$ that are arbitrarily well approximable by rationals in $C$, but badly approximable by rationals outside of $C$. More precisely, we construct them so that all but finitely many of their convergents lie in $C$.
For a given form $F\in \mathbb Z[x_1,\dots,x_s]$ we apply the circle method in order to give an asymptotic estimate of the number of $m$-tuples $\mathbf x_1, \dots, \mathbf x_m$ spanning a linear space on the hypersurface $F(\mathbf x) = 0$ with the property that $\det ( (\mathbf x_1, \dots, \mathbf x_m)^t \, (\mathbf x_1, \dots, \mathbf x_m)) = b$. This allows us in some measure to count rational linear spaces on hypersurfaces whose underlying integer lattice is primitive.
A reasonably complete theory of the approximation of an irrational by rational fractions whose numerators and denominators lie in prescribed arithmetic progressions is developed in this paper. Results are both, on the one hand, from a metrical and a non-metrical point of view and, on the other hand, from an asymptotic and also a uniform point of view. The principal novelty is a Khintchine type theorem for uniform approximation in this context. Some applications of this theory are also discussed.
In this note, we give an alternative proof of uniform boundedness of the number of integral points of smooth projective curves over a fixed number field with good reduction outside of a fixed set of primes. We use that due to Bertin-Romagny, the Kodaira-Parshin families constructed by Lawrence-Venkatesh can themselves be assembled into a family. We then repeat Lawrence-Venkatesh's study of the p-adic period map, together with the comparison of nearby fibres.
Suppose V is a surface over a number field k that admits two elliptic fibrations. We show that for each integer d there exists an explicitly computable closed subset Z of V, not equal to V, such that for each field extension K of k of degree at most d over the field of rational numbers, the set V(K) is Zariski dense as soon as it contains any point outside Z. We also present a version of this statement that is universal over certain twists of V and over all extensions of k. This generalizes a result of Swinnerton-Dyer, as well as previous work of Logan, McKinnon, and the author.
We prove the Manin-Peyre conjecture for the number of rational points of bounded height outside of a thin subset on a family of Fano threefolds of bidegree (1,2). The proof uses a mixture of the circle method and techniques from the geometry of numbers.
We establish various new results on a problem proposed by K. Mahler in 1984 concerning rational approximation to fractal sets by rational numbers inside and outside the set in question, respectively. Some of them provide a natural continuation and improvement of recent results of Broderick, Fishman and Reich and Fishman and Simmons. A key feature is that many of our new results apply to more general, multi-dimensional fractal sets and require only mild assumptions on the iterated function system. Moreover we provide a non-trivial lower bound for the distance of a rational number $p/q$ outside …
We consider the finite set of isogeny classes of $g$-dimensional abelian varieties defined over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ with endomorphism algebra being a field. We prove that the class within this set whose varieties have maximal number of rational points is unique, for any prime even power $q$ big enough and verifying mild conditions. We describe its Weil polynomial and we prove that the class is ordinary and cyclic outside the primes dividing an integer that only depends on $g$. In dimension $3$, we prove that the class is ordinary and cyclic and give explicitly its Weil polynomial, …
Given $m, n, q\in \mathbb{N}$ such that $q$ is a prime power and $m\geq 3$, $a\in \mathbb{F}_q$, we establish a sufficient condition for the existence of primitive pair $(α, f(α))$ in $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$ such that $α$ is normal over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and $\text{Tr}_{\mathbb{F}_{q^m}/\mathbb{F}_q}(α^{-1})=a$, where $f(x)\in \mathbb{F}_{q^m}(x)$ is a rational function of degree sum $n$. Further, when $n=2$ and $q=5^k$ for some $k\in \mathbb{N}$, such a pair definitely exists for all $(q, m)$ apart from at most $20$ choices.
We consider the problem of Diophantine approximation on semisimple algebraic groups by rational points with restricted numerators and denominators and establish a quantitative approximation result for all real points in the group by rational points with any prescribed denominator and an almost prime numerator.
Let $p$ be a large prime, and let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve over $\mathbb{F}_p$. We study the distribution of the $x$-coordinates in short intervals when the $y$-coordinates lie in a prescribed interval, and the distribution of the distance between consecutive $x$-coordinates with the same property. Next, let $g(P,P_0)$ be a rational function of two points on $C$. We study the distribution of the above distances with an extra condition that $g(P_i,P_{i+1})$ lies in a prescribed interval, for any consecutive points $P_i,P_{i+1}$.
Ideas and techniques from Khare's and Wintenberger's article on the proof of Serre's conjecture for odd conductors are used to establish that for a fixed prime l infinitely many of the groups PSL_2(F_{l^r}) (for r running) occur as Galois groups over the rationals such that the corresponding number fields are unramified outside a set consisting of l, the infinite place and only one other prime.
Let $K$ denote a number field and a finite set $S$ of places of $K$ and $ϕ:\PP^n\rightarrow\PP^n$ be rational morphism defined over $K$. The main result of this paper proves that there are only finitely many twists of $ϕ$ defined over $K$ which have good reduction at all places outside $S$. This answers a question of Silverman in the affirmative.
Given $F= \mathbb{F}_{p^{t}}$, a field with $p^t$ elements, where $p $ is a prime power, $t\geq 7$, $n$ are positive integers and $f=f_1/f_2$ is a rational function, where $f_1, f_2$ are relatively prime, irreducible polynomials with $deg(f_1) + deg(f_2) = n $ in $F[x]$. We construct a sufficient condition on $(p,t)$ which guarantees primitive pairing $(ε, f(ε))$ exists in $F$ such that $Tr_{\mathbb{F}_{p^t}/\mathbb{F}_p}(ε) = a$ and $Tr_{\mathbb{F}_{p^t}/\mathbb{F}_p}(f(ε)) = b$ for any prescribed $a,b \in \mathbb{F}_{p}$. Further, we demonstrate for any positive integer $n$, such a pair defi…
We establish a measure which describes in a precise way the local asymptotic distribution of rational points outside the locally accumulating subvarieties around a general rational point on a del Pezzo surface of degree 6 in the sense of diophantine approximation.
Let $p\ge5$ be a prime and $T$ a Kodaira type of the special fiber of an elliptic curve. We estimate the number of elliptic curves over $\mathbb Q$ up to height $X$ with Kodaira type $T$ at $p$. This enables us find the proportion of elliptic curves over $\mathbb Q$, when ordered by height, with Kodaira type $T$ at a prime $p\ge5$ inside the set of all elliptic curves. This proportion is a rational function in $p$. For instance, we show that $\displaystyle\frac{p^8(p-1)}{p^9-1}$ of all elliptic curves with bad reduction at $p$ are of multiplicative reduction. Furthermore, we prove that the pri…
In this paper we study the moduli spaces $Simp^m_n$ of degree $n+1$ morphisms $ \mathbb{A}^1_{K} \to \mathbb{A}^1_{K}$ with "ramification length $<m$" over an algebraically closed field $K$. For each $m$, the moduli space $Simp^m_n$ is a Zariski open subset of the space of degree $n+1$ polynomials over $K$ up to $Aut (\mathbb{A}^1_{K})$. It is, in a way, orthogonal to the many papers about polynomials with prescribed zeroes -- here we are prescribing, instead, the ramification data. Exploiting the topological properties of the poset that encodes the ramification behaviour, we use a sheaf-theor…
Let $K$ be a number field. Let $S$ be a finite set of places of $K$ containing all the archimedean ones. Let $R_S$ be the ring of $S$-integers of $K$. In the present paper we consider endomorphisms of $\pro$ of degree 2, defined over $K$, with good reduction outside $S$. We prove that there exist only finitely many such endomorphisms, up to conjugation by ${\rm PGL}_2(R_S)$, admitting a periodic point in $\po$ of order $>3$. Also, all but finitely many classes with a periodic point in $\po$ of order 3 are parametrized by an irreducible curve.
